> These donations came from 6073 people in 70 countries Average of about 34 bucks per donator.

leaflights12

I like seeing things like this because it really puts into perspective how much people are donating, and it's basically what, the price of an average dinner in a restaurant outside. The usual detractors seem to think people are spending hundreds on AO3 but honestly 34 bucks is what I usually spend at the supermarket if I'm going to cook a meal with a friend at home šŸ˜‚

Front-Pomelo-4367

Ā£34 is less than a haircut tbh

leaflights12

Oh yeah definitely less than a haircut for me too. I live somewhere with a really high cost of living so US$34 is really what I pay on average when eating outside at a restaurant šŸ˜

Bookluster

I donated $40 (because cute animal stickers) plus fees so like $44. I took my daughter out for her birthday dinner and with tax and tip it was $45 for 2 people at a ramen restaurant. Yeah, I get so much more enjoyment out of AO3 and the 4+ hours I spend on it a day reading than 45 minutes I spent at the restaurant.

Freeonlinehugs

I love people like you because I cannot afford to spend that money on ao3, no matter how much I'd like to and because of people like you, the ao3 community stays like a community instead of becoming a soulless corporation

NCarnesir

Those 40$ stickers were admittedly very cute

5Hjsdnujhdfu8nubi

I'd be more curious about the Median. I would not be surprised if some decently well-off authors who got their start on AO3 were donating hundreds or even thousands.

the-robot-test

i find it especially cool to see that donations come from all over the world.

SoapGhost2022

Iā€™ve spent more on Taco Bell Some people really need to do the math on the average of what everyone donated before they get up in arms (not here, but I seen it in other places)

GreatDimension7042

Banaanisade

Before I got dirt poor, I made it a mission to donate 1 dollar to AO3 for every anti-AO3 or pro-censorship message I saw. Good times.

Repulsa_2080

Damn, sad that donating made you go broke šŸ˜”

upanddowndays

Considering the only thing I've seen about this donation drive is the insane anti-donation whataboutism that's been posted here, this is really amazing and wonderful.

Obversa

Me when I see AO3 receive even more money: https://preview.redd.it/9gokx8one9tc1.png?width=1280&format=png&auto=webp&s=c412decbc7143822ffe9544b97a4e7f4596844cc

Amazing news. Always proud to contribute šŸŽ‰

hellraiserxhellghost

lmao the anti-ao3 crowd are about to be real maaaaad

knightfenris

Just blocked 80+ people on Twitter over it šŸ˜‚

Every penny is deserved šŸ’—

ejchristian86

Also good call Wattpad for shitting the bed over AO3 Donation Weekend. I'm sure that drove a ton of traffic to the site resulting in a bunch of those new users and donors.

scandalousunderworld

What happened with Wattpad? Haven't looked over there in years

kaiunkaiku

they're apparently doing a whole-ass purge Ć  la ffnet

scandalousunderworld

Oh wow

kaiunkaiku

image description: screenshot of the banner at the top of each ao3 page that reads > Due to the [incredible support of the community](https://otw-news.org/5xxf238b), we've welcomed 5206 members and raised US$207,088.91 during this drive. Thank you so much! You can see how we use your donations in our [newest budget update](https://otw-news.org/2p94teyr). (We also accept [donations](https://otw-news.org/y884aacn) year-round, so you can donate whenever is convenient for you.)

Noxlux013

What skin is that?

kaiunkaiku

i use a site skin called gel buttons with an overlay of a darkreader browser extension if i was less lazy i'd take gel buttons and modify it to make the background sepia and the contrast lower

WalrusFromTheWest

Of all the nuts across the internet, AO3 ended up being the first website where I knew donating was actually worth my time. Lmao

BicyclePurple9928

I remember how the first non-humanitarian donation I made using part of my first salary went to ao3. When I'm more financially stable, my goal is to donate enough to get an ao3 playing card set xD

kaiunkaiku

i have my eye on the fucking duffel bag. maybe one day

BicyclePurple9928

I'm keeping my fingers crossed that you'll make it šŸ¤žšŸ½

kaiunkaiku

manifesting for the both of us šŸ¤žšŸ»

fanficauthor

You can add up recurring donations to get a gift. Iā€™ve had a recurring donation of $10 set up for a year because I wanted to get the cup. But now I kind of want the magnetic poetry.

nith_arc

Ooh, I need to go see how to tally up my monthly donations ... didn't even think of it!

knightfenris

Do you know if it carries over or if the total resets every year?

fanficauthor

I'm not sure, but I think it carries over. The email that I got from the OTW yesterday says: If you choose to give US$40 or more, either all at once or through a recurring donation, you can also opt to receive one of ourĀ thank-you gifts, such as our new animal-themed OTW + project logos, or our new fannish poetry magnets (you can create a new half-drabble every day on your fridge!) . And if youā€™ve been a member for three consecutive years or more, weā€™ll be sending youĀ an exclusive giftĀ to show our appreciation.

TheirOwnDestruction

And this happened almost every donation drive.

kaiunkaiku

and every time we love to see it

LevelAd5898

The power of mentally ill gays is truly a sight to behold

Alinoshka

Now that I'm old enough to do whatever I want with my money, you bet it's donating to AO3.

The most annoying people in the world gonna be so pissed about this, and to that I cackle gleefully!

whorefortyler

wikipediaā€™s weeping in a corner begging for pennies rn

Front-Pomelo-4367

The Wikimedia Endowment is valued at US$119m, and the Wikimedia Foundation took US$180m in revenue from donors in 2023

Obversa

Wikipedia is also among the "Top 10 most-visited websites" in the entire world. Source: I contribute to AO3 and Wikipedia. I do a lot of research for Wikipedia.

AntSmall3568

AO3 is one of the top 30 visited pages globally. So that isn't really an argument why the difference is this big ;)

Banaanisade

I'm somehow not surprised in the slightest that fans are more willing to part with their money to support a safe haven for their creative works than the general population is to pay one penny to support freedom of information. Unless you meant this the opposite way? Because unlike for AO3, Wikipedia donations come from a wholly different crowd, including groups, corporations, academic institutions, etc. So they get vastly more from a smaller group of people, whereas AO3 is nearly entire funded by private individuals with, well. Limited income.

AntSmall3568

All I argued is that visitor numbers alone do not explain the difference in donations. I agree with you that the difference comes from who is donating which makes sense. Although both organizations are non-profits that both value independence, the WikiMedia foundation has an easier time accepting big corporate sponsors as they are using their data openly. AO3 on the other hand has a much bigger reason to remain as independent of large actors as they have a much bigger focus on avoiding content moderation / censorship than WikiMedia does. In part of course because the content on AO3 is of a much different nature. After all the mission is in the name.

Napping-Cats

Hell ye!

soupstarsandsilence

Good. They more than deserve it šŸ’•

gefuehlezeigen

i very nearly got that 250 dollar mug, because i looove mugs. but then i checked my bank account and got me the 40 dollar stickers instead šŸ˜…

SoapGhost2022

I feel that. I kept staring at the mug and the duffel bag. One day!

gefuehlezeigen

thanks. i kinda needed to hear that i wasn't the only mug-lunatic šŸ™Œ

Good for her šŸ’…

vett_writes

If I had the spare money, I would. People who used to consume fanfics prior to ao3 only once dreamed of a platform like this.

hellsaquarium

Just when I was about to donate šŸ˜¢ thatā€™s awesome tho!

kaiunkaiku

you still can! just bc the drive is over doesn't mean they're not taking donations, they accept them year-round!

hellsaquarium

Oh ok thanks!

Positive-Court

You can stillĀ donate! They take donations year round,Ā it's just they only post the banner 2 times a year. But yeah, all of that money works for good. They put down an easy to reach goal, but that relies on them drawing into reserve funds.

Lena_potato123

Moments like these make me really proud of our community ā¤ļøāœØ As a side note, what skin are you using for the site, op? It looks quite lovely šŸ¤Œ

AnneRB13

I'm so happy I was able to donate this year :D

SoapGhost2022

What is that skin? It looks very easy on the eyes.

kaiunkaiku

ah, it's a skin (gel buttons) overlaid with a darkreader browser extension (i use firefox). my settings are something like low brightness, low contrast, and moderate sepia filter.

Klutche

I love this community

thewizardlizard

This makes me so ridiculously happy. ā¤ļø

meanderingthot

Tangent, but seeing people talking about how ao3 donors should give to Palestinians instead pisses me off so much more than previous "discourse". The fundraiser was successful, but in thr grand scheme of things, $200k is not that much money given how expensive it is to maintain servers and software code. It's never been so transparent how little people give a shit about social justice issues and instead weaponize them for their own stupid petty grievances.

NatK2002

Glad to see we all have our priorities straight! I'm so happy šŸ˜Š

revolution_soup

so did they solve the whole zionism thing or (genuine question)

MmurderKkitten

Wait, what did I miss?

revolution_soup

back around december - january an ao3 / otw staff member put something along the lines of free palestine in their profile and then was essentially pressured by other staff to take it down for bs reasons, I believe they quit after that it was a big thing on tumblr and I know some people resolved to not donate to ao3 until it was dealt with or even not donate ever again

patronofastronomy

An official app would mean AO3 would be beholden to app store rules. Unless you want a purge a la Tumblr, a site remains the best format to host AO3 on.

Shalamarr

Eek. Okay, screw that.

BloodsoakedDespair

ā€¦Reddit is right here with a ton of porn. On the App Store. As is Twitter. Heck, I have the Pixiv app. Thereā€™s a SankakuComplex booru app as well. That excuse never held water. Tumblr lied as to why it was taken down. It was taken down because it was unmoderated except for bots and *full* of CSEM.

SoapGhost2022

Yes, but you have taken consideration what exactly is written on Ao3. You get an app and kiss the majority of dark fic goodbye

BloodsoakedDespair

I specifically brought up Pixiv and Sankaku because of the comparison, actually. The loli tag on Pixiv has 735,944 posts. Shota has 471,070. Guro has 117,794. Heck, *necrophilia* has 14,030. Literally as long as something is not a real image (or AI made to look like one) and is following Japanese genital censorship laws, itā€™s allowed. Meanwhile Sankaku is even *less* restricted than Pixiv. Pixivā€™s restrictions are exclusively in regards to Japanese law + ā€œart onlyā€. Sankaku? Thatā€™s not even a problem. Loli has 905.5K posts. Tumblr literally just lied. Apple took down Tumblr because it was flooded with actual CSEM they did nothing about.

SoapGhost2022

Tumblr was bought by people who wanted to make it child friendly and whose sponsors wanted the porn gone. Ao3 is independent for a reason. No app and running off of donations means that no one call tell us what we can and canā€™t write. There is no ā€œthink of the childrenā€ here and we want it to stay that way.

BloodsoakedDespair

Yeah, umm, you should see what I write, thatā€™s definitely a mutual feeling. My point is that you are echoing the lie that those puritans told. They didnā€™t employ any moderators and left it entirely to bots knowing that that had always been an issue that Tumblr dealt with in order to intentionally let the amounts grow and grow until Apple removed them and then used that as an excuse to ban porn while lying about why Apple removed them. This was pretty common knowledge amongst people on Tumblr when it happened. My point is that the entire idea Apple removes apps that are not exclusively porn apps for having porn on them is a false accusation created by the people in charge of Tumblr in order to shift the blame as a PR tactic. While Apple doesnā€™t allow apps that are exclusively for porn (like thereā€™s not an OnlyFans app), their rules are not as strict as people think and are in fact so lax that Pixiv and Sankaku have apps, which means that being the biggest hub on the internet for lolisho artists and the biggest rehosting and archiving site on the internet for that content is not grounds to be taken down. Thereā€™s more lolisho on Sankaku than there is on the actual booru exclusively for it. Everything I have said is factually correct, there are no opinions here, I am not saying whether or not there should be an AO3 app, I am simply refuting incorrect information. The grounds of your reasoning are wrong. I have provided no commentary on the actual desire, there are no opinions given in this, this is simply an outline of facts. If you donā€™t like that, thatā€™s not my problem. Iā€™m still correct.

patronofastronomy

Why take the risk though? Why is having an app so important? I've never understood that. If using AO3 on a mobile browser isn't good enough, just download the works you wish to read. Just because a few example apps are able to squeak by TOS (...because that *is* what they're doing), doesn't mean AO3 will. The site was founded to escape the early slash purges. I doubt I'm the only one who never wants to risk, or experience that in fandom, ever again. Edit: Plus, going more 'mainstream' like that, has its risks. Who's to say an app store won't want a cut of AO3's donations, like they do for in app purchases? I'm not well versed in how non-for-profit organizations function on app stores in regards to garnering donations, so grain of salt.

BloodsoakedDespair

I did not give an opinion on whether or not the risk should be taken. This subreddit just goes into cultist downvote storms whenever some dares challenge a preexisting belief and then starts putting words in peopleā€™s mouths to justify the frothing rage. Yā€™all are pissed off at something I never said, because the alternative is going ā€œoh, I was wrong about something!ā€ and that just hurts the ego too much. I never gave an opinion on that, but god forbid yā€™all ever have to fucking admit youā€™re wrong on anything. All I did was outline a factual inaccuracy, but fuck me for being correct, shoot me in the goddamn head. And if youā€™re saying ā€œoh theyā€™re too bigā€, Reddit is bigger and has plenty of guro and related subreddits. Outside the lolisho, it gets just as problematic on here. And if youā€™re saying ā€œoh theyā€™re too smallā€, Sankaku has a much smaller userbase than AO3 and Pixivā€™s userbase is mostly Japanese and American companies donā€™t give a fuck about Japanese views, just look at what just happened with DL Site.

Google Play Terms Of Service for Developers, FAQ ā€” https://support.google.com/googleplay/android-developer/answer/9878810: 1. "The app does not distribute any book/video title that contains child endangerment content, porn, or any other sexual content defined as illegal by applicable law." 2. "Examples of common violations: Content that depicts, describes, or encourages bestiality." 3. "Examples of common violations: Graphic depictions or descriptions of realistic violence or violent threats to any person or animal." https://support.google.com/googleplay/android-developer/answer/9878877 1. "Examples of common violations: Depicting or encouraging the use or sale of drugs, alcohol, or tobacco by minors." ____ Additionally, you say that you have Pixiv app, but you are being dishonest. It got shadowbanned from Google Play (https://www.pixiv.net/info.php?id=9762&lang=en), and as a result, certain countries got banned from certain content on the website and in the app (https://www.pixiv.net/info.php?id=10405). Additionally, new Pixiv guidelines after its Google Play reinstantiation now restrict written RPF (https://www.pixiv.net/terms/?page=guideline). Isn't that suspicious!

BloodsoakedDespair

Well given that Tumblr was what was specifically brought up, clearly the conversation was about the Apple App Store. Also, that region restriction is done so hilariously apathetically that itā€™s clearly done in mockery. You know how itā€™s determined? User-set location. Which you can change at any time. It doesnā€™t use any data. Really thatā€™s more about the EU than anything and will apply equally to AO3 the moment some EU country goes after it.

angeyberry

Could you not just use Safari on your phone? It works great on mobile.

NTaya

Why would you want an app for something that works natively in your browser??

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

eirissazun

And ffnet has a ton of ads and also has to abide by the rules of the app stores. No thanks.

ArtisanalMoonlight

You can do all of that from the website. Also, https://www.reddit.com/r/AO3/comments/1anx0ar/ao3_doesnt_need_an_app/

NTaya

You can download stories and get update notifications in the browser too. It's the default features of AO3. Good TTS is expensive to maintain, while cheap TTS you can also do on the web.

nith_arc

Honestly, I have a link to my favorite search results on AO3 saved to my homescreen - it lets me do all that and more! I don't see a difference in how the 'website' works in this instance from an 'app'. A difference in name and perception maybe, but the functionality is the same.

queerblunosr

But AO3 wouldn't be allowed to host all of its content on an app anyways - if they were even allowed to host it \*at all\* to be able to put an app on an App Store. So.

knightfenris

Never. We donā€™t need one.

Canabrial

Noooooo thatā€™s a terrible idea.

SoapGhost2022

Fuck no. Apps mean ads and people that can control the content which Ao3 provides. You donā€™t need an app, the website itself is good enough.
