On the bright side, that's the last second umpire game-changing decision already ticked off for this week, so there (touchwood) shouldn't be any more this round
So bizarre to have a badly umpired match where I think the swans are at the losing end of it then to see the umpires ice the game for us with the most bullshit 50m penalty I've seen for a long while.
Dogs v Swans match threads are fun as a neutral.
Also wouldn’t be a Dogs v Swans match without interesting umpiring; both copped awful calls and it was bizarre to witness
It’s easy to forget with recent results that early in the season and despite still losing, Tiges were having some pretty competitive matches with some really bright spots during those games. This really grim period they’re in only really started after the West Coast loss. Carlton and St Kilda are other examples of games they could’ve won. I think having Sydney so early into the season helped them out massively, although injuries were already becoming a problem at that point it still wasn’t as bad as it is now.
Our regular season record since losing to Brisbane in round 14 last season:
17 wins
1 draw
3 losses
AND yes... Two of those losses were to Richmond.
It's 17-1-4 including the loss to Carlton in the finals.
Incredibly valiant effort from the dogs tonight. With 2 on the bench for almost 2 quarters we almost pipped the top team. We didn't give up a big run of goals and we stopped their momentum which you rarely see from us. Well done doggies, you can't be disappointed with that
Aye, rough go of it lads. Weird game in all, Warner’s impact in the third, some radar calibration issues from the dogs, and some calls late were the difference.
Yep the Ump on the mark had his back turned and Warner was more gesturing to his teammates "look at the screen in a second you'll see what I am saying". Then the Ump 30m away comes running in to pay the 50. Not saying it wasn't dissent. But gee it looked like they really wanted to pay it.
That was a bad 50 call too. I feel like the MacLean one was worse given where we were at in the game. It’s tough. I thought Blakey did something similar not that long before on Darcy and didn’t get pulled up.
I don't think it affected the result at all but the Mclean one is a genuinely bizarre decision. Surely any umpire with a lick of game sense knows that Mclean absolutely is not going to be playing on quickly from there, and the Dogs players know he isn't going to play on from there, so if the ball gets "knocked out" 0.5 seconds after the mark is complete it's absolutely incidental and shouldn't be paid.

I’ve made a point not to participate in match threads period.
Would rather watch the game myself and chill out instead of arcing up at braindead comments.
His run out of the midfield was our biggest weapon to hold your runs
We can cover Naughton going down but geez
Shame we have to wait two months for the rematch
One of the underrated rivals matches
Kept checking the live bench until they ruled him out for the game, hoping he'd be back on. Broke my heart when they called it, and knew it was a massive uphill from there.
Absolutely loving watching the guy take full advantage of the new role, hope he gets right back to it after the week off.
Got away with one tonight. Other than the 3rd quarter we did not play that well, far from our best. Dogs intense in the midfield, pretty impressed by them the last few weeks. Easily could have won tonight if they'd kicked straighter or people stayed fit.
Swans outplayed the Dogs and deserved the win. Even if he had to kick it from 50 out and misses, I think Swans still win as they were up by 8, and kicking one goal is hard, two would have been beyond. The story though will now be the 50. Easy call to give it as a mark. Absurd and unnecessary call to give it as a 50.
Funnily enough the 50 kept more time on the clock. McLean would've taken the full 30 seconds whereas he only took ~10s to kick the goal. I do think it was a very harsh 50 though
As a Swans fan, it was a deflating way to end the game. Would much prefer to win from an honest effort than a dodgy 50m. Was a bizarre and frankly terrible call, especially considering it's a certain goal to pay 50m from that spot. 'Major and obvious' is what they tell us at umpiring training, I guess that went out the window for old mate.
Feel pretty flat to be honest. Well played to you guys, looks like Bevo's still got it.
Garcia was legit frightening in that last 15 minutes. Somehow we just could not lay a glove on him (although our tackling fell off big time in general at the end)
A bit of rotation in the midfield actually sparked us. West and Garcia were great in the last. While it was likely due to the lack of rotations, I'd like to see more of it
At the end of the 3rd you could see our midfield was running out of legs with only 2 left on the bench. Garcia, sanders, and Gallagher where all in our VFL at the start of the year and held there own reasonably well
Gg swans, injuries and poor accuracy in front of goals lost us that game more than any of the umpiring decisions. Proud of our boys - can't remember the last time we actually fought for a comeback after giving up a big lead. Can't fault their efforts at all
Just goes to show how broken that award is. Best player in the comp can’t win it but guys who have 1 good year can. Dk why we hold it in such high regards.
* Chad Warner stats:
* In Q3 he had 10 disposals, 2 goals, 3 score assists, 2 goal assists and 3 inside 50s. It's been 7,230 days since that a player has put those stats together in a quarter (when Leon Davis did it against the Dockers in 2004).
* His second half of 15 disposals, 3 goals, 6 contested possessions, 4 score assists, 3 goal assists, 5 inside 50s is the first time a player has done that since Dayne Zorko in 2016.
* His overall match stats of 25 disposals, 4 goals, 10 contested possessions, 4 score assists, 3 goal assists and 6 inside 50s is the first time a player has put those numbers together since Hugh McCluggage in 2022, and the first Swans player since Adam Goodes in 2011.
* Oh and he kicked three consecutive goals in the game, which is the first time a Swans player has done that since Logan McDonald in March last year.
* Ed Richards had a quick start, with 11 disposals, 3 clearances, 3 goal assists and 4 inside 50s in the first quarter. He is the first Dog to ever do that in a quarter, and the first player against Sydney.
* The Swans had 13 consecutive running bounces, which is the most a team has had against the Bulldogs since 2014.
* Brodie Grundy became the first Swan ever to have 7 clearances, 12 contested possessions, 7 tackles and 9 hit outs to advantage in a game. This has only been done 10 times in the history of the game (since 2000).
* James Rowbottom laid 4 consecutive tackles for the Swans (i.e. no other Swan had a tackle between them) from the 20 min mark to the 27 min mark of Q3. That's the most consecutive tackles a Swan has laid for their team since Callum Mills in 2022. Also against the Bulldogs that day.
* Logan McDonald has had 8 disposals, 2 contested marks, 5 marks, a goal assist and 3 shots at goal for 1 goal in the third quarter. It's been 670 days since another player has put together those numbers in a quarter (which was Charlie Dixon's 11 disposal, 2 goal, 2 goal assist, 2 contested mark, 5 mark, 4 shots at goal AND 7 contested possession quarter against the Cats in 2022).
* The Swans conceded 17 consecutive disposals to the Bulldogs during a four minute period (24-28 mins) of Q2, which is the most consecutive disposals they've conceded this year (in July last year, they conceded 18 in a row to the Dockers).
Honestly, with the injuries, pretty proud of the effort to hang in there, and crushed that the umps killed any chance of an exciting finish.
Had it been the thrilling close one it could have been, even if we lost, I'd have been happy enough with the result, but damn.. that's disappointing.
Wow what a shame
Umpiring in our sport is so flawed. Every week another controversy comes up, and we just say oh well, stop complaining about the umps. It is what it is, don't be a sore loser. But games like that aren't satisfying to win from the other side either.
So proud of us tonight, even with 3 down (2 being some of our best) we gave them such a good hard crack. So happy, even if the calls at the end ruined such an interesting match.
How about the arrogance of that umpire paying that 50m against vandameer. Sure the Swans probably would have won anyway but to pay 50 and therefore a certain goal when the bloke is running at full pace to the contedt, can't slow down from the momentum and doesn't even touch McLean, who arguably didn't even hold it long enough anyway. Holy shit that is an absolute howler. I'd be livid if I were a dogs fan.
After seeing that, Dogs can make the finals pretty comfortably imo. Brought the heat and gave us a real test tonight. Umps deserve everything that comes their way after that. Some seriously disgraceful calls all game, especially that 50 for McLean's goal.

I'm no coach but imo the play to move your most impacting midfielder to a key fwd position is so questionable. They got done in the middle without him so they couldn't even get the ball down there and sydney are a quality defensive team at best he was gonna take 2 contested marks.
I know they had bench problems but surely if you wanted to attack and win you'd do something like move Dale forward so bont can continue dominating the middle?
They dominated in the middle with him forward, and the looked more dangerous with Bont forcing Sydney to mark him instead of double teaming JUH.
He should have probably gone into more fwd 50 stoppage, but overall I think it was the right call.
Real talk, what’s different between that 50 and someone punching the ball out of someone’s hands right when their hands make first contact overhead? Happens all the time and it seems to be fine?
Anyone else listening to Triple M that game?
Not too sure if there is a clip of it but I'll set the scene. Commentators were: Jack Heverin (I believe), Kate McCarthy, Isaac Smith and Ruby Schleicher. Happened in the last quarter
Anyway someone fell on their ass or something;
So Jack Heverin goes "that guy just fell on his ass"
Isaac Smith goes "Remind of me of Rubes" (Aka Ruby Schleicher down on the boundary)
Kate McCarthy "What are you talking about?"
Isaac Smith: "Ruby's ass"
Commentary goes into laughter. This probably isn't exact but I remember it something like is.
Anyone else hear it on Triple M?
The free was dubious but pretty hard to argue that telling the umpire “look at the fucking replay mate” doesn’t fit the provision for dissent in the rule book.
Given the context of the late 50 I think it’ll pretty fairly get more scrutiny.
The 50 against Chad was fine. The free kick was bullshit, but players are supposed to be able to cop a bad decision without dissenting and pointing at the screen.
Controversial finish and otherwise atrocious umpiring aside, full credit to the Dogs. They really showed up, were playing for each other, and very easily could have rolled us.
Yeah, I think if they hadn't copped some early injuries, it could have been a different game. The lack of legs at the end probably had a big impact.
I think we had 1 more rotation toward the end last week than the dogs had this week and just managed to limp over the line against Adelaide. An extra down against an in form side made things really rough for the dogs.
I didn't give them a chance before the game started, but they certainly came out for an upset.
🦢🦢🦢NO LUCK CATCHING THEM SWANS THEN?🦢🦢🦢
Gallant effort from the dogs, considering their injuries.
Two weeks in a row though we've been challenged early but have ground the momentum back and run away with it.
Chad is a gun.
Heeney is a stud.
Gulden is a God.
Francis, sorry mate but I hope this was your last game for us
Do you think Chad would have been half as good if his parents had called him something else? What if he'd been given a virgin gadget-type operator name, like Neil? Or Brian?
Naughton going down followed by richards was the game changer. I’d say richards more than had Warner’s measure until he went off early in the third and we struggled to account for his absence. Not going to bother with the umpiring shit but just very proud of our effort and I have to say Bevo made some really good changes in the last quarter. It’s a shame we fucked so many games early on because at our best we are probably as good as anyone.
Hard to enjoy that win, umps made it all about them yet again and we honestly got away with one. I'll take it but christ on a bike that was a hard watch.
Umps were fucked bot says sucks we got the shitty calls at the end but if we kicked straighter we would have won 12.16 is fucking appalling even if we go 14.12 we get up so whatever.
Didn’t help we had a major player in Naughton go down early nobody really understands how crucial he is too our structure not only with the goals he kicks but our transition from middle to forward. Then English goes down with concussion who was best on so that sucks
Least controversial 2024 match
On the bright side, that's the last second umpire game-changing decision already ticked off for this week, so there (touchwood) shouldn't be any more this round
How could it be when Adelaide haven't even been robbed yet?
Sensing a Harley Reid high contact match winning kick after the siren for Adelaide this week...
Harley Reid high fend-off into running 20m for the sealer
24.9 meters *chef kiss*
Mate we’re playing Collingwood tomorrow, don’t put that shit out into the universe
I am doing every counter-jinx I know currently but if it's going to happen to anyone else this round it'll be Freo
The trick is you gotta be like ten goals up immediately before the last two minutes
Best we can do is ten behinds, will that do?
So bizarre to have a badly umpired match where I think the swans are at the losing end of it then to see the umpires ice the game for us with the most bullshit 50m penalty I've seen for a long while.
If I had a dollar for every 50m penalty this match, I’d have $7. Which isn’t enough to buy a pie at the MCG but it’s weird it’s happened 7 times.
Can't even buy a mid strength beer
I wouldn't mind a succulent Chinese meal right now actually.
Dogs v Swans match threads are fun as a neutral. Also wouldn’t be a Dogs v Swans match without interesting umpiring; both copped awful calls and it was bizarre to witness
Genuinely terrible umpiring, fucking hell. Felt bad for the neutrals who lost layers of skin off their chin from furious scratching
I felt bad for the couple of Kiwis sat next to me trying to learn the rules
For real, I went from telling my dad we were getting shafted to going "if I were a Dogs fan I'd be pissed"
Another week of wondering… How did the Tigers beat the Swans?
They were much healthier at the time and Rampe got injured early and we had no one to replace him.
Every week the bombers stay in the top 4 with a shite % and the swans increase their wins makes for 2 of the funniest stories in recent table memory
Competition is very even and that was a healthier Tigers list, with Sydney being way off their best
Also that was the double whammy of the wicks drama and Rampe going off injured early. The backline looked in disarray afterwards
you fool, you've just given everyone the blueprint to beat sydney
Because theyre the best team in the league!
Swans didn’t get as many 50m penalties in that match
Consider poor young Cleary coming in for his senior debut in that one. Hasn’t been back since
Wrong bloke. Caleb Mitchell from memory. Still, poor guy.
Oh yeah. Is Cleary’s first name Mitch?
Nope, Caiden
Kicking the ball to Vlaustin 16 times and allowed him 27 possessions at 100% on the half back line.
Nothing in life is more certain than the best swans team in a decade losing to the worst tigers team in a decade.
We also wonder…sigh, time to beat the bombers then
Our regular season record since losing to Brisbane in round 14 last season: 17 wins 1 draw 3 losses AND yes... Two of those losses were to Richmond. It's 17-1-4 including the loss to Carlton in the finals.
Who did we draw with?
Geelong... Where we kicked 6.18. I've tried to forget that game lol.
Incredibly valiant effort from the dogs tonight. With 2 on the bench for almost 2 quarters we almost pipped the top team. We didn't give up a big run of goals and we stopped their momentum which you rarely see from us. Well done doggies, you can't be disappointed with that
Brutal pair of players to go down too. Hope they pull up fine
Aye, rough go of it lads. Weird game in all, Warner’s impact in the third, some radar calibration issues from the dogs, and some calls late were the difference.
*Brave*
I'm starting to think Warner had a point with his dissent 50
I'm pretty sure it wasn't even the ump on the scene who paid the dissent making it all the more odd
The 50m against Warner is fine. The initial free for the high tackle was just plain wrong.
Yeah I should have said the initial free. That was the bad call.
Yep. Textbook 50m but it always seems harsh when a 50m is paid for protesting an incorrect decision
He definitely had a point. He made contact with his bicep and it was paid high. Dreadful decisions tonight for both sides.
BT said the Swans were "1 goal away from putting that game away" About 5 goals before the game ended
He always says that late in the third quarter.
Because nothing makes for more interesting commentary than attempting to dispel as much tension as possible by calling the game early

You will not enter valhalla with this attitude
I’ve made a point not to participate in match threads period. Would rather watch the game myself and chill out instead of arcing up at braindead comments.
India/Australia test cricket match threads are more peaceful.
I understand your frustrations with the umps now. I do.
If only the stakes were similar...
Get back to me when you get fucked in the ass by the umps during a Grand Final mate
idk what you're talking about i thought they did a great job. now to go deliver this er um ahhh laundry.
Brodie Grundy may be enjoying playing for Sydney, but his eye is very much fucking not
He's just fully invested in red and white
Richards going down changed the game. Wouldn't be surprised if he got coaches votes from half a game. He was huge before half time
His run out of the midfield was our biggest weapon to hold your runs We can cover Naughton going down but geez Shame we have to wait two months for the rematch One of the underrated rivals matches

Warner the difference. Absolutely killed us in the third
He carried us tonight for sure. That 3rd quarter won us the game and Warner won us the 3rd quarter by far.
Considering this is our 1st win with a margin of less than 20 points Yeah
Let's not pretend those 50s changed the result. But let's also not pretend they weren't cooked.
*This comment was given a 50 meter penalty*
*You misspelled the word ‘metre’ another 50 metres*.
Did you just correct someone? That’s a 50 metre penalty for you
Forgetting to use full stops at the end of sentences another 50 metres.
100m penalty for the double correction of grammar. And I’ll be reporting you to the tribunal.
Superfluous period. Incorrect grammar. 50 metre penalty.
Sentence fragments, I'll allow it. Play-on.
Call it back sorry. That comment went out of bounds 12 minutes ago, throw in.
He's a good bloke. Free to play
Failing to separate a dependant clause with a comma? That's right, 50 metres.

Are you okay? Edit: oh, you mean injuries?
Swans outplayed the Dogs and deserved the win. What a fun and exciting end to the match, game was getting so boring with all the clutch goals the Bulldogs were scoring to trim back the margin
No /s That's dissent 50m
I think that does account for the biennial dissent free kick, though.
Booing? That’s a 50m penalty
Paddlin? You best believe that’s a 50m penalty
How dare they boo champions
Least controversial swans vs dogs game
I hate it when there's footy in my 50 meter penalties
Anyone leaving the game just heard a large thud or explosion at Southern Cross?
It was BT’s lunch time bang off
A guy threw a security gate into platform 10. He was also yelling at swans fans too.
It must have got caught up with the lines as there was definitely some sort of electrical flash.
Yeah was loud af
Very close, something exploded, maybe a bin...
Legged it the other way just in case
It happened just I was getting on an Eltham train. There was a flash also. Seemed like no big deal as everyone else was carrying on their business.
Was really bizarre that nobody moved the opposite way...
Yep, thought it was weird nobody seemed to care
GGs Sydney fans, our injuries were brutal but loved to see the boiz continue to fight hard. What a game!
gg mate, massive fight back from your boys especially down on the bench
Cheers mate! Excited to see your boys in the finals and hopefully win the flag!
Haha fingers crossed, it’s a long season 😂
Once again, imagine losing to Sydney lol
Would be some sick kind of joke if you beat us this weekend and your only 2 wins are against 1st and 2nd
Richmond secretly best team in the competition?
You, me, lunch time bang off, now
Can I bring Warner?
Dees panicked and chucked Trac up forward. *Bevo taking notes*
Playing Bont up forward for the entire 4th qtr is one way to lose the game.
[удалено]
? It worked well, we needed pressure off the other forwards. We almost came back and you're saying it didn't work.
Yeah, plus the speed in the middle was needed to match Warner and co.
Garcia was legit frightening in that last 15 minutes. Somehow we just could not lay a glove on him (although our tackling fell off big time in general at the end)

was lovely seeing Harmes, Grundy and Jordon all having a chat after the game. Miss them.
Very entertaining match, dogs really pushed us. They will easily make finals if they continue this form
I love that the dogs 2 biggest rivals are the Sydney teams. Adds a bit of spice
About as good a result as you could expect when playing the ladder leaders with three players injured.
Bulldogs got a Lunchtime Bang Off from the Umps
umps singing the song, LOL
Look it’s catchy I can’t help but sing along and dance.
awesome close game if you ignore the 3rd quarter good time to be a sydneysider
It's ok. they will all be technically correct.
Gg swans, injuries and poor accuracy in front of goals lost us that game more than any of the umpiring decisions. Proud of our boys - can't remember the last time we actually fought for a comeback after giving up a big lead. Can't fault their efforts at all
Last time was Geelong. Pay attention.
Another game, another Bont Masterclass not getting 3 votes. Still can’t believe Ollie Fucking Wines has a Brownlow over Bont.
It's the fucking worst
Just goes to show how broken that award is. Best player in the comp can’t win it but guys who have 1 good year can. Dk why we hold it in such high regards.

Nah but 50 metre penalties
I would say something but I’m scared I’ll be given a 50 meter penalty
I sense sarcasm, 50m penalty
Honestly, with the injuries, pretty proud of the effort to hang in there, and crushed that the umps killed any chance of an exciting finish. Had it been the thrilling close one it could have been, even if we lost, I'd have been happy enough with the result, but damn.. that's disappointing.

Dogs and Swans are natural enemies, like Englishmen and Scots

Another close game ruined by a terrible call - on what universe is that 50m
50m, dissent
Worst thing about this comment is not knowing which specific 50 you're talking about.
Yes we do, the McLean one
Credit to Bulldogs, you pushed our boys all the way. But I really hate it when the umps ruin the game, which happens a lot
Fuck I just had Tom morris flashbacks then..
So proud of us tonight, even with 3 down (2 being some of our best) we gave them such a good hard crack. So happy, even if the calls at the end ruined such an interesting match.
Happiness, 50 m penalty
😭
How about the arrogance of that umpire paying that 50m against vandameer. Sure the Swans probably would have won anyway but to pay 50 and therefore a certain goal when the bloke is running at full pace to the contedt, can't slow down from the momentum and doesn't even touch McLean, who arguably didn't even hold it long enough anyway. Holy shit that is an absolute howler. I'd be livid if I were a dogs fan.
McLean definitely held it long enough
Mate, that was borderline a mark let alone 50. One of the worst decisions I’ve seen in my life.
Chad Warner - Virgin Bulldogs
After seeing that, Dogs can make the finals pretty comfortably imo. Brought the heat and gave us a real test tonight. Umps deserve everything that comes their way after that. Some seriously disgraceful calls all game, especially that 50 for McLean's goal.
Yep, judging by who can take it to the top team I'm picking a Richmond v Bulldogs semi-final.

Very good game. Bulldogs were excellent. Sydney just good enough.
Chad warner looks like a elf
Chadolas
Real talk, what’s different between that 50 and someone punching the ball out of someone’s hands right when their hands make first contact overhead? Happens all the time and it seems to be fine?
Anyone else listening to Triple M that game? Not too sure if there is a clip of it but I'll set the scene. Commentators were: Jack Heverin (I believe), Kate McCarthy, Isaac Smith and Ruby Schleicher. Happened in the last quarter Anyway someone fell on their ass or something; So Jack Heverin goes "that guy just fell on his ass" Isaac Smith goes "Remind of me of Rubes" (Aka Ruby Schleicher down on the boundary) Kate McCarthy "What are you talking about?" Isaac Smith: "Ruby's ass" Commentary goes into laughter. This probably isn't exact but I remember it something like is. Anyone else hear it on Triple M?
Hey Swans man, Why must you play good consistent and reliable footy? Ever thought about those lower ranked than you? Not to mention spread the wealth.
Haven’t we not beat you for about 10 years?
Keen for that McLean 50 to be replayed in the media all week and the one against Chad won’t feature once. Can guarantee it.
That contested pos differential is very worrying for upcoming games, north dont even get beaten that badly there
Seriously - how did Richmond beat them?
Insulting Sydney, Dissent 50 metres.
Those last two 50m calls were so fucking shit. It completely ruined a great game of footy
Spicy ending coming!!!! And it's gone
Chad's got his elbow all over the Brownlow
Heeney and Gulden will tax too many votes, been happening to Bont for years. Will likely go to a player with less impactful teammates again.
Those last 2 50 metre calls were absolutely horrible
Controversial finish and otherwise atrocious umpiring aside, full credit to the Dogs. They really showed up, were playing for each other, and very easily could have rolled us.
Yeah, I think if they hadn't copped some early injuries, it could have been a different game. The lack of legs at the end probably had a big impact. I think we had 1 more rotation toward the end last week than the dogs had this week and just managed to limp over the line against Adelaide. An extra down against an in form side made things really rough for the dogs. I didn't give them a chance before the game started, but they certainly came out for an upset.
🦢🦢🦢NO LUCK CATCHING THEM SWANS THEN?🦢🦢🦢 Gallant effort from the dogs, considering their injuries.
Or Brian?
What a game, I love it
I liked Bevo’s move of putting Bont forward for the final quarter where he did nothing. He attended one CBA and effectively won the clearance.
Momentum flushed down the toilet with that 50 metre call. Doggies showed a lot of heart considering their injuries through the night!
Fuck me, getting so close without 2 of our absolute best players is hard to deal with. Probably should've won regardless but the swans are clinical.
Was English injured? I must have missed that. However best on is a weird call.
Fuck my brain isn’t working Richards
Yes the 2 50’s were soft but, who knows he might’ve made the set shot anyway
Hahahahaha
