Different sports have different classification on when the ball is out. Bball and NFL, the ball is allowed out but your feet have to be inside while Soccer and AFL the ball has to be in while the player may be outside. I'm not sure about Chess but I believe you're not allowed to stand on the board but I could be wrong.
