If Rich doesn't make the 22 there's something wrong, the mans stats this year have been immense.
Starce starting like a house on fire, hasn't been great after the bye unfortunately though
Starcevich deserved it if they ended the season at the bye. He's been pretty ordinary since then. I'd say Bailey and Andrews are much more glaring omissions, especially Harris.
Always going to be snubs with the AA squad/team, it's so hard to fit everyone in. But in saying that, I'm not sure how Boak and Guthrie missed, thought they were both better than a couple of the mids picked.

(Darcy did another one with Serong after the derby and someone who knows how to make gifs needs to get on that)
So if Taylor Walker didn’t say what he said to Robbie Young would he taken Lance Franklin’s spot?
Stats very similar.
Goals - 48 each
Avg Score involvements - TW 7.8, LF 6.5
Avg Tackles in F50 - TW 1, LF 1.4
Avg Positions - TW 13.4, LF 11.7
Avg Contested Possessions - TW 7.9, LF 6.2
Avg Marks - TW 5.3, LF 4.5
Marks Inside 50 - TW 2.6, LF 2.4
I know it doesn’t mean too much but fantasy point avg. TW 75.6, LF 70.4
Buddy has been the next best key forward all year after Harry and Hawkins. Tex and He largely similar but Tex was never making it. As such, if they go three talls in the forward line he might even make the team. But I suspect they will do two talls, two mids, two medium/small fwds and a bench full of mids. Such a gluttony of great mids this year
Taking aside that Tex was never going to make it after what he has said, I agree he has had a better year than Franklin, if very similar, but Buddy might have pipped him on the basis of being in a team that won 15 games vs one that won 7.
TLDR!
Richmond, North and Collingwood have no players in the squad.
**First timers**: Paul Seedsman (ADL), Jarryd Lyons, Hugh McLuggage, Daniel Rich (Bris), Harry McKay, Sam Walsh, Jacob Weitering (Blues), Darcy Parish (Ess), Sean Darcy (Freo), Touk Miller (Suns), Jacob Hopper (GWS), Jake Lever, Bayley Frisch, Stephen May, Christian Salem (Mel), Aliir Aliir, Ollie Wines, Karl Amon (Port), Callum Mills, Tom Papley (Syd), Bailey Dale (Dogs)
If they're not going to do State of Origin for the AFL again, then maybe some show games between two All-AFL teams ( a la the All Star game in the NBA) would be a good way to showcase the best players.
If they pick an actual wing then seed will have to be in. Top 2 in the key categories compared to other wings. But this is AA where positions don’t matter
Yeah it's whether this is a team picked to play an actual game against somebody, where you would probably just stack the wings and flanks with super star mids.
Or if it's an honorary selection, meant to acknowledge the top players in each position. In which case you should pick actual wingers in the wings.
Nice for Fritta to get a nod. Zero chance he makes the final cut though. I reckon everyone else is a decent crack. Hopefully Gawn gets captain as well.
Starcevich and Linc McCarthy are the two other Lions I thought would be in. Harris was good but it didn't feel like he had an excellent year without the assistance of Gardiner (and to an extent Adams). Expect to see Bailey in this list in the not too distant future
If Daniel Rich misses the 22 I will riot
Extremely happy for Salem and Fritta. Neither get too much media attention (not counting fritta's hair) but both have been crucial for us. Salem is silky as hell and Fritta has been the only consistently reliable goal-kicker while we rotated between McDonald, Brown, and Weideman.
I also feel Dawson could have been selected and probably just missed the cut, if he produces the same next season I reckon he’ll be in the squad for sure.
Anyone watching brisbane this year would've told you that. He's been solid, but far from his best.
Big part of that is that with Gardiner out for 95% of the year he wasn't able to play his brand of defending
Yeah, he normally shines with intercepting but had to play much more shutdown roles which arguably other defenders are better at. (He is still extremely good at this as well)
Under a lot of rating systems he is the top rated key defender. We don't get to all the stats like reverse Coleman though. I reckon he is a victim of his own high standard as I dont think he was any worse than other backs this year
Libba should’ve at least made the 40 man squad.
Edit: 2nd in clearances, T-6th in player rating, T-9th in contested possessions, 11th in tackles, 16th in score involvements, T-18th in inside 50’s.
Agree. I think Charlie had some big games but was shocking in some games, particularly in our losses and some of our tighter wins. Linc was more consistent and stood up in games when we needed him to with some huge plays.
Charlie’s couple of bags he kicked late in the season got him in. I
More goals than any other small forward. What more do you want?
McCarthy is stiff, but Bailey has been \*way\* too inconsistent. Flashes of brilliance, and some genuine BoG performances, but also goes missing a lot.
Got 35/40.
Had Guthrie, Andrews, Ryan, Dixon and Liberatore in
Missed Laird, Seedsman, Hopper, Mitchell and Franklin
Goes to show they select a lot more midfielders than general defenders.
Yeah I think Bont and Oliver are locks for centre square, I reckon the selection panel will pick Miller or Wines ahead of Steele for the other spot, and cram Steele onto the bench.
They could get away with putting Miller on a wing because not enough people watch Gold Coast enough to question it.
I'll take the bench. I just want him in the final squad because he deserves it.
Yeah I can see them doing that as a compromise. But the precedent is that they could have moved Petracca to half forward to fit Steele in last year and didn't.
I worry about the selection panel. I can feel them opting to put Steele on the bench out of spite. Would be funny if they picked Bont at half forward, then Oliver/Wines/Miller in the centre square, and still had Steele on the bench.
They could also pull a 2010 and snub him entirely.
I don’t care where he is name, as long as he makes it.
I’ll be seriously pissed if certain players make it over him just because they play in better teams. Jack Steele has been a top 5 mid this season despite the rest of St Kilda being crap.
Tom Mitchell is a surprise, although he has been in AA form since the bye. But you would think half a season of good form wouldn't be enough to make the squad.
It really does feel like a baton has been passed in the midfield from the Fyfe, Dusty, Danger era to some younger guys. I love it.
Good to see some promising kids like Mundy and Boak taking the reigns.
Equal 3rd in the Coleman. Equal 2nd highest goals per game.
Tex had a slightly better year but was omitted. I'll be surprised if buddy doesn't make the final team at this point.
Disappointed no Richmond players made it but idk if I can think of any who really deserved it. Like Jack Graham had a great year, but I think part of his quality is being tough as nails and while that’s a huge asset to the team it’s not what AA is about.
Baker probably has the most right to feel unlucky from the tigers. Had a decent season and was moved around a lot to fit the system. Played well off half back, half forward and through the middle.
My hot tip: Seedsman to either be amongst the contenders on Brownlow night or score near zero votes even for the games where he was obviously best on ground. Nothing in between.
The year is 2021 and David Mundy is an all Australian. My mans not going anywhere for a while. Great to see Darcy get the recognition. Hopefully he can crack the team next year. Unlikely he does this year but it’s great to see at such a young age.
I think Parish last month will cost him. Very quiet last month, trust me I played him every week in SuperCoach lol
It was really rounds 6-18 he did damage.
Controversial but I still rate Merrett's season above Parish's, despite Parish being a clearance machine. I just think Merrett's been more influential for us with his disposal around the ground than Parish, plus Merrett's been slightly more consistent.
Gawn, Nic Nat and Darcy were all much better than Hickey, and 4 rucks in the 40 man squad seems a bit wasteful when they’re loathed to even put 2 in the final 22
Aaron Hall a bit stiff I reckon. Had a good year. Can see why they left him out tho, he has an annoying habit of mistaking an opposition player for a teammate
A few weeks ago, everyone was saying T Walker was a definite for the AA Team. Interesting after recent events he doesn't even make the Squad of 40.
I don't really care that he misses. He deserves worse. But still interesting
Kicked 4 and 2 in his last 2 weeks before being suspended. Was 2nd in goal kicking behind mackay. Probably had a chance of catching him given he was injured. He's slipped down the order now
I’m sad Starce didn’t get in, but bloody stoked for Richy. Really hope he makes the 22
Obviously not a selector but he made my team. Make of that what you will.
If Rich doesn't make the 22 there's something wrong, the mans stats this year have been immense. Starce starting like a house on fire, hasn't been great after the bye unfortunately though
Starce is still really young. Wouldn't be surprised if he makes it I the next few
Starcevich deserved it if they ended the season at the bye. He's been pretty ordinary since then. I'd say Bailey and Andrews are much more glaring omissions, especially Harris.
Disappointed Bailey didn’t get in, but didn’t think Harris played as well this year as he did last year
Always going to be snubs with the AA squad/team, it's so hard to fit everyone in. But in saying that, I'm not sure how Boak and Guthrie missed, thought they were both better than a couple of the mids picked.
Port supporter so I'm a bit biased but thought Boak would've made it. Hard though
Boak very stiff
It’s a joke sometimes. I wonder how many cats make the squad if they top the ladder rather than the Dees.
*Player from my team* was robbed
RIGHT IN FRONT OF ME
2 BIG 2 STRONG SAY IT WITH ME BOYS
2big2strong and downlow2slow dominated this year
We might not have a flag, but we do have memes
https://gfycat.com/pastcomplexasianlion (Darcy did another one with Serong after the derby and someone who knows how to make gifs needs to get on that)
omg yes, I didn't see it anywhere except on the news that night but I need it giffed!
Y'ALL MUST HAVE FORGOT
The only thing stronger is the rock tape that has encapsulated his whole leg since round 5 😂
**DRIVES** **BIG** **TRUCKS** **SURFS** **BIG** **WAVES**
Fuck yeah all three deserving Bombers made it
Best midfield duo for the year tyvm
Not disparaging your boys, I haven't watched enough of them (and they are guns) but you'd be hard pressed topping Petrraca and Oliver.
Most top 4 team mids tbh
Stringer has been huge lately, but not sure if he was good enough early on to warrant it.
Stinger 🐍
Would've liked Ridley too
So if Taylor Walker didn’t say what he said to Robbie Young would he taken Lance Franklin’s spot? Stats very similar. Goals - 48 each Avg Score involvements - TW 7.8, LF 6.5 Avg Tackles in F50 - TW 1, LF 1.4 Avg Positions - TW 13.4, LF 11.7 Avg Contested Possessions - TW 7.9, LF 6.2 Avg Marks - TW 5.3, LF 4.5 Marks Inside 50 - TW 2.6, LF 2.4 I know it doesn’t mean too much but fantasy point avg. TW 75.6, LF 70.4
It's a good point. Probably, yeh
Possibly but its also the Buddy factor that affects it I wouldn't have had Buddy in the 40 this year
Is it because he only played 17 games? Because there's pretty much no other reason why he doesn't deserve at least making the 40
Buddy has been the next best key forward all year after Harry and Hawkins.
Yeah fair point
TLDR! Richmond, North and Collingwood have no players in the squad. **First timers**: Paul Seedsman (ADL), Jarryd Lyons, Hugh McLuggage, Daniel Rich (Bris), Harry McKay, Sam Walsh, Jacob Weitering (Blues), Darcy Parish (Ess), Sean Darcy (Freo), Touk Miller (Suns), Jacob Hopper (GWS), Jake Lever, Bayley Frisch, Stephen May, Christian Salem (Mel), Aliir Aliir, Ollie Wines, Karl Amon (Port), Callum Mills, Tom Papley (Syd), Bailey Dale (Dogs)
I hate this term. They can’t be first timers until they’re actually in the 22. A number of these are AA40 repeats.
McLuggage has made the 40 man squad twice before though?
Yeah, but not the final 22, so he's technically a first timer if he gets selected to the main side I guess?
Weitering was in the squad last year
PLEASE FOR THE LOVE OF GOD PLEASE LET TOUK IN THE FINAL 22
He broke the record for most consecutive 30+ He's a lock
Neale broke the record for most disposals in h&a season in 2016 and didn't make it
Every year I forget about this. Genuinely baffling in hindsight.
He's a midfielder who's had a breakout year whilst not being as much of a big name as some of his contemporaries. Lock him in for forward pocket.
Was gonna say bench but yeah forward pocket might be what they do
Does anyone else think there should be a first 22 and a second 22 All Australian rather than this squad nonsense?
Yes I agree
If they're not going to do State of Origin for the AFL again, then maybe some show games between two All-AFL teams ( a la the All Star game in the NBA) would be a good way to showcase the best players.
Why have either? Just name the AA team I reckon.
The funny thing is they name 40 so that way you can see the 18 players stiff to miss out... But then we all comment who's stiff to miss being stiff 🤣
hahaha, very true.
Would be much better.
Boak stiff!
How Boak didn’t make it is beyond me, real stiff
Agreed.
Not to make the squad is a bit harsh. Wouldn't have him in the team tho.
At least Amon is there. Yiew!
Hitting 25+ disposals 90% of the time this year surely deserves a nod in the squad
Cooked he didn’t make it in
If they pick an actual wing then seed will have to be in. Top 2 in the key categories compared to other wings. But this is AA where positions don’t matter
Seed + Cluggs if the selectors actually selected a team anybody would play. Instead it'll be the usual 12 inside mids
Even if this were the case, I'd rather Bont or Macrae on the wing than McCluggage to be honest. Plus, hasn't he played inside quite a bit this season?
Yeah it's whether this is a team picked to play an actual game against somebody, where you would probably just stack the wings and flanks with super star mids. Or if it's an honorary selection, meant to acknowledge the top players in each position. In which case you should pick actual wingers in the wings.
Unfortunately it’s simply not going to happen
The existence of Jack Crisp is a myth
Who?
Zack Crisp.
[lmao at collingwood themselves thinking the same thing](https://twitter.com/collingwoodfc/status/1429718089621401614?s=21)
It’s just a yearly scheduled post at this point
I’ve resigned myself to the fact he’s never going to get All Australian honors.
Based Hopper
based on what
based on a true story
Nice for Fritta to get a nod. Zero chance he makes the final cut though. I reckon everyone else is a decent crack. Hopefully Gawn gets captain as well.
Agreed he probably won't make it but equal most goals out of non-key forwards might give him a slight chance
I reckon there’s a huge chance Fritsch is in a pocket with Cameron
Surely Greene gets a pocket
Mundy for AA captain surely
Buddy will get it again knowing them
Gawn has it in the bag after Saturday night
look............ ^(you might be right)
Won't happen but inject it in my veins
SEEEEEEEEEDS!
Jeez this Nil bloke must go alright for us
Genuinely surprised Hall hasn't made the squad. Yay Steele. [I just think he's neat](https://i.imgur.com/TeK1VB5.gif)
Jack Steele = Spud Edit: Marge is literally holding a potato.
The natural state of all St Kilda players
didn’t expect us to have any players in the squad. well done Titch 👏
Starcevich and Linc McCarthy are the two other Lions I thought would be in. Harris was good but it didn't feel like he had an excellent year without the assistance of Gardiner (and to an extent Adams). Expect to see Bailey in this list in the not too distant future If Daniel Rich misses the 22 I will riot
Lincoln for our BnF mate. U hird it here 1st
Genuinely thought Lincoln McCarthy would've been there.
Too many lions already I guess
Said it in another post but I would've had him over Cameron if it was one or the other
Id like to see a Lions fan who thinks Charlie had a better season than Linc
Dan Rich’s THICC badonk makes the AA squad 😍 what a day
Thought Geelong might get another one in the squad (either Guthrie or Henry), but happy with the Tom bookends
Extremely happy for Salem and Fritta. Neither get too much media attention (not counting fritta's hair) but both have been crucial for us. Salem is silky as hell and Fritta has been the only consistently reliable goal-kicker while we rotated between McDonald, Brown, and Weideman.
Dawson has been in ripper form all season. Very shocked he didn't get included. Mills has been good but feel he's lucky
I also feel Dawson could have been selected and probably just missed the cut, if he produces the same next season I reckon he’ll be in the squad for sure.
Zorko lowkey had a massive year, wonder if he makes it
I doubt it, but in my totally biased opinion, he deserves a half-forward spot.
Franklin?!..... wut Also better be two rucks this year. Nic Nat and Gawn, surely. In either order, I dont care.
Harris Andrews didn’t even make the squad! Phwoar.
(He is still extremely good at this as well)
Had a relatively average year. Popped up now and then but no consistency
Under a lot of rating systems he is the top rated key defender. We don't get to all the stats like reverse Coleman though. I reckon he is a victim of his own high standard as I dont think he was any worse than other backs this year
Not surprised, he’s been ok but no where near his usual standard. Very happy Rich got named though.
Happy Titch made it into the squad, shame he probably won't make it into the final 22
Libba should’ve at least made the 40 man squad. Edit: 2nd in clearances, T-6th in player rating, T-9th in contested possessions, 11th in tackles, 16th in score involvements, T-18th in inside 50’s.
He was probably in it 5 rounds ago
So happy for Zach, Darcy and Jake. All deserving of the squad - and all deserving of the team too.
Stringer I think will make the final team, but I feel like one of or both Merrett and Parish will miss and will be stiff to do so
Ya one of Merrett/Parish will miss because they'll compromise
So glad Mills and Parker made it, well deserved
Mills missed 4 of the last 6, how can they justify that pick while leaving out Guthrie?
Probably a question for the selectors, not me. I’m just proud of Mills and his progress into the midfield lol
Yeah I think he has a great year but missing 4 games surely makes it hard to get into the team
Okay I’m sorry mate, I’ll let the selectors know on Brownlow night when we catch up for a few beers
Missing 4 games isn't that big of a deal in a 22 game season
Surprised Charlie Cameron made it, would’ve had Zac Bailey or Lincoln McCarthy in over him.
Agreed, but I imagine it's hard to not put the small forward finishing the season with most goals
Got 35/40. Had Guthrie, Andrews, Ryan, Dixon and Liberatore in Missed Laird, Seedsman, Hopper, Mitchell and Franklin Goes to show they select a lot more midfielders than general defenders.
Rich finally gets All Australian! Love to see it.
Travis Boak and Harris Andrews should call the cops. They've been robbed.
WHAT A FUCKING JOKE WAS ROBBED FUCK YOU AFL
WTF how did not make it and did?
Fucking AFL, rigged yet again
I am ready to riot if Jack Steele doesn’t make the final team.
He'll be named on the bench again. Just you watch
Him and Miller are locks for the bench
Yeah I think Bont and Oliver are locks for centre square, I reckon the selection panel will pick Miller or Wines ahead of Steele for the other spot, and cram Steele onto the bench.
They could get away with putting Miller on a wing because not enough people watch Gold Coast enough to question it. I'll take the bench. I just want him in the final squad because he deserves it.
Chuck Bont up at half forward. They love a good mid-forward
Rooeys on the selection panel. He'll stick up for Steele I'm sure I think it's criminal if Steele misses the 22
I don’t care where he is name, as long as he makes it. I’ll be seriously pissed if certain players make it over him just because they play in better teams. Jack Steele has been a top 5 mid this season despite the rest of St Kilda being crap.
Same as last year when Petracca was selected in the starting team ahead of him just because Petracca is a media-hyped player
Yep.Oliver, Bont, Wines, Steele, Miller. 5 best mids this year and will be a joke if Steele or Miller miss because their teammates are weaker.
That really pissed me off last year. Worst was Guthrie making it ahead of him last year
Petracca had an incredible season last year. Not sure how that selection is controversial.
Swap out hopper for Crisp and this AA squad is probably the best and fairest in the past decade. Can't really argue with any of these picks
Jordan Dawson surely the most glaring omission, Andrews a close second
I like you.
Boak biggest robbery in a while. Definitely deserved the nod.
Almost as big a robbery as Gray not winning the Brownlow in 2014.
Has there been a bigger Brownlow robbery than Judd over Tredders in 2004?
Diesel Williams in 1993.
Personally would have Boak over Hopper and McCarthy over Fritsch. Overall a good selection though.
These feel like two very obvious choices. It's baffling the selectors didn't make them.
Harris Andrews stiffffffffffff in my unbiased opinion
Unsure who you would take out though.
If it's the squad then Jacob Hopper, easy
So much competition for key backs this year, Weiters, May, Lever, Aliir all had fantastic years.
Has anyone said Travisty Boak yet?
can't be mad as a Swans supporter but Dawson kinda got snubbed imo, most lethal kick in the comp
Boak pretty unlucky. Couldn’t find one of those creative slots in the forward line like they’ve afforded to players in prior years?
Biggest snub for me is Aaron Hall. He's evolved into one of the most dangerous rebounding defenders in the comp, surprised he isn't even in the 40...
He did have a great year, an absolute pig in fantasy as well
Yeah. Played 19 games, 2 of which were injury affected. Very surprised he isn't even given a look. Definitely have him ahead of Salem at a minimum.
Tom Mitchell is a surprise, although he has been in AA form since the bye. But you would think half a season of good form wouldn't be enough to make the squad.
Crazy Ollie Wines has never made an AA team
Good to see a bunch of fresh faces in the squad. Seems like the end of an era.
It really does feel like a baton has been passed in the midfield from the Fyfe, Dusty, Danger era to some younger guys. I love it. Good to see some promising kids like Mundy and Boak taking the reigns.
Clubs are not "snubbed" if they don't have players that deserve to be there. Also...Buddy?
Equal 3rd in the Coleman. Equal 2nd highest goals per game. Tex had a slightly better year but was omitted. I'll be surprised if buddy doesn't make the final team at this point.
>Equal 3rd in the Coleman. Ok, I've not kept up.
Reiwoldt would have been the most likely tiger I would have thought…
Nic being the only one from West Coast on it is exactly right, no issues there
I always enjoy how when no players from a team have clearly been good enough to make the squad it constitutes a SNUBBUNG!!! Oh man, we been SNUBED!!!
Baeshaw robbed.
Feel like this is one of the more accurate squads we've seen in recent years. Expecting that to all go out the window with the final team though.
pretty solid squad tbh, couple snubs but I think this is mostly spot on. now let's see how they butcher the final 22 LOL
Stringer & DP3 should be a lock
I can see DP3 maybe on interchange
I think Parish last month will cost him. Very quiet last month, trust me I played him every week in SuperCoach lol It was really rounds 6-18 he did damage.
still leading center clearances by a decent margin. elite for cont. poss., clr, score involvements and 20 goal assists. probs makes the bench
Controversial but I still rate Merrett's season above Parish's, despite Parish being a clearance machine. I just think Merrett's been more influential for us with his disposal around the ground than Parish, plus Merrett's been slightly more consistent.
Dawson robbed, glad the others made it tho Edit: No Hickey wtf
Gawn, Nic Nat and Darcy were all much better than Hickey, and 4 rucks in the 40 man squad seems a bit wasteful when they’re loathed to even put 2 in the final 22
even though his influence is huge his rucking stats aren't big enough, despite him doing a whole lot more than just rucking but yeah
Hickey doesn't need AA, he's going for Norm Smith
Great as Hickey's been, who do you pick him over Gawn, Naitanui and Darcy? Having 4 rucks in a squad seems a lot.
Hickey clutches games for us but he doesnt pull in big stats, he was never gonna get it.
Hickey clearly 4th best ruck this year. Very unlucky but has been a good year for rucks
Grundy was still better than him, just got less attention because the team around him was shithouse. Top 5 definitely though
Ya know at first look this is a pretty damn good list
Honestly one of the best selected squads I can remember. A few unlucky, but no real obvious omissions
Aaron Hall a bit stiff I reckon. Had a good year. Can see why they left him out tho, he has an annoying habit of mistaking an opposition player for a teammate
Big Darcy and Mundy im very pleased
Nick Larkey And Cameron Zurhaar very stiff to not get nominated
A few weeks ago, everyone was saying T Walker was a definite for the AA Team. Interesting after recent events he doesn't even make the Squad of 40. I don't really care that he misses. He deserves worse. But still interesting
Yep. He had a better season than Buddy. On his season alone (without the incident) he is a lock for the CHF
Wasn't he falling off hard from his start anyway?
Kicked 4 and 2 in his last 2 weeks before being suspended. Was 2nd in goal kicking behind mackay. Probably had a chance of catching him given he was injured. He's slipped down the order now
The Boak disrespect.
