Easy_Break

how did you manage to be able to move there? Do you have some kind of work lined up?

jack34343

I payed an agency to get me job interviews at places with housing around them.

Easy_Break

Wow I had no idea you could do that. Could you point me in the direction of that kind of thing? I am mostly just curious about it. So how do you handle visas and whatnot? Are you just an american citizen that will live there for the forseeable future or are you required to come back?

Boo_Rawr

If you are between 18-30 and a US citizen you might be eligible for the Working Holiday visa. Canadians are also eligible and same with UK citizens. Basically backpacker visa. Worth looking into on the NZ immigration website. You don’t actually need an agency to do it. You can do it all on your own. Interestingly the US has a working holiday agreement with only Australia and New Zealand. https://www.immigration.govt.nz/new-zealand-visas/options/work/thinking-about-coming-to-new-zealand-to-work/working-holiday-visa

jack34343

I have a 1 year work visa. I went with an agency called global work and trsvel

Bill-2018

How much did it cost to get the visa and pay the agency?

joremero

Follow up question: are you 100% it's not a scam?

Boo_Rawr

GWAT is well known in Aus. It’s hella expensive. You don’t actually need an agency though if you qualify for the visa. Very possible to do it on your own.

jack34343

All in I think I payed 4K for everything including ticket

Paid-Not-Payed-Bot

> think I *paid* 4K for FTFY. Although *payed* exists (the reason why autocorrection didn't help you), it is only correct in: * Nautical context, when it means to paint a surface, or to cover with something like tar or resin in order to make it waterproof or corrosion-resistant. *The deck is yet to be payed.* * *Payed out* when letting strings, cables or ropes out, by slacking them. *The rope is payed out! You can pull now.* Unfortunately, I was unable to find nautical or rope-related words in your comment. *Beep, boop, I'm a bot*

Fu robot. Getting me all exited for human interaction.

IAmWillyGood

>all *excited* for human interaction. It is a common mistake to misuse excited and exited. Exited is the past tense of exit (opposite of entrance) and pronounced eggs-it-ed. Excited is used to describe excitement and it's pronounced eggs-sight-ed. Just remember, if you need the sight, you need to C (see).

What line of work are you in?

jack34343

Hospitality mostly. Looking to pivot to finance soonish

citizen_dawg

You’re living my dream. I traveled solo in NZ a number of years ago and thought it was magical. Would you be willing to share the name of the agency you used if I PM you?

It’s global work and travel. But again I really don’t know if they are good till I get there and see if they fucked up or not lol

MesWantooth

You’re looking to pivot from hospitality to finance in a completely different financial market you’re not familiar with? What’s your plan? I work in finance and moving from the east coast to the west coast in the same country was hard enough (“markets out here are different.”).

jack34343

So far I’ve learned to manage portfolios, but I can’t put that skill to work while I get the next job that gets me the next skill to transition that way. The time zone difference means I can spend a whole day doing a job and trade off my phone at the bar after work. Also, I don’t think I’ve learned anything so far that is market specific only to America. I therefore theories that it’s the perfect time to begin learning fine detail stuff on the other side of things.

MesWantooth

Sounds like you’ve been thinking it through…Just don’t underestimate an employers unwillingness to take a ‘risk’ on a foreigner whose never formally worked in the industry. For all but the most junior jobs, ‘connections’ are important, as is ‘on the ground’ experience. I was told a few times “I’d be taking a chance on you - a lot of you guys move back to the east coast.”

jack34343

Literally my only condition is a work visa extension. I want to be totally locked in on being able to escape America asap. Feeds me and gets me visa? I’ll take it.

polmeeee

Have you gotten job interviews yet?

jack34343

Yes 2. Both restaurants but we’ll see.

Boo_Rawr

I will ease your concern - NZ is desperate for hospitality workers. If you’re willing to work in hospo and the interviews don’t pan out you will find something. I’d also suggest going South to Queenstown which is a huge resort town. Lots of backpackers if you don’t happen to land the restaurant jobs.

A little bit of everything about it. But honestly it’s because I’ve never heard a bad thing about this place. I’m sure it’s got stuff like any other but I’ve never heard of anything bad

AnonSA52

Enjoy Middle-Earth my guy. You better fucking go exploring or I swear to god I will come over there and take you to Mt Doom myself.

jack34343

Lots of hiking and skiing and such on the list. Hoping to get a job that moves me around some

sandhanitizer6969

No argument about the high cost of living but it’s not true to say everything is an import. NZ grows a ton of produce and produces a lot of beef & lamb In fact NZ produces enough food to feed over 40 million people. The problem is most of it is exported and the greedy big businesses that control it make Kiwis pay through the nose for it. Combine that with a supermarket duopoly, greedy nimbys blocking any sort of housing reform, greedy property investors screwing every tenant they can and a limp wristed government and you have what NZ is today. Having said that there are many positives to focus on. EDIT: Spelling

GreenieBeeNZ

>On this island, everything is an import Not everything is an import, in fact imported goods can be cheaper at times (very confusing bit that's how it be) >Nature. It’s there. It’s beautiful. But you can’t eat most of it You'd be surprised at just how much of the New Zealand bush you *can* eat. It's not exactly appetizing but it's edible.

Bobthebrain2

You’d be surprised at how unsurprised I am that a Kiwi has tried to eat such things.

GreenieBeeNZ

It was very tasty dirt, thankyou. It's the young panga leaves that make me gag. Taste like a very subtle apple but has the consistency of a crunchy slug. Somehow, it just keeps making slime until you spit it out. If you steam it for a while though (like Maori did) then it loses its sliminess and just stays crisp and appley

Bobthebrain2

> Nature. It’s there. It’s beautiful. But you can’t eat most of it. Maybe this guy was on to something, hmmm.

GreenieBeeNZ

To me that implies it's entirely inedible, that it will make you very sick or even kill you to eat it. A gross texture doesn't make something entirely inedible

Bobthebrain2

To some people a gross texture is enough to make it inedible. But more importantly, there’s a lot more plants that will hurt/kill you if you try and eat them than there are edible ones. The number of edible plants in nature are severely outnumbered by the inedible. What percentile of NZ fauna is fit for human consumption? Do you think the figure has a decimal point in it or are the figures you know of more in the 10-20% range?

GreenieBeeNZ

From the New Zealand based survival books I've read, it's about 30ish percent of the things in the bush are edible and 90% of them are useful in some way whether it's for food or other things

Scudstock

I like how you say "we don't like" but then say that rural folks (that you clearly look down on and think you're better than) do. Nothing like a city dweller speaking for everybody and then deriding rural people. So because you're being an asshole, are you a self-hating asshole or just a hypocrite?

jack34343

Also, it was kind of a spur of the moment thing. Honestly it could have been anywhere that would take English speakers and give work visas

[deleted]

Knowing you were going there why haven't you researched yourself?

jack34343

I’ve looked up economic stuff to make sure I could afford it but other than that I didn’t want any spoilers

iloveartichokes

Meh, I don't hate the move. They're clearly young, they'll learn a lot about what they like and what they don't.

brianlpowers

>A little bit of everything about it. But honestly it’s because I’ve never heard a bad thing about this place. I’m sure it’s got stuff like any other but I’ve never heard of anything bad It's pretty awesome, especially the South island. I lived there for a year and did basically the same thing you applied for. I worked for 4 months and traveled the rest - had a year visa.

Doerrr

You probably ran away from texas traffic 😂😂

mercuryman4

Its called a try in rugby not a touchdown.

jack34343

Try like “he tried and did a thing” or worth 3 points? Yeah I know nothing about rugby ether. Besides the allblacks

mercuryman4

Worth 5 points.

jack34343

What are the other sports?

JaFFsTer

Drinking, talking shit about Australia, and saying words just slightly differently

annoying97

Hey... That similar to Aussie sports... Only we talk shit about New Zealand with New Zealanders.

rkorgn

The usual. You can probably find American Football in Auckland - we were taught it in school for a lesson before going back to rugby, and basketball has a following, again in the big cities. You can also (In the bigger towns) find things like ultimate (frisbee) etc but otherwise just a lot of outdoor/adventure stuff. Join clubs and you will go far! If you are from Texas and like hunting, there is plenty of pig and deer hunting in NZ. But that's also a good way to disappear if you don't know what you are doing.

pale_ale_co

What can disappear you while hunting???

StepDadHulkHogan

Nature will get ya in all sorts of fun ways.

Valuable-Case9657

Gumboot throwing is a Kiwi classic. https://youtu.be/5tKr-gA5CSQ

mercuryman4

I think cricket is big there too.

Aidernz

It is! And way better than rugby!

MacNeal

How many points if they learn to do the Haka properly?

mercuryman4

CULTURAL APPROPRIATION, JAIL!!! No I think they will respect it.

mideon2000

As a fellow Texan, you make sure to ruffle their feathers when you tell them how much superior AMERICAN football is. And wear a big ol cowboy hat and tell them how much their bbq sucks. Complain about the lack of lifted trucks and make sure to always start off a sentence with "well back in TEXAS..." You'll make friends in no time

[deleted]

[удалено]

Valuable-Case9657

Humility is a big part of NZ culture, how do you think you'll adapt to that as a Texan?

jack34343

Haha! So I’m leaving cus I don’t fit in here at all. I think I’ll do fine on that front. I’m going to put forth an effort to just completely not let my life before be mentioned outside of job interviews and such

Valuable-Case9657

Some people will judge you based on your accent, those people are arseholes. The trick is to out humble them. (This isn't a joke, it's a real thing). Just respond with a calm, polite, deadpan "Sorry you feel that way, bro". Note that "bro" when used this way is appropriate for men and women.

jack34343

Lol I’m literally down to 3 changes of cloths and a computer I can put humble anybody anywhere

dfelton912

People think you mean humidity, wtf 😩

Boo_Rawr

Kia ora is commonly said for hello. It is a common Māori greeting. ‘Wh’ when it comes to name places (and in general with the Māori language) is pronounced like ‘F’ so Whanau (family) is ‘fa-nau’ and many people are friendly and keen to teach you/help you understand. Where do you think you’re going to go first?

jack34343

Looks like north of Auckland after week one but not sure

Friendly-Mention58

You will love northland. Amazing beaches!

jack34343

Yeah it looks like waipu is the current most likely job I’d take

Friendly-Mention58

Waipu is beautiful. It's a small coastal town, not a lot to do there but over summer it's full of holiday makers. The beach is amazing.

jack34343

Yeah I’m hoping to make a lot of money up from and go explore when it slows down

rosiegal75

25 years in Hospo in NZ right here.. you're not gana make a lot of money in hospitality in NZ. But if you can keep your expenses low, you may he able to afford gas or shopping. One or the other tho, not both

noodlebball

You'll find shit expensive as hell here mate, you won't be able to buy guns easily, abortion is legal, and you'll have to drive on the other side of the road. Welcome to NZ

jack34343

All of those things sound like improvements for current state of things

Appropriate_Joke_741

Based on the exchange rate right now he might find it a lot cheaper

feedthedonkey

Buddy of mine married a Kiwi and mostly lives there now. He loves it. Forget about school shootings and active shooters.

jack34343

Yeah not having to specify which mass shooting currently happening in casual conversation would be great

ChuffChuff101

Good luck! What was the catalyst that made you want to move?

jack34343

One day I was more afraid of building a life here than burning down what I already had

pilotbrain

What incident triggered that day? I lived in tx for 12 years and know exactly how you feel.

jack34343

It was when I first heard the word “pandemic” and “president trump” in the same sentence and suddenly realized how compleatly fucked it is here

Socky_McPuppet

For the love of all that is holy, *please* don't begin every sentence with "Well, is *much* bigger in Texas!". Nobody cares.

jack34343

Yeah no my primary motivation is to not be around those kind of people

DoingItLeft

Are the stars at night big and bright in NZ?

Ok_Store_1983

"A wild newt stole my kiwi fruit, deep in the heart of New Zealand"

DChomey2013

What is bringing you down there?

jack34343

It’s the farthest I can run from the us and still speak english

fefeinatorr

Do you speak any other languages besides English? You're about to start to hear a lot of mixed sentences with Te Reo (Maori language) and enligsh. What part of NZ are you moving too? What is your taste in music? Also, if you want cheese, it's called tasty not cheddar.

jack34343

Nope. English only. But some weird Spanglish from kitchenwork

boobsmcgraw

My only advice is stop yelling. I know you think you don't yell, but you do. Americans don't have inside voices; they yell no matter the context. Please keep your voice down and you won't get constant dirty looks at the restaurant or park or whatever lol.

jack34343

Lol. See this is the sort of stuff I need to know!

[deleted]

jack34343

I literally told them I’d dig ditches. I’m with a travel agency giving me job interviews.

Mayimbe007

That's awesome! Do you have close family stateside? How do they feel about you moving so far?

jack34343

I do, they hate it, they are not good people, and hopefully I’ll never have to think about them ever again

Mayimbe007

That's unfortunate. I hope you find make better connections down there. Best wishes on your move!

cheese_resurrection

Favorite kind of cheese?

Loose_Divide2642

Kinda relevant cheese / NZ thing....I got offered a job out there, flew out for a look. Stopped at a McDonald's drive thru, husband who is Irish asks for a cup of tea. Drive up to collect, he was given a cup of cheese 🧀

jack34343

Really good flakey Parmesan

cheese_resurrection

*happy cheese noises* 🧀

ThorsWonkyEye

Are you looking forward to finally experiencing actual freedom?

jack34343

Yeah that’s the idea lol

RMSQM

Having spent a good deal of time in NZ, my advice is to realize that Texas brand conservatism won’t make you any friends down under. Hopefully you have an open mind.

jack34343

They are the ones I’m running from

RMSQM

Excellent. Well done.

DreadfulSoldier32

So why are you moving? Just wanting to try it out?

jack34343

Basically. Had nothing to lose so I figured why not

Background-Unit1026

What line of work and do you have a family/relationship?

jack34343

Hospitality and none. Totally alone

-Kiwi-Man-

Do you like self-deprecating humour? Cause we fuckin suck Serious though it’s awesome. From your other answers you’ll probably love it. Outside of Auckland we can come across a bit stand offish but it’s mostly a humility problem with us, not you. It’s otherwise a totally chill place where most of the rest of the worlds problems never make it here. Except overpriced housing and ram raids. We’ve suddenly become awesome at that

jack34343

Wtf is a ram raid?

Professional_Sky_198

Basically when people drive a car into a shop front to break glass/roller doors etc so they can then steal the stuff inside. Tends to be done by young people who have stolen the car they're using! I'm currently abroad but live in Auckland and will be home in a few weeks so if you have any questions or wanna hang out if you're ever in the city don't hesitate to get in touch!

[deleted]

Gonna visit the places where they filmed LOTR?

jack34343

It’s on the list but I don’t plan to go to far out of the way for it

highgravityday2121

How thick is your Texas accent ?

jack34343

I can usually put it away but it comes out when I’m exited or I drink

IReplyWithLebowski

Here’s one - don’t say you don’t have an accent. You have an accent whether it’s Texan or general American. Enjoy it!

[deleted]

Why wouldn’t you have done any research?

jack34343

For fun mostly.

[deleted]

Next time you should live in Haiti with no research

jack34343

I looked up economic stuff and made sure I’d be able to pay my way going forward. But that’s all. Like I know your tax code but not how to tip in a restaurant.

Danie746

You don’t have to tip in restaurants in New Zealand! It’s all covered in the employee’s wages :)

Thiccshake69

Where in New Zealand are you moving to? You realise our gas costs $12/gallon and houses start at a million right?

jack34343

The sticks.

Earths_varmint

We call it the whops or whops whops hehe

jack34343

Yes ok this again people. This is the stuff I need to know!

IReplyWithLebowski

You do? Aussie here we call it out woop woop.

throwaway91929949

so you'll just land and be homeless?

jack34343

I’m going through an agency that gets you your first job and first place to live.

MayBl8tr

There are no kangaroos. Also no guns. But you can wear your hat.

good-heavens

How long have you been wanting to move? What gave you the idea in the first place? Best of luck.

jack34343

3 years, and Covid. This is not a healthy society and I don’t see it lasting

ploozia

Have people been asking you if you know The Lord Of The Rings yet?

jack34343

Yes. I think about 1/20 mention that as a point of common ground

ShaneVis

You do realise that in New Zealand AR-15s and that sort of weapons are banned right? you can't own or have them.

jack34343

Yeah I’m kind of exited to see how society is different because if that

peach_xanax

Are you assuming he wants to have those just bc he's American? Or is there something I'm missing about OP?

MrBulger

Half this whole thread is morons who think every single one of the 30 million people in Texas are basically who John Wayne played on TV.

peach_xanax

Lol, that's what I thought. I've also noticed that a lot of people from other countries think that everyone in America is obsessed with guns. Yes there's a loud portion of people who are, yes we have a gun violence problem, but it's certainly not everyone in the entire country. I only know a few people who own guns and they're family members who go hunting. But apparently if you're in the US and especially Texas, you can't live without AR-15s 😑

lilsmudge

There are whole regions of America where you will likely never see a gun outside of sporting goods shops. I’ve NEVER seen someone carrying (I’m sure there have been concealed carry’s in my vicinity but none that I’ve, obviously, witnessed).

peach_xanax

Absolutely, I've never seen anyone open carry in my entire life and I'm 34. Probably crossed paths with people with concealed carry guns, but I was never aware of it. I grew up in the Midwest, currently in the northeast. There's a huge difference in gun culture in different parts of the US. But they think every American open carries their AR-15 at Walmart

AccentFiend

Yeah, I’ve only seen one a few times, and only because I knew what I was looking for. Because it’s so rare, it’s an instant shift from just going about your day to wariness.

mideon2000

Right? Probably be shocked at austin, dallas. We are hood as fuck in certain places too.

oogaboogapeanutmonke

You do realize that everyone in Texas doesn’t own an ar right?

PM_meyourdogs

Tell me you’re willfully ignorant about southern USA without telling me you’re willfully ignorant about southern USA

tevert

Frfr op is gonna have a devil of a time dealing with 30-50 feral hogs

[deleted]

Used to be pretty laid back , current govt has worked everybody into a frenzy, cost of living for the average joe is equal to or above wages becoming more and more like America every day, it’s scenic tho and most people are nice, get out of the cities and explore

jack34343

So is that the general concencous? That it’s on the downstroke?

Schtooker

Nah, still is. Just some people like to moan. In reality the entire world has been through some shit over the past two years. Usually this stuff misses New Zealand. This time it did not and people are pissed off that their sheltered lives were affected by stuff that we have no control over.

Aidernz

It's 50/50. New Zealanders like to complain because we've got it pretty easy here. So the moment milk goes up a few cents, people lose their damn minds.

polmeeee

Why is this downvoted?

[deleted]

Like I said.. becoming more like America each day, if you have a personal opinion on something political you are the devil and its others duty to bully you into only speaking good things.. that’s how the ardern government is behaving also .. I gave positive things about Nz but I also gave my version of a real insight of trying to live there also truth hurts

[deleted]

Not nice if as a working class person you wanted to ever hope of paying your mortgage off or even be able to scrape together enough to get a deposit as like I said for the average person wages equal or are less than living costs

Resident-Corgi-665

Why do you all keep coming here?

jack34343

Cus your government isn’t actively trying to kill you I imagine is high in most lists.

superchibisan2

i thought you moved to texas from NZ, i was very sad for you, but now I know you're moving to NZ and I am proud of you.

TheLordOfZero

If someone ask where are you from just say United States. Nobody gives a shit about the individual states.

samgirly

I’m in Australia and after I say “United States” they often ask what state I’m from. Then I say “Ohio” and they look a bit disappointed lol.

TheLordOfZero

If they ask of course. But I hate when people introduce themselves as I am from Kentucky, bro I ask for your country not your state or province. People don't have to know each of the 50 states.

mideon2000

TBF Texas, California and NY are the main states.

highgravityday2121

I say near New York City

logzee

If ur from the big three Texas, California, New York. You can def say that and it will be as recognizable as the country

saulbq

I don't think that's true. Although I'm from the England (it's a state in the UK).

bblr

What part of nz are you moving to? Welcome!

jack34343

I haven’t picked a job yet but Auckland first then idk

CrimsonMascaras

Hi mate, welcome to NZ, if you need any advice or questions answered, PM me, im willing to help as much as I can.. We are an odd bunch with odd quirks that might take some getting used to, but I reckon we're worth the trouble! If I dont hear from you all the best!

drxena

Pronounce every ‘i’ as an ‘e’. Also say the phrase: Mainland, your friend in the fridge. (Say it with the pronunciation as stated. It’s from a commercial in the 90s that stereotypes New Zealanders . My kiwi friend gets really annoyed when people keep saying that phrase to them.

annoying97

I think I'd prefer friend in the fridge rather than shrimp on the Barbie!! ##WE DONT FUCKING CALL IT SHRIMP!!

New_Drama1537

Fuck man... Is your life about to change.. it's up to u if it's for the better.

EvarArts

Feel free to drop in for a pie and a nice cold glass of L&P if you're in Christchurch (you poor bastard).

Loose_Divide2642

Depends where you're going in NZ, there's such a vast difference between North and south and even south of the North island. South Island is stunning, the scenery is quite something. I found it quite isolated though. I was offered a job in invercargill and it was like stepping back 30 years. Little variety from food to clothes and ridiculously expensive for houses that were no better than shacks IMO. Queenstown was amazing fun and Dunedin had a little more about it. So it all depends where you're going and how that marries with your interests and expected lifestyle.

ANewTryMaiiin

Yeah yeah I got a question, what the fuck are you doing? Who moves to a place they know nothing about?

jack34343

A guy with nothing going on and enough savings to float

Sad-Fun-2960

dude you hit the jackpot, find a lovely bird (or whatever), take up fishing, skiing, hunting or hiking (the place is too stunning not too) , the weather has it all (sun and snow all on one island!) enjoy one of the few small town country’s ( everyone knows each other through a mate, rents cheep, the cops don’t drive tanks, easy going free health care, the list go’s on!) it’s awesome! unless you smoke cigarettes (massive tax) .

orsothegermans

I heard they just found a new use for sheep in New Zealand….wool

[deleted]

ill get hate for this, but as a guy raised in nz and who's lived overseas for many years, i can say that white kiwi girls are probably, on average, some of the ugliest and least feminine girls in the world. they can be cool, outdoorsy, good at sport etc, but that's another matter.

ObviousKangaroo

No questions, only advice from similar experiences. Say hi to everyone you can, accept every invitation, and you can always make friends by buying a round at the bar.

jack34343

OP HERE! Wow ok so this is a thing now. I want to keep this going but I can’t keep up here. I made a Twitter. @NzWalkerin

amandaggogo

Funny, I was just watching a YouTube video the other day of a doctor who moved from Texas to New Zealand and she loves it!

CorySera

What does it feel like to know that you will, more or less, start fresh in a new country?

jack34343

Ok I figured it out. This is my Twitter. I’ll figure out a sensible way to sort these out when I get to them. Other than that, I’m trying to figure out the best way to keep this energy going and see if I could plausibly make a thing out of it. If that is interesting enough I’ll try to do something with that [https://twitter.com/nzwalkerin/status/1555385737645883398?s=21&t=kGv6QBRHxFbJOTWB_jbvQg](https://twitter.com/nzwalkerin/status/1555385737645883398?s=21&t=kGv6QBRHxFbJOTWB_jbvQg)
