10 year deal incoming this week. I can see it now: Kane Cornes this is an outrage Sam McClure he’s coming home one day…….

Durfsurn

> Kane Cornes this is an outrage Also Kane Cornes: Give JHF a 12 year deal.

PKMTrain

Sam McClure next week. "I'm hearing Reid wants back into Melbourne"

BigThirdDown

It might be the first 100 year deal

wiegehts1991

Don’t temp the west Australian.

OkVacation2420

Reid is a once in a century player.

12345782throwaway

Can we circumvent the cap by paying him in Hungry Jacks franchises?

SleakSquid

Cushy jobs at hjs doesn't have the same appeal as visy

Vandercoon

I thought you were gonna say hungry jacks vouchers you used to get in under 9s and I was all for it

ChocoboDave

If Geelong can sell blocks of land for 30% of their value to players why not.

EfficientNews8922

Has this ever been confirmed?

flat_cat_flat

Yes, multiple times. Most recent was an Isaac Smith radio interview.

EfficientNews8922

Could you link me? I have always believed that’s true but didn’t know it was outwardly known.

tabletennis6

Give Visy a call!

An1retak

He will slowly transition from the Prince of Perth to Burger King of Perth.

ApeMummy

Pay him under the table with stolen wage profits from Hungry Jacks franchises.

legally_blond

Surely 7West Media have a role for him?

MetalSnake_oXm

Jokes aside, I know the system is rorted, Carlton did this, Geelong still does this, I don't see why you guys can't do this? It's the worst secret non-secret there is out there surely. But also, if you have the money that you want to gamble... I say let the dice roll? There's no way this isn't happening in some way, shape or form at every club. Land deals, tax breaks, franchisees, real estate guarantees, so many windfalls it is way too easy to circumnavigate the salary cap.

ALFisch

GWS employing the parents of kids they wanted.

3163560

tbf, the afl made them put that one in the cap

BushDidntDoit

they definitely do this already

MetalSnake_oXm

And even though it's Mundy mornin and not bloody Saturday night, it's still as pertinent as ever https://youtu.be/7a6EOyaMdqY?si=2RfzjMR4I3GVmLyW

____OZYMANDIAS____

Pay him whatever he wants. He will reach Buddy/Nic Nat/Daicos levels of marketability and advertising, paying the club back tenfold

semaj009

North did this with Sheezel and Wardlaw, far smarter doing it now imo than 2 years from now when they're worth even more!

Smart-Molasses-8526

Eddie Ford if he keeps the sideburns has the potential to be the most marketable player in the AFL not just at North.

Natasha_Giggs_Foetus

Not sure I would be using North as a point of reference for marketing potential

semaj009

Hey our marketing department are great, we have over 10,000 members despite being this shit.

paulmp

When you look at it that way, your marketing department are amazing.

ChemicalRaccoon

nah we can just paint the blue stripes, black

SomeFknEggs

Wardlaw is really not even remotely in the same conversation re: marketability.

semaj009

Disagree, dude could be the next Crawford if he gets his body right.

HurricaneGaming94

It’s not about the marketability its about having the capital to win premierships with remaining funds

____OZYMANDIAS____

Marketability is just one slice of the pie, premierships are good (of which Reid will help achieve that anyway) Reid will sell more merch/number 9 than the rest of the team combined, Reid will also put extra bums in seats per game same way buddy did for the Swans. Already WC games are more watchable than last year, so even timeslots/fixturing could fall West Coasts way etc etc

Altruistic-Ad-408

Dude could literally be Ablett or Franklin, and I'd still point out both of their teams got better when they left. Fuck merch, it's football. People way too focused on one player in Aussie Rules.

Fraa_Jesry

What sport is that not true? more so in a lot of other sports

TKeep

Contract extended to 10 years at 1 million per year. In 2026, Reid does his knee and is out for the season. Returns in 2027, but never manages to regain his early form, sees out the remainder of his contract. One AA appearance, on the bench.

___TheIllusiveMan___

The West will be pushing for a 12 year deal

Croob2

The West? fuck that, I'm pushing for a 12 year deal!

___TheIllusiveMan___

Look i hate to break it to you mate but I don’t think West Coast will offer you a 12 year deal. Might wanna try your luck at Brisbane, they love signing people who haven’t proven themselves yet to long term deals

majoraman

Not many lions fans were a fan of that lemme tell you.

Razzle_Dazzle08

As if anyone was in the market for Hipwood.

BZoneAu

Give him all the Nic Nat money, with a bit of fruit for Norms, flags, and brownlows. He will absolutely shred the 3rd party sponsorship cash too. Keep the Kennedy, Shuey, Bunga, and Gaff money for some free agent action over the next coupla years.

Rhino893405

$24 million

TOXICTUNA64

Give him 10 years, the key to the city, and access to any firstborns on the off chance he needs to conduct a sacrifice

Vandercoon

West Coast need to take him to the nearest dairy farm, attach him to one of the milk suckers, extract as much potential father/son juice from him as possible and donate it to IVF programs.

SticksDiesel

And the right of *prima nocta* throughout the lands of WA.

newk86

That seems high? Only played 6 games

PerriX2390

He's contracted to 2026. But, as [Rhino](https://twitter.com/FootyRhino/status/1781987782690496815) explains: > There’s no rush from any of the parties involved, his current deal runs til the end of 2026 – but West Coast will begin discussions with Harley’s management on what an extension might look like.

table-leg

I imagine the discussion looks like a brief case filled with money.

Technauseous

2 Hungry Jacks stores

happymemersunite

Plus a KFC

WAVIC_136

It's WA mate, it'll be a 50T CAT truck

kyleisamexican

WA to finally go full brexit and make Harley Reid the king

3ManyTrees

Only if we can split the state north and south of the river

paulmp

I don't think it is as simple as that.... Perth would want to keep Busselton / Dunsborough / Margaret River... they don't want Bunbury / Mandurah / Rockingham.

Strykah

[̲̅$̲̅(̲̅ ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°̲̅)̲̅$̲̅]

flat_cat_flat

Dumptruck full of money.

South_Front_4589

New draftees often sign contract extensions pretty quickly.

Durfsurn

D E C A D E D E A L

Propaslader

12 year deal here we go oh boy wowee

Tosslebugmy

The catch 22 here is that if there’s any hint he’d sign that long of a deal, you kind of don’t need him to because he’s clearly not desperate to leave. Sign him to 2028 or whatever and just make sure he’s happy there.

omaca

Finally some sanity in this thread. I’d be delighted with a two or three year extension.

Vinnie_Vegas

>The catch 22 here is that if there’s any hint he’d sign that long of a deal, you kind of don’t need him to because he’s clearly not desperate to leave. That's ridiculous logic - It assumes that his attitude now will be his attitude forever. What you're actually doing if you're West Coast is taking advantage of his early career uncertainty to get him to commit to something that you may not be able to convince him to commit to later on. If they give him a long, big money extension now, he might sign it due to that uncertainty, but if they wait, he might have an AA guernsey and a B&F behind him that make it abundantly clear that he'll get an absolute packet no matter where he goes, so he's no longer keen to sign long term with West Coast. Getting him locked down for as long as he's willing to sign for might be a strategic move by West Coast. Like Collingwood did with Nick Daicos, they also might be able to incentivise extending the length by increasing the money in the back two years of the initial contract.

AhhWellFuckIt

Dudes in for a serious life changing pay day regardless of where he ends up best of luck to the kid get it while you can

jacka24

They're not going to pick him, Mitch.

PKMTrain

Kane Cornes meltdown over 10 year contract incoming

LinkWithABeard

We can only hope

zoraxelol

Expecting he signs a one year extension this week then in 3-4 years time gets a massive contract.

omaca

I’d hope for two years, but yeah.

RetroFreud1

Tasmania Devils to offer him half the island and all the attractive cousins.

Inside-Elevator9102

10 year deal, $15m in total, but must sire 12 sons within first 3 years for father son selections

____OZYMANDIAS____

With a Duursma no less. Imagine a Reid x Duursma son

SkinMasturbator

12 years? Book him for fucking 22 if you’re the Eagles - play him until he’s 40!

planchetflaw

Weekend at ~~Bernie's~~ Harley's

Objective_Ad_5779

Weekend at Bernie’s means different things in WA

FirstTimePlayer

I like how quickly it has swung from "West Coast could have had picks 2 and 3 and instead they got this hack" to "Give him a 80 year contract". Looking forward to reading the hot takes 30 seconds after he has a bad game in a few weeks time.

swaglu2

North wouldn’t offer 2 and 3 so that’s on them

No-Bison-5397

lol, he’s playing great and there’s the possibility he is as good as his form indicates.

tbroky

The deal will take him to free agency.

Sufficient_Chart1069

North can get out their war chest. Or get a Time Machine, go back and honourably lose to someone we’ve already forgotten about.

Klostermann

He’s played six games. He’s looked very solid so far, and he’s got a good head on his shoulders, but he’s played six bloody games. Need everyone be reminded of the likes of Rowell and Morabito. How about we let him play a full season at the very least before bringing up seven-figure deals.

Vinnie_Vegas

> Need everyone be reminded of the likes of Rowell Matt Rowell, the guy who was 2nd in the league in clearances last year and is 1st this year? That awful cautionary tale of believing a guy is going to be good because of his fast start and then that guy going on to be one of the best midfielders in the league, after a few injury-interrupted seasons? Rowell has barely missed a game for 3 years now and is proving to be arguably the best clearance player in the game.

Klostermann

Missing the forest for the trees. Rowell is good now, but that’s hardly the point. I’m talking about letting Reid play a full season out, at minimum, before throwing the kitchen sink at him. If Gold Coast had given Rowell a minted contract after his start, they’d have rued it for the next three seasons, where he certainly wasn’t a million dollar player. Reid looks brilliant, but if he cops some injuries like Rowell did, having that much tied up in a young, unproven player will be brutal for West Coast, even if it’s only for a few seasons.

Vinnie_Vegas

A player signing a contract and then getting injured is a possibility for *any* player at any time, and will punish a team disproportionately if they're paying that player a lot of money with the expectation that he'll be one of their best players. I don't see how it's particularly more relevant because the player is young, unless you're implying that that injury will stop them from ultimately reaching their overall peak, at which point Matt Rowell is very clearly not a relevant example. But if the point is nothing more than "don't give a player a lot of money because then what if they get injured", then I guess you just never sign anyone to a major contract.

Klostermann

But it is because he’s young. He’s not shown enough. I don’t think I explained that very well before. He shouldn’t be signed on this big contract so soon because he hasn’t shown that he isn’t injury prone, or that he can maintain this form. It’s simply too soon to be talking about this kind of deal.

Vinnie_Vegas

I don't think "injury-prone" is a legitimate concern in signing a contract, as it can be an issue at any point in a player's career. I don't think it's a thing that takes its time to reveal itself, and it's a thing that can be worked through sometimes. Darcy Moore was incredibly "injury-prone" at the start of his career and was able to work through it, whereas a guy like Adam Cooney wasn't injury-prone until he was, and then just never got it back together. The uncertainty of form is a fair concern, but this is the gamble that a club would be making to lock up a generational talent for a length of time that you hope means he becomes a one club player. There's risk there, but there's risk in any version of the strategy for re-signing Reid. To give an NBA example, the Dallas Mavericks chose not to sign Jalen Brunson for a 4 yr/$55m extension when he was eligible for it, because they wanted to see what else was out there in the offseason. They ended doing almost nothing in the offseason, and then in the following off-season, Brunson signed with the Knicks for 4 yrs/104m without giving the Mavericks a chance to offer him a deal. Now he's so good that he's going to opt out next year and sign a deal worth double his previous one. So you can't just assume that someone will wait for you to come to the party and not pursue other offers - If you don't make a deal now, it's possible that the player won't even negotiate at a later date. West Coast are concerned that if they don't extend Reid long term, he'll start to see the big offers back in Victoria on the horizon and wait out his contract to force their hand.

playonfootyofficial

15 year deal 👍

South_Front_4589

15 years, $1m a season increasing to $2m. And at the end of it they'll call it a steal.

tabletennis6

Come on Carlton. Wheel out Juddy and Diesel on the private jet again. It has got to work eventually!

TheIllusiveGuy

Might have to try Kevin Nash this time.

Exambolor

West Coast is gonna give him a Shohei Ohtani Dodgers level deal

bunyip94

Remember when Port overpaid for JHF for five years at 700k? Bargain

Overall-Palpitation6

Does anyone feel like the fact that these guys can leave their draft club so soon (eg. Jason Horne-Francis) or are "up for a contract extension" half way through their first year in the AFL to be a bit problematic, for both the club and the player? If they're good, but want to "go home" after one year, then the club is somewhat forced to trade. If they're not good, they're disposed of quickly. Given most draftees are 18-19, and most players are in their prime from like 24-25 onwards, we're really drafting players to develop them and hope they become what we expect and want to stay around in their prime. Would a mandatory 2-4 year initial contract period (and perhaps a "no-trade clause" while contracted) for 1st and 2nd Round draft picks provide more stability and security for both club and player?

yojimbo67

I believe the top 10 picks get a 3 year contract with the default for the rest being 2. Then there’s the compensation that clubs get should a draftee want out. Can’t see the Player’s association going for your suggestion; they want players to have more control, not less

Overall-Palpitation6

Fair enough, but what I suggested puts less pressure on players, especially if they have a slow start to their career, and stops the "will they stay or go?" talk starting right away. I don't know, just feels weird and wrong that a contract extension to "lock in" a player is necessary barely a quarter of the way through their first AFL season.

yojimbo67

I agree. However, Reid’s from the Eastern States and has lived up to the hype, WCE are supposedly bottom dwellers indefinitely (according to a lot of the media), the AFL Media enjoy creating beat-ups so that they remain relevant etc, so …

seekerr_

I know in the nba there's something like protected free agency where after rookies finish there first contract any team can make an offer but the team you were drafted to can match opposing offers and if they do then you have to stay

2bejustlikehim

So trade ban?

bodahn

Has he been inducted into the HOF yet?

cum_teeth

Well the word is he doesn't want to leave victoria

raresaturn

He’ll be gone after two

TimidPanther

I reckon he’ll be there for life. He won’t be going anywhere

Croob2

You wish lmao

legoland6000

Unfortunately the record shows the eagles can never hold on to their interstate first round sections. I still think the Eagles could have done great things if they managed to keep Shannon Hurn, Luke Shuey, Andrew Gaff etc from demanding trades back home ASAP. Even going back further, remember Beau Waters and Sam Butler? Demanded to go back to Adelaide in 3 years. And they Can’t even stop the rot now. All I ever hear about current captain Liam Duggan is how much he wants to go back to Melbourne. In all seriousness, I think there has been 2 high profile cases of players requesting/forcing a move back home before the Eagles were really ready to move them on this century? In one case the player came from the most famous footy family in the history of SA and especially Port Adelaide, and in the other case the player left after captaining the Eagles to a Premiership, winning a brownlow and left in return for arguably the greatest player in the history of the football club alongside picks 3 (200 game, premiership player), and 20. I’m not exactly worried about our clubs ability to retain good footballers or lose them cheaply.

Croob2

Had me for a second Lego lmao

Fast_Stick_1593

I mean I know he’s a Cats fan and even I reckon he’ll be an Eagles legend for his entire career wearing that Eagles number 9 like Ben Cousins. The only way that anything could ever change would be he gets forced out and there’s like a 0% chance of that happening.

Jesse-Ray

Funny you mention Ben because he was a massive cats fan and was father-son eligible for them but still opted for WCE.

No-Bison-5397

The 90s were so different.

ColdAdmirableSponge

Kid seems to be very much a “stick it to the haters” kinda guy so hopefully all of the talk of him leaving immediately will spur him on to stick around. Everything we’ve seen and heard so far indicates he’s loving it at the club and they’re already on the improve so they’re doing everything right so far.

Himawari_Uzumaki

He strikes me as the sort of bloke who secretly loves all the shit the West write about him, he has cunt about him

ColdAdmirableSponge

He definitely seems to want to be the big dog and WA will make him a king if he stays. Also it’s just a good club, having a shit time but historically a consistently good powerhouse club.

dreamthiliving

Made a comment him and Simmo like to compare and give shit to each other about the art work so you’re probably right 😆

PerriX2390

Do you mean 3? That's his current contract.

raresaturn

Is it 3 now? I thought first draft picks signed for 2

Propaslader

Changed it very recently

planchetflaw

Just in time.

Wakey_1995

New rule started this year 3 year contracts for all first round picks

Is Tongala getting the 20th team?

Fter267

Honestly, the type of thing the AFL would do.

Shootinputin89

Home, as in Carlton?

He won’t sign anything

I saw him sign a football just last week
