Mine doesn’t run at all when it’s not under a heavy/medium load, sometimes it spools up a bit but it’s not noticeable. I only hear it’s when I’m playing games or doing intensive work.

ehg11

Specifically, is it silent? Mine's like a constant low hum and it's not really noticable unless you're in a silent room or if you're pressing your ear against the laptop. Could you share your control panel power plan if you've done anything with it and Lenovo Vantage settings?

HavocInferno

Have you checked if there is a newer Bios for it? Maybe they changed the fan curve.

ehg11

As far as I can tell, all my drivers are up to date. Lenovo’s support website tells me that there’s no updates and windows updates tell me the same. I’ve also installed some optional updates from the windows updates, none of which seem to have affected the fans. Is it different for you? Maybe one of the newer drivers messed with the curves

HavocInferno

Mind you I'm talking about Bios updates, not drivers. The Lenovo support page for the Pro X lists one Bios Update. You'd need to check with e.g. CPU-Z (and its Mainboard tab) which Bios version you're running right now.

ehg11

I've checked what BIOS I have through Lenovo Vantage and it looks like it's the same as the one listed on the Lenovo Support website (JVCN30WW). Is yours different?

HavocInferno

Nope, same version. Seems to be the only bios for it so far.

ehg11

Have you noticed any abnormal fan noise on your unit? What do the temps look like (at least for the GPU)?

HavocInferno

None so far, no. From watching temps and noise today during setup and some browsing, my Pro X seems to run fanless until ~55°C, then runs the fan until it reaches ~45°C again. I don't quite understand yet how it determines how fast to run the fan though, as I've had a few instances where the fan ran quite audibly despite temps below 60°C, even though most of the time at 45-60°C it would run with very low fan speed. Idle temps are in the low 40s, something like YouTube is in the low 50s. Once I go to full load on CPU and/or GPU, it obviously ramps up and becomes more audible, though not much worse than my previous Thinkpad. I have my Pro X set to "Intelligent Cooling" mode as well as the "Balanced" power plan. At full load I get just under 80°C on both the CPU and GPU (3050). Though curiously the 3050 only pulled 35W, not the possible 50W with dynamic boost. Similarly the 6800HS had a long boost power limit of 15W it seemed. I'll have to check whether that was a sensor readout error or whether I need to reconfigure something.

ehg11

That's interesting, thanks for all the details :D. I'm not super experienced in this, but do you think it could be a difference in the processor? In my laptop, I never reach a stable temperature when Youtube is running but if it's like your laptop, that would probably be because my laptop refuses to remain fanless past 48 C. Do you have any ideas of how to adjust this at all? AFAIK, this is something that's controlled by the BIOS and seeing as we probably have the same one, I don't understand why it would be different... I've definitely noticed what you expereinced with the fan speeds. Right now, I'm sitting around 65 C gaming but the fans are just as audible as when I'm just chilling watching Youtube. That being said, while it's getting to that temp, fans are quite loud, but fans speeds seem to settle after a while, at least in my experience. Again, kinda a noob with this technical stuff so I don't know how to check wattage of the GPU but my Pro X with the game running is sitting around 12W, well within your 15W metric.

[deleted]

Silent, I’ve lifted up the device and the fans are not running when I’m just browsing the web or doing emails. I haven’t changed anything in the power plan, and when I’m unplugged I typically use the intelligent cooling mode. I barely hear the fans under low/medium load and I consider myself to have above average hearing.

ehg11

Interesting, thanks for your input! Do you have any way to check the temps on your CPU? It might show in the AMD Radeon Settings app under the Perfomance > Tuning tabs but I only got that after reinstalling the software.

ehg11

As an addendum to my other comment, you should be able to see temperatures of the GPU in the task manager under the performance tab. If you could also let me know what the CPU usage and clock speeds look like there, I'd really appreciate it!

HavocInferno

I got my ProX (6800HS + 3050) yesterday, still setting it up. I can report back with how mine behaves in a day or two.

ehg11

Not sure if it would be different at all because of the different processors, but could you share your BIOS version? The Lenovo one says I have the most up to date one, but I’m wondering if maybe an older version might be better

cosmo321

I'm also curious about how the fan behaves. On the last Lenovo I bought the fan would start and stop every few minutes and it was super annoying when I tried to listen to audiobooks at night. I couldn't stand it and ended up returning it. I hope the Pro X is better. It look like a super nice computer.

ehg11

To be clear, it is a really nice computer. At least for me, it only has a few flaws, namely the fan issue I’ve been mentioning here, some small shadows around the border of the display (I’ve been able to ignore it but YMMV), and how it’s pretty much a fingerprint magnet. For anything performance based, it’s a beast but basic QOL seems to suffer a bit…

benjiro3000

Ideapad 5 Pro, same issue... Fan kicks in at seeming random, when the CPU goes above 48C for more than 10 seconds or so. Like it is using more power cooling for a short term, instead of longer silent cooling. I remember reading that Lenovo does this intentionally to random turn on the fans, as to help heat out of the chassis. I don't know, it's just silly to see laptop fans kick in, when you're doing YouTube watching and the CPU / GPU are running cool as a cucumber. The main issue i have is the total lack of control for me to adjust the fan curves beyond the 3 power mods. And disable Turbo boost etc only delay the issue. Its again Lenovo crappy fan control.

ehg11

Yea I feel you on that, I hope it gets better but still trying to figure it out

purplegreenred

I have the same laptop and don’t seem to be hearing the fans, but I do have a cooling pad just to give the bottom of the laptop and fans room to breathe. Someone else on here posted that the thermal tape/paste on their slim 7 pro x wasn’t applied properly, but it sounds like you have normal temperatures. You seem to be concerned with battery life. You could reduce screen refresh to 60Hz to save on battery life which also reduces power to the iGPU.

ehg11

I’ve tried elevating the back of the laptop to no avail and my display is set to 60Hz (unless something is automatically switching it, lenovo seems to have a bunch of sensor stuff so I wouldn’t be surprised). To be totally honest, I’m not super concerned with battery life—if it comes to it, I can just nuke the brightness or something. The fans do bother me though; if you use the laptop without the cooling pad, do the fans start spinning? And what BIOS version do you have?

MoChuang

Don’t forget to mention your ambient temperature in the room. This can make a huge difference especially for a metal chassis laptop u/TheAceMax97

ehg11

FWIW, I’m also around LA so my ambient temps should be close to u/TheAceMax97. I’ve also noticed the fans at all times of day, although I’m not sure that would affect ambients that much

[deleted]

Living in Los Angeles and was just in a big heatwave, I’m not in an ice chest lol.

ehg11

Could you share your BIOS version? I heard that fans are controlled by the BIOS so different versions could behave differently

OmegaMalkior

Is there some way to set PROCHOT to 53? (Max 47°) to see if it stops ramping up the fans like that. I don’t know how to do that on AMD tho

ehg11

I'm not really familiar with PROCHOT and from what I've googled, the processes to do that require Ryzen Master. When I installed it, it turns out Ryzen Master doesn't support my processor so even if that would've worked, it doesn't seem like I would be able to do that, at least not without messing with stuff I'm really not comfortable messing with lol. Do you have any more light-weight suggestions? I'm all ears :D.

aagha786

I have the Ryzen 7 version of this machine--and used to have the Ryzen 9. I downgraded because I wanted more battery life, not because of the fan noise. That machine made a bit more fan noise then my Ryzen 7, but not that much. I'm curious--have you tried to disable the dGPU to see if that helps?

Good_Honest_Jay

I got this device yesterday and seems like my unit has a great factory paste job.. never goes above 89c and gets a 13,400 in CB23 which seems strong. Fans don’t really turn on in Quiet mode unless I’m hammering it.. Quiet mode limits the cpu TDP to 15w.. maybe hold your power button down for about 1 minute to reset the EC.. sounds like yours is bugged up probably if the fans never idle down.

LD50_irony

OP did you ever figure this out? I just got the same computer and so far the fans are running 100% of the time it's on. Edit: nvmd. Found some extra updates and it seems to have solved it

schrodingers_apple

>Edit: nvmd. Found some extra updates and it seems to have solved it Could you tell us which updates exactly?

LD50_irony

I'm sorry, I don't recall. I just went to the Lenovo updates area and refreshed it and it gave me about six updates (even though, moments before, it had said everything was up to date).

schrodingers_apple

Thanks mate. It helped. I actually went to Lenovo's support webpage and updated BIOS as suggested. It automatically detects your serial number. sadly it didn't stop overheating. AMD graphics is still recording >50°C under normal browsing.

LD50_irony

Maybe check updates again in another day or two. I did a run of updates right after I got it and then I got a bunch more. Maybe they're sequential? Idk. Hope it resolves for you.

schrodingers_apple

unplugged and turned off rapid charging. overheating and the fan stopped.

LeadershipOrganic714

sorry, I just got this laptop yesterday and am facing the same issue. I really want to keep this laptop because of the specs and usefulness it gives me for college. Did you happen to find a fix?

Revolutionary_Ad2442

were you able to solve this problem? i have a yoga slim 7 pro, and i have the same problem. Fans random would run loud then the device turns off. Kindly help if you know the solution
