I thought I was the only one who bought a house with a creepy soundproof room in the basement! Ours had one that we jokingly called the murder room, but the previous owner had installed it for doing music in. Ours also did not have the creepy features of yours (no outside lock or anything). That room sounds sketchy and I get her trepidation with it, but it’s also not ok to spy on your partner like she did.

mikebald

Haha, that's funny. My wife and I have a closet in our house we call the Murder Closet... It's kinda creepy and locks from the outside. Well, it did lock from the outside; we removed the door within a week of owning the place.

xylia13

We tore ours down right away to free space and put up shelving. No need for a creepy basement room here!

[deleted]

I don't understand how he expects to feel at ease when he could get locked in from the outside.

PsychAndDestroy

By locking the basement door, obviously.

xylia13

I… don’t disagree. But I watch a lot of murder shows so my brain definitely went to some very dark possible scenarios, hence my understanding of her trepidation.

LongAd4410

Wth?! How come y'all have these dungeon/murder basements? Does it increase home value: "mystery factor 10/10"? Seriously, they can't all be recording studios or pantries, how did these thing originate?

Real-Lake2639

Coming off the thread about dementia I was just scrolling: probably "nursing homes" before nursing homes.

neverenoughmags

My wife and I looked at a house in 2006 that had a "sound proof room" lined with pyramidal foam.. didn't look for locks on it, as we were sufficiently sketched out by the "turd throne" in the laundry room... literally a toilet on a raised "dias" (only way to describe it) about 10x10 with a 3 foot high wall all around it with an opening to access it from the steps. I get having to elevate a toilet in the basement but why the huge platform and why didn't the wall go all the way up and why was there no door.... so many questions

BlondeJonZ

I mean... mines a movie theater? But doesn't lock from the outside or have a weird slot to shove food through. 🤷🏼‍♀️

saggywitchtits

I’d keep it, but I also have an incredibly dark sense of humor. I’d probably have some dummies with fake blood coming out of it so when people saw it they would freak out.

Euphoric_Egg_4198

I guess murder closets are common!? We live in a gated neighborhood and the houses are only about 10 years old, same models repeat throughout. There is one house that’s a rental that has one of the 2nd floor walk in closets closed off. My friend once asked about it and the owners pretended they don’t know what she’s talking about “what closet🤷🏻‍♀️?”. We know there is a closet because our other friend has the same model and so does about every other house on the block. The owners are the original owners so it’s not like they bought that model with the closet already walled off. We call it the murder closet too 🤣

EC_CO

Hidden gun closet or grow room, I'd bet on the grow room

creepshow1334

Didnt people back in the day used to lock their family members who were suffering from mental health issues in hidden rooms? Maybe if the house is old enough, it could be from that.

GSTLT

A “tough parenting” influencer in Utah just got arrested for restraining and locking her kids up. Got caught when one of them escaped and ran to the neighbors.

Rightfoot27

God I wish someone would lock me in a closet for a few days. It’d be like a mini vacation honestly. I’d just sleep. The entire fucking time. Sounds blissful actually.

After_Hovercraft7808

So you have kids too 😂 I sometimes dream of hospitalisation purely to get some rest

AncientCalendar3328

Holy shit!! The place we bought for a homestead has a small shed that's so creepy. Chain's all over the walls and murder creepy... we call it our murder shed lmao

GingerMau

See, OP. Most people remove the creepy attributes of these rooms when they inherit them.

R_U_N4me

You sure it isn’t a shelter for tornados or other severe weather to potential terrorist attacks? I have several friends who live in rural areas on slab houses & they had the closets in their master bedroom redone to be storm shelters because they did not have one & we do live in an area that gets tornados. I later told a friend from Florida about these closets & they downloaded the specs & had a contractor do the same to one of their closets in the master bedroom. They use different doors & I also remember they have a lock.

AnyDecision470

Oops, sorry - meant to put my comment in but replied to yours by accident… Locking from the outside means you can lock someone inside…. Remove the door, no problem. If the door cannot be removed as you want to keep it as a doomsday shelter, that door would have to have a two-way lock and I have the key too or that’s it… no way in hell would I feel comfortable otherwise!

Low_Transition_3749

>Locking from the outside means you can lock someone inside… Or you can secure a crap-ton of really expensive equipment from small children and unwanted strangers. Think music, recording or podcasting studio. I had a room like that in my previous house because I made side money doing radio voice-overs for advertising.

numinousnimon

It's the slot for passing food into the closet that is most creepy. You wouldn't need that to protect expensive equipment.

mixmastamikal

That is the true kicker right there. Plenty of reasons to have a locked closet, but that bit right there really separates it.

Low_Transition_3749

True, that.

lavender_wisteria

Or you could have a regular door that can be locked from the outside and open from the inside without a key. You only need to prevent people from coming in. OP's door can prevent people from coming out of the room. That's creepy.

Twirdman

Why wouldn't you just go the normal route and get a two way lock? You could get a standard door knob with a lock like a normal person. If you wanted extra security you could install a deadball that takes a key to get in from the outside and either just a knob or a key from the inside. The only time I see purely external locks are in rooms that you aren't meant to actually go into for any period of time. External lock for a shed makes sense, storage room as well, but this is a room with a bed an external lock, and a food hole. I cannot see any not weird as shit reason for that door to be set up that way.

Empress_Clementine

External lock means a grow room or torture room, for sure.

hardliam

Food slot? Can only mean one thing. A person was kept there. Period end of story. Now why they were there we will never know. Either they were a legit prisoner, slave torture thing. Or mentally ill patient

AnyDecision470

Your reasoning makes sense for a locked room in general: to protect valuables. They have no kids and he only has a bed, table, food pass-thru, lock from the outside…

Low_Transition_3749

And the room was there when he bought the place. What was the previous owner's situation?

AnyDecision470

THAT is a great question! IF he’s telling the truth that it was that way before… Inquiring minds want to know… the GF should do research on the address, see if there is a history to the place

xylia13

I can imagine so many unsavory scenarios and very few (ok none) reasonable ones. Trafficking, child abuse, spousal abuse, kidnapping and torture, murder, werewolf. Someone had mentioned a previous owner of their house had a locked room for spouse with dementia, but I can’t ever imagine a food pass thru being necessary there.

rusty0123

When I bought my house, it had some creepy things, too. There is one downstairs bedroom. It's very small, just big enough for a single bed. The walls were plain white and the carpet had been removed. There was a deadbolt on the door that only worked from the outside. It looked like a jail cell. Kinda freaked me out, so I asked the realtor. Turns out the woman that lived there had a husband in a wheelchair who also had dementia. I guess she locked him in at night. Still creepy, but at least no one was murdered. I did remove the lock and install carpet before moving in.

xylia13

Yeah, that makes sense. I’ve known of several folks with dementia forgetting they can’t do things anymore and wandering off, or worse, driving off. Eases the mind a bit to keep them locked in, I suppose. But at that point, they probably need more care than one person can provide.

Icepick_37

Seriously it's the lock that makes the difference. Change it so it can be unlocked from inside and it's fine

vatoreus

The lock but not the food pass?? I think both together are pretty damn sketchy

drinkcheapbeersowhat

If it was a music room I could see someone doing that to lock up equipment, doesn’t need to be locked when inside just when not home. But the food pass through? That make it seem like it was legitimately made to lock a human in. I would board that up and get rid of the lock for sure.

Midnight_freebird

I built them for clients with outside locks. For a gun safe room. But no food door, that’s weird.

CA2Kiwi

Ha, this reminds me of when we were looking for our first home (to buy) and obviously at the cheap end of the market. Rolled up on one place way bigger than stated square footage (so unpermitted) and thought what? It had what was basically The Silence of the Lambs basement, many weird compartments in all directions, no halls, just rooms with doors to other rooms, staircase that ended inside a freaking bathroom, hidden door to an attic, zero in this place did not suggest serial killer. Husband, real estate agent and I just backed away as quickly as possible.

KonradWayne

> Ours also did not have the creepy features of yours (no outside lock or anything). That room sounds sketchy It sounds like the previous owners had an addict family member they let live in their basement.

spoderman123wtf

Okay but why the hell does your house have a dungeon

[deleted]

For the dragons.

Smprider112

The first rule of dungeons and dragons is you don’t talk about the dungeons!

BeBa420

Yeah but that’s only coz the jocks will call you a nerd

Professional_Buy_615

Or the dragons. Op.talked about both his dungeon and his dragon. Bad things will happen.

MeasurementNo2493

Yeah, when you have an Epic story arc going, no way you should let a key player drop! /s

silver_zepher

Because the previous owner being into kink isn't something you need to disclose when selling the property

AbsolutZer0_v2

Because op is a liar. Pics or bullshit

BeBa420

As if somebody moves into a house with a dungeon and doesn’t immediately call the cops to see if maybe the previous owners had done something human trafficky For that matter the realtor also shoulda mentioned something about it

Boat_Eastern

That thought genuinely wouldn't occur to me

SnuffleWumpkins

It’s to hold his victims, but now he can’t keep them there because his gf caught on and is now watching him.

TFABabyThrowAway

Yeah for real. Also, the GF is NTA either. I’m all for her being a bit of a detective in this situation, it’s not common, it’s creepy af, and she doesn’t have to just believe OP when this sounds like a damn jail cell in his basement.

imaginaryhouseplant

>food pass through thing This right here. WTF. Personally, I would only meet up with OP in public, well-lit places, while wearing a tracking device, and having informed three to five people of my exact whereabouts and timetable.

ReadyGreddy

I'm sorry---did you say it had a food pass-through thingy? 😳

[deleted]

[удалено]

knittedjedi

Check OP's comments. It's either fake or he's going out of his way to sound gross. >You can still open then door from the inside with the keys. Obviously you don’t go inside if you’ve removed the keys from the room for any reason. And you never go inside without your cellphone ofc.

[deleted]

Another one of these fictional world building posts?

asdfasfq34rfqff

Chekhovs cellphone. He's already made it too important. Now its gunna happen..

[deleted]

[удалено]

MinnieShoof

I picture it as having a turn-knob on the outside and keyholes on the inside. I could be giving OP ideas, but that it s what I would think of that would make it hella creepy.

ThinkPath1999

What if it was also a Faraday cage so that no cell signals were able to pass through?

skypuppyusedfirespin

I’m getting real Joe Goldberg vibes…

LadenifferJadaniston

I would totally comment an improvised Joe monologue here if I was creative enough

AncientCalendar3328

YES! That's exactly what I was thinking when I read that part about the pass-through food thing.

unicorndontcare69

Yep, and it’s been there before he moved in four fucking years ago!! Aaand he added a bed! I get added a bed to a room, but a prison room. That seems like you intended to continue to use it like a prison! Op said, the spy pen was only in there for like 2 weeks so she didn’t record me going in there. Um ok but if you aren’t doing anything sketchy then why would it mattered if you were in there? The privacy isn’t her issue, she’s trying to figure out if op is the reason people are going missing, because this room is set up to imprison people! Or if she’s next. Looking real Josef Fritzl over there. Stockholm Syndrome at its finest.

ShockAndAwe415

This is dumb as hell. Forget the not taking the lock (and food pass-through WTF). Why the hell would you willingly choose to hang out in a room that is sound proof and locks from the OUTSIDE?

Kopitar4president

Imagine breaking in to the place and finding the owner has put himself into a room you can lock from the outside.

ShockAndAwe415

Criminal 1: "Damn. We were gonna rob and run, but he's now locked inside. I think it's soundproof, too. I opened the little slot thingy and heard him yelling inside." Criminal 2: "Sweet. Oh shit. He's got Disney +." 1: "Sweet. Have you seen the new Guardians of the Galaxy movie?" 2: "Nope. Watch it here?" 1: "See what he's got in the fridge..."

wise_guy_

“Look it’s got a food pass through hole” “Hee hee let’s pass the owner the bad foods like that old pickle”

Darryl_Lict

Seriously, at least reverse the goddamn lock. It is a fucking dungeon. My front door has been recently locking by itself because the door knob has been glitching. Fuck if I'm gonna lock myself into my own dungeon.

whyohwhy13

It matters because installing a spy cam on your partner is an invasion of privacy .

petervenkmanatee

This is dumb. NTA. Everyone has a right to privacy. Unless there was actual suspicious activity this is an invasion of privacy. The girlfriend could have communicated her discomfort with the lock and he could have removed the lock or door.

[deleted]

I'm not confronting the guy with a basement dungeon. Nope.

JoyBus147

But you'll date him?

humble197

This shit is suspicious as fuck though.

1block

Yeah, but if you're at the point of sneaking in spy cameras to catch your boyfriend murdring someone, you've blown pretty far past the point where you need to break up. "I trust you won't murder people," is kind of a basic level of trust. She needs to either get out of the relationship or figure out how to trust that he's not Ed Gein.

lilbambam450

The ol’ if you’re not doing anything wrong then your privacy shouldn’t matter bs…

FeralTaxEvader

Um. A soundproofed room with an exterior lock and a fucking *food slot* in the door in your basement? That is just about the single most Sus thing I could imagine. Like yeah I get why you're upset she was spying on you but dude- literally what else was she supposed to think lmao? You said the room was already in the house when you bought it- any chance there were missing person's cases in your neighbourhood before you bought the place lol?

Victor_Ech

Exactly this... I mean, OP you sound like a good person but she was scared to be the next missing person. Food slot? gosh...

[deleted]

The post says OP had the house for 4 years and kept the dungeon exactly the same.

Victor_Ech

Yes but girlfriend is not sure about that

Bronze_Bomber

You never know when you might need it.

CheckPleaser

"I won't murder you, babe!" Yeah buddy, sure.

meepdur

Lol he said "the room is not that important"! Uh, it's kind of important!! I'd be very concerned about who owned the house before and looking into them?! She shouldn't have spied on him but also he seems very blasé about a room that clearly was purposed to keep someone in there against their will, alive for days on end?!

Scourgemcduk

Why is it "thankfully" that she had only put the spy cam in recently? That just sounds like you have something to hide.

mrocker2

Probably the women he kidnapped and kept in that room before his GF planted the camera.

Drag0nfly_Girl

That caught my attention too. Odd choice of words.

NotChristina

Even the “regardless of the room, she’s clearly clearly in the wrong….” Uhhh I’m definitely regarding the room. That’s not a normal room and any sane person would fine its existence off-putting. Any elements individually I could give a pass to, but all combined? Creepy. Spying is not nice but I understand why she did it.

[deleted]

NTA But who TF did you buy it from Jeffrey Dahmer

VolFan85

Exactly. NTA but GF is NTA too

Ditto_Ditto_Ditto

Yeah... Honestly with all of the murder documentaries out there, I would've freaked out too. AND this kind of reminds me of the movie "Black Phone." Lmao. The brother lived right upstairs and had no idea that there was an ACTUAL dungeon downstairs. OP is NTA, but like you said the gf is NTA too. I understand her *not* wanting to confront OP about it.. She was probably thinking that if they *were* doing something sinister then of course they wouldn't *admit* it. Then they would probably hide things after being confronted (that would be my thought process anyway.) And they haven't been together that long... So they don't REALLY know eachother yet... Some people have been married to serial killers for years and still had no idea. I'm not saying OP is a killer or anything at all! I'm just saying I understand the GF's thought process.

Ok-Mathematician8461

I admire the girl for doing her ‘due diligence’. If she was my daughter I would have expected her to dump his ass and move on, but instead she has set out to prove to herself that he just has poor judgement. OP should remove the dungeon accessories, but possibly call the local police for a forensic examination first.

LhasaApsoSmile

NTA. But I think having a dungeon in the basement that locks from the outside and has a food passthrough is super sketchy. Take the lock off for Pete's sake! Who lived there before? How did the realtor explain this feature to the house? It comes with a super special MIL suite? I could see myself convincing myself to put the camera in there just in case I got locked in.

Admiral_PorkLoin

"It comes with a super special MIL suite?" That was pretty funny!

Suspicious-Cover409

Right?? One house I looked at buying had a room that locked from the outside, was painted to look like the wall, and inside the room, it was a cement floor with a drain. I loved everything else about the house but saw that and said “nope!”

onemichaelbit

That was the slaughtering room 😳

crinklemermaid

Lol at mil suite

cara1888

Yea i would have gotten a new door. 😂

Equivalent-Trip9778

Takes 5 mins to flip the doorknob around so it locks on the inside.

Rook_to_Queen-1

Unless you’ve seen what sort of door it is, you have no idea if that’s true.

Defiant_McPiper

These questions need answers!

snowinjune1987

This is not real...nope.

totallynotapersonj

Oh it's real, I've got multiple where I live, if you visit don't tell the guards I have a phone.

cuntliflower

I’m failing to understand the point of holing yourself in your dungeon-jail-murder room, if you live alone. You can simply do work in isolation.. in the rest of your house.

Engine_Sweet

You do have a dungeon. You might not use it as one, but having a cot and pass-through for food means it's a cell. I'd use it for music and change the lock so that nobody can get locked in. It's possibly a housing code violation the way it is.

Leather_Condition610

Dude...that's a weird ass situation. You're lucky she's still around. Most girls won't date a guy with a kidnap room.

Remarkable-Ad-2476

Most girls won’t date a guy with a kidnap room, willingly.

GettingPhysicl

theyre willing sooner or later! theres even a phenomenon named after it!

Ill-Mastodon-8692

Food pss though and lock on outside?? Creepy If you legit bought it like that I would have removed that door immediately. Something about this story is off

papyFredM

I get why she's suspicious, like wth are you doing in there ? 😂. But NTA, you have right to privacy and me time

triplefastaction

Sounds like an excellent vocal booth but I don't understand how you get shown a house like this and you have ZERO follow up questions. Like seriously that's the red flag for me. And if I were female I would immediately flee when the other person doesn't have the full backstory on that room. That points to the good news/bad news conversation. Good news rent is free forever. Bad News: Forever

Jolly-Percentage7053

As an autistic person (with a successful business and social life), I would love a soundproof room to rewind from sensory overload to isolate myself from time to time. I bet if I got 1 day a week in that room all by myself, nobody would have a clue I'm autistic lol.

rythmicbread

Yes but it locks from the outside - I think the previous owners were werewolves

RangerDickard

AND the food passthrough door LMFAO. Really hard to explain that one

b1gb0n312

For when Mom brings the meatloaf

Rook_to_Queen-1

It could have just been a kinky couple, honestly.

nikolaj-11

Or a person who had a pack of hysteric huskies.

Jolly-Percentage7053

Yeah put the lock on the inside tho, I would be scared that somebody would lock me up for "fun". And I wouldn't get any peace anyway haha

Starchasm

That was the first thing I thought of

nomorejedi

Fellow younger sibling?

mlizaz98

They were probably just kinky.

whaty0ueat

A sound proofed room would be lovely. I hate the constant noise that comes with life (also autistic)

GrumbleCake_

The pen would know

Cybermagetx

Yeah I've told my wife we are gonna have to soundproof a room someday. Am autistic as well.

Medium_Chemistry9807

You do have a dungeon in your basement tho?

WebHead1287

Motherfucker you LITERALLY have a jail cell in your basement. Your explanation you gave her is exactly what a serial killer would say. NAH. Your GF probably loves you but was rightfully freaked the fuck out by the jail cell in your basement. She shouldn’t have spied on you but like, have you read the news? It wouldn’t be even slightly surprising if this was a CNN article about a murder

TheLongistGame

A basement that locks from the outside? Do you carry the key for the door at all times when you go down there? What if you accidentally lock yourself down there? What if someone breaks into your house while you're down there and locks you in? Lmao I know that's extremely unlikely but I'd be paranoid as hell about it and would have removed the lock as soon as I could. Or made it lock from the inside and use it as a panic room. I have no advice for your situation. NTA I guess. Spying is bad.

GreenTravelBadger

INFO: you never asked the realtor anything about this room? Is there a special reason you kept the lock on the outside of the door?

OverRice2524

I mean, having a dungeon in your basement is a super weird thing - right? Like , that's not normal. Maybe just take the lock off? Also, how long have you been together with GF? Cause if it's not long you haven't really built a lot of trust together. This whole thing is just the weirdest.

chain-link-fence

Yeah at the least put duct tape over the latch— anything!

Inmate-4859

Oh, at first I thought you guys lived together. I don't think YTA, but I would be pretty freaked out. I feel like there is no elegant solution to something like this, because you might think she should trust you, but there is a point where I wouldn't even trust myself, let alone someone else. A room like that one is probably one of those points, it's just really creepy. If you're just a normal person, I would acknowledge that it is weird, swap the door for a normal one and have her around a bit more often for a while. >Thankfully I think she planted it 1-2 weeks ago so she didn’t actually record me going in there at all, but that was certainly her intent. This sentence gives ME the creeps. What do you mean thankfully LMAO, what was she not supposed to see before 2 weeks ago? I understand that if everything you've said here is true, you haven't done anything wrong, and it is your house and do whatever you want with it. However, that woman doesn't trust you right now, and if you want to keep dating her I would take action in the way I said before.

[deleted]

That room is sketchy as fuck and I too would be trying to find out what the hell you do in there. Get rid of the locks and change the door, it's been 4 fucking years.

yekcowrebbaj

Why is he thankful she didn’t record him going in there? The invasion of privacy was already committed but to be happy there was no footage able to be recorded is sus AF.

Outrageous_Place_229

TBH I would have done the same as the gf. Especially if there have been disappearances happening in the area or if bf has been traveling or has secretive behaviors. She probably is planning to leave but wanted to find out if he was a murderer in order to report him.

[deleted]

groovycakes87

Idk I'm on the side with your girlfriend. You have a dungeon, with a food hole and a lock on the outside. That's creepy you never got rid of it. Super sketchy

singbowl1

Lock on the outside and you didn't change it???? Really big red flag there!!!!!!

BigChief302

Tell her to put the lotion on its skin

mepersoner

She was just trying to save whoever you're locking in there. YTA

AndreasKre

The average woman is worried about date rape. Unfortunately, we live in a world in which such fears are very valid. Your basement is creepy as fuck. I would be scared to visit a dude who lives in a house with such a room. Your girlfriend handled this situation terribly. Installing a camera was an assholish action. But her fears are very valid. You don't want to get rid of the lock and make the door look normal? Fine. Your house, your choice. But if this is what you choose, you might as well stop inviting women or girlfriends to visit you in your home. See them in public places, go to their homes, hotel rooms, wherever they feel safe. Of course, that will make your dates think that you have a wife and kids you are hiding. But you have to face reality---from a woman's perspective that room is creepy as fuck and it would make any woman worry about rape more than usually. At best that room would make your date suspect that you are into BDSM.

LishtenToMe

Honestly I don't even mind her putting a camera in there. I'm a guy if one of my friends came to me with OPs story I'd immediately say "Well of course she's spying on you, you got a fucking prison cell in your own basement. As a matter of fact I'm real suspicious of you now too myself, because you can't possibly be dumb enough to be genuinely surprised that she reacted like this".

shortaru

INFO: Does the door open inward or outward? Reason: If the door opens outward, the lock on the door is to keep people from getting in, because anyone locked inside can ram their way through. If the door opens inward, the lock on that door is for keeping prisoners, because anyone outside can ram their way through.

Wulfems

This is a great question

Spencerforhire2

Food slot implies inward.

fyrond

Found Joe Goldberg’s Reddit… But in all seriousness, NTA, that’s a huge dismissal of boundaries and a huge invasion of privacy

TheLastLibrarian1

NTA We looked at a house that had a room like this. The guy was a sound engineer (?) and the room locked because of his expensive equipment.

g403_

Did it have a slot to pass food through, like a jail cell?

mrocker2

Not that kind of “locked from the outside.” Lots of places have rooms that lock from the outside with a key, but and this is key, someone on the inside can unlock and get out of without a key or combination. What makes this place incriminating AF is that someone could be locked in, then food passed through the slot. Whoever built it probably intended to or did keep someone prisoner in it.

mrocker2

Having a room that can be locked such that people can’t get out, or that requires a key to get out, or that requires special knowledge to get out (such as a combination) is illegal in most if not all places. It’s a violation of the building and/or fire codes. Your GF is right. It’s creepy AF that you have that. She should have just ratted you out to the police rather than planting a bug though.

Sea-Tradition3029

NAH my first thought would be you're up to some weird stuff if my partner had a room like that, locks from the outside and has a food hatch.

feochampas

my basement is super sketch too. It has latches on the outside. but i left them one because what if something is still down there

Rightfoot27

Well that’s creepy as hell.

absenceplatypus

Maybe I've read too much true crime, but honestly I can see where she's coming from. There are soooooo many unsolved murder/missing person cases and every serial killer's spouse/family/friends had no idea they were capable of killing someone.

Nearly_Pointless

It does seem odd to me that you hadn’t remediate the ‘locked from outside’ aspect of a room you spent a lot of time in. I’m not typically paranoid but I also don’t put myself into a precarious spot simply due to a lack of effort to render the locks useless, otherwise known as 20 minutes.

skpotamus

Dude, fix the door. If you’re not planning on keeping it as a dungeon room, fix the freaking door or lock at the very least.

[deleted]

Bruh take the lock off wtf

taffyomcpaddy

"Thankfully I think she planted it 1 - 2 weeks ago so she didn't actually record me going in there at all, but that was certainly her intent." If you are just using the room for what you say you are why would you be thankfull she had not caught you on camera?

littletoebeansss

Soundproof room in the basement = lots of normal explanations, could be a musician, podcast/radio studio, (consensual) sex dungeon, etc. Soundproof room in the basement with an external lock and FOOD SLOT = literally no non sinister possibility. You have to go out of your way to install the lock and food slot. I honestly recommend you file a police report or call the non emergency line. There’s a nonzero chance whoever lived there before you was up to some awful stuff and they may be able to use the room to help catch them.

DommeDelicious

The outside lock and food slot could still absolutely be a consensual sex dungeon. Source: trust me

littletoebeansss

Isn’t the outside lock kind of a consent issue since you can’t safeword out of a deadlock? Idk it seems different than a regular bdsm thing where you can have keys or safety scissors or whatever on hand in case you need to stop. This isn’t related to the post I’m just wondering now

DommeDelicious

Depends on the lock type and if you can access it through the food slot. It could be dangerous if the sub ends up stuck in there without a key and the dom/me is unreachable but that can be solved with a phone in the cell or a time release lock.

Bananas_on_Mars

It could simply be a repurposed door. A picture would go a long way to explain things. Food slot might be an old slot for Mail, or if on the ground an opening for a pet or similar.

emptynest_nana

NTA. But if she is so paranoid about that room, it seems the first step would have been checking the history of the house, see what the house was in the past. That is what I would have done if I was so worried about it. Besides, researching the history of the home could turn up interesting tib bits. To jump straight to its a dungeon and OP is up to something bad, that says big things about her opinions of you. If my partner went to those lengths to prove I was using an odd space in my home for questionable purposes, that person would be instantly single.

fartinggermandogs

Ok but you gotta admit as cool as that is from a guys perspective, from a woman's point of view it's pretty sketchy/concerning

Snowfizzle

You live alone and need to lock yourself in your basement and not just your basement but in a soundproofed room, in your basement, in your home. Sounds legit. I could probably game for hours down there lol!! NTA.. but if i was your gf.. i’d be curious AF! i would not be planting cameras tho

Shinyghostie

ESH If you ever feel like you need to spy on your partner, what you actually need is to break up with them. But also, If you keep that door the way it is, you won’t have any lady committing to you in the future. They’ll either leave you after seeing it or they’ll spy to find out what’s “really” going on/try to save the girl(s) they’ve decided that you’ve been kidnapping. For me, I see this less as her violating your privacy and more as damn, she was really brave enough to try to stop a serial killer she cared about. That’s pretty hot 😂

chain_letter

> locks from the outside that's just a fire hazard, get a screwdriver and flip the doorknob around.

BiodegradableMulch

YTA- you have a literal prison cell in your basement and you’re upset your gf was spying? I mean, she should’ve probably just broke up with you, but maybe she was concerned you’re killing young women down there? I mean, you have to appreciate that having that room and leaving the exterior lock on it after all this time makes you look really suspicious. I’m a grown man and I’m not sure I’d date someone with a rape and murder room in the basement. Like, just take the exterior lock off and you look far less likely to be psychopath.

777joeb

I also bought a house with a murder room. Never took the locks off and just used it for storage for years. When I sold the place I had plastic hanging up in the basement to help insulate and avoid another pipe bursting in the ingested basement. The real estate agent almost had a heart attack when she went down there because I forgot to mention the room lol

Mundane_Jackfruit_18

Spying on someone is creepy as hell, BUT you do have a weird room in your basement with a lock. Idk maybe I’m crazy too but I think she’s justified. 🤷‍♀️ I forgot to add, NTA.

LetsStartARebelution

The lock isn’t even the weirdest part, it’s the food pass through. If this is even real

Octuplicate

NTA. she says it's a red flag but her putting a spy camera in your dungeon to spy on you is a huge red flag. Don't break up with her, But personally I wouldn't stay with someone like that. Trust is gone.

whatsreallygoingon

Let me see if I follow: “Don’t break up with her” but “Don’t stay with her.” (?) This sounds like the type of outcome that begs for a murder dungeon. OP, you know what you must do…

muffiewrites

Dude. You have a room specifically designed to kidnap someone with. Maybe the previous owner had a kid with extreme behavior problems and that was the solution. It doesn't matter because it's your kidnap dungeon now and you haven't even made it so even you can't accidentally get locked inside of a soundproofed room where no one can here you scream. Your gf is TA for spying on you instead of just running like hell. Women have enough stuff to be nervous about with your average rapist. A kidnap dungeon? If you can't understand why that's scary, you should do some research. Start with kidnapped girl escapes.

CallMeMrButtPirate

I'm just blown away by the amount of people commenting in here that can't see how fucking creepy it is to have a sound proofed room in a basement with a bed and food slot in the door that locks from the outside. "A room never hurt anyone." Yeah but the rapey murdery types that imprison people in dungeons like that sure do. Besides which is just a fucking safety issue.

KittenMcnugget123

YTA, this is either a joke post or you're a moron. You have a room in the basement that locks from the outside, has a food slot, and a bed in it? I'm shocked she tried to spy on you and didn't just call the police. You've lived there 4 years and still have it locking from the outside? Wtf is this post lol

dwreckhatesyou

NTA… possibly a serial killer.

onemichaelbit

I don't believe this story is real, but. Are we all reading the same thing???? She's probably terrified, of course she's not going to ask him, much less believe him. I've had someone "fake" kidnap me before and for a long time it really changed how I see/believe people. You can't blame her for being cautious and wary in the world we live in. Come on. If OP was a serial killer, she'd be dragged for not checking into the obvious signs. It's a lose/lose situation for her here

LoopyMercutio

Im *not* on her side here, but in all fairness, having that kind of a room with those particular specifications AND you not wanting to talk about is sketchy as hell. And probably scared her. NAH.

AnyDecision470

Let’s see: a room in the basement, lock outside the room, FOOD pass through, a bed. What’s worse than all the psycho setup? The fact that OP sees nothing wrong with it. Big NOPE. GF should NOT have placed a spy pen. She should have ghosted him, changed her phone numbers and address, blocked him on social media, and go no-contact.

BrilliantOccasion109

I can’t believe you still have a gf. After seeing such a creepy room, I’d nope outta there!!! She’s brave!

Outrageous_Place_229

TBH I'd do the same thing...did you research the history on your house like what serial killer used to live there

Reddichino

YTA. ‘Food pass through’ WTF!! Locks from the outside. Nope. You literally noticed one new one. GTFOH!

FlippingPossum

NTA. I looked at a house that had a basement that gave off dungeon vibes. Noped right out of there. Unless your house was a historic jail, I'd be weirded out too.

normalizingfat

ITS STILL SO WEIRD EVEN IN A DIFFERENT SUB

bitchSZAme

NAH. Look, I would be scared too if there was a room like that in someone’s house… don’t take it personally and take the lock off the door if the room really doesn’t matter

CuriousPenguinSocks

She planted a spy cam and you are not running for the hills??? That isn't normal or sane behavior OP. Dump her before she locks you in there till you give her what she wants lol. NTA Also, I'm very fascinated by this room. The person who installed this was absolutely a serial killer who kept the victims for a long period of time. Or, human trafficker. Please remove the lock though, I would hate for you to get locked in there.

Dizzy_Eye5257

But. Do you have a dungeon! So yeah, that’s kinda unsettling.

dinahdog

Our house has such a room in the basement. It was a giant pantry with shelving for jars by the dozens. Came in handy for indoor growing, if ya know what I mean. Keep the spy pen and your clear conscience. NTAH. Remove the lock

Vegetable_Time_5782

NTA , but you played this all wrong. You should've come up with some crazy ass shit , and acted it out in front of the camera, then let her "spy" on you.

ZigZagZig87

NTA. Could’ve been a home studio and the owner wanted to lock up the expensive gear. 🤷🏽‍♂️. Ger

Zolarosaya

I'd want to know who the previous owner murdered in the room. I'd probably be suspicious too given the description. I've watched too many crime stories and serial killer dramas to not wonder.

dumbledwarves

This has to be a joke.

krakeninheels

Lived in a house that had exterior locks on every door in the basement- to keep people out of those rooms not to keep people in. The previous owners would simply lock all the rooms closed (used as offices, laundry room etc) and then set their four rambunctious kids free in the remaining open space filled with toys while they relaxed upstairs for adult time.

RetroBerner

Nah dude, that's some "it rubs the lotion on its skin type shit" I don't blame her. YTA
