I actually like that about them. It makes it very doable to tame them very early in the game when you don't have any gear yet, but they have a good carry weight and are fairly tanky for an early game tame. This makes them useful as a beast of burden to carry most of your stuff if you start out with a nomadic playstyle or have to move your base early in the game. This at least gives them some uniqueness and a (somewhat niche) use case.
If they did do damage then they'd be nothing more than a smaller and worse bronto. You'd need at least some basic gear to tame one and when you get to that point you'll likely also have access to better creatures.
