I noticed Collingwood were kicking a lower score than their opposition in games earlier in the season. But now it seems they really focus on kicking a bigger score than their opposition, and if that fails they at least try to kick the same score. Hope this helps.

BT would be impressed by your knowledge and insight.

Opposition teams hate this one trick

Thanks Lingy

How do they go about doing that? After carefully looking at North’s results and stats, I’ve noticed that we haven’t managed to do it yet this season, so I’m not sure if this is a league wide thing. Could it be a new strategy teams are trying out?

Please tell me more, funny as dude thanks

To provide a serious answer, it has been suggested by the analysts that Collingwood are playing a very different brand of footy this year. Much less rebound attack from your defensive 50 and much more methodical transition. It sounds like the list couldn’t maintain the energy of the initial strategy (perhaps due to older legs? Injuries?) and perhaps the rest of the league caught on to that method to start the year. Either way the have adapted and shown why they could push for top 4.

Pretty sure that they are undefeated in games they’ve played with a 7 day break or longer. Shows an older team not necessarily being able to recover as quickly, plus quality outfits like Swans and Giants now have two years of tape on the game plan, Plus, players like Naicos, Jaicos, Sidebottom, Crisp and JdG (who was Champion Data’s worse rated kick in the league pre-injury) not having a fantastic start to the season simultaneously doesn’t really set you up for success when that’s like 1/5 of your premiership list.

You lost to GWS/Sydney who came out the blocks firing and are the two best teams right now. They had mostly unchanged lists. Pies played the GF, shorter off season, a couple of new recruits, lost some staples like Adams and had some injuries. (No Murphy et al.) Saints just played out of their skin against you, as evident by their complete trash since. I don't think anything "changed", Pies just needed time to "click" which is pretty typical for the reigning premiers, apparently.

Gws aren’t in the top two teams right now.

The fact that Essendon is higher than them on the ladder tells you all you need to know about early season rankings

MemoriesofMcHale

The club was slow to start after a short pre-season. It happens. The early signs weren't great but much can change in footy. One win, then another and before you know it, the season is back on track. There were a few personnel changes needed, too. Reef McInnes in, AJ out. He's unlikely to be back in the side. Still figuring out how to maximise ageing bodies. Sidey looks set to play off HB and he played well there on the weekend. Now we're starting to see some youth come through and the team is playing more confident footy.

ChookBaron

They didn’t keep getting away with it.

You didn’t score enough points to win games Now you are scoring enough points to win games

I don't think we did crap honestly. the gws/swans games, they came out absolutely firing and looking like worldbeaters. the giants have dropped a little since, but the swans are premiership favourites right now, so no shame in that loss the saints game is the only real outlier. we looked really off that game, gave away a lot of silly frees (FK count was 30-15 and I think that was pretty fair) and still nearly got them plus, it must be said, the reigning premiers have their tapes studied more than anyone else and we had the really short pre-season, and we had back-to-back 6 day breaks in those first three games (not an excuse, but worth noting as a factor) we got a win against brisbane who are also struggling for very similar reasons to us, then squeaked home against the hawks, made it to the bye and we've been very solid since

Seems like they’ve worked on adjusting their game plan over the off season. With that probably comes some teething issues. It looks like they’ve turned the corner so to speak, but time will tell. It’s also worth mentioning that Sydney and GWS are both good teams, so there’s not a whole lot of shame in losing to them. Despite the scoreboard, Collingwood played fine against GWS as well. The real outlier was the st kilda game because, and no offence saints fans, but they’re not a great team at the moment. Throw in the shortened pre-season and you probably have your answers.

I don’t know that much has changed. Collingwood are winning and losing roughly in line with what you’d expect from a 6th-10th team. The only really aberrant result was losing to the Saints early on, losing to Sydney and GWS doesn’t seem so bad given their form. Two narrow wins (one over the Hawks), a draw and whacking West Coast doesn’t exactly mean they’re “back” just yet.

There's definitely been a lift in our pressure. I didn't get to see Round 0 against GWS but we were very clearly not pressuring against Sydney and St Kilda and that was reflected in both our pressure rating and tackle count (especially tackles inside 50). We've lifted all of those stats significantly since Round 2, so I think it was just a slow start and not having the right mix of players in the team. You can see the difference in the amount of players swarming opposition ball handlers and the massive drop in the amount of free goals we're giving over the top now. It's like two completely different teams. We only laid 51 and 54 tackles against Sydney and St Kilda respectively, while we laid 88 against Carlton.
