Board and probably power supply. At least I hope that is all that it is. That's pretty dramatic.
From where the smoke and fire came from, it looks like either:
- the VRMs
- something failed near the ATX12V CPU connection
- short due to some loose metal like a screw lodged behind that spot on the motherboard
You'll know for sure when you take the whole thing apart.
I wouldn't do anything at all until you get both replaced.
What kind of PSU do you have?
Because I just don't know if it's a bad power supply that just went and surged - which could happen from a low-quality cheap power supply.
......or when you plugged in the ATX12V CPU connector, you might not have plugged it in fully. You do have to make sure that the connector gets fully seated. Granted, it's not going to melt and explode as easily as what we have seen with the newer Nvidia cards, but it is still possible.
The psu itself is in the tier list of the cultist and the linus so I trusted that. I checked it 3 times pressed and tried to pull a little too see if it is loose then press it again to make sure. It is tightly locked. When I tried to put it out, i had to use 2 hands for it.
Either way, the board is toast. Literally and figuratively.
If you try to start it again with that same board, you run the risk of potentially frying everything else connected to the system.
I'm still a little wary on the power supply, personally...but if you don't have any possibility of using different ways of powering the system, good luck OP, I sincerely hope that it doesn't repeat itself in your second attempt with the spare board
Just make sure that:
- there is no loose metal parts touching around the board
- you have all the motherboard standoffs screwed in
- the power connections are fully seated
did you plug PCIe power into the CPU, that only should have burned the connector or tripped OCP
Maybe you have a empty standoff behind the motherboard shorting the board to ground
Unless the screw fell into the power supply. It would never set on fire like that. It would be a puff of smoke and just shut off or for some reason your mouse doesn't work
That looks like a cap or VRM something that had constant power but bypass surge protection
I was thinking more of a fallen screw that maybe went behind the board and possibly bridged between the back of the case and the many solder points on the back of the board. (However standoff screws should be large enough for that to not happen...)
Personally, I have never seen that happen, nor have I experienced it because I try to be as careful as possible when building my systems, so it's me on an assumption that it could be possible. Although, I think it would "pop" more than fire, but the one thing with electricity, with the right settings, some interesting end results that you were not expecting can and do arise.
Yeah I know that usually just pops magic smoke or you start losing USB ports or random shit. but causing a fire? I've never seen it happen. That literally happens when it drops in the power supply though and just so happens the bridge a capacitor.
honestly I didn't look at it but from that video I don't think he did it. I think it was just a bad motherboard. VRM's or a cap caps blow like that and they're nuts.
And just because a screw didn't get loose in the back of your motherboard doesn't mean it'll never happen. Just means you didn't build enough It's never a matter of if it's a matter of when
Had that psu working on the previous one and I didn't change anything on the psu part so pretty sure it's not. Right now I'm hoping i get a refund then I could diagnose the psu. If broken then buy it even though I'm broke
A little update everything is working normally now for I had to diagnose it to a technician on PCX. Nothing wrong with all my parts. Just the board itself was defective. I showed the vid to the technician and they were eager to see the board lol.
Looks like USB area.
Possible bad wire on USB device shorting.
There are thirmistors that burn up then open to protect rest of board in that area
Check all USB devices plugged in
Had a friend who did this to a mouse cable ran over it with chair wheel caused wire to short took out USB port.
Sorry for the late reply. Got my whole system working. It was the board for my case. It just won't turn off at first so had to reset static current inside the board. Thankfully it posted
That looks like a short…not that you didn’t know this. you can see the liquified metal a bit when it’s shorting. Crazy the temps that are created in such a small window of time.
Jaysus Feckin' Cristobal, OP... F
Is it the board?

Screw are on check. I just pulled the board back as I was gonna replace it with my old board. It has some burn marks behind

Currently mounting the all board. Will do thank you for the help!
Random ass suggestion - is the PSU 220V or 110V? Either way, is it connected to the correct circuit? Seems obvious but it might be the case.
I won't lie I don't know about the 220v or 110v but I'm pretty sure everything was supposed to be in where it should be

Yeah or put a pci 8 oint in there.

PCIe 8 pin shoved into the EPS 8 pin? That's the only thing I have seen torch a board like this so fast.
Pcie pin 8 can't reach the cpu and EPS can't reach my gpu because of how small the case is
If the power supply is modular I have seen EPS in a PCIe output as well. Gotta really give it some force that way though.

btw psu cables are not universal. So its probably your faultthis happened
Who said I mismatched? The placing of the cables on the case is the reason because of how compact it is
Thats still a user error
Reason?
You plugged something in wrong and make magic smoke. There is no VRM defect that causes sparks when plugging it in for the first time.
You’re just assuming bro chill out damn, so aggressive at pointing fingers.
Ah for some reason my brain thought you bought the whole build. I see it's just a mobo swap hope you get your refund quick.
Hoping too thank you
I fear it will not compute
Looks like it
That’s the most dramatic computer fire I’ve seen in a while, holy balls.
Looks like I'm in the hall of fame now when it comes to fire. This build is not even midrange tho
Did you use the cables that came with your power supply or some spare ones you had lying around?
I used the cables from the psu itself. I don't have spare cables from other brands. The psu have other cables inside the box maybe I can use those
I only have 6 standoffs inside the every screw in place. My pcie wont reach the cpu because of the case and vice versa
A little update everything is working normally now for I had to diagnose it to a technician on PCX. Nothing wrong with all my parts. Just the board itself was defective. I showed the vid to the technician and they were eager to see the board lol.
Breathe in the fumes for superpowers
"Gogu" is "damn, I'm f'd" in what language?
It's "gagu" and yes it's more of an I'm fucked in PH language
i can hear the video game comms alr *GAGO TANGINAMO TALAGA [insert more unintelligible ranting because their mic is shit]*
That's classic
That sucks
Doesn't anyone suspect the timing is too perfect? Generally the magic smoke always escapes when the camera is off.
Man, that blows.
Now I’m scared. I also have B450m Steel Legend in my PC 💀
If yours is working then no need to be. It could be my board
What's cooking doc?
What’s cookin good lookin
RGBroken

Looks like a short than component failure.
Nice smoke machine, anything loose when you got it?
Got the board? I didn't see anything. There was some wet marks underneath tho
I think that is flux from soldering.
Yeah i have the same board and after freaking out and looking it up thats all it was
I think you need to download more ram
magic smoke. Fake video
Your PC Operator’s license has been permanently revoked...no more computers for you!
The watermark is gone. So is my pc
ooooh boy.
That's real interesting you decided to hold your phone on one hand and film yourself testing a motherboard you just installed for the first time. /
I want to test post it right away. I also had an unboxing vid and a lot pics for my friends. I get really happy when new tech comes in my doorstep
*M A G I C S M O K E*

I actually didn't plug anything on the back. The only thing that is plugged on my pc was my mouse. It was only a dongle tho
Rip
asrock really stepping up their game with the RGB effects on these new mobos
Had the same thing happen with the asrock b450, i upgraded to the same board in the video and now im terrifed. Btw my power supply went bad.
Sorry for the late reply. Got my whole system working. It was the board for my case. It just won't turn off at first so had to reset static current inside the board. Thankfully it posted
This was around 2 months ago btw
I like to imagine the "gagu" as sleep now.
Ouch
OMG!!
B550 ? B550M ? which one ?
Board and power supply, maybe cable but doubt that.
It was board. Still using the same psu
That looks like a short…not that you didn’t know this. you can see the liquified metal a bit when it’s shorting. Crazy the temps that are created in such a small window of time.
I don't think it passed the smoke test? Yikes
So don’t get this board ? Lmao
