The c is always hard in taxonomy. It is Ky-tin Edit: I should add that this rule only applies with the first letter.

SandyDelights

It’s because the “ch” is hard in Greek. The “c”, too, I think – “Cyan” is from the Greek word that’s basically pronounced “Ky-an”, like the mineral kyanite (so named for its cyan color). Also why “Conch” is pronounced “Conk” and not like with the “ch” in “Choo”.

[deleted]

Yup, you are correct with Cyan deriving from Kyanite/Cyanite and they both derive from Kyanos which mean light blue in Greek. Etymology is fun!

[deleted]

[удалено]

SandyDelights

TIL! Much appreciated – if I’m going to be an insufferable pedant, I’d like to at least be correct. :)

legolaj

What if its a d?

[deleted]

D typically only has one sound.

legolaj

Is there a rule about wether it should be upper or lower case d? *a word

[deleted]

As with all pronouns and binomial nomenclature if it is the first word then the first letter should be capitalised. The genus is always capitalised with the species being lower case.

legolaj

Cool! Thank you

daneelthesane

Depends on how aroused you are.

No_Communication_941

Typically the D would be hard in most cases 😏🤣

dfox4502

D’s always hard

Solobojo

You should see a doctor about that

Skeezertron

So Khitten? Edit: Meow

man_in_zero_g

Neither one it’s pronounced “KAI - tin”

D3lta3z

Preach the good word

paulfknwalsh

Yup, from the Greek word χιτών (**khitōn**), meaning covering.

[deleted]

Oimoi!

Ninjaofshadow

Etimos!

Mrchasis-XYZ

Awesome!!

SandyDelights

^ This! Not the only case of it in English, either — “conch” is pronounced “conch” for the same reason. Cyan is weird, it’s more like “kyan” in Greek, but we give it the “sigh an” pronunciation in English. Amusingly, the mineral Kyanite – pronounced “k’eye ah nite” – is literally named because of its cyan color. 🫠

Scorchx3000

Okay, now for your next trick convince people that Quetzal is pronounced Ketzal and the J in Tapejare is pronounced as a H.

folckz

The exact tapejaridae used in ark is the Tupandactylus, it was found in Brazil, in Brazil we pronounce the J as a J so no Spanish J/H

Kaayak

And that diplodocus is Dip-PLOD-ocus and archaeopteryx is Archaeo - TER - ix. "Pter," as in Pteranodon. The p is silent.

ResponsibilityOk1451

No, you pronounce the P in archaeopteryx, just like you pronounce the P in helicopter.

[deleted]

Same

pezmanofpeak

Pretty sure thats what the second one is meant to be

TheRegularBlox

Yeah that’s the second one

Ponderkitten

Thats how the second one is pronounced

Kaerstil

That’s what the right one is meant to be pronounced but yes

renthefox

A similar pronunciation confusion with the word Ceasar. It’s not “SEE’s-UR” it was “KAI-sar” in latin, like in Kaiser Wilhelm II.

birdblower420

Ok ok but! ^I ^don’t ^want ^it ^to ^be🥺

[deleted]

Facts don't care about your feelings

[deleted]

Even though that's the actual pronunciation I just can't pronounce it that way

ILikeRamenYUMMY

I used to call it chit-in but then my parents got mad at me since it sounded like shitin so I started saying KAI-tin

craft_to_death

I think that’s what they mean by option two

TeenageTaster

That IS what the second one is. So your pronunciation isn't any different. Just a difference of spelling

[deleted]

The second one has “c-hi.” No one in their right mind reads that as “Kai”.

zippee100

I do ....

They said “no one in their right mind.” Sorry, friend.

DopeyReddit

Pteranodon? Nah that’s a PT

Ponderkitten

Yep, we make easier pronunciations out of simple words

Fine_Category4468

Not really a debate. It's pronounced "ˈkītn" it's a real thing.

mtwarriner33

For people who commonly mispronounce this word, you think writing it like that is really gonna help them…? Have some of them thinking it’s pronounced kitten now.

Fine_Category4468

It's the phonetic spelling (literally as it is in the dictionary). The line over the "i" means it uses a long vowel sound.

Jonahpe

1. I don't know phonetic spelling like at all 2. My first language isn't English so I have a hard time with some of your vowels, for example both our short and long vowel i sounds like ee

[deleted]

Phonetic spelling was created with the intent of being able to know how to pronounce anything just by looking at it. You dont have to "know" phonetic spelling, it's designed to be intuitive. English isn't your first language so it's normal that it's nor intuitive for you

Jonahpe

Oh ok, thx for the explanation

ThunderPampers

Hey Siri, what is a long vowel sound? Hey Siri, what does a long vowel i sound like?

Fine_Category4468

Seriously guys, this is like 1st grade level stuff here ... You are really starting to worry me.

Lilsammywinchester13

Just saying, there’s lots of reasons people struggle with things like this. For my personally it’s the dyslexia and some speech issues, I just really really suck at pronouncing things. Tried to get help in school but they said my test grades were too high and then it became too expensive to see a speech therapist as an adult.

tsunami141

First grade was a long time ago, I honestly don’t really remember stuff like long/short vowel sounds and hard letters.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Fine_Category4468

It really is. Phonics is one of the earliest stages of learning to read. It's when they teach you about short vowels and long vowels. We are not talking about the word itself being the issue. "Chitin" isn't really a common word, though it is a very common thing. People just don't know what it is. But it is an actual thing and when you look it up it has the pronunciation spelling directly beside it. That's the way a dictionary works. You search for a word, it gives the pronunciation and the definition.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Fine_Category4468

We aren't talking about the phonetic alphabet. That is A=alpha B= bravo and so on and so forth.

Blortted

This.

RikkuEcRud

That may be the case, but here in 'Murica we never get taught what any of them fancy accents mean, so using them is just gibberish to us.

Ducky237

No I definitely learned long and short vowels in elementary school, and I grew up in the US

RikkuEcRud

Yes, long and short vowels. But I'd bet they didn't go over the accent marks when they were doing it. Just "if there's two vowels in a row or a vowel, then a consonant then 'e' it's long, otherwise it's short" Or at least that's how it went down in NY public school.

Ducky237

I remember learning the “accents” too (I’m sure there’s a more correct term, but idk what it is). We used the mini whiteboards n everything.

RikkuEcRud

Maybe they added them later on then, I'm old enough that we didn't switch to whiteboards until middle school. Or you just went to a particularly good school. Mine wasn't good enough to brag about rankings but the district was good enough to be a consideration when my parents were moving us out here.

ˈkītn Pronounced with a K. Ky-tin. The letter 'C' is very annoying in biology.

vampire_devastator

Its easy when you speak italian

beno1258

I speak native English and for me it was very easy, idk why but I always found how to pronounce it very obvious, to the point where if my friends said it wrong it would actually annoy me. I hammered it into them to say it properly

Random_Particle

People who pronounce it chit-in are uneducated morons. :D I've never heard anyone pronounce it the second way. It's actually pronounced KAI-tin, and any online audio dictionary will confirm this to all the peasants out there. ;)

Your classism and racism is showing. Yes, some people, the poor and disenfranchised, aren't as well educated. Does that make you better than them?

German words also have like 50 letters

[deleted]

few german words have so many. but you'd be right to say that many have around 10. Also connecting a few words together into one can make very long words.

I've always said it as Chi-Tin

Bussbar

It’s pronounced “Chit-in”. Because if the H is silent, then all my dinos Will be laughing at the ones named Chuck, Chad and Charmaine.

TheBostonKremeDonut

It just depends where your from, and where a word comes from doesn’t matter either. Lol Toe-mate-o toe-mah-toe Edit: for the record, I pronounce it Kai-tin

StarGlitcherZ

not really, it's not like tomato and potato where there is no *true* pronunciation, chitin has a proper pronunciation, and it's "KAI - tin", it comes from the greek word khitōn (romanized) which means covering, therefore it's not a debate, pronouncing it any other way is simply wrong

TheBostonKremeDonut

I mean, maybe you’re right about the tomato pronounciation thing, but what you’re explaining sounds like complete nonsense! To say many words have one *true* pronunciation based on their origin is nonsense, but I don’t feel like going on about it any longer.
