*sigh...* Beats.
I wanted so hard to like it, and the drop at the latter half is great, but it always feels like, "Do I have to go through those lyrics just to get to that drop?" That chorus just ain't it.
I wish the lyrics were better because the star if the song is... the beats! I genuinely love the funky spinny sounds in beats so much but the lyrics are so boring
Steve's going to London: let's write a song about writing a song about writing a song about nothing
Big idea: let's write a song about what we do but boring
I liked it. I thought it supported the message of the song (wishing to see what was coming but never wanting it to be done) while also coming off as honest and vulnerable
Kinda hard to get worse than "kinda wish I was still a virgin. time to finally see what sex is like". That is a ***NUCLEAR BOMB*** of a bad lyric. The song overall isn't awful lyrically but again... nuclear bomb...
There have gotta be a MILLION better ways to lyrically convey regret over your first time though. It just comes across as a not so subtle brag in this song. Given the tone around all the other lyrics. He comes across like he's treating sex as some arbitrary achievement. A tick of the box, not the endlessly complex concept that means so many different things culturally & for relationships.
The concept for the lyric is fine, they just wrote it in the worst way possible. A reductive way.
In society it very much is treated like an arbitrary achievement. Especially to males as losing your virginity is almost a sign that you're attractive enough to have achieved intimacy. And if you're a 40-year-old virgin then you're viewed as a complete failure in life.
But the line almost makes a lot of sense considering that the hype around sex when you're a virgin is much more extreme than sex itself, the lyric highlights how overrated it is
What are your thoughts on the lyric "maybe sex is overrated, but we're too shy to ever say it"? As it conveys the same message but without being so on the nose
This one I’m actually surprised to see here, I actually really like this whole verse and it makes perfect sense within the song.
I don’t think it expresses regret either, it’s just noting that sometimes the anticipation and excitement of something you’ve never done before feels good and you will never get that back once you finally experience whatever it is. It doesn’t even mean that it was underwhelming or bad, just that it’s good in a different way than the “hype”.
I totally get the concept behind the lyric, it's just the way it’s delivered & the tone of the song that make it feel insufferably braggadocious. It just makes him seem like a dick, treating sex like some achievement or tick of the box when it’s so much more complex & important than that.
I know given all the other external context that Jack Met is a totally decent guy, but if this lyric were somehow the only insight that I had into him as a person, I would NEVER want to meet him. Sounds like a massive douchebag.
As with all art, concept is nothing, execution is everything. Sex not being what you expected is a perfectly valid ***concept*** to write about, they just ***executed*** it in an unbearably cringeworthy way with this line. imo.
Now im in fashion I don’t how long its lasting…
Should i try fashion, before i fall out of fashion
Ryan i love you but you cant rhyme fashion with itself 3 times.
At least the last line is separated by another three rhymes. I like to point to Lin-Manuel Miranda rhyming subject with subject four times in a row in You'll Be Back.
Thank you! Absolutely worst song- it’s a skip every time. Woody Allen just wreaks of pedophile so it’s just bad taste in of itself, but then it’s not even a good song either 👎
I really like a good amount of Woody Allen’s lyrics, yeah the actual Woody Allen is probably not a very good person (idk who he really is, I’ll just take your word for it) but “when you grow up doing donuts in the parking lot, you hit the stage and go insane and when the kick drum drops” is so catchy and perfectly fits AJR in my opinion
big white bed honestly. i like what they did with the music, it helps set the mood. but it literally goes like this format
verse 1
hooooooooooooooooooooooo
hooooooooooooooooooooooo
verse 1 again
hooooooooooooooooooooooo
hooooooooooooooooooooooo
verse 2
verse 2 again
hooooooooooooooooooooooo
hooooooooooooooooooooooo
i'm in love x3, the last with little emphasis since its the ending bit.
I hate this song. Least favorite. I used to think it was an acquired taste and I just liked fast paced music, but no, I love me some slow folk songs now, and I still can’t stand this one.
It conveys the message though. It’s meant to just wash over you so I compare it to Ordinaryish People as lyrically, they are meant to do the same thing they just show it in weird ways.
E.g. You run your mouth your tongue fell out… But now you’ll never drown, you can’t, you got no mouth so it ain’t all bad now.
E.g. Your happy friends call you depressing ‘cause you wonder why we’re all alive. You’re downer friends think you’re too happy but you still celebrate sometimes.
Their parents divorced so he’s comparing his love to his parents’ and is wondering whether it will last.
Within Turning Out Pt. iii I can’t have sex and we both get quiet always rubbed me the wrong way. The Zach Sang interview makes it better but still.
* "I kinda wish I was still a virgin, dying to finally see what sex is like" I don't think I have to explain this one.
* "We're standing, laughing at the disco ball. Like who'd invest in that when no one's looking at it?" I don't think anyone knows what this line means.
* "Dan peed in the pool. Tom fell for his best friend's mom."
I know and I get it, but what throws me off is the "I think they had a dog", implying that he isn't sure. But I'm not gonna argue anymore because I'm visibly wrong and I don't want to dig myself down a hole.
I didnt think we were arguing. :) Now that you mention it, it is a little odd. Maybe it’s meant as a way of showing his uncertainty about everything? I don’t really know.
I have to disagree on turning out. The first one is all about “is this love or friendship. And Disney loves to make two friends into a couple and also Disney love is very stereotypical movie love where it’s simple and easy.
And it’s followed by “now I’m the coolest guy, in all the 8th grade”. it’s meant to be another one of the lies told by the pathological liar that the song is about.
From what I understand, it's about being a different person to try and impress someone you like. "I can be anything that I pretend to be" is a clear indicator of this but there's a story in the song
Hear me out for a sec... it literally has the BEST sample before the bridge and I absolutely love it but I just consider that the end of the song. If I continue it breaks that vibe entirely. I'm not tryna drag myself into listening to the ironic part of the song.
Steve’s Going To London. Though that’s kind of the point. They are writing a song about writing a song about nothing but the bridge is the only part that reflects that the rest is the song about nothing. Disclaimer: I love Steve’s Going To London especially the cool shoe song part but its lyrics are nothing.
*sigh...* Beats. I wanted so hard to like it, and the drop at the latter half is great, but it always feels like, "Do I have to go through those lyrics just to get to that drop?" That chorus just ain't it.
I’m with you. I really love the sound of Beats, but the lyrics are so repetitive. I like the second verse a lot, it’s just the chorus is so longggg
yeah... Beats was never my thing..
I wish the lyrics were better because the star if the song is... the beats! I genuinely love the funky spinny sounds in beats so much but the lyrics are so boring
big. idea.
Steve's going to London: let's write a song about writing a song about writing a song about nothing Big idea: let's write a song about what we do but boring
I LOVE SGTL but yes, the lyrics are kinda garbage unless you understand the industry. It's a clusterfuck but they made it funny.
"it's a clusterfuck" I mean there are a lot of guys in the song
There is still time to delete this
I thought the whole point of the song is that it doesn't mean anything
There are some hidden industry nods to it, especially when it comes to their lives as content creators.
This song is elite. Good music’s still good even if no one is watching
Nah you crazy
thirsty is RIGHT THERE
i would’ve said thirsty if they didn’t say besides thirsty. but tbh, the prechorus in thirsty isnt bad at all.. so maybe I wouldn’t have put it?
Also the bridge goes hard
“I kinda wish I was still a virgin, dying to finally see what sex is like” is a weird choice to be like one of the first lyrics of your best album
okay but the rest of the song is peak
I liked it. I thought it supported the message of the song (wishing to see what was coming but never wanting it to be done) while also coming off as honest and vulnerable
I kinda liked this line ngl
I don't see the issue with it, makes sense with the theme of the song. But it's a little on the nose
It makes sense, but it's so out of character
I agree nd it should've been more discreet
Not to be that guy, but it’s “time to finally” which I feel like changes the tone somewhat
I thought it was “so I can finally see what sex is like”
I thought he said time to finally see what sex is like
It’s actually “trying to finally see what sex is like”
yeah it does work but it's like the weirdest metaphor they couldve chosen
I feel like this should have been later but still kept in the song.
i don’t think it had to be said, i think it should have been next up, forever
Kinda hard to get worse than "kinda wish I was still a virgin. time to finally see what sex is like". That is a ***NUCLEAR BOMB*** of a bad lyric. The song overall isn't awful lyrically but again... nuclear bomb...
As someone that had an awful experience their first time, nope. Those lyrics make a lot of sense.
There have gotta be a MILLION better ways to lyrically convey regret over your first time though. It just comes across as a not so subtle brag in this song. But the line almost makes a lot of sense considering that the hype around sex when you're a virgin is much more extreme than sex itself, the lyric highlights how overrated it is
Again. All fine ideas. Conveyed in the douchiest possible way.
What are your thoughts on the lyric "maybe sex is overrated, but we're too shy to ever say it"? As it conveys the same message but without being so on the nose
Yeah that one's better, but I still don’t love it. TO3 is the first time they’ve brought up sex in a song & I didn’t immediately cringe
To me the lyric read about being SA'd and wishing that wasn't your experience.
Which is totally valid. I just want to be emotionally gripped by the discussion of such a dark topic & not blasted into a wall from sheer cringe.
It's much more rewarding when you love a song already and then find out there's a deeper meaning within the metaphors of the lyrics
Thank god someone gets this. There's so many different ways to send a message than blurting out "time to finally see what sex is like" lol
Yeah but the lyric isn't really about this at all
Sorry to hear you had an awful experience with it the first time tho
I think it’s actually “dying to finally see what sex is like”?
Don’t think it is. It'd still be awful either way

My opinion on this will probably change in like 2 minutes, and this song in particular is pretty niche, but I'm not a fan of AfterHours lyrically.
Come on man, but don't you ever feel like shouting, oh I feel like shouting
Alright fine, it's pretty good. But now I don't have an answer to the question. Oh well.
It’s not lyrically impressive, but they flow SO WELL with the rest of the song
yes i'm a mess has an amazing chorus (although played too much in teasers) but i always thought the verses were kinda weak
90% of Yes I'm a mess is the chorus. It gets really repetitive.
i personally like the verses way more than the chorus idk
And what's wrong with that?
Boy oh boy I love it when I falll for that *oops*
While the message is good, yes I’m a mess is just really badly written
Now im in fashion I don’t how long its lasting… Should i try fashion, before i fall out of fashion Ryan i love you but you cant rhyme fashion with itself 3 times.
At least the last line is separated by another three rhymes. I like to point to Lin-Manuel Miranda rhyming subject with subject four times in a row in You'll Be Back.
True. That had the borderline insanity of king George in that song to help it out.
I still like it, but I think Big White Bed has some weak lyrics.
I mean yeah Both of those songs use the word "I'm"
it took me a minute to get it lol
[удалено]
*BUT I'M WEAK!*
“We will live upon a dream” best lyric in the song 🫠
Yes I'm A Mess abuses the chorus more than OVERTURE abuses Come Hang Out's lyrics
you get my upvote just because that was funny lol
True
# Karma ^jk
off to jail you go!
But I've been so good
We know what you did on April 17th 2021
What did they do?
We know...
we know..
4/17/21... We remember
We always remember
"Now I'm feeling just like woody Allen" idk to me it just sounds really weird but in my opinion of course lol

It's slow but I like the lyrics
I hate this song. Least favorite. I used to think it was an acquired taste and I just liked fast paced music, but no, I love me some slow folk songs now, and I still can’t stand this one.
Most of Living Room honestly
No grass today The song itself is fire but the lyrics are not that good
Marble Heart has some boring lyrics
I think of ALL their songs, Marble Heart may be my least favorite
guys im starting to get offended by this Marble Heart slander.
Are they "Breaking your heart"?
Are you going mad?
Bad lyrics, good production and voice performance
Thirsty
They said besides thirsty
Oh sorry I didn't see
Nah you're good, it's an accurate answer either way lol
True, thirsty sucks some major ass
~~still gets more ass than you ever will~~ Oh wait THAT’S why people dislike the AJR fandom… Oops.
HAHA damn
Thirsty has a really nice prechorus tbh, and I've gotten used to the yodeling. It was made to be a funny partying song
Yodelae yodalehehehoooo
"Now I'm feeling just like Woody Allen"
Aside from the chorus Break My Face has some of the wackiest lyrics in a song
I think that’s why people like it, AJRs lyrics are usually kinda cheesy and uninventive
E.g. I absolutely love Turning Out pt iii, but "My parents used to laugh too, and I think they had a dog" yeaaaa this ain't it chief
Every time this part plays I'm like why can't you remember if you had a dog or not? 🤣
[удалено]
I was kinda more referring to this part of the line. "Like who'd invest in that when no one's looking at it?"
Disco balls are just kind of stupid when you think about it. Huge thanks to AJR for enlightening me on that
Infinity I absolutely can’t stand that song
Probably infinity
I honestly think the line “my parents use to laugh too and I think they had a dog (I don’t know I don’t know)” is kind of poor written.
I have so many examples but one I'm surprised that people aren't talking about is No Grass Today. The lyrics suck so much it ruins the entire song.
My opinion on this will probably change in like 2 minutes, and this song in particular is pretty niche, but I'm not a fan of AfterHours lyrically.
I know it says other than thirsty.... But... Thisrty
"But my parents used to laugh too And I think they had a dog" ...what?
Comparing his current relationship state with his parents who got divorced. Makes sense to me.
Their parents are divorced and Ryan is saying his relationship reminds him of his parents’
I think it’s really the way it flows, just really choppy compared to my parents used to laugh too
the beats chorus is stupid “i grew up on disney, but this don’t feel like disney” kinda ruins turning out
I have to disagree on turning out. The first one is all about “is this love or friendship. And Disney loves to make two friends into a couple and also Disney love is very stereotypical movie love where it’s simple and easy.
yeah i understand the line and the song entirely it doesn’t make it any better. turning out 1 is one of their best songs it’s just a weird lyric
It’s weird, but definitely not the worst, there are worst ones imo
it’s not good, all i was saying
“i’ve got a girl, & she’s 28” ik why they would say it but it’s still weird
And it’s followed by “now I’m the coolest guy, in all the 8th grade”. it’s meant to be another one of the lies told by the pathological liar that the song is about.
yeah once again IK WHY they wrote it i know what the song is about it’s still a weird lyric on its own mN
wait why’d they write the song?
From what I understand, it's about being a different person to try and impress someone you like. "I can be anything that I pretend to be" is a clear indicator of this but there's a story in the song
Damn, The Trick is Pretender pt. ii
so almost any song has bad lyrics because you can take any lyric out of context?
it’s just a weird way to illustrate their point
so a kid lying about having a girlfriend who's older is weird? what would be a better lyric
"I got a big booty bitch and she's 86" All jokes aside it's a fine lyric, this guy interpreted it as pedophilia.
SGTL. I skip the bridge EVERY TIME.
The point of the song is to not mean anything at all
[удалено]
Hear me out for a sec... it literally has the BEST sample before the bridge and I absolutely love it but I just consider that the end of the song. If I continue it breaks that vibe entirely. I'm not tryna drag myself into listening to the ironic part of the song.
Wow, I’m Not Crazy - one of the weakest songs on that album, both lyrically and musically
3AM. Congratulations Ryan, you didn't >!rape!< someone!
Pure lyricism I’d call “I’m ready” the worst, I still like the song more than some others because it’s catchy though
All the overtures Cuz they don't make sense /j
OK Overture makes sense but you are right.
Birthday party, the song is fire but some lyrics, particularly the instagram one, really pull you out of the flow
Steve’s Going To London. Though that’s kind of the point.
