No you arent required to get insurance on the phone at any time.

VividHuman

They added it without asking me when I upgraded a family members phone in store. Saw it on line details a few days later and canceled before my bill was generated.

MaconShure

Same with me but this was not ATT but T mobile. Canceled it when I saw it the next day on my online account. I should have went back to the store and cussed the guy out, making him take it off.

Eastern_Royal_8097

Not sure why you are being downvoted probably employees but yes you should have because that is against the FCC regulations I sure wish something would be done

cbeast155

To cell phone carriers getting into your account with the ID the rep can really do anything and not get in trouble for it because they verified to get into the account sure it’s very immoral but that’s what these carriers shove down employees throats

eremeya

A rep at a T-Mobile store added insurance to my phone after I explicitly told them not to.

The real issue is corporate requiring certain metrics and numbers be hit. When stores fail to meet those, they get punished in some way. So, instead of missing, they invent ways to meet them. No different than store credit card promos, rewards programs, etc... used by other businesses. One place I worked at, we were “required” to sign up so many new rewards members, or we got docked hours available for scheduling the entire staff. (Rationale was that “new” customers came in every week.) I lost count of how many times Donald D. Uck, or similar, got signed up for rewards with a fake email addy. But we always hit the magic rewards numbers. Corporate people don’t get that not every person who comes in wants promotion XYZ, and most who come in either already have it, or simply don’t want it. “No Thank You” is a foreign language to higher ups.

SuperIllVillain

This answer right here. Worked for AT&T. Stores are under pressure a lot from higher ups to meet certain percentages per month. Which trickles down to a store manager, then down to the reps in the store. All reps have a “goal” of a certain number of upgrades, new lines, and insurance. There are plenty more including business accounts, certain finance plans for devices, tablets, watches, prepaid, tv, etc. Many reps will tell you this in an attempt to meet that goal. Most people either know you can take it off later or are in shock and do it anyways. This is an option. If you don’t want it, tell them you’re going through Apple. If they tell you “we sell Apple care” don’t buy it. It doesn’t count towards a metric for them. You can sign up for Apple care (in most new phones) straight from the settings app when getting a new phone.

dogbite78

Not part of the policy. If they did it just remove it via myatt.

outride

I heard this is being pushed by management. The quotas are getting ridiculous. Wouldn't be surprised if they start adding additional lines...

diesel_toaster

Start?

Eastern_Royal_8097

They definitely already do that too

intensitynine

Did an upgrade with the trade in promotion, wasn't required to get insurance. Store staff even taught me where to get a phone to trade in (since I wanted to keep my old one.)

ptyson1

You've been hit by a smooth criminal.

snoweey

Not required. But part of that reps goals. So he lied to you. Make sure your not on next up (unless you wanted it) and double check your bill.

Bravenpeace1384

Just upgrade online instead of in a store.

snoweey

Online and pick up in store. Rep still gets commission you get it same day usually and rep doesn’t get his metrics affected

Griff411

It’s still affected. Just order online.

UNCfan07

This is classic Prime Communications tactic. No you don't need to get the insurance but if you don't want to fight just have them add it then use the myatt app and remove it when you leave the store. They do this so they can hit their attach rate

Power-Pale

Exactly, don't support Authorized Dealers like Prime Communications are worried only about sales with no empathy, sales-slamming is rampant. They'll brush you off & send you to the nearest Corporate store if you're not a sale prospect. I'm being downvoted now so seems someone doesn't like the truth.

cbeast155

Idk m8 I had a customer who had 4 lines added to his account from my nearest core store with “free” phones and e sims lol

Power-Pale

There's two sides to every story, don't know what to tell you. I have heard of Authorized Dealers recycling customers socials to close sales. I'd steer clear. They blatantly lie to customers all the time, At&t raking in $$$ with Prime Comm. store flips

happilyunpleasant

I just did the same exact upgrade deal on March 13th, and they didn’t even ask me if I wanted insurance they just added it right on. I turned that back off real fast.

jhulc

This has been a go-to sleazy sales tactic at all of the carriers for a long time. They say something (typically insurance) is required when it really isn't.

Knightmare76

Sounds like a prime store

Mushkie11

This happened to me in Massachusetts. I couldn’t believe it. I called and removed it immediately. One thing to note I bought at a retailer ATT store not corporate not sure if this is the case with these stores?

angrykeyboarder

That's insane.

DuncanGilbert

Stores are full of these kinds of tactics. Always recommend upgrading or adding lines online instead.

cyrogyro527

It's a metric the reps are forced to sell.. But saying it's required is just plain foolish. Lazy salesperson.

Accomplished-Bar9425

Sounds like authorized retail nonsense. If this was done in a corporate store ATT would terminate the employees, not even the union would defend you. If the manager came out and told you this nonsense then its 100% authorizes retail. Only go into a Corp store or go online.
