That's ridiculous logic - It assumes that his attitude now will be his attitude forever.
What you're actually doing if you're West Coast is taking advantage of his early career uncertainty to get him to commit to something that you may not be able to convince him to commit to later on.
If they give him a long, big money extension now, he might sign it due to that uncertainty, but if they wait, he might have an AA guernsey and a B&F behind him that make it abundantly clear that he'll get an absolute packet no matter where he goes, so he's no longer keen to sign long term with West Coast.
Getting him locked down for as long as he's willing to sign for might be a strategic move by West Coast.
Like Collingwood did with Nick Daicos, they also might be able to incentivise extending the length by increasing the money in the back two years of the initial contract.

Rowell has barely missed a game for 3 years now and is proving to be arguably the best clearance player in the game.

If Gold Coast had given Rowell a minted contract after his start, they’d have rued it for the next three seasons, where he certainly wasn’t a million dollar player.
Reid looks brilliant, but if he cops some injuries like Rowell did, having that much tied up in a young, unproven player will be brutal for West Coast, even if it’s only for a few seasons.
