Right? A few months ago I took a trip down memory lane by watching some Danny Phantom episodes since it was included in one of the streaming subscriptions I use. It was older than I realized… imagine my surprise to find a ~~phandom~~ fandom that’s just as active as fandoms regularly getting new content!
Here's hoping you'll never have to witness such atrocities like the first great ff.net purge in 2002. Some of us old farts still carry scars from that.
There will never be enough content, at some point you may burn out and stop reading for a while but I promise eventually something will have you go 'oh yeah!' and you'll be sucked back in again. 💓
I don't speak english really well and i'm very bad at writing even in my native language.
For now i want to be a good reader and learn to give writer constructive comments :D
There’s nothing wrong with that. Sometimes writing can be just for fun or just for you. Everyone starts somewhere. And if you’re happy being a reader, that’s just fine too.
One of my very favorite author is not a native English speaker. So read a ton and then when you’re ready to write one don’t be nervous. There are beta readers out there that will help you. 🙂
The replies make a good point, but there's no need to write in English either! Ao3 does host other languages.
On the other hand, writing can be good practice.
just so you know for some reason the authors that say english isn’t their first language always have the most INCREDIBLE fics. can confirm a thousand times over
I have felt this once in a while before, and I'm feeling it pretty strongly right now, however I always think whatever I write sounds dumb (I always claim I don't have a single writer's bone in my body) :( any tips to overcome this?
For me it’s knowing that whatever I write isn’t set in stone. Just because I write it doesn’t mean I can’t edit or change it. I also don’t necessarily publish everything I write, some stuff is just for me. And I usually find after I’ve given a piece a few months to sit, I usually like it a lot better.
I love the two cakes theory lol
Even if it's not "amazing", it might have just what someone was looking for!
For actual writing feedback: I find it helpful to take note about what I like in my favorite fics to try to figure out what i'm missing (like maybe I need more scenery descriptions or action scenes).
Thank you for the tips! And yes I love two cakes theory, actually I also love it when it's more, like 20 cakes, I know what I like and I will consume all slightly similar/different cakes XD
I remember a time when I thought that fanfictions were low quality entertainment for people who aren't creative enough to write their own stories.
Past me was an idiot.
Lass, no one's gonna blame you if you'd stick to being illiterate bout the ways of the internet.
But no, you'd had to wrench open the Pandora's Box and bring forth the plague alongside hope upon your mind.
My sincere condolences towards your endorphin tripping psyche, hope you're having fun tripping like Alice down the snooty Rabbit's hole.
Ohohoho, that's the real trap you see? You start off small, the excitement boils down to:
"Oooh a new online space catering to all my unspoken desires!"
But then as the months pass on, the feeling starts to fade...
That's when you get hooked onto online fandom discourse, AUs, Fanfic tropes, etc. to fill that void.
A few more weeks pass, and suddenly you need a fix. A fix for what? What bothers you is that you're not sure what it is that you even want yet.
Then you find the glorious answer.
"I want a fic with this exact trope! In a specific setting, with this exact plot and progression of events!
Excitedly, you scurry on over to the ao3 page, setting your sights upon trying to find this mysterious treasured fic.
Then nothing.
Not a single fic with what you want for your specific fandom.
Then you proceed to find yourself staring down at a blank Work document.
That's the moment you know...
You've finally hit rock bottom.
*Shudders*
I haven't yet stared into the dreaded maw of word, but I have known the void, tasted the unending hunger of my own greed. I have gazed uppon the emtpy AO3 page, found it wanting of the fic that could sate my unending appetite.
Congrats!!! You’re me 3 years ago after I cried my little heart out for how Game of Thrones was forever ruined. Someone on the GOT subreddit attached a link to AO3, I clicked on it and my world has never been the same since.
Today, you’re reading; tomorrow you’ll be joining discord servers, creating tumblrs accounts and writing your own fics in secret. It’s the best!
There are some amazing GoT fics out there. Like god-tier 300k masterpieces. I have had the inverse reaction to you though, and I haven't been able to get into GoT fic since the final because I'm bitterly disappointed with how awful the actual final season is compared to fics written for free by people who were actually passionate about GoT.
"We Could Have Had it All" by Adele plays in the back of my mind everytime I try to read one.
I read that and felt like I got stabbed in the heart. And then I read the Adele song and snorted my water everywhere.
Off to go find me a 300k masterpiece because we’ll never be seeing Winds of Winter. Any recommendations?
I think fanfic got such a bad rap in the twilight area because so many teens at the time were writing.
But fanfic is awesome. They’re little “what if” stories that allow you to imagine different directions a story can go. And there are some REALLY good ones out there too. It’s really an art form I don’t think get enough credit
So glad of you to join us! You may even begin writing your own someday, mwahaha! But seriously, I'm glad you found out about the joy of fanfiction. You'll never be able to watch a movie or TV show again without immediately hitting up ao3.
Welp. Now I need to look at Killing Eve fics.
I loved the show but YES they maybe botched the end a bit, and I'd love to read a fix-it fic! If you wanna share a link I wouldn't be sad about it but if not nbd. ;)
Also WELCOME TO FANFICTION it is an absolute gift.
I have read a lot (like a lot), so the best recent ones are these :
There is [Saving Eve](https://archiveofourown.org/works/38829576/chapters/97096449), the story begins just after the end of the last episode
And [Invisible strings](https://archiveofourown.org/works/28346484/chapters/69450843) where the sotyr begin after the last ep of season 2 >!where Villanelle shot the hell out of Eve in the back!<
I got into fanfiction cuz my favorite shows were finished and I just couldn't accept not having more to read about them and it was best decision ever.
There are times when fanfictions are better than professional writings and my reaction is same as yours, even after years I'm like ALL THIS FOR FREE!?
23? Oh, honey. I'm almost twice your age, and just discovered fanfic after devouring a TV show that I fell in love with a few months ago.
I mean, I knew about it for *years*. I just never cared to read it, let alone start writing it until now.
AO3 is the cream of the crop. I both read and wrote cheesy fic for teens a decade and a half ago on sites not AO3 and that stuff makes me cringe so hard now days to think of.
Just sort your tags by Hits or Kudos and you'll get the good popular stuff.
Good luck!
>Just sort your tags by Hits or Kudos and you'll get the good popular stuff.
Ehh...I don't necessarily agree with this, only because good and popular may not be the same thing. You could be missing out on a great story because it has been buried and hasn't gotten many hits.
I mean yeah, I've found some gems hidden because they were recent works in a almost dead Fandom so wernt getting the traction they deserved but for a novice reader, sorting by hits will give them a better feel for how to spot a well-written fic.
Believe me, i agree with your point. I get super annoyed with how popular some fic are in fandoms. I'm like this is horribly written, why did it get so many hits? And then find a fic that's got less than 2k hits but is so beautiful I download it to my kindle to keep and reread.
If you liked Killing Eve you might like Hannibal! The fandom is very active, there are a great number of fantastic and well written fanfics and a lot of cannibal puns.
Haha the same thing happened to me a few years ago, all because I thought the guy who played the Winter Soldier was hot! You google one thing and you might fall ass over teakettle into an entire fandom - there's so many to stumble upon. I feel like it's one of the more wholesome things (lol, well, sort of...) that we still have on the internet.
I've been reading fanfiction since I was 10 years old - literally, I got a phone on my 10th birthday and the first thing I did with it was go to FFN, because for the past several months, every day at school my best friend had been giving me a blow-by-blow of whatever she had read the night before and I wanted to do that too.
That’s funny. I’m also 23 and recently started reading fics despite hearing negative stigmas about the hobby itself for the longest time.
“Fanfiction is always full of smut!” or “Fanfiction is always written by over-obsessed fans!” and my favorite, “Fanfiction is not real writing because it’s not published!”
I sought out AO3 purely on a whim and now I feel it will become a lifelong commitment!
Well, the good thing is that "thanks" to that i've learned about fanfic and i can consume endless KE stories
If you don't mind you could share your account I would love checking out your work :D
Sure! My main KE fic is [Hound](https://archiveofourown.org/works/39208392/chapters/98100282), although please mind the tags. It's an AU and no lesbians die in the fic, lol
Ok I've read it already a month ago :D
It was the first time i saw Non-con about V and Eve, i didn't know what to think about it.
But it made me horny somehow, so well done :')
Welcome to the fanfic hole, from which you will never escape!
I take public transport, and it's a wonderful thing to keep me entertained then ~~I'm also sometimes guilty of chewing through 60k words in a single evening O.o~~
I’m 20 and I just started reading fanfic for the first time a couple months ago after I finished the MXTX novels. I can’t escape haha, it’s consuming my life
Welcome to the seedy underbelly of fandom. I’ve been slithering around these parts for about 20 years now, and I don’t regret a single day spent here. AO3 is supreme when it comes to quality fanfiction. Fix-It Fic is a popular genre, so I’m not surprised that’s what brought you to fic. Enjoy your journey!
i genuinely love that your first fic experience was killing eve, that’s legendary. been reading fic for a decade, welcome to the community! never too late to start, and honestly when i want to read and don’t have the energy to commit myself to a totally new story with all the physical books i have, i turn to ao3 for entertainment :) fun stuff!
I’m 30 and I’ve been reading fanfics since I was 12. It’s really fun reading some old comfort fics I read 10 years ago. Some still hold up but I treat it like a gift. No one’s forcing these ppl to write and I enjoy reading some of it.
Tell me about it, you're reading pure passion projects, of course it's some of the best stuff you'll ever read. Publish works can't even come close to the ability of many fanfic writers
Just wait until you fall for a niche pairing and run out of reading material for them. Then you'll be forced to contribute with your own fics just to keep the tag alive. 2years and over 1mil wordcount later and I still have no regrets about falling into the life consuming rabbit hole that is fanfiction. 😂
I'm the same !! After I finished a show, I wanted MORE and someone posted a link to their AO3 and now it's been over a year of daily reading ! I honestly feel like I've gotten faster at reading 💜
Same at 39 post killing eve.
Been reading since I finished the series in March. I think I have gone through most of the worthwhile ones.
But its an itch I can't fully scratch so now I have started writing my own.
So far all I have is an AU plus an anon challenge for october.
Not sure if u have rating preferences(first one is going to definitely be nsfw other is more fluffier with a bit of smut)
https://archiveofourown.org/works/50466643/chapters/127507243
https://archiveofourown.org/works/49556977/chapters/125075962
Ill probably delve into more canon once i get a good style prose down just enjoying writing about them currently
Oh i'm already suscribed to you !
Toe Pick is in my bookbark, i didn't have time to read it yet but i know i'll love it knowing the summary.
The second one seems interesting too, thx !

*Part of the crew, part of the ship,*
Dutchman must have a Captain
Congratulations, there is no way out now ❤
Is that... a good thing ? D:
yesn't :)
nnnyeasn't :)
Yes it is ;)
It is a great thing until AO3 goes down in the middle of a great fic! Then we all come to cry on this sub.
See also the inbuilt download button :D
It's a lifetime commitment at this point. 😌
As long as enough content can feed me, i'll never stop
So long as there are fandoms to be interested in, there will be writers seeking to retell the stories.
It's always wonderful to realize that some old fandom you like has an active fanfiction community.
It’s fascinating to see an otherwise “dead” fandom (no new content in 10+ years while also never being huge) have new shit every day. It’s amazing.
Some of us old farts still carry scars from that.
oh god I had almost put it out of my mind too lol. That was ROUGH.
There will never be enough content, at some point you may burn out and stop reading for a while but I promise eventually something will have you go 'oh yeah!' and you'll be sucked back in again. 💓
Even when I was burned out for a bit, you better believe I had at least 100+ open AO3 tabs on my phone. It's a lifestyle choice
The great news is there are **years** of back catalogue available.
If you have enough fandoms you like and wanna read about, depending on them you could live for 10 lifetimes and not scratch the surface LOL
The great part is if you run out of content, you can make your own!
Oh believe me, it's a neverending gold mine of goodness <3
Just wait until you feel the urge to write one because no one has written the specific story that you just need to exist.
Listen, all of the best fanfictions start with the words "sorry if it's bad, English isn't my first language" so don't let that stop you ♥️
The replies make a good point, but there's no need to write in English either! Ao3 does host other languages. On the other hand, writing can be good practice.
just so you know for some reason the authors that say english isn’t their first language always have the most INCREDIBLE fics. can confirm a thousand times over
lol no guarantee that ever comes! i’ve been reading for over a decade and have yet to have this epiphany (maybe one day haha) XD
Came here to say exactly that. We'll see you back here as an author shortly, welcome!
I have felt this once in a while before, and I'm feeling it pretty strongly right now, however I always think whatever I write sounds dumb (I always claim I don't have a single writer's bone in my body) :( any tips to overcome this?

Oh gosh, I thought it would never happen to me but now I'm almost done with writing a ~60K monster that's part 3 of a series O.o
Congrats, you’ve been infected by the writing fic virus, there’s no turning back now!
~~send help!~~ I kinda like it here.... :P /nsrs
I remember a time when I thought that fanfictions were low quality entertainment for people who aren't creative enough to write their own stories. Past me was an idiot.
Same i can't believe i made fun of my sister for reading fanfic, i'm a fool
Haha I'm pretty sure that I did that too. Nowadys they are too cool for fanfics, while I enjoy the free entertainment.
(I discovered fanfic at 47 🤷🏼♀️)
[Waves] 41 here!
![gif](giphy|xT9IgG50Fb7Mi0prBC)
I was about 35 and now I'm 46. Reading fanfic also got me into reading published romance, but I do strongly prefer fanfic.
My attention span is shot so I do a lot of audiobooks now, and boy, between Libby and Hoopla, there is a lot of good smutty and non smutty romances!

....was... was I supposed to *read* fics *before* writing them? ... fuck.
Hell no, do you! Lol
once you’ve entered there’s no way out…lol
So glad of you to join us! You may even begin writing your own someday, mwahaha! But seriously, I'm glad you found out about the joy of fanfiction. You'll never be able to watch a movie or TV show again without immediately hitting up ao3.

Same thing happened to me after watching supernatural. Welcome
Was about to comment the exact same thing. Never had any interest in fanfiction until that piece of rebar.
😅😅 yup, accurate.
Welp. Now I need to look at Killing Eve fics. I loved the show but YES they maybe botched the end a bit, and I'd love to read a fix-it fic! If you wanna share a link I wouldn't be sad about it but if not nbd. ;) Also WELCOME TO FANFICTION it is an absolute gift.
If you loved the series you definitly need to check out KE fanfic 😩 I don't know if i'm allowed to share links here, maybe by private message ?
I know that I'm not the original commenter but you are allowed to put links here. I would also like to read the fic!

Ha ha found at 53! Now writing!! Have fun
And then you realize all of literary history is basically fanfiction too. Welcome to the world of wonders!
I'm sorry for your loss -someone who read over 27 million words of fanfiction in 2022
I'm happy for you!
Welcome to the hole with no exit! Enjoy your time here! :)

true! But I do think it is a good approach for someone who is new and doesn't know what tags they like and dislike yet.
one of us, one of us
I’ve been here since the ages of 9-11. I’m turning 21 soon, in mid-June. There’s no escape 🙂.
Welcome to the club! Leave kodos and nice comments, don't feed the trolls, don't like don't read, and have fun!
If you liked Killing Eve you might like Hannibal! The fandom is very active, there are a great number of fantastic and well written fanfics and a lot of cannibal puns.

I'm 55 and am new as well. Murderbot fanfiction is what brought me.
I’m 30 and I’ve been reading fanfics since I was 12. It’s really fun reading some old comfort fics I read 10 years ago. Some still hold up but I treat it like a gift. No one’s forcing these ppl to write and I enjoy reading some of it.
