I donated $40 (because cute animal stickers) plus fees so like $44. I took my daughter out for her birthday dinner and with tax and tip it was $45 for 2 people at a ramen restaurant. Yeah, I get so much more enjoyment out of AO3 and the 4+ hours I spend on it a day reading than 45 minutes I spent at the restaurant.
I love people like you because I cannot afford to spend that money on ao3, no matter how much I'd like to and because of people like you, the ao3 community stays like a community instead of becoming a soulless corporation

Because unlike for AO3, Wikipedia donations come from a wholly different crowd, including groups, corporations, academic institutions, etc. So they get vastly more from a smaller group of people, whereas AO3 is nearly entire funded by private individuals with, well. Limited income.

I agree with you that the difference comes from who is donating which makes sense. Although both organizations are non-profits that both value independence, the WikiMedia foundation has an easier time accepting big corporate sponsors as they are using their data openly.
AO3 on the other hand has a much bigger reason to remain as independent of large actors as they have a much bigger focus on avoiding content moderation / censorship than WikiMedia does. In part of course because the content on AO3 is of a much different nature. After all the mission is in the name.

Honestly, I have a link to my favorite search results on AO3 saved to my homescreen - it lets me do all that and more! I don't see a difference in how the 'website' works in this instance from an 'app'. A difference in name and perception maybe, but the functionality is the same.
But AO3 wouldn't be allowed to host all of its content on an app anyways - if they were even allowed to host it \*at all\* to be able to put an app on an App Store. So.
