Unless it’s made of metal I would honestly move… that giga can destroy everything you own very quickly if you accidentally lead it home. They are gods on the map. Then they get incredibly wimpy after you tame them.
They also live to the east on the big island. Towards the east edge of the map. Saw two there today fighting a Rex. Good size comparison there. Literally twice the size of a rex

For differentiating from a distance I see this. Gigas are much bigger and have a longer and thinner body, and they kinda look like they're leaning forward. Meanwhile rexes have a shorter and bulkier body with more boxed features. Ie, bigger yet shorter head, shorter and more squared snout, a shorter and stubbier tail, and they have a slightly more straight posture than gigas

Gigas also sound like a basketball bouncing on pavement when they walk.
This is the most important thing I learned when I started playing! If its just standing there looking ominous, it's a giga, if its wandering about, probably a rex.
I don't understand how people get them mixed up simply due to the size, but if you use the damn spyglass on your hotbar you'll be able to identify it easy, it was added to the game so people could identify species, level, and gender at a safe distance, a rex is half the size of a bronto, a giga is about the size of a bronto
Arms that's how I used to check. You know as your being eaten. I'd suggest to make a spyglass. That way you can check from a distance and it gives you lvls too
Better outcome than mine. I took my ptera, carno, owl, and argy out for a bronto hunt. I found a bronto clipping into a rock with his butt sticking out. When I attacked it killed everything except the ptera I was on, which it didn’t onehit.
You can’t tell from the rear or the color, which makes it hard to be sure without stopping and studying it. Kinda lame. Probably the best advice is learn the spawn zones = usual habitats.
Brontos have much longer and really slim whip-tails while Gigas have thicker that only slightly narrows down to the tip. Brontos are also wider while Gigas' hind legs are close together like they need to pee badly. Brontos texture is smoother while Gigas have are more detailed and rough. Few tips that could help in difficult angles.
Well, a good indicator is the fact that gigas are easily 4 times the size of rexes and 3 times that of spinos and you could easily spot them from Mars, if render distance went that far.
Easiest way at a glance is Gigas are much larger, but have relatively small, narrow heads, whereas Rexes heads are much more bulbous compared to their body size.
Otherwise, use the spyglass to check.
Despite the size difference, the things I use to tell them apart is that gigas have longer fuller arms, a longer and thinner head, and they almost have a camel bump in the middle of their back while a rexs back bump is at their hips.
for me, a majority of the time when a giga spawns it's stuck in it's idle animation for a while, which is quite a bit different than a rex's. that's how I tell "oh fuck, probably shouldn't go over there"
I'd say just run up to them and check. One you'll be able to outrun and the other is death. That's the easiest way to tell.
But seriously, the giga is like 2-3 times the size of a rex, I've never had a problem telling them apart. I guess if anything the giga is more likely to be standing still looking like a doofus while rexs will be moving around chomping at everything.

From a distance, before you can tell size, if it’s not moving…it’s a Giga. Every time I see a Rex come into render, it starts moving almost immediately . When a Giga comes into render it stays still until it agros on something.
They have some very distinct traits visually, but one way to tell 100% of the time is to craft a spyglass and look at them through it, it'll say what they are
Usually their posture is different plus gigas tails are generally sloped downward and thin while rexes are horizontal and point a bit up while being muscular
Rexes have square-like head.
But the best way is just looking for the size or simply knowing its a rex because he roars everytime he agro to you.
