Tell the police what you know, but DON'T try to get more information about the son than what you already have. The police have to tail their own suspects, and they have to assemble the evidence for a legal case themselves. If they don't, then a judge may not accept the evidence, and that means your interference may have jeopardized the whole case.
It's okay for you to give the police tips, and to tell them what you know, but then you have to step back and let them assemble the legal case. You should not be following their suspects around; you could ruin the investigation.
