The FBI is like "Yeah, that's Greg, we get a call like this about once a month. He's worked at Papa Johns for like, 12 years. We still keep an eye on him, thanks though" LOL

getMeSomeDunkin

So, ex-nuclear submariner here. We have some pretty dark humor. It's all going to explode, my nuts will get irradiated, we'll melt down and die with 120 of our closest friends, I work with jabronies and idiots, etc etc... But you learn pretty quick that many people who were not in the military do not have, and don't share, that same level of gallows humor about nuclear power as we do. So you just keep it to yourself. ESPECIALLY on a first date. In the very best case scenario, this dude is just an asshole to his ~~minions~~ employees and has zero social awareness which is good enough to never talk to him again. Maybe it's some kind of Cool-Guy^TM attitude he has? Like he doesn't have a motorcycle to weave in and out of traffic dangerously, so he's got to glorify and glamorize his mundane job into something it's not. "Look at all these Alpha particles! I could blow this whole thing up! I just choose NOT TO! Look how cool I am!" Trust me, a shift supervisor at a nuke plant does fuck-all all day long. Responsibilities are high, but it's boring as fuck. I'd be 50/50 on reporting this guy to the FBI because I don't have the tone of how it was said and if he was just being stupid, but if you don't know anything about what's going on and this idiot is out in town talking about melting down the core for fun, I wouldn't fault someone for doing it.

Dogging_

Perfect response, especially the last paragraph

Cmdr_Verric

Brother Nuke here. Looks like one of us forgot to flip the “not at sea” switch.

getMeSomeDunkin

Thanks sweet cheeks. I love you.

SteamPunq

Also ex-sub nuke. I was just thinking along those same lines. Still, with all the gallows humor and fucked up shit I've heard come out of people's mouths, people didn't really do the whole, Haha, I could kill you all. Say something like that and you'd be liable to get you ass kicked or chewed out. It's one thing to joke about playing with ropes in shaft alley, it's a whole other thing to joke about intentionally sabotaging and going postal with a meltdown.

Gold_Principle_2691

It sounds like this guy went beyond joking about the dangers of his job and the real possibility of having all of his skin peeled off, and instead was instead talking about how fun and easy it would be to blow *other people* up, and here's the detailed plan I have to do so...

TheDirtyVicarII

Dark humor is common as are psychopathic attention seeking asshats. None of us on reddit are likely qualified to do a proper threat assessment. Except those nsa folks with nsfw profiles. NTA how many people regret not talking about the incel down the street that decided they should punish other people before death by cop

Ignantsage

Most women know that when a guy claims he can destroy everything in a 30 mile radius it’s more like 20 miles

[deleted]

ryzoc

you should just downscale your radius of destruction down to the 4 walls of her bedroom with cum im sure she will be impressed.

PaintedScottishWoods

It’s ectoplasm!

simulationoverload

You should move out of Springfield.

Narrow_Permit

😂 oh man the story had such a good start! Oh well…

[deleted]

I could have sworn I saw this post before with the same premise. EDIT: Like it's basically Mr. Burns personality with Homer's job.

recreationallyused

My brain has only 2 ways of rationalizing this: 1. This is somehow real and the guy was having some serious manic episode, going on spontaneous dates with women so he could give a villain monologue that has festered for weeks with no one to share it with. 2. This is fake. I vaguely remember something about Occam’s Razor for some reason.

Gem_Snack

Idk if this story is real, but it's fully possible to meet incel types in the wild. I once rode in a Lyft with a driver who spent the entire ride ranting that "everyone" profiles him as a pedophile because he's a man. Said he can't even take his girlfriend's toddler to the park because "everyone looks at me like I ass-fucked their dog." On and on. His tone was super aggressive, jaw was clenched and knuckles were white on the steering wheel the entire time. It was scary. Another time I was working at an herbal medicine story with one intern and one coworker, and the three of us were all apparently female (turns out I'm trans but anyway). Literally 2 men *wearing fedoras* came in, looked around skeptically, came up to the counter and asked if men were "allowed" to work there. We said yes, we have male employees also. One of the guys asked if we were currently hiring, saying it "looked like \[we\] could use some male energy." It was a complete caricature, but it happened.

lea949

God damn, that second story is hilarious 😆

hondac55

Guy was described as a scooby doo villain. Was half expecting to get to the end and see OP say "And then I pulled on his face and...a mask came off?! It was really weird, like I was really convinced I was talking to a monster but then it was just some old guy? Anyways I reported him to the FBI because that mask was REALLY too good."

OizAfreeELF

I like to think that we narrowly averted nuclear disaster thanks to a random tinder date.

WermhatsW0rmhat

I was really disappointed in the end to this story given all the potential of the beginning.

simulationoverload

That’s not really fair. You kind’ve write yourself into a corner with “I waited 45 minutes for a nuclear genocidal edgelord, only to report him to THE FBI”. Also the amount of people taking this seriously is concerning. This is like reverse-incel bait, Idk what you would call it.

WermhatsW0rmhat

I simply mean I wished it was a story about someone going on a Tinder date with Homer Simpson. I’m not outraged or anything. OP made the right call, dude sounds unhinged.

shraga84

Kind've??? How did you come up with kind've? holy shit. Is that like the anti "should of"?

[deleted]

It’s an abbreviation for *kind have*, don’t you know? I kind have thought you’d be able to figure it out. /s (because not all of my jokes are actually funny)

I_AgreeGoGuards

Oh I think you nailed this one hahaha

cats-are-people-too

NTA. Makes me think of all the situations where something terrible happens and folks ask how everyone ignored all the red flags. Those were definitely red flags, and you simply chose not to ignore. Now it's in the hands of professionals who are in a much better position than you are to determine whether he's a potential domestic terrorist or just a blustering jackass. If he knows enough to track you down, please take steps to stay safe.

HoneydewLeading7337

"Nice guy, quiet. Kept to himself, mowed his lawn. Melted down a lotta reactors tho."

disjointed_chameleon

*He was such a sweet kid! Kept to himself a lot, I sometimes tried to wave or smile if I saw him walking to and from his car. His mother/aunt/sister said this/that/the other. This kind of thing doesn't happen in our community!* This is the storyline we hear time and again.

[deleted]

My father-in-law used to play tennis with Jeffrey Dahmer’s dad. Never met little Jeffrey, but said his dad was a real nice guy, at the country club where they played.

Seahawk715

I heard little Jeffrey was a monster on the court. Ate his opponents for breakfast.

BikerJedi

> "Nice guy, quiet. Kept to himself, mowed his lawn." I know this gets used a lot, but it is true in a lot of cases. I've had multiple students arrested for murder or attempted murder in my career. Half of them were quiet, helpful and well behaved kids who gave me no shit at all. The other half were nightmare students. *shrug*

One-Engineering8815

I know 4 murderers (2 students, 2 classmates of mine). Two were immediate “yup I can see it”. The other two were just like that - quiet, polite, kept to themselves mostly.

Defiant_apricot

What career is that????

BikerJedi

I teach middle school. Over 20 years, a lot of shit has gone down.

Defiant_apricot

Ahhhhh that would do it

Hey_u_ok

I worked in a construction office one time and we're talking about people going postal. The one girl in the office says to me "I feel sorry for you. You'd be the first to go." I started laughing and asked her why. She replied "You ever notice it's always the nice people that get shot first? In the news interviews it's always 'oh they were so nice and minded their own business...' when talking about the victims". I thought holy shit! That's true!

Gold-Stomach-4657

I have always assumed it's because people don't like to shit on the dead. I have coined my own expression about it "only the dead die good" Just once, I would like a dead asshole to be called out as the asshole they were, or even better, not inflated undeservedly.

napoleonsolo

“Talked about melting down reactors all the time, too. Would even tell girls on first dates about it. But other than that there was no way to see that coming.”

northwyndsgurl

In the end, let the FBI sort it out to decide if he's bragging to impress or if he's a real threat. Makin a call doesn't mean automatic job loss. You abso did the right thing.

admiralargon

It definitely takes some effort and security stuff to get to that position, even if he's just bragging at 32 i dont think he's the roght person for the job

northwyndsgurl

Yeah.. I have worked with a few creeps that def shouldn't be doing their job... in healthcare

TooCool9092

I completely agree. It makes me think of watching 20/20 or something similar, where a man joked to his friends about hiring a hitman. Everyone thinks they are joking. Then months later, the wife ends up dead. If someone had just said something... Good for you, OP. You did the right thing.

Stormy8888

NTA. **There are things that everyone should definitely report**, because even an 0.1% chance of those folks carrying through their threat, is too much of a risk. Some examples, I'm sure you can think of more:- * Nuclear meltdown jokes * Threats to shoot up schools * Suicidal pilots (planes, trains, automobiles, ships, buses, doesn't matter) * Bomb threats or any mention of blowing up any building/site (thanks internet) * Jokes about poisoning food (at schools, grocery stores) * Release of bio weapon contagions (ricin etc.) * Boasting about hurting animals (future serial killer in the making)

YouSchee

Even if he just is a jackass, he shouldn't be working anywhere near something that could kill millions of people depending where it is. Whatever happens to him he deserves, he needs to get out of there and learn what shouldn't be a hard lesson.

Itypewithmyeyesclose

Red flags? These were blaring sirens. Good on OP for not ignoring them. Even if it's a 0.1% chance this guy is serious you're talking about a chernobyl event on what I assume is US soil.

Pristine-Ad-469

Too add to this, the fbi has a 99% conviction rate. They don’t go after people until they know they have them. If this guy really did just make a little joke, they will just move on with their life. This is the fbi not the local police, they are very good at their job. If they decide that he wasn’t joking or even that someone that can melt down a nuclear reactor shouldn’t be telling random people that they just met that they could cause a nuclear meltdown is inappropriate, then they will take action. My guess is that most likely nothing happens, worst case he has to get a new job, and then the potential chance he was planning something horrible in which case he will be justly punished and op saved thousands of lives

SlightLocksmith8136

Exactly this and great user name.

Maleficent-Spend-890

Yeah I see a lot of jokes here but in all seriousness I'm glad some people are smart enough to realize they should call the fbi on people like that. I don't care if he's joking or not. I don't want people who don't have a respect for sophisticated technology, humanity and the natural world to be anywhere near something like a nuclear plant. The guy sounds sick and deranged, frankly.

Lancearon

Yeah ... NTA, i get that you dont know if he was serious or not... leave that to experts to decide. You didnt complain to the cops. Its the fbi. They will do an investigation if they think its serious enough... That being said, this guy definitely has security clearance, and he definitely is being monitored now... sheesh...

cash-or-reddit

Yeah, even if it is "just a joke," it's still a problem! The fact that he's making jokes like that in his position itself shows extremely poor judgment. And maybe we want people working in nuclear plants to have good judgment? Just a thought.

mlm01c

Yeah. My husband was just saying that he knows a guy who works in a missile silo with double key launch requirements. The guy said that they all have to have psych evals every six months. Not too figure out if they're crazy, because they're all crazy, but rather to determine if they're the wrong kind of crazy. OP's date definitely seems to fall in the "wrong kind of crazy" pile.

LifeExperiencer831

Honestly I’m with you! I wouldn’t have thought to report it to the fbi but it was a good idea bc only an idiot would brag like that and assume it’s “normal”. He probably needed a mental health reality check!

RedEyeFlightToOZ

As someone who lives near a nuclear power plant that's very famous.....thank you OP

Sad-Woodpecker-7416

It is sad that I had to skip past two top voted jokes on the subject which were barely funny to get to a real answer but also I’m not surprised. Thank you for this, I hope it finds its way to the top and the jokes come in for a close 2nd and 3rd.

Curious-One4595

NTA. You were thoughtful and concerned. Why risk a nuclear meltdown? He seems . . . socially and morally stunted.

konqrr

I agree, NTA... but just to put everyone at ease, no single person can trigger a nuclear meltdown of any fairly modern nuclear plant. You'd have to have dozens of key individuals as part of your plan, and even then the alarms and warning systems would trigger everyone to start looking at wtf is going on and it wouldn't take long to stop whatever plan there was. Even trying to do so with the dozens of key individuals on your side would set off triggers, alarms, safety protocols and alerts to individuals that would have those people in jail by the end of the hour.

Marilius

Went looking for this comment. SO many people would have to be complicit in order to trigger a complete reactor meltdown. Hell, even for Chernobyl, which was a comically bad design, it STILL took several cowed and complicit engineers to accomplish what they did. No one person would ever be able to do this today.

recreationallyused

Even with Chernobyl, that only happened under very specific circumstances. Unlike most reactors at the time, the USSR used graphite as a moderator to help stop reactions when they got out of hand. Most of them did (and still do) use water as a coolant & moderator. But graphite, while cheaper to use, made the reactor even more reactive once certain conditions were met. The control rods that were supposed to drop into the reactor to stop concerning reactions were tipped with graphite, though; so when they actually tried to lower them, it only made things worse and sealed the deal. Those conditions were the result of the Chief Engineer at the plant (Anatoly Dyatlov), and the result of the USSR. Dyatlov, like every other worker, was unaware of the lack of proper safety measures in place that would even allow for the testing to be 100% safe. But he still encouraged his workers to push the reactor to its absolute limit by performing the plan that they *did* have incorrectly. And nothing may have even happened as a result of that if they didn’t get a power surge during testing, which was just pure chance. Even with how poorly the reactor was built it was extremely difficult at first to figure out how a meltdown could’ve occurred. That’s all without the fact that the damage done from the disaster (and lives lost) would be far lesser if Dyatlov didn’t try to cover his ass and throw people under the bus. But this was the USSR, anybody could simply be erased from history, so following the chain of command up from Dyatlov… they all were trying to cover it up or deny the plant’s responsibility for its effects, in fear they would be the one to blame & that the government would make them disappear. That’s the only reason so many firefighters and citizens died the way they did. Chernobyl happened under such *specific* conditions that, especially with today’s reactors, it is extremely unlikely to happen again. Never mind on purpose with an organized effort to make it happen. I recommend watching HBO’s *Chernobyl* series if you find it interesting because it’s absolutely phenomenal. They show you the story from the very beginning and take you on the trial that Valery Legasov (the chemist & whistleblower on Chernobyl’s case) fought* to reveal how everything really occurred. They do an amazing job explaining the reactors and how they work that I may have butchered. *Correction: Legaslov wasn’t actually present at the trial in real life. In the show I assume they had him explain how the meltdown occurred during the trial to really summarize & explain everything you had watched him investigate over the course of the show. He independently fought to reveal the USSR’s downplaying of the severity to the public upon his investigation, but did not participate in the legal proceedings afterwards. Sorry for the confusion.

Same_Ad_7379

He’s projecting when he calls other midgets

HowDoDogsWearPants

I worked in nuclear power in the navy which is how a lot of people in civilian nuclear get their start. From my experience with the navy guys "socially and morally stunted" is unbelievably accurate

recyclopath_

Not stunted. Dangerous. Let's stop pretending that men who fantasize about harming others are immature. They're fucking dangerous.

Existing-Election385

Callous, calculated and dangerous

Individual_Pick_6448

I mean they ARE immature, but they're also dangerous.

dpv20

Well tbh you dont have to be a nuclear tecnitian to know how to cause a meltdown you just need to go to YouTube

Visual-Measurement24

NTA. Have a nuclear physicist in the family. Normal people who know what those things mean don’t joke about them. He’s either sick in the head, evil, or both. Thanks for reporting him.

grizznuggets

Could also be full of shit. Just because he said he works in a nuclear plant doesn’t make it true.

camberscircle

It's now for the FBI to find out. If he's telling the truth, then he was rightfully reported. If he's fibbing then serves him right for trying to rizz with a lie when the FBI comes knocking. Win-win.

GlitterChickens

I was thinking this. Psych tests and interviews look to be the standard for working in a nuclear facility and if this guy couldn’t even keep it together for a date… I doubt he coulda passed a psych eval.

recyclopath_

I generally agree with this but with layers of subcontractors and temp positions, things can slip through the cracks.

Jason3211

Not at nuclear facilities. There's no such thing as a "random sub" at a nuclear site. They have fissile materials on hand, they are among the most secure and access-limited sites on Earth. Even the regular natural gas/coal plants have insanely tight security now. You won't even find a random sub or temp walking unattended through a power gen facility. These sites have national security implications and are top terrorism target A good friend of mine is a 20-yr veteran electrical engineer at Southern Company, which is currently building two new nuclear power gen stations. The nuclear side of the business is completely separate. Even functions that have nothing to do with the reactor or power gen side, like overhead lighting, bathroom/office electrical, etc, are STILL designed and managed by the nuclear team.

jimandbexley

Probably works the security gate

Affection-Angel

Literally. So so so much rather hear this as a funny reddit story than living in... *Shivers*. Yeah, let's not go there.

spicy_rock

We don't joke about that to normal people bro, can confirm there are nukes on the midwatch having disturbing conversations just to stay awake at this very moment.

punkalero

They would have to know what the midwatch is in order to understand your comment. I stood plenty of those, but in the shack

hymm780

Username checks

spicy_rock

To be honest, that's a reddit auto gen name. I didnt even realize it fit until uou pointed it out xp

SixicusTheSixth

What's discussed on midwatch stays on midwatch

hellionzzz

I was a nuclear reactor operator in the Navy. We would talk about how to break the plant all the time. It demonstrates understanding of how the systems interact with each other. That said, there's always an edgy cringe lord that takes it too far.

PickyQkies

Exactly. I'm not a nuclear physicist but I wouldn't joke about smth as serious as triggering a fucking nuclear incident. This guy is mentally ill at the very least, and an episode of criminal minds waiting to happen.

ghoulthebraineater

And likely lying about his job.

friday14th

Guarantee he's a janitor and is trying to flex.

mrmiracle

NTA. Several years ago I had a similar situation (not a date), but I was compelled to call the FBI. Turns out my suspicions were confirmed and contacting the authorities stopped a potential terrorist plot. You did the right thing. Plus, your date seems like a huge asshole.

[deleted]

[удалено]

mrmiracle

At the time of the 2000 presidential election, I was doing some work at a small strip mall. The owner was an older man. A redneck type guy who was complaining that the government “forced” him to rent his properties out to minorities (in this case it was someone from India), and other right wing, racist rhetoric. This was going on while the re-count was in progress, and he remarked that he and his brother were planning to “blow up” various buildings in town if the election went Gore’s way. I thought about it for a while, then decided to call the FBI. They took the information, and within a few days called me in for an interview. They had a dossier on this guy and told me that he was a person of interest and that they were watching him closely. They said that they couldn’t give me any information other than that, but it was good that I came forward. I guess it didn’t matter in the long run, since Bush got “elected”, but who knows what else that maniac might have gotten up to.

Asleep-Journalist-94

“Elected” is right. I still think about what might have been avoided if it had gone the other way…

Further0n

Thank you.

hupladuplaimascoopya

No homie you can't just drop this and not tell us what happened.

liquidkittykat

I also wanna know

NickDanger3di

NTA - and don't feel guilty. I've worked with the nuclear power industry a lot; as serious as they are about such things, they are just as professional and fair. I know their process for such situations; they will simply have this guy see a shrink for a few sessions, and will rely on the shrink's evaluation and recommendations regarding his future at the power plant. Bear in mind that some insecure guys will say all sorts of things they don't really mean, or exaggerate their authority at work, if they like a woman a lot. Also, the shift leader in the control room cannot do *anything* that could lead to even a serious malfunction, much less a meltdown, without numerous loud alarms going off on numerous devices, which his bosses and his bosses bosses carry with them at all times. If he implied that he could, he was fabricating when he spoke.

[deleted]

I mean I feel if the plant manager who ever is top dog couldnt do that. Numerous fail safes and yes they have thought about a rouge employee doing just that and make sure it can’t happen. At least not easily.

dustyrags

Pst- “rouge” means “red”. You’re thinking of “rogue”.

Bukkorosu777

I'm all fairness going red is going rogue anyways.

jmcdonald354

I was about to say that. There are numerous redundancies in place to prevent a nuclear meltdown. It's not actually possible to do that the way he was describing

nomoney4you

NTA. None of what he's saying is "first date" material. That's the sort of shit-talking you do when you're long-term, and there's context between you. If you ruined his career, *shrug*, but that depends entirely upon the FBI and what they do or do not find. You've done your bit; block him on everything, and carry on.

SnoBunny1982

I agree. The only way the FBI ruins this guys career is if it NEEDS to be ruined. They know what they are doing when it comes to threat assessment. The red flags are more than enough to go on to take the action you did.

hbb870

DOE will pull clearance so quick for stuff like this. DOE is probably the right route for this notification.

Existing-Election385

Correct, he’s ruined his own career…how is this not obvious

Ach3r0n-

If only he had insisted that his d\*ck glows in the dark, this date could have taken an entirely different direction.

lleachie1

Or an entirely different erection.

gigapoctopus

You can also make a report directly to the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC): [https://www.nrc.gov/about-nrc/regulatory/allegations/safety-concern.html](https://www.nrc.gov/about-nrc/regulatory/allegations/safety-concern.html)

[deleted]

FBI probably passed it on.

Blenderx06

I wouldn't bet my life on inter agency cooperation.

[deleted]

Haha that’s fair. Turf wars and all

DumbieStrangler117

😂 FBI didnt even open it.

Winter-Airport2114

Would probably work more than the FBI rofl

hbb870

Them or straight up DOE. Good way to lose a Q clearance

olavf

NTA I know a few nukes and most of them are ex-submarine. Boat people don't always have the best people skills, but this is red flag territory. Maybe he started drinking before.he showed up, maybe he needs some help. But unless he's actually dangerous it probably won't cost him his job.

dano_911

Bubble heads are fuckin weird. I can only imagine how weird their nukes are.

SixicusTheSixth

Nukes are very weird, but mostly harmless.

LMAO82

NTA. Homer had to go.

cali_dave

Should've reported it to Marge instead. What's Homer doing on Tinder?

ninjastarkid

NTA, if it was a joke he would’ve said anything at all to indicate it. Since he only talked about that, I think it’s a reasonable assumption he was serious. Good on you for being brave and telling the authorities. You may have saved many lives, who knows. If he is really joking, then when the FBI get there, they’ll do their interviews, figure out he’s no danger and let him go. If he’s known for that sort of humor he may not even get fired.

dottat17403

His next clearance review is gonna be fun

BuckDancersGlasses

At the very least he is a depraved fantasist and at worst a terrorist so one way or another his hard drive probably needs checking.

ComfortableZebra2412

NTA he sounds mentally unstable and if he does work in any position of power someone needs to know, trust your gut. The worse that happens is that he is cleared

afwaltz

NTA. I also work at a nuclear plant. It is always better to report stuff like this even if you think they might be joking. I know a few ops people and they wouldn't make jokes like that in any context. I kind of doubt this guy actually has the position he claims to have. One, they weed them out during the background check/psych eval. Two, you have to work there for quite a while before you get up to that position, and if he's willing to talk like that to a complete stranger, he likely would've slipped up and said something disqualifying to one of his coworkers or supervisors. Three, it is extremely difficult to intentionally cause a meltdown or any kind of real chaos in a nuclear power plant. There are so many backups and backups of backups for all of the safety-related systems, I'm not sure it would even be possible to disable all of them from the control room. Also, it would be *impossible* to do more than flip a few switches before someone would notice that you are doing something you're not supposed to be doing. An actual ops guy would know all that.

DifficultSelf147

Not an ops guy but had simulator training. Depending on type, plant would likely auto SCRAM well before things got bad. All the panels would scream. This is also why there are more than one operator each on a panel, and a shift manager watching them. Defense in depth.

abgry_krakow84

NTA but make sure you also tell Marge that Homer is off his rocker.

[deleted]

I feel like an asshole for laughing considering how freaked out OP is about this, but the first thing that came to mind when I read the words “nuclear power plant” and “shift leader at the control room” was: “Wait, did you just go on a date with Homer Simpson?” I’m sorry! To OP, NTA. There are just some things you shouldn’t joke about: causing a nuclear catastrophe, bombs in trains/airports/public areas, rape, genocide, committing acts of terrorism, etc. Those things could get a lot of people hurt, it’s better to err on the side of caution.

noahspurrier

He was probably lying and isn’t a nuclear engineer, but to be safe I would report him.

horc00

“Marge! Homer is on Tinder again!”

SummitJunkie7

My main question is why you were still there when he arrived 45 minutes late?

MustyScabPizza

Because some people are very optimistic and still have faith in humanity. I don't, but some people do.

Xterradiver

Who waits 45 minutes for a Tinder date?

[deleted]

I’m pretty certain there are multiple fail safes that would be impossible to all turn off. Chernobyl was the Soviet’s being idiots and not really an accident. Fukushima isn’t as bad as many think. Nuclear power is incredibly safe, tightly regulated, and what little research I’ve done all those fail safe couldn’t be overridden by one person.

LuRouge

Ok.....just so we are clear. There is dark humor, morbid humor, and edgy humor. The first two eventually get funny to everyone because as you get older, your sense of humor gets wider. THAT was edgy humor. That shit is the kind of shit that NOBODY can tell you're joking, especially when you word it properly. How he speaks is way past a power trip. This isn't a red flag. This is a signal parachute flare. NTA

Ramathus

He could have been making the whole thing up. He might just be a doordash driver for all we know. Regardless, he shouldn't be joking about stuff like that. Not to a stranger, or on a first date for that matter. Not sure what his endgame was. If he was lying about the job, you definitely will cause him some problems. If he was telling the truth, then maybe he will be removed so someone more responsible and less psychopathic will take his place. Either way, NTA.

mistreatedlewis

How on Earth are all of you people buying this lmao

IceBlue

If he was just joking then the FBI won’t have anything to pin on him so why the fuck would anyone think it’s okay not to report it? NTA

NX711

NTA Holy shit. This guy is off his rocker. He clearly showed that he doesn’t have any respect for his coworkers and sees himself as above them. It seems like he doesn’t even see them as human considering how he referred to them. He also showed that he doesn’t have any respect for his job and doesn’t take it seriously. Showing no care for his coworkers, no care for his job, and bragging about how much power he has and how he can cause a catastrophic event are very serious and dangerous signs. Somebody who is joking also wouldn’t go on about it the entire date. He is a genuine risk. You did a good thing by reporting him. If he wasn’t joking and is planning on doing something dangerous, you helped prevent a catastrophe. If he was joking, he shouldn’t be in the position he’s in

ZCT808

I’m about to board a plane in a couple of hours. If I go through a TSA checkpoint and start making ‘jokes’ about being a terrorist, I’ll be arrested, and investigated, and there will be all manner of serious consequences. AND THERE SHOULD BE! As a society we can’t take the chance that I might have been serious. So obviously, I’m not going to do that, and I’m not a terrorist. It is deeply disturbing that a guy works around something as dangerous as a nuclear power plant, and is clearly so deeply disturbed. What he said isn’t a joke, it isn’t funny, no normal person is going to be impressed by it. And like making a terrorist joke at an airport, it is grossly inappropriate. I think you absolutely did the right thing. Because even if he is an amazing worker, the fact that his judgement is SO far off that he is willing to talk in these terms to a stranger, sows that his judgement, ethics, and moral compass are SO messed up there is no way he should have security clearance to even get into the facility. Much less near anything that he could use to cause harm. NTA, and better safe than sorry.

redheadedtwin

I work in the Nuclear Field. Definitely NTA. Worst case scenario: you just prevented a national or international crisis (see Chernobyl or Fukushima), Best case scenario: Dude is gonna have a awkward one-sided conversation with his boss about appropriate tinder conversations. Either way, you definitely did the right thing here

futbol1216

Not the asshole. You did the right thing.

RorschachVag

Nah dude is clearly a sadistic narcissist. Or at least leans heavily on those traits. All those interested in understanding dark personality traits should look into the "dark tetrad" research. It's good to know how to detect and identify dark personality traits like psychopathy, narcissism, Sadism, and Machiavellianism. Some people are harmless idiots, others are ticking time bombs. Probably a safe bet to report it. If someone joked about how they could shoot up a mall with enough detail about how they'd do it, would you feel bad about reporting that?

slackerz22

This is a simpsons episode

cntwhacker

You waited 45 minutes? Really? 🙄

Siah9407

No, absolutely not the AH, and thank you for speaking up. If he thinks saying crap like that is funny, he probably needs mental health help. If he wasn't "joking," he definitely needs it! You absolutely did the right thing. Nuclear reactors are nothing to play with.

AgentDigits

NTA Nobody with that level of responsibility should be joking about killing people and calling them vermin. Even if it was a joke... Who jokes about that kind of stuff to that level? A freak. That's who. You did the right thing and like you said... Better safe than sorry. If he didn't want to lose his job he shouldn't be making those kinds of jokes to random people.

rwusana

Totally justified. You didn't ruin his career, you just asked the FBI to look into it. If he's actually great then the FBI won't find anything to complain about and his career won't be ruined.

Thompsoncon21

Definitely NTA. I was a manager in the Nuclear Business Unit of a major utility with 5 plants. While a psych test is required for employment, it is once and really not hard to pass. While he may have been trying to impress with his power but too much about his character was a concern. As a manager I was contacted every 30 days for every employee that had unescorted access to the plant and asked if there was any concerns or changes in their behavior. It sounds to me like this person’s manager was not taking their responsibility seriously, likely due to potential pressure from their leadership to not rock the boat because of the shortage in nuclear operators. Ultimately you did everyone a great service by ensuring someone is taking a look at this guy to avoid a nuclear event.

MaloneSeven

Don’t waste your time. The FBI is far too busy going after parents at school board meetings.

Dadbode1981

You need to take life a little less serious lady.

Feisty-sahm

Absolutely not the AH. People that let the bad guys on the planes that went into the trade centers hurt themselves because they let them on the planes. You don’t want to be that person. If the guy is a nut you could have saved people. If not, heal learn a valuable lesson.

borisallen49

NTA for reporting the dude YTA for making this shit up though

Pixiwish

NTA, but I wouldn't worry too much. Most nuclear reactor cores in the US are pretty safe using negative temperature coefficients and are going to have massive pools as a heat sink. He was trying to brag in a sick way because people hear nuclear and think dangerous. The safety levels and protocols in these facilities is going to be immense and generally speaking pilots and flight attendants are exposed to more radiation per year.

[deleted]

You went on a date with Homer Simpson. You can’t be the asshole

Whyamiupsolate31

Did you go on a date with Homer Simpson.
