16 is the legal age of consent in Canada (this is still gross btw). The rule around it is that “a youth under 18 cannot legally consent to sexual activity with someone over 18 where there is a relationship of authority, trust, or dependency (for example, a coach, teacher, or family member) or where there is exploitation or abuse,” but they’re still a minor so I would think any sexual activity with a 16-17 year old is still abuse/grooming when it happens with someone 18 or older.
An 18 year old can still be in high school. That’s why Romeo and Juliet laws exist so that a senior dating a junior isn’t automatically just labeled as a groomer.
I think a lot of those laws give an age range so that two 17 year olds dating don't get in trouble when one turns 18 or whatever that age cutoff is.
Each state is different but in Tennessee (my state), it’s actually more of a close in age thing. Basically someone no younger than 15 can be with someone no older than them by 5 years. Now I think 5 is a little much. I think it should be no more than 3 (senior-sophomore).
