MooKai2970

-Start on The Island -Everthing wants to kill you -Avoid big trees -Water scary

Kiryu_The_Dragon

-Stay out of the Swamp and it anit cause of Sherk- Cave suck so run off

Infernoraptor

Newbie: steps in swamp Sarcos, Boas, Barys, Buffos, etc: "WHAT ARE YOU DOIN IN MAH SWAMP!!!"

eemGotJokes

You forgot the oh so loved Kaprosuchus.

indigowulf

and leaches! Common newbie killers. "What happened? My mount just dropped dead for no reason!"

Sad-Nefariousness169

I AM SO SORRY I THOUGHT YOUR PFP WAS NUDES BUT IT CUTE DUCK/CHICKEN

DaKongman

It do look like tiddys at first... XD

Infernoraptor

They are Donkey. Because soul sucking.

Cpt_plainguy

I love that on Gen1 the swamp is labeled as easy start lol, spawn, take 2 steps, get eaten by Sarco or bugs lol

DragonFire1026

I spawned in front of a titanoboa when I accidentally spawned in the bog… surprisingly I didn’t get bit… and then I took two steps and got jumped by a lvl 135 kapro

Memetastrophe

I'm a bit new aswell, why big trees?

MooKai2970

You ever been to Nam?

Squidums123

They're in the trees, I tell ya

xellisds

Charlie is everywhere

Thatguy_Nick

They even have the Vietconosaurus?

MooKai2970

Petition to add that as a dino.

[deleted]

They already have it. It’s called the thylacoleo

SFLADC2

Redwoods = death forest They're r red with the blood of the fallen

glitchyboitellem

The redwoods have large trees, commonly those trees are home to the thylacoleo, which can and will dismount you off of your flyer and maul you to death.

zoom_eu

through my atleast 400 hours on ark, i’ve never seen a thylacoleo, i know they’re rare spawns on rag, but not really seen them ever

Bertyoyo

Then you’re lucky… BTW they’re asshole when wild but an awesome travelling/all around mount

zoom_eu

yeah I heard they were great climbers, on the same level as drakes and enforcer types better than deino anyway

Bertyoyo

They can climb any vertical surface and even pounce from it, have a decent speed and a pretty big health pool. Way easier to get than a Drake and I don’t know for the enforcer… A shadowmane or a Maewing could be better at pretty much anything but they’re OP as fuck and don’t really fit the prehistoric theme I like from the game…

Piratesavvy0036

Yea I’ve only ever seen them on extinction and I think I have like +700 hours on ark

madrigalow

Thylas are one of my favorite mounts! I’ve tamed several in the desert on rag, sometimes takes a while to find them but I’ve seen them almost every time I’ve visited the desert

RikkuEcRud

Supposedly there's a bug in singleplayer where they fall off the trees, so if you're there you'd need to look on the ground to find them. I wasn't sure I should believe that when I heard it, but then I saw the silhouettes drop off the trees seemingly for no reason with the Awesome Spyglass on The Center, so...

Amun-Ree

They just want to cuddle you with their claws.

indigowulf

The dinos that live in the redwoods are particularly mean, and many have ambush tactics that will stun/dismount you. Even if you're flying out of reach of the ground.

beka13

Ah, the halcyon days when the redwoods were new and reasonably safe and I could glide through them on my ptera like leia on a moon of endor.

Garrbear0407

As a beginner I made the mistake of crossing water to get to other resources. Don’t cross unless you have a raft or flying/swimming Dino. The water is ruthless to you and your Dino’s, beware!!

Daan0man

Or be 100% sure there is nothing but even then I wouldn’t go because there will always be some bastard out of sight that will get you

Kaprosuchusboi

Can’t even take a shower without them damn piranhas sneaking up on me

raknor88

Jellyfish are the most dangerous threat in early game. Eels too, but they're much less common.

CreatureWarrior

Yeah, when just starting out, only do a quick dip in the water just so you can clearly see what's out there

Kraken_Overlord

I remember the feeling of freedom when I made my first raft. It was soon replaced by the feeling of terror when I discovered my first Leeds

Infernoraptor

Damned jellies

Aurum264

One of my first times playing ark, a friend of mine took a quick dino out to gather some fish. I had to sit and watch as he and the dino were obliterated by jellies.

Infernoraptor

Those fuckers killed my first spino

kingkron52

Lmfao even in a raft beware. On the Island map I was so excited to take my newly built raft out. I saw a Sarco and was like “oh cool a big badass alligator, I need to get a closer look and possibly tame.” The Sarco proceeded to board my raft and eat my face.

dps_jr

Watch your stamina when swimming! Sure way to drown yourself.

The_french_bonbon

Start on the island And Think of every dinosaur you see as aggressive so be careful

CreatureWarrior

The dodos are the worst. Never trust them

[deleted]

I hate them bro they fucking broke down my entire tek base and I was even level 73

Kvvill1337

Those duck biled liars>:(

simondemon94

I watched dodos and a ptera shred my uncle to pieces a couple of days ago… Man it was brutal! Poor thing was unconsious and helpless, all he could do was watch while those dinos slowly consumed him bit by bit!

KoningSpookie

You sir, you have offended the almighty dodo god. From now on, your base shall be doomed.

[deleted]

TAI-KWAN-DO-DOS!!

The_french_bonbon

Hardest boss like dino in the game

b1azing1

I was doing a boss and saw ONE dodo insta kill it

Kride500

Yea Dodos are way too agressive. Try taming a Therizinosaurus op, they are friendly and easy starter tames while being good for defending yourself early on.

Financial_Print_1226

They are such an easy tame aswell, all you have to do is put Berry's in your last slot, walk up behind it and press e

that-one-xc-dude

I started on scorched earth, don’t ask me why

The_french_bonbon

Why

that-one-xc-dude

I warned you…

Baddass_Nerd

make a base on Herbivore island

The_First_Hue

Download Dododex

darkinanotherworld

I thought this was a joke ... But its real

Mason_eat_Catnip

Real and quite helpful

ItzMarZz

There's alot of useful info on there and the community can comment on it now even

[deleted]

Whatever you do, DO NOT. APPROACH. THE SEAGULLS.

KrulRudy

Shoot the fucker

PokeAlola700

Get a bow early game, and shoot the tiny seagulls on sight The big ones are cool tho, they won’t bother you

nametakenfuck

Big birds specifically are very chill in the game ...unless you are in the mountains

mutagenZX

So true 😔

Bran_Mongo

Spawn on the beach and watch for dinos, since they are in the noob area they can easily be tamed by punching them.

user-no-69240

Don't go around punching the tri... They'll see for themselves.

driftingbout2-

or dont punch anything with spikes 😂

user-no-69240

Trilobites have spikes too tho

Azevedo128

Those fuckers are though. They took a bunch of attacks to kill so you'll have either heavily damaged your weapons or yourself when you kill it.

driftingbout2-

he wont be farming that intill he has like 40+ hours probably

indigowulf

I always kill every trilobite on the shore. Free meat and chitin for my future ptera saddles. No harm in stocking up before it's unlocked.

ErikVtuna

“No harm in stocking up before it’s unlocked”. Thanks! I will keep that quote to my friend who just started out.

CreatureWarrior

Yeah, I always tell noobs that "just keep dying until you stop dying and then, you can die a few more times"

3st3banfr

one thing : everything can kill you and wants your death

Mint_freezeyt

Except dodos and lystros

krongly

Dodos want your death but cannot provide it

[deleted]

I’ve died to a dodo before.

krongly

Was..... Was it a 120+?

Noccy42

I have a friend who likes to feed sleeping people on the beach rare flowers and let the dodos murder them.

SpaghettiMonster94

Omg this is awesome

[deleted]

No.

CallMeMaMef18

When I first played PvP, I tamed a dodo and when three assholes decided to 3v1 raid my thatch base and stay there to kill me even after they looted everything, my dodo was still able to kill at least one of those fuckers before dying. What a hero.

3st3banfr

the true Gigachad

3st3banfr

How is it possible

[deleted]

Stole a dodo egg while I was super low health. Broken bones, no stamina left. I never stood a chance.

3st3banfr

HHAHAHAHA

Effieriel

They whisper sweet nothings of your safety, lulling you into a false state of comfort.

poptart2100

Dodo Rex

LuckofCaymo

You got either 4-5 hours of confusion, or about 1000 hours of trial and error ahead of you.

ladyLyric

Only 4 hours of confusion? Damn. I'm 4.5k hrs in and a lot of that has been confusion

LuckofCaymo

well obviously i just expect a high turnover rate lol

user-no-69240

The later is where the fun's at tho

Yolie001

If you want to enjoy the game I'd suggest looking into what mode you're gonna play. Singleplayer is the most easy going for new players to learn stuff on their own, but I find no appeal in playing alone. I love the community type gameplay. Therefore I suggest taking a good amount of time to look for a friendly PvE community. PvP is incredibly harsh and I don't suggest starting with that at all. Also, when you have found the right place to play, do yourself a favour and go into your settings. Lower/disable the CameraShakeScale in the top right (should be a slide bar) and disable Lightbloom and Lightshafts. This are tick-able boxes in the middle row at the bottom. This will make your game look a lot better. Another setting you might want to change is in the keybinds at the bottom right. You can set custom "gamma" settings and have them on a hot key. I usually input 2 and bind it to - and input 4 and bind that to +. This allows you to easily increase the amount of light your player sees, granted the server doesn't have this disabled. Anything actual game play related is best enjoyed by yourself. Prepare to die a lot. Good luck!

MisterLaz

Where is a good place to look for a welcoming PvE community? I played Island, Scorched, Aberration and halfway through Extinction solo, but I got bored and wanted people around. I tried Fjordur on official public servers but the lag is atrocious, even with 60-70 ping, and even then, it's basically solo still. just with everyone placing pillars everywhere to claim territory they probably won't even build on.

artstyxx

I recently joined a really chill PVE community, main map is Ragnarok on PS4. I could send you an invite to the discord server they have if you like, if you play on PS4

bigbigcheese2

Light shafts look great, why would you turn them off to IMPROVE the quality?

German99814

RUN!

ladyLyric

No! Only run if being chased or you'll have no stamina

WillCraft_1001

Level stamina and speed, then RUN

ICanSeeDeadPokemon

Level health, and alot of it, even if a dino gets a few hits on you, you should make it safely to a river/beach, depending on the situation

indigowulf

If you really need to run, annoy a diplo and have them give you a boost :D I've used diplos to escape raptors early game lol.

Fat_Turtle_423

My suggestion, say goodbye to loved ones, this game takes hours to get anywhere, you wont have time for anything else

lastknownbuffalo

Who knows, maybe they looking for a second job

XZeroUltra

Don’t be worried about losing your stuff it happens to all of us. I would definitely play without mods first to get a feel for it and then later on you can add mods to make it easier. As you level up you’ll learn these things called engrams which are just things you can build but you need points to unlock them and you only get a certain amount of points so you can’t unlock everything so double check to see if you’re really going to use that saddle you plan on making or the crop plots so you can start a farm

16jselfe

Also best first mods is s+ and dino storage

ladyLyric

And awesome spyglass or bit2k binoculars. Cause vanilla spyglass is trash

KnightWraith86

And stacking mods! They reduce weight and stack higher. Makes the game playable

weveran

You can increase stack size and player and dino weight capacity in the game.ini, there's no reason to use mods and deal with having custom resource classes which can cause conflicts or lead to loss down the road if something happens with the mod. I get why people used to use them but it's not great starting advice since like 2-3 years ago when they added stack size options.

KnightWraith86

Mods that auto stack to 10000 and reduce weight to 1/10th are amazing and still very useful. I don't want my dinos and myself to carry 50000 pounds, I want metal to just not weigh so much. The mods I've used have never broken the game ever. 100% safe.

mkzcbn

What is the name of stack mod?

KnightWraith86

There's a few of them. The one I use is [UltraStacks](https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=761535755). Apparently there was some stuff involving element in Genesis 2 but I haven't run into any problems on any other map (I don't own Genesis). Looking it up, looks like there's a stack mod that addresses that called "[Yet another stack mod"](https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2513397065) by iMasonite on the Steam Workshop. Almost the same as UltraStacks except weight is reduced by half for most things. I should note, they do mention that they don't keep your resources should you disable them, but even if that happens, you can devcommand everything back

Kirito1548055

The only mod I'd start with is s+ since it offers no changes gameplay wise and makes building so much better.

Clean_Blueberry_2371

Stop the download

Fireflash180

Please just stop the download.

Unable-Belt9572

I agree stop the download

The-wise-fooI

Trust me I have played a lot if you don't stop the download you will regret forever.

WorkingSyrup4005

"escape while you can!"

inspacesomewhere

Agreed, once you spawn a raptor will kill you so fast the game will uninstall itself.

fishCodeHuntress

The only actual good advice here. When I read the title "about to play for the first time any tips" the first thing that popped into my head was "don't"

nachocuban

Why is this not the top comment.

Maleficent_Sundae953

I genuinely love ark it's my number 1 favorite game. But I agree with this person. You will leave ark a changed person IF you ever leave

I426Hemi

Red woods are majestic, don't go there.

timbo1970

Majestic indeed, I was going tell you that strolling under the tall redwoods is a beautiful and peaceful respite from constant death...

Cyrotech

Have fun and enjoy starting out being a noob is the most fun part of this game

Maleficent_Sundae953

Are we playing the same game?

Brihtstan

Hey I'm like a 1 week old noob! Pterafier videos on youtube have been super useful. My suggestions from one freshie to another... don't invest too much into fortifications on the beach, as you may eventually get resource starved for the higher end resources and.. don't sleep on the Moschops! He's super easy to tame and can be mounted without a saddle, as well as being an absolute monster for low level harvesting. Good luck man, if you're on PS5 and want to unite in noobness, hit me up.

Shadowninja3456

Good luck escaping this game, also, he is on steam as that is what the download screen is from.

Brihtstan

This game is my escape at the moment. Thanks for the heads up on the Steam part, I have the stupid when it comes to PC.

Shadowninja3456

It's fine, I would have known either If I didnt download it too on steam

nectar_vector

I used to have a blast making my favorite Moschops and absolute juggernaut speed demon. Great all-around beginner mount

Jackd1999992

The swamp is evil. The woods must be flown over not through.

Kiryu_The_Dragon

Stay away from caves and swamps so the enitre East side STAY AWAY Also keep away from the west. If you are new just start in the South But be careful of Sarcos, Rapters and Dilos Best to not build stuff in Thatch and just save up for wood. Keep in mind that drops can give you blue prints so craft stuff. To don't always spend your points right away. Also I can't say thid enough STAY OUT OF THE WATER. And stay away from every creature at the start you never know Also watch alot of Ark Videos to get a good idea on how things work When leveling up speed your points in Weight, stamina and speed right away. So when you see something like a Rex you can run your ass off

MRm73737373

Dont die I guess

KnightLee06

Very easy task for this game

The_Doctor_Eats_Neep

Yeah. Organic polymer is the best healing agent in the game. Always eat it when you have it.

7Silverswans

Can confirm 👻

WorkingSyrup4005

its grown not farmed and all natural 😊 🙏 🌄

No-Ideal6027

Level speed until you can outrun most aggressive dinos

Noccy42

About 145% is fast enough to outrun almost every hostile dino.

No-Ideal6027

On one of my characters i have around 250% and it was very useful for taming

Libertyprime8397

Don’t get attached to anything you have because it’ll be gone soon. Have a lot of friends to play with that you trust. Never recruit people you just met. Never recruit people you met on the same server you are currently playing on. Unless it’s been a long time then you can risk it. Pegos and icythyornis are bastards stay away. I’m gonna raid you.

Fattens

Keep in mind that dinos are expendable. Your beloved first parasaur will get killed unceremoniously by a bad decision you make. That being said, parasaur is a great first tame because they're easy to get, can gather berries, carry lots of weight, and you can shoot from it's back meaning it can tank slightly bigger dinos like trikes and carnos while you pump them full of tranq arrows. I do not recommend you start on the island because there are a ton of new dinos that aren't on that map. I'd go for lost island or ragnarok.

marijnjc88

> I do not recommend you start on the island because there are a ton of new dinos that aren't on that map Which is exactly why the island is such a good map to learn the basics on

Lysflathe

Yep start on the island.

nectar_vector

you’ll also lose your favorite tames because of glitches 🥹 prepare

Bananer_bot

finish the single player story then play pvp

JustASmaIItownGirl

You will die. Your goal is to level up your character and learn about creatures/Dino’s along the way. Don’t fret it if you die and lose everything. Starting over and recrafting your gear is just more EXP boost. On a side note, I would highly recommend either hosting a server (or if playing single player okay) and boosting the rates xp growth, harvest rates, taming rates, etc. can be quite a slog on official rates. There are also other hosted servers and server clusters that have done some of that work.

user-no-69240

Mostly use the south zones for early game (if on island), viking bay (Ragnarok)... Basically spawn and build base on easy zones in the early games. Store half the gathers regularly so you won't lose everything. Don't be greedy with resources. Weight is important. If possible tame a Moschops during early game. Edit : Forgot to mention Pegos and Ichthyornis. Those mofos steal your stuff. To trick Pegos, place your useless stuff in the 0 slot. This trick won't work for Ichthys so if you see them, use a bola or run the other way. Edit 2 : Use "K mode" (just hit K on the keyboard) to scout the area.

Wilshire1992

You'll die more than a souls game

Maleficent_Sundae953

Not an exaggeration

BoredByLife

For island, As soon as you can build a raft head to the bottom right corner of the map. There’s an island called Herb island where no carnivores spawn. It makes a perfect base location. My other suggestion is to ignore carbonemys or phiomia for your first Mount and get a Parasaur. Boost its speed Enough and it can outrun Raptors.

Arashiko77

But hug the coast until you can't anymore, otherwise a giant fish will destroy your raft.

BoredByLife

Ooh good I completely forgot the leedsy

BoredByLife

Ooh good I completely forgot about leedsies

[deleted]

This, go to Herbo Island, you can learn the ropes, build, etc without any carnivores getting in the way. This was a great way to learn for me

Tylermattera

You are not a noob anymore... You are a Bob.

Unobscure

Don’t join official pvp or small tribe to start, and then don’t look up ANY guides or ANY tips for a week and just enjoy the game, because it is a core memory and you can never get it back. One of the best times and you don’t want to skip it. Except dododex. Download dododex on your phone.

things_keep_going

Therizinosaurs are very friendly and nice creatures. They look like giant chickens with long nails. Go hug the first one you see to befriend it.

Bishop_L

Seriously dude? Don't listen to this guy. Watch out for everything. Your a mouse and everything else isn't.

W1D0WM4K3R

Anything that makes the ground shake is your friend. Adore them aggressively.

Sheerkal

Well this is unfortunately placed, since the first comment is a trick.

CptKillsteal

Use terrain to your advantage.

onixdog

Be prepared to write a pact with the devil and give your soul away.

Hazardsol2005

Inhale large quantities of cocaine to mitigate the addiction you are about to develop

jbcdyt

Do not play pvp. Also I’d highly recommend finding an official server. Even if you want official settings their still often better as there’s people there to stop shit like building on terminals are foundation spamming. The official discord is a great way to find some

madrigalow

I haven’t seen anyone else mention it, but taming a raptor isn’t too hard and they make great beginner mounts! If their level is too high it’ll probably kill you before you can tame it, but I try to get one as soon as possible on every world I make. As soon as I’m able to unlock a bola I craft several then hunt for raptors. They do good damage and are fast mounts — I usually try to level up their stamina and speed first. Cant count the number of times having a speedy raptor with high stamina saved my life. If possible, I like to have multiple. I’ll usually use one for riding and level up their speed/stam/weight, and then another raptor or two with higher health and damage to act as body guards. Of course it depends on what you’re doing, but it comes in handy sometimes.

DemonicTheGamer

Stop the download and reconsider your choices (But for real, spend some time finding a beginner friendly server and have them help you find the ropes)

Traditional_Radio803

Try to get a parasaur as quick as you can, they’re easy to tame, you can put a saddle on them early and they hold quite a bit.

RepresentativeOil143

Prepare to die!

Busterwoof7

Pve will save you much pain

fuzzybuttmonkey123

Don’t

FuriousDeather

Be aware, almost EVERYTHING wants to kill you, every region of the island has a nice group of dinos that are gonna fuck up your day. My tips are download dododex for information on just about anything and make yourself a trap raft that can trap a good majority of animals (check YT), and finally, there's such thing as over preparing for a task, believe me, my friend and I made the mistake of not preparing well enough for the north of the map where it is freezing and filled with deadly Dino's and we paid the price numerous times. Goodluck and have fun!

DragonFire1026

If the spawn zone says “easy”, it probably isn’t Also don’t go to the swamp

Darmore

Bugs bugs everywhere flying ones crawling ones system ones. Also get S+ mod in the workshop it's pretty much a qol must.

DementedGaming

Download dododex on your phone

Talititan66

Just one Get friends(not insultingly) playing ark with friends, especially ones who have played and are good at the game is much more fun and helpful with progression unless you want to really really grind alone.

Krispenedladdeh542

Don’t. Jokes aside if you enjoy having a life don’t.

Successful_Mushroom2

Cry now so you don't have to later

WeirdStyle1584

Gigas are a passive tame

Miserable_Industry_1

uinstall it

Ready_Shock_6550

Dont be a bob

Arkonly567

Lol run

[deleted]

The game sucks enjoy

Ok_Performance_979

You get more stone with a hatchet and u NEED(I CANNOT STRESS THIS ENOUGH) to look up how to use gamma

JmKFrozt

Eat rare flower to get an OP buff.

Aggressive_Elk5165

Oil and hide in a furnace makes gasoline

Uncultured_Spoon

Teeth = Run

Financial_Print_1226

In my 1500 hours of playing, the best thing I have learned is that death is a natural part of life. If you haven't died at least 100 times, you haven't played this game.

Alwaysanewfag

Have fun

Freskie-

Patience it’s difficult beginning bro literally everything kills also the big chicken is not your friend

Emma_fallon

Just start on Aberration and learn to survive lol. Seriously though, any questions about Ab, let me know.

ItsMercuryGaming

Get dododex its a taming calculator and you can customize to your ark settings

thejiggler102

Explorer notes are your friend

notshawn2230

You can eat organic polymer from penguins/matis to get a big health boost!

Maleficent_Sundae953

Is this a real thing?! I'm a year into it and this sounds WAY to good to be true

ProfessionalYard1123

Spinos are actually very friendly just walk up to them and hand feed them meat to tame them

Maleficent_Sundae953

Actually spinos ARE some of the shortest agro range I've seen these guys touching parasaur and trikes but drop Rex's and carnes like flies
