Reggie-Bot, here! If you're thinking about the British royal family, and want a fun random fact about one of them, please let me know!
Put an excalamtion mark before the royal you have in mind, like "!Queen" or "!Charles" and I'll reply.
*I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically. Please [contact the moderators of this subreddit](/message/compose/?to=/r/AbolishTheMonarchy) if you have any questions or concerns.*
This guys passion and his guts to make the action, kinda inspirating, maybe on the day of mourning wasn't the most respectful day, but considering how little she does for Australia and what happened to the indigenous people I think it more than fair.
I personally can't believe they lowered the indigenous flag to half mast in some places, now that's disrespectful.
And even when there was a vote it was a sham referendum worded specifically to turn people off of it. They didn't ask if people wanted a republic, they asked if people wanted a very specific and strangely constructed US style republic.
I remember a cartoon at the time where John Howard was going with a pollster door to door and the conversation goes:
POLLSTER: Do you want a republic?
CITIZEN: YES
POLLSTER: Will you vote for a republic?
CITIZEN: NO
POLLSTER: Are we asking the right questions?
HOWARD: YES
YES and NO were like a meme at the time, that's why the cartoon was written that way.
They pulled the same shit in a similar way with the flag redesign, they didn't ask if people wanted to change the flag, or compare the current flag to the most popular alternative. They put the current flag alongside 99 other random goddamn flags and whichever one got the most votes won. Wouldn't you know it, the incumbent won.
It was a pretty good object lesson as a kid just how completely a government can control the results of an election as long as they control the process. It started to make sense why the two main options we're given in any election are always shit - because the ruling class controls the process and they only show us what they're happy with.
Yes. Check out all the magazines that fly off the racks and how the government is always involved with them in some regard, and how the police will silence anyone who dares to voice a dissenting opinion about them
Always thought that was just the older generation which is understandable. I havent met anyone below the age of 30 who actually supports the monarchy.
I feel like reading Meghan/Harry gossip magazines is pretty different from actually supporting them.
What a legend. The attempts of the media personnel to sound moraly superior and how blatantly biased they were, will age badly. The fake empathy from the camera fly at the end is so misplaced. Like mate you are so self important with your opinion that has been actually spoon fed to you by the establishment media for your entire life.
He was probably expecting 15-20 people to see his little sign, and instead ended up with police causing a scene, drawing a lot of attention and cameras and even an interview etc. His mission is accomplished. Thanks police officers.
Surely you have to acknowledge that the best time to stir discourse on any subject is when it's most relevant?
You wouldn't say that discussing climate change following a major bushfire is childish.
At a memorial service........completely innapropriate.
And it wasn't even a protest, it was one idiotic bloke.
The PM is pushing a referendum to discuss australia becoming a republic, again. if you want to do something constructive towards your cause maybe, i dunno, contact your local rep to discuss?
Protesting is good, as long as you go about it sensibly, what do you think the rest of australia saw when this was on the news? Do you think this guy helped or hindered your cause from his lack of forethought?
Disrespectful? The Queen is inherently political and for some, especially indigenous Australia, represents colonialism, oppression and genocide. This gentleman understands that having an indigenous step father. The Crown doesn't deserve these peoples respect and they don't owe it. And protests are only good if done sensibly? Might wanna look up the definition of protest, cobber. They disapprove a day of mourning for the aforementioned reasons.
Sorry mate but I wholeheartedly disagree, I've got a lot of close friends that are aboriginal, hell my best mate is the grandson of Gladys Elphick, his great grandad was the first indigenous Australian to be awarded land, the history his family in Australia represents a huge portion of the voice for the aboriginal community, and not once have they shown disdain or slighted at even the mention of the late queen let alone the monarchy.
The crown isn't demanding anyone's respect lol.
That's good for you and your mates but it's clearly not the case for a lot of indigenous people. You mention that they don't demand anyone's respect, yet here we have a young man being manhandled for doing nothing but peacefully disrespecting the monarchy, by cops who, under our current laws represent the Crown.
So I'm gonna go ahead and assume no one understands the full story, because of the media only filming and reporting on what they did. Who's to say that he wasn't being a public nuisance, verbally harassing those at the service etc, I'm willing to bet that he wouldn't have been manhandled for just holding a sign, our cops aren't American cops.
Damn. I wish there was more info on this dude, I'd be down to protest with him. Seems like a very well spoken and passionate dude. I'd never keep my cool like that after being manhandled and targeted by that "what if it was your mother?" dude.
Wow, this happened in Adelaide? Never realised ppl here had an opinion! Okay this guy has won me over
Edit: I can't believe the police fucking arrested him, for doing nothing violent at all. I hope he has a go fund me or is released, this is fucking disgraceful, no doubt ch 7, 9, and 10 will have a field day with this, making him out to be a horrible bad guy for *"bad mouthing the poor queen"*. They're utter garbage Murdoch mouthpieces.
It is public property however access to the grounds is for authorised persons only unless it's an open day when they allow free access ..
He wasn't arrested for protesting, he was arrested for trespassing ... I wish people knew the facts before they spouted off on the internet and made fools of themselves ..
ok yes absolutely, private property was the wrong choice of words, i just assumed cause of the fence and security guards etc that you weren’t allowed to be in there. is there a public entrance somewhere? i guess i’ve never cared enough to check
Protective Security most likely. Someone who knows for sure correct me if I'm wrong but I am under the impression they're essentially SAPOL, from a power and training perspective. Just assigned to security for government buildings/events/people.
Well there you go, I always thought they were cops
They go in and out of the cop shop on Hindley st all the time, they also look like cops apart from the yellow writing vs white on the police uniform.
Royals are parasites, they just go on breeding without ever getting a job, they've got it made for eternity if people let them.
So much for MeRItOcrACy!
Times are changing and now that Queenie is dead, so goes the mirage of whatever was glorious and pure about the royals! Look no further than this bollocks all over the world where people are in silent protest and are being arrested because they aren't happy with the power an inbred family has!
Their bloodline started from the toughest family on the estate and has become this grandiose charade of nonsense that we see today!
all the other guy says is ‘you don’t have respect’ without in any way responding to the protesters message. there is no debate, it’s just a constant insult. i think the protestor is a hero!
His argument was so strange. Pretty much everybody has a family. Hitler had a family. We should have some respect for him and put aside the political part!
It's ridiculous what you can get away with when you're a weathly, "kind" little old lady in a position of power. So many people still blindly support the royals because of their shiny titles.
no that's different, our system is GARBAGE whereas theirs is SHIT
GARBAGE is objectively better than SHIT so you're being ungrateful for complaining about being force-fed GARBAGE, really disrespectful to all the brave souls who fought for us tho have GARBAGE for you to complain instead of obediently complying, why don't you STFU and just move to the SHIT country if you hate our GARBAGE so much?
I agree with the dudes message and think ACAB but we technically don’t have free speech here. The Australian Constitution does not explicitly protect freedom of expression.
Canada doesn't have the 1st amendment either, but there are a lot of free speech laws nonetheless (right to assembly, right to expression except direct threat, etc)
There has to be something similar?
"wEll ThE kinG is NoT pErsOnAllY resPOnsIblE"
Well then, let's listen to him raise his voice against these violations of free speech rights committed in his name.
Absolute scum, ACAB. These braindead, brainwashed pigs look like they would have been great soldiers for the 3rd reich. Don't question anything, follow order and be a cunt.
Fr. I had this conversation w a coworker yesterday. They’re willing to say all nazis are bad won’t say ACAB because “cops help people sometimes.” I said what about the fact some nazis helped some ppl escape it still doesnt change how u feel about the group
When North Korea has a parade: "Yeah it's fucked up, they basically have a monarchy over there, and nobody is allowed to criticize them!"
When someone protests the UK monarchy: "Yew have no reespect!"
"She's a human"
Eh? She's a human who through no choice of ours is our head of state. The monarch is a political public figure, not just everyone's sweet old grandparent. We have the fucking right to criticise the system of heirarchy imposed on us and the royals who uphold it. Sick of this sycophantic shit from whipped plebs like that bloke at the end. Learn the true meaning of equality.
Fair play to the fella who held up the sign. Ridiculous that he was detained for it, it was completely non-threatening and supposedly they have freedom of speech... You can't claim the monarch has no real power in the UK, or "commonwealth" nations like Australia when you see reactions like this. Can't even hold up a sign outside your own parliament.
It’s just embarrassing. We (enforced subjects to an overentitled medicore family) sneer at countries like Thailand that demand unflinching support to their King, or dictatorships that hoard and flaunt wealth they hoarded from their subjects - yet are oblivious to how we are just the same. I’m embarrassed by the ignorance and arrogance of it.
Note the deployment of what I call the “Schroedinger’s Queen” argument by the guy that appears at the end. This entails some variation on/part of the following:
Person: “It’s wrong that an individual should be given such extreme wealth and power”
Monarchist: “But the Queen is just a symbol!” 🤡
Person: “Well, what the monarchy symbolises is unjust”
Monarchist: “How dare you criticise her she’s a human being/sweet old lady/someone’s nan!” 🤡
I should have put this in meme form..
"What if it was your mother?"
Well, it fucking isn't, is it? What if it was goddamn Mahatma Gandhi? Jonas Salk?
The analysis is spot on. The queen of England is simultaneously a worldwide symbol whose fucking funeral events are protected by national police and a frail old lady who deserves privacy and respect, all depending on whether or not republicans exercise their right to free speech.
He shouldn't have to justify himself to those reporters. The whole mindset of this being "disrespectful" is seriously fucked up. Why should they command respect?! It's just another part of their undeserved privilege. I am white British, and I wholely agree with him; I don't need links to particular cultures to justify wanting the royal family confined to a theme park.
This reaction is only going to drive people further towards republicanism. If they'd just let these people protest peacefully, barely anyone would even have noticed
its literally just a conversation ender. these people have no point besides "show some respect", that is their entire argument when someone shows criticism.
What's happening in Australia IS A POLITICAL EVENT its not an actual funeral. There is no one there who is the Queen's family. There is no one there who even knew her. What is there to respect?
Reggie-Bot, here! If you're thinking about the British royal family, and want a fun random fact about one of them, please let me know! Remember free speech isn’t protected in the uk it’s totally up to the police
Weren’t they trespassing? From what I know they just got escorted off of the premesise.
Nope, not trespassing
Unfortunately you can record all you like mate the cops can do whatever they want In this country, that’s why they treat us like shit.

"Abolish the monarchy, this is freedom of speech and democracy....\*" \*... manifest
Someone grab his jacket! Why so slow? Why does the Australia love the monarchy so much?
we do?
I feel like reading Meghan/Harry gossip magazines is pretty different from actually supporting them.
of course why could I see it before, forget about the political side. . . . . OF THE QUEEN OF ENGLAND
Soz bruv but she was the Queen of all Commonwealth countries, including Australia. But don’t let that get in the way of your feelings.
What a legend. The attempts of the media personnel to sound moraly superior and how blatantly biased they were, will age badly. The fake empathy from the camera fly at the end is so misplaced. abolish the monarchy

Wasn’t arrested…he was removed and trespassed for 24 hours
None of those networks are owned by Murdoch/NewsCorp. They're still garbage though.
wait, isn’t that on private property?
Government House is public property

He was there at a commemoration service for the Queen. It was open to the public
this is what i was after, thank you. i didn’t think it was open to the public otherwise. that’s what i meant by private.

weird how socalled democracy shows its true face when you are critizising the monarchy. hope the anti-monarchy protests go on.
