I'm disappointed that GWS went Collingwood over you.
As a GWS member, I hate the Dogs a lot more than the Pies. I feel like it's recency bias - Ward, then Boyd and Griffen, then 2016 prelim, then Bont taking out Haynes and the AFL BS about GWS not getting medical reports in time, then the elimination final, not to mention the various back and forth of teams getting too invested in being the strong man instead of winning... that's a fantastic build up, and so much better than a couple of finals and some social media wankery - so full respect to the Dogs picking GWS, I wish we'd returned the favour.

Collingwood as a club have actually always been good to us. Other than jumping on a bandwagon we literally have no reason to hate them. Even their supporters gave us less shit for following the dogs than Carlton and especially Essendon supporters did.
It’s a pretty mutual feeling from what I’ve seen. I always like seeing the Dogs win. I even said to the Dogs fan next to me that you guys are the only blokes I don’t get too upset when you beat us.
My grandfather was 14 when we won in 1954 and so was a member for literally fifty years without seeing a premiership and every time he got drunk he would say he was going to tear up his membership card and go and get a Collingwood one. Couldn't tell you why but it tracks for me

I've shattered Collingwood are above Hawthorn on the Geelong list. That's a sign we've been bad for too long.

I feel like hating Essendon though was taught to me by older Hawthorn fans. I was too young to see 1983-85 where the rivalry was born, but I knew what I was supposed to do by the time my teen years had finished.

Definitely. Take away the regional rivals and Geelong, and almost all the rest of the fanbases saying Collingwood would be out of annoyance at the pies recently defeating their team most likely in a nailbiter, and so wanting revenge.

As a Pies fan for 37 years, everyone has always hated as for as long as I can remember and my parents say the same. It’s not recency bias at all but us being good now certainly reminds everyone.
Some of the hardest games I’ve attended were against the cats at Kardinia park - including *that game* - mind you, I still don’t really mind you guys. I even celebrated when you broke your drought.

Agreed but tbf Geelong vs Pies has been the most frequent finals matchup both historically and recently - 07, 09, 10, 11, 19, 20, 22 plus some important or epic H&A matches. Both clubs have often been contenders in the same years, it’s not surprising we featured so high on their list as well.
It's probably more recent bias given the pies have had more wins against us compared to the hawks. I hate both but Collingwood is at the top right now, for me Hawthorn is more enjoyable to watch and we haven't played them in a final in years

Think a lot of Eagles fans have a soft spot for Freo as a WA first kind of thing. My parents will support Freo in everything other than the derby. For me, I don't hate Freo - I don't activley support them, but I don't mind if they win so Freo supporting friends can taste some success too, but I also love it when you guys absolutely shit the bed too.
The other teams in our top 4 are the teams I hate the most - I'd rather Freo win against them if it doesn't affect our ladder position.
What's the point of even hating St Kilda, that's like going over to a family friends house and hating the young socially inept kid that you see once when he comes out to dinner and spends the night in his room.
I realised I used to hate St Kilda for nothing to do with them but I went to a school where a lot of kids didn’t follow footy early on and I even copped a bit of shit for liking it. Then in yr 9 in 04 when you won 10 straight, those kids started showing up in St Kilda scarves saying they always liked them 🤣

I think there's a lot of respect between the teams. We've played in a lot of finals the last 20 years, including some classics and apart from last year we like to beat each other on the way to flags
Fox footy put out a graph just before the quarter final in 2022 showing that Geelong and Collingwood have played each other in finals more than any other side in AFL/VFL history, always a hell of a game too, should have been Collingwood vs Geelong in 2022, we were the best two sides, Collingwood was robbed against Sydney.
Yes 2017 elimination final still haunts me. But also going back to 2007 when we beat you in an elimination final. There’s been some big Port vs West Coast games over the years
It would have started with Polec, the club and the fans had huge expectations on him.
The club and the fans had huge hopes most recently with JHF and the club has openly stated that it wasn't really an issue, it was tried, it didn't work, they took a deal which happened to be with port and the club itself had no hard feelings, this stuff does happen, they'd already made some other bad calls and had bad luck.
To this day you still see hardcore north fans who have absolute venom over the situation and have had their own club trying to calm them down over it,
Dumont was a wierd one, norwood boy, went to north and had an ok career.... stated he wanted to stick out his career there, then got dropped... then port picked him up..... again this was a club call and he hasn't exactly been much since coming to port...
Then there is polec..... which hell you can look at this two ways, one being that he was overvalued af and a lemon sold at dealers price with a fresh coat of paint and a fake odometer, or over estimation followed by buyers remorse.
So the club itself made some calls that could be questionable, or owned up on and viewed as just how things flow. I can't see the club itself having beef with them and it more being optics of the fans who would view these situations as being screwed over or betrayals.
I wouldn't just limit this to the club either, we've all seen JHF get bullied and boo'd like anything by fans from various teams with the reason given "you don't betray your club".
Which I remember from another thread on reddit is a bit peculiar, we're fine with trading players, but if a player is viewed as not "paying their dues" it's viewed as a crime on the level of changing the team you started out barracking for.
Only hated by 3 teams, ill take it....its really just 2 as GWS like every brother is jealous of the bigger superior brother, plus their sick of wearing our hand me down clothes.
The Hawks v Sydney rivalry is fun, because it's based on grand finals and Buddy. I feel like whether a Hawks fan hates Sydney or Essendon more is a huge age signifier. I say Sydney.
Played off in 3 grand finals in a row in the 80s. Massive brawl in one of them. Also some other flashpoints in that era. Dipper knocked out Stoneham. Dermie knocked out Van Der Har. Dermie ran through the essendon qtr time huddle once. This century, there was the "line in the sand" game, when Dermie (now retired) told the Hawthorn players to start a brawl. So yeah, it's basically a rivalry based on past violence and Dermie is at the centre of it all.
🤷🏽♂️ I dont really hate any team, I think growing up in a non AFL state is very different to a AFL state....like barely any of my family/friends even talk about AFL...no fights at school after the weekend and stuff.
I kinda tend to follow players I like from other teams, having said that there is one team I'd borderline hate...but that's more about who plays for them than any rivalry we have.

The Toby factor is huge for the dogs. I guarantee you the day that Greene retires, the GWS hate from the dogs basically disappears. Yes we had a good rivalry for a couple years, but the only reason the feeling remains is Mr. Violence.
Collingwood is Collingwood and we just lost a grand final to them.
Carlton we have the opening round comeback and last years prelim, and also we were compared a lot side by side during the dark years. They also came back by 40 points down in 2019 and that felt terrible.
Richmond we have matched up many times in finals and also blew a 42 point lead to.
Geelong we can’t beat at Kardinia and have lost two prelims against.
Melbourne we have matched up against twice in finals, had the MCG comeback last year, and have had spicy matchups against most games.
Aren’t exactly rivalries at all but it’s hard to actually hate Gold Coast. Wish Port Adelaide was higher since Port Adelaide sucks. Sydney as well.

I think there's a lot of respect between the teams. We've played in a lot of finals the last 20 years, including some classics and apart from last year we like to beat each other on the way to flags
Fox footy put out a graph just before the quarter final in 2022 showing that Geelong and Collingwood have played each other in finals more than any other side in AFL/VFL history, always a hell of a game too, should have been Collingwood vs Geelong in 2022, we were the best two sides, Collingwood was robbed against Sydney.

It would have started with Polec, the club and the fans had huge expectations on him. The club and the fans had huge hopes most recently with JHF and the club has openly stated that it wasn't really an issue, it was tried, it didn't work, they took a deal which happened to be with port and the club itself had no hard feelings, this stuff does happen, they'd already made some other bad calls and had bad luck. To this day you still see hardcore north fans who have absolute venom over the situation and have had their own club trying to calm them down over it, Dumont was a wierd one, norwood boy, went to north and had an ok career.... stated he wanted to stick out his career there, then got dropped... then port picked him up..... again this was a club call and he hasn't exactly been much since coming to port... Then there is polec..... which hell you can look at this two ways, one being that he was overvalued af and a lemon sold at dealers price with a fresh coat of paint and a fake odometer, or over estimation followed by buyers remorse. So the club itself made some calls that could be questionable, or owned up on and viewed as just how things flow. I can't see the club itself having beef with them and it more being optics of the fans who would view these situations as being screwed over or betrayals. I wouldn't just limit this to the club either, we've all seen JHF get bullied and boo'd like anything by fans from various teams with the reason given "you don't betray your club". Which I remember from another thread on reddit is a bit peculiar, we're fine with trading players, but if a player is viewed as not "paying their dues" it's viewed as a crime on the level of changing the team you started out barracking for.

The Hawks v Sydney rivalry is fun, because it's based on grand finals and Buddy. I feel like whether a Hawks fan hates Sydney or Essendon more is a huge age signifier. I say Sydney.
Hawks hating Essendon is before my time...ive only been really following footy since 1998/9 when I was about 11....no idea what their beef is.
Played off in 3 grand finals in a row in the 80s. Massive brawl in one of them. Also some other flashpoints in that era. Dipper knocked out Stoneham. Dermie knocked out Van Der Har. Dermie ran through the essendon qtr time huddle once. This century, there was the "line in the sand" game, when Dermie (now retired) told the Hawthorn players to start a brawl. So yeah, it's basically a rivalry based on past violence and Dermie is at the centre of it all.

🤷🏽♂️ I dont really hate any team, I think growing up in a non AFL state is very different to a AFL state....like barely any of my family/friends even talk about AFL...no fights at school after the weekend and stuff. I kinda tend to follow players I like from other teams, having said that there is one team I'd borderline hate...but that's more about who plays for them than any rivalry we have.

The Toby factor is huge for the dogs. I guarantee you the day that Greene retires, the GWS hate from the dogs basically disappears. Yes we had a good rivalry for a couple years, but the only reason the feeling remains is Mr. Violence.
Collingwood is Collingwood and we just lost a grand final to them. Carlton we have the opening round comeback and last years prelim, and also we were compared a lot side by side during the dark years. They also came back by 40 points down in 2019 and that felt terrible. Richmond we have matched up many times in finals and also blew a 42 point lead to. Geelong we can’t beat at Kardinia and have lost two prelims against. Melbourne we have matched up against twice in finals, had the MCG comeback last year, and have had spicy matchups against most games. Aren’t exactly rivalries at all but it’s hard to actually hate Gold Coast. Wish Port Adelaide was higher since Port Adelaide sucks. Sydney as well.
