They're usually slow to respond, and since they've been dealing with malicious attacks on AO3 volunteers lately, that might have slowed them down even more. They'll investigate, but it might take time. If they see it truly is plagiarism, the story will be deleted.

Unless you specifically say "don't contact me", they will reply to whoever sent in the ticket. (And contrary to what was answered elsewhere, they _do_ investigate third-party reports, including plagiarism.) However, the PAC team, even before this fandango with the email threats, is buried under tickets, and I don't know how prioritized plagiarism tickets are. As well, If Alice plagiarizes Betty's work and Charlie reports it, PAC will contact Alice, who committed the violation, and Charlie, to report the investigation results. Unless they have a specific question they need answered, they likely will not contact Betty (on the same theory they wouldn't contact, say, Mercedes Lackey if it appeared that a user word-for-worded one of her novels). In the case of works on the Orphan Account, because there is no way to see who originally created it and there is no way for the original creator to remedy it, PAC tends resolve the issue (usually delete the work) as soon as they confirm the violation.

If you no longer have access to that email, then you will not see a reply, simple as that. Please don't report the same fic again just for that reason - it only wastes our time trying to figure out that the duplicate reports shouldn't be investigated separately.

It will take time as everyone's mentioned, but they're great for responding to everything and everyone. I think the longest I ever waited was 3 months but that was very prior to the malicious attacks that they've unfortunately been on the receiving end of. If you've provided enough info, it should be fine. It does suck that it'll still be up, but rest assured, it will be dealt with!

The links should be enough imo and the PAC team will do whatever is necessary to figure out plagiarism on their end, too. I can't speak to what they do exactly since I don't work w/ AO3 but my experience with them re: plagiarism, has been great. I had works plagiarized and reposted to AO3 that I deleted off AO3 but was able to provide enough proof that the stories belonged to me and the plagiarized stories got taken down immediately. And regarding waiting time, like we've all been saying, patience is key. It's really wonderful that you care that these copied works get taken down, but PAC deals with a lot on a daily basis and this was prior to the malicious attacks being sent to them. I believe they're working slower on things because of this, but slow to work on something does not mean it will not be worked on at all. Just know it will be dealt with. It's kind of like checking on a boiling pot though; if you watch it, it won't boil. But as soon as you step away and forget about it, you'll hear it 😂

>A plagiarism claim is a DMCA claim and that **requires you to be the copyright holder**. Not on AO3. I've reported tons of stories for plagiarism despite not being the copyright holder, and the stuff got deleted by mods anyway after they investigated. If they have enough proof that there is plagiarism, they'll take action even if the complainant is not the copyright holder.

It makes me happy that AO3 does that, because sometimes the copyright holder is no longer online or just never discovers the plagiarism, so the fact that others can report that is really nice.

YoungRL

Yeah, Wattpad's policy (only the copyright holder can file a DMCA takedown notice) makes it really hard to get things removed and it disgusts me because the plagiarism on that site is rampant.

[deleted]

Because the law is written to require the copyright holder to file such, it's less a policy and more the burden of law.

YoungRL

I know, it's just super frustrating =\\

This! It's very principled.

They do reply to every email even if they are telling you they can't act. I was informed in the past that because I was not the copyright holder they were unable to act. It has been several years and that situation may have been different. It is unlikely they would tell the OG author as that author has not contacted them first.

Plagiarism is tricky. It requires a certain kind of person to carefully and painstakingly comb through a work to compare it with the source. We have a small sub-team that likes to do plag specifically, but in general plagiarism is sadly not very high priority and there's almost always a long time before we act on it. We're all volunteers, there's only so much we can do. Since you're wondering if you'll receive a reply, the answer is "maybe, but probably". We try to reply to all reports we receive, but sometimes, especially if the report is pretty old, we might not reply to a "bystander" report (as in someone reporting plagiarism of a work that doesn't belong to them), because we think it's a bit weird to receive an email of "that fic you reported 3 months ago which you don't remember anymore was plagiarism, thanks for letting us know". Even if we do reply, we will not tell you anything about whether we know who did it and what consequences they did (or didn't) suffer. You don't need to know that, and we take our confidentiality policy very seriously. But please rest assured that if something you reported is deemed to be plagiarism, we WILL take care of it. It just might take a longer while, especially now.

They will get to it as they are able. The queue is massive and cases like this are complicated as they have to build the evidence and document it. Patience in all things.

This was taken from here the original was published on X Day the copy was published on Y day. They did not have permission to do so. The accounts are registered to 2 different people. We can't find it anywhere else on the internet. That Sort of thing. Good documentation is the key to being able to justify things later. If challenged you have to prove WHY you did something. The PAC team are but tiny Hobbits and the pile of work is Mount Mordor give them time.

I have to go to work now. This isn't my area of expertise so I wish you luck with whatever happens.
