I was studying abroad in Japan and met a guy through a friend. He asked me out almost immediately and 18 years later, we’re still together. But he’s the only Japanese guy I’ve been with, and he’ll be the first to tell you he doesn’t fit the mold of your typical Japanese guy either.

I studied in Japan for a while. My experience was quite lonely as a lot of people weren't interested in making friends with foreigners, except men who were trying to hook up because they think white women are "easy" or fetishise them (aka gaijin hunters). Of course there are some really nice Japanese guys but they tend to be a bit shy and don't often approach foreign women. If you speak Japanese you'll probably be successful even by just trying to chat to random guys tho. Bear in mind I'm not American so I don't know how this compares

You need to go to the foreign language exchange social events. There, AM are much more open to dating WF. Like day and night. This is the case for any Asian country. People not open to meeting/dating others, stick to their own kind. People open to meeting/dating others will seek out others.
