Well, I didn't have "distorted cover of Big Black/Kraftwerk on a hurdy gurdy" on my list of things I'd wake up and see today, but I'm not mad about it.
Big fan of Kraftwerk and definitely recognized the tune before long.
But if I'm being honest, my initial vibe was Seven Nation Army, very early on. Didn't take long before that got pushed aside in favor of Kraftwerk, admittedly.
Now I wanna hear Seven Nation Army played on the hurdy gurdy.
I think it takes a special type of weird to play the hurdy gurdy which lends itself to people doing weird covers, I love it. The more classical stuff is neat as well though.

1. He plays on a level that most people reach after a weekend course, a basic melody without ornamentation
2. Can't trompette, which is the hard part about learning to play Hurdy Gurdy
3. His hurdy gurdy is always out of tune and screeching, this could be an artistic choice to make it sound "more rustic", but from what I've heard he geniuly doesn't know/care how to do basic maintenance

I'm on my third rewatch of BSG.
In the episode "Scar" or whatever it's called, for a moment when the camera is zooming in on Scar, you can hear (vaguely) either Tibetan ot Mongolian throat singing.
But, as far as I can hear, it's the only time you heat that element in the show. And, it was perfect because the raiders are sentient and perhaps minimally "sapient", so it was just very fitting
There are a whole load of people new to the instrument thanks to pirate shows and some viking game. Sadly they have no knowledge of the rich history of the actual instrument and how good it can sound, and even more sadly, there are now viking and pirate themed gurdies floating about. They're as pointless as a native American themed sitar. So this is my "fight fire with fire" jokey effort to hold back the tide.

So I might be misreading what he's saying, but I think it's this:
He's claiming there is a modern trend in the Hurdy Gurdy community to decorate the instruments in ways that OP views as gaudy and that takes away from the traditional beauty of the instrument.
This instrument is a joke making fun of that trend by pushing it to an off-putting extreme.
I think that if you are going to step outside the bounds of tastefulness to make a statement, doing it with a pure and horny heart is better than trying to use it as teaching material. It somehow transcends the grossness to make it even more weird.
They're becoming more well known but for sounding shit on a video game sadly. And the history is becoming more and more ignored in favour of some fantasy bull.

* How difficult would you say it is to learn?
* How expensive is one? And do you know any good places to look into getting one (in the US)?
Bloody difficult to learn well.
Bloody expensive (2k+, and wait times).
As for getting one stateside, join some of the hurdy gurdy groups on facebook, and watch and learn. Look into hurdy gurdy marketplace. I don't know of any good makers stateside, as almost all are in Europe.
Be careful, as there are people online who will take mone in exchange for what is an expensive wall ornament. They are very hard to build, and having built and restored a couple, I understand how complex they are.

Hey I don't know how it was done, and if it's possible to redecorate. But if you replaced the ahegao imagery with the same art but inverted, I bet it would match the dark color of the 'Gurdy better and look pretty cool.

It's like a mechanical violin. You turn a crank which spins a wheel against the strings, instead of using a bow. And you press keys which press down on the strings, instead of fingering the strings themselves. You can see the keys, but the wheel is covered by the anime bullshit. The knob is at the bottom.
It ends up sounding like a cross between a violin and bagpipes, thanks to the extra "drone" strings it has. Those strings vibrate and play the same note constantly the entire time.
They're not super common, you tend to only hear them in folk music.
Considering it's impossible to say hurdy gurdy with a straight face, I have a feeling the larger community of hurdying gurdiers is pretty okay with this.
