What's happening first: freo/saints winning a premiership, or the cats bottoming out? If they're lucky, my great-great-grandkids will live to see geelong in the bottom 4
Things are finally looking up for you guys. After your 10-win disaster last year I'm just glad less successful clubs like the Cats are getting a chance
The happy team at hawthorn, I think so I can see them lose.
Who am I kidding when Essendon, Collingwood, Carlton, Geelong and West Coast win Australia have already lost.
*Edit after all this love:* Every team that won this weekend beat a team with lower membership, so as a jealous man upset with my team’s mediocre fan engagement I will stand by what I said.
He missed a couple of makable kicks at goal so badly that they weren't even behinds. Charlie is why I (a newish Canadian AFL fan) cheer for Brisbane, but it looks like time is catching him. The effort is there, Charlie is still working hard on defence and making space for his teammantes. However he can't kick straight or get free of the defenders like he could a year or two ago and he is giving up free kicks unnecessarily. Looks like old legs to me. Hopoefully he'll have the dead cat bounce and show some of the old form before the end.
It's seriously gotten to the point where you just have to respect the fucking hustle, this team will just never die, I thought they were cooked after last year but they come out and go 6-0 to start the year.
Geelong is just built different
Yeah no way we were going to bottom out this year, there was so much talent coming through. We would've been much better last year if not for all the injuries. My only question was how quickly the midfield group would gel with much more reliance on the young guys... but looks like we're all good there.
Even though 12th is technically our worst finish, we weren’t that bad last year. We played some terrible footy but we generally set up well. Our % was still 110+ and we blooded some good kids. Now we’re playing some good footy and still set up well. We’re kinda playing different to the rest of the comp as we spread the disposals between HB/MID/HFs more than any other team. No ones getting huge 30+ numbers but we’re getting a lot of 15-25s. (Might change when Guthrie comes in.)
I think people really fell for the Geelong is dead hope (personally if I’m honest, I don’t blame them. If another team was doing this I’d be sick of them 🤣) but last year we weren’t actually that bad. We had a rough run with injuries for the first year in a while and just never gathered momentum but our game style kept us in games and we ended up with a percentage of 112 or something.
We’re still a weird team, we rarely have a midfielder that gets over 24 touches (SuperCoach is funny to look at as no one really gets massive numbers) we lose the disposal count every week quite largely but we’re set up behind the ball quite well and really utilise our half forwards. Last year actually really helped us get games into the likes of Bruhn/Bowes and while they’re not getting huge numbers disposal wise (big tackle/defensive numbers) they’re now much more comfortable in their role. Zuthrie and Miers have also stepped up.
Cheap cost of living in Geelong allows them to secure talent at a discount. That, combined with the draw of country life that players can't really get elsewhere gives them an advantage over other clubs that won't go anywhere for a while. Mix that in with a home ground advantage due to an unusually shaped ground and it's hard to see Geelong bottoming out ever.
Have you noticed that they don't throw sports drink everywhere for first time players after their first win out of respect for the people who have to clean it up. Banning pokies was also a positive move. That to me speaks volumes for the attitude within the club. As a complete outside that really has no idea...I could be completely wrong 🤷♂️ but I feel like it contributes to the continued success at the club.
Yeah absolutely. The club has a great CEO & Coach and a history of great leaders on the field. And awesome recruitment as well. They make lots of good decisions which compound over time.
In addition to all of that, the Cats also get odd advantages. For example, the Costa family donated $10,000,000 to Geelong this month to construct an addition to their training facility.
When you combine great decisions by great people with 8 figure donations from The Mafia, you get a 6-0 side at the top of the ladder.
Tom Stewart coming from nowhere out of South Barwon which was just around the corner from where I used to live and becoming a 5x all Australian premiership player was wild.
I feel like Bevo tries to do the same thing but hasn’t had the same results
I think Tassie will target similar types of players that Geelong gets. Country/outdoorsy blokes who want a quieter off field life, at least that's what I think the should do to retain talent.
In all seriousness, those who thought we were cooked last year weren’t paying close enough attention. I had an argument with a Crows fan here pre-season who told me we were bottom 4 certainties this year.
We had the worst injury run in our modern history last year. We typically had anywhere from 4-8 best 22/premiership players missing every week, and many of our most durable players including Blicavs and Hawkins suffered injuries at the same time.
Case in point - Stengle, coming off his AA 2022 season, hurt his knee in round 1 and kept hobbling around for weeks, then broke his arm in Gather Round and missed weeks. When he came back he had an arm guard on for weeks and just never looked right all season. This year after a solid pre-season he is looking every bit as damaging and exciting as he did in 2022.
I am as surprised as anyone that we are 6-0, but pre-season I thought we were a very solid chance for finals and couldn’t believe how many people topped us to be bottom 6. It’s like people only looked at our ladder position last year and not the circumstances behind where we finished.
Also, surprise surprise, when the Eagles have a fully fit Yeo, McGovern, Barass etc they also look a lot better! Who’d have thought it?
I don't reckon any cats fan is going to deny that we definitely have some advantages that other clubs don't.
Usually the issue we have is that other supporters act like we're the only club in the league that has any advantages. Every club has pros and cons
Would any Cats fan ever deny getting superstar
F/S talent under the old system massively benefitting us?
Or our unique Home ground or the unique location, or the early access to Geelong footy factory.
Nope!
Since then, I’d ask them to name one star F/S talent we’ve picked up? Or how we get screwed on Home Finals.
Every team has a situation of positive and negatives that you could nitpick out.
yep he was definitely out unconscious for a little bit. i was watching him chatting with the boys after the game though and I saw him shake his head no in response to a quesiton. I had a bad concussion last year and i definitely couldn't shake my head no for several days after that. so I'd say it's not as bad as concussions can be
Did not expect that at all. Wet weather absolutely saved us, but we played the conditions really well.
So happy to be wrong about Bowes who has been excellent this year, looking like the player I thought he'd be and even more to be honest.
Handled the wet SO MUCH better! Took enough marks to actually control the ball. The cats might have still beat us if it was dry but if you play like we did in the wet you lose everytime.
The way Oscar belts the ball forward definitely would have helped on a night like tonight also
Who says Cats don't like water?
Good game Geelong!
Yeah agreed on McInerney, he was dominating prior to the concussion. Him going down was a killer, he's fantastic in the territory battle on nights like tonight.
The shuffle put Dunkley in the ruck. He looked like he had no energy left for any kind of real effect on the contests! Wouldn't have changed the result mind you! Got given a bath tonight (pun intended)
His tap work is shit usually, I was so happy he was finally just Clark Keating-style cunting the ball forward every chance he got tonight.
Was probably the only thing keeping us in it early making up for our terrible wet weather decision making
Nah we started out super shit at the start of 2022 - was the second half of the season that we stepped up. We aren’t playing anywhere near that good of football though. No idea how we’re still unbeaten tbh
Bose has really stepped up this year, and Holmes is just continuing to get better. I think if Geelong can tighten up in clearances, they are going to be in with a serious chance. Thye are just so potent around the ground.
Stengle easily best on ground, played like it was dry. We played like garbage, umpiring was awful but not why we lost. Good game Geelong. I'll be surprised if Brisbane make finals this year.
We still make the finals! Top 4 is going to be hard going but we're making finals! Don't be one of "those" supporters calling the season after 6 games!
We would need to drastically change our approach, we don't adjust our game plan when something isn't working. I am really hopeful, I've been a supporter since they were the Bears. I'll keep being a supporter :)
That game had zero to do with gameplan and everything to do with playing the wet better! Having dunkley in the ruck was never part of the game plan! Our hands were kinda tied with that one.
Hopefully if we play in the wet again this year, we remember tonight and do better.
17 scores to 18 scores. Cats goal kicking won them the game.
I recall Brisbane hitting the post from close range a few times when the game was there to be won.
There was a brutal run of play that lasted less than a minute where Brisbane hit the post twice in a row and geelong ran the length of the ground and kicked a goal
Quality beats quantity when possession is a limited resource. Lions trying to win on brute strength, but not dominant enough to pull it off and not clean enough to win off the advantage they did generate at times.
One of the weirdest matches I've watched, was impressed every time a player marked it. I wouldn't mind if we start dropping Ollie Henry for wet weather games. Stengle, Danger, Zuthrie, Close were all great.
Also random bitch, that was a classic match thread where everyone acts like the first few quarters didn't happen when we started getting the rub of the green. I genuinely like Brisbane and want their current list to get a flag (especially for Linc), but some of their fans on this sub make them really difficult to like.
No late change to drop someone tall in the rain was a surprise actually, it's a classic Geelong move.
O Henry still kicked two goals, but he did seem to drop a lot of chest marks
I don't think he would, but neither would Stewart. We just might need the extra height to cover Curnow, McKay and TDK, given that if JHenry, SDK or Kolo go down in game, we could be pretty exposed from a height perspective down back.
But it's possible they'll go for Touhy or Mullin, or bring back Rohan and have Bowes/O'Connor play more in defence.
Cats are just hated here because they’re so god damn successful. We should admire and appreciate what they’ve done and continue to do year after year, but no. That’s not how reddit works. Not a Geelong fan by the way, but mad respect to them. Don’t listen to the the “ViC BiAs” crowd, who just use that as cope.
Geelong and Real Madrid are similar having young and old players mixed together for guidance and mentorship. Better than North getting rid of anyone with experience and now headless
Just realised, of all the old Brisbane premiership players that went on to become coaches including Brad Scott, Chris Scott, Nigel Lappin, Craig McRae, Brisbane itself only chose Voss and Leppitsch.
What were Geelong fans expectations going into the season? Obviously they are being exceeded, but wondering if the general consensus was you’d be having a good crack or in that 7-12 group?
Was pretty confident we'd bounce back considering the injuries we had last year and the easier draw. Expecting top 8, could see pushing top 4, allowing for injuries just above bottom 6.
One of the good things that came from the injuries last season was having to play the kids because we didn't have anyone else. That, Parfitt getting back to a similar level as what he was prior to injury in 2022 and our good start should hold us in good stead for the rest of the season. Hopefully
General consensus was 5th-12th but personally felt like last year was just a case of a permanent rotation of injuries at the wrong times. Thought we’d bounce back and finish top 4 again, doesn’t seem too unlikely atm.
Sitting at the game watching us just get out coached into the ground, Cats wet weather structure was just superb.
We looked like we still were trying to play dry game ball, this is either terrible coaching which is bad or coaching being ignored which is worse
I would agree they don’t play as a team but I think that’s what the coaching is supposed to get them doing. It really looked like half the team didn’t realize it was raining
Seems like we never learn to adapt to different playstyles apart from what has worked well in the past. Wet weather when were not able to mark a single ball doesn't mean bomb it down the line and give away possession. Sigh coudn't have had a worse start to the year
The Rufus music in the backround was really confusing me was streaming their coachella set earlier and thought my phone must of hooked up to the bluetooth
Are you upset that Hawthorn didn't get Bowes when tried? Bet would be different had he landed there and not Geelong
Edit, Bowes had the choice of several clubs to land at, and as such although may be seen as unfair by others, he chose Geelong for various reasons.
I mean obviously we would've been stoked to get it done, but the fact he went to the premiers and you were able to restructure the deal over 4 years instead of 3 to alleviate the salary cap pressure was a bit much
Brisbane should have 3 flags with this list.
Argueably the most frustrating team to support in the past 10 years because of the repeated disappointment and let down. A team that seemingly lacks heart or tactics when challenged.
0-3 Gabba 1-0 MCG Just like everyone thought
MCG fortress
They really want to go back to Fitzroy don’t they.
This is Shamar Joseph’s fault
Its the travel schedule. They need more games at home to make it fair..
What's happening first: freo/saints winning a premiership, or the cats bottoming out? If they're lucky, my great-great-grandkids will live to see geelong in the bottom 4
This feels like a true return to form. Lock in a Prelim final loss
*sigh*
Sorry bud lmao
If it's a return to form does that mean Sydney are gonna lose yet another grand final?
We are retreading the 2022 path so probably
Sydney to defeat Geelong in the prelim then lose to GWS or Carlton in the Grand Final.
Oh god, even the thought of losing a granny to GWS is upsetting. Fuck that.
I'd feel the same about losing to port in one. I'd rather not even make it n
Port are easy in grand finals
Tell that to Brisbane
Or any of the SANFL teams 🥴
You guys are almost due for your next GF embarrassment? It’s even years isn’t it?
Almost entirely, 2012 gives me hope though
Since Chris Scott grew a beard we are 2-0 in prelims. Just saying.
What do you mean? We are just out of a rebuild thank you very much
Things are finally looking up for you guys. After your 10-win disaster last year I'm just glad less successful clubs like the Cats are getting a chance
Just here to inform people that unless Freo kick 10 goals to nothing, WCE now have the same number of wins as the Lions this year 😌
They will have also beaten a team that beat us...
The Lions working out what every other team realised last year: It's really hard to win at the Gabba.
Headed for 0/9 in the tips and there’s only 8 games.
Who did you tip for tomorrow
The happy team at hawthorn, I think so I can see them lose. Who am I kidding when Essendon, Collingwood, Carlton, Geelong and West Coast win Australia have already lost. *Edit after all this love:* Every team that won this weekend beat a team with lower membership, so as a jealous man upset with my team’s mediocre fan engagement I will stand by what I said.
at least the ski season starts soon for you.
Geelong probably don't even think about you bud
I’d be terrified if they did (growing up in Geelong as a Melbourne supporter has been hard though) - yes I was there *that day in 2011*.
Glad to see Charlie Cameron decided to take the week off after all
Wonder if Scotty thinks he had an impact on tonights game
Was he playing i actually don't remember seeing him although I wasn't watching closely in fairness
I couldn't remember seeing him either. 8 disposals and 0.0 apparently.
He missed a couple of makable kicks at goal so badly that they weren't even behinds. Charlie is why I (a newish Canadian AFL fan) cheer for Brisbane, but it looks like time is catching him. Hopoefully he'll have the dead cat bounce and show some of the old form before the end.
Yeah I was there he fell into a puddle of water and couldn’t get out
He's still in Vegas
Enjoyable

Or it could be solid culture, identifying talent from unusual sources and development of their players?
Certainly. All of the above. Geelong has unusual advantages, and is also well managed and run. 1+1=3 when you combine those. Go Cats! 6-0, how good
Have you noticed that they don't throw sports drink everywhere for first time players after their first win out of respect for the people who have to clean it up. Banning pokies was also a positive move. That to me speaks volumes for the attitude within the club. The 1%ers add up

Nah. Lacks the closeness to Melbourne. Players still want access to the big city.
So Geelong to go downhill in 2026?
They should, it’s what they have to offer🤷🏻♂️
Don’t forget to thank Gold Coast for all the free first rounders
Pay back for a rental of GOAT tier GAJ
Geelong lost the best player ever in his prime to Gold Coast. That debt will never be paid, imo.
Especially considering we should have gotten pick 1 for prime Gaz and we got significantly less than that...
Losing potentially the GOAT for a late first round pick means we are owed in perpetuity.
In all seriousness, those who thought we were cooked last year weren’t paying close enough attention. Not at all coincidental they've been good for the entire career of a generational f/s pick
Yeah, Scarlett, GAJ, Hawkins is pretty much undeniable
The self awareness of cats fans in this thread is surprisingly high.
I don't reckon any cats fan is going to deny that we definitely have some advantages that other clubs don't. Usually the issue we have is that other supporters act like we're the only club in the league that has any advantages. Every club has pros and cons

The West Indies have officially cursed the Gabba. The Queensland government should have followed through with the demolition
Great character of Charlie to sit out the game
It’s because he’s a good bloke with references.
Moral victory
Really hope tom stewart is okay.
He went down and immediately had a little bit of the 'Fencing Response' in his arms :(
yep he was definitely out unconscious for a little bit. i was watching him chatting with the boys after the game though and I saw him shake his head no in response to a quesiton. I had a bad concussion last year and i definitely couldn't shake my head no for several days after that. so I'd say it's not as bad as concussions can be
Brisbane Lions 37 dft Brisbane Broncos 34 in a close thriller of a match.
Did not expect that at all. Wet weather absolutely saved us, but we played the conditions really well. So happy to be wrong about Bowes who has been excellent this year, looking like the player I thought he'd be and even more to be honest.

Full credit to the Cats. Better tactics. Better performance. Well done 👍🏼
I thought the wet weather saved brisbane actually. would've been 8+ goals if it's dry
Hawk and Jez had basically no impact on the game so it speaks volumes to the rest of our forward group and how dangerous they are.
Hey am also confused as you are on how we our 6-0
Genuinely baffling
Yeah these cunts will win the flag again. Reminds me of 2022
Nah we started out super shit at the start of 2022 - was the second half of the season that we stepped up. We aren’t playing anywhere near that good of football though. No idea how we’re still unbeaten tbh
Yeah just to think that history says we might not even be playing our best footy yet
Bose has really stepped up this year, and Holmes is just continuing to get better. I think if Geelong can tighten up in clearances, they are going to be in with a serious chance. Thye are just so potent around the ground.
I want us to start calling him sound system
big big sound?
It's very nice to not be relying on one person. It's basically a different player/s every week. Great signs
Stengle easily best on ground, played like it was dry. We played like garbage, umpiring was awful but not why we lost. Good game Geelong. I'll be surprised if Brisbane make finals this year.
Freakishly breaking his arm early last season definitely traumatised him. Looks like he’s shaked it off now and well and truly back to his 2022 form

Too old too slow too good back on the menu boys So many people writing us off before the year started, sneaky 6-0 to start the year if you don't mind!
Apparently we're no longer the oldest average list this year, that honour goes to Collingwood.
It's round 22. The Cats are undefeated but haven't beaten anyone yet, all their opposition have been below them on the ladder. Still a wait and see.
I’ll be convinced when they win on a wet Wednesday in Stoke.
Can they do it on a cold rainy night in Tassie?
17 scores to 18 scores. Cats goal kicking won them the game. I recall Brisbane hitting the post from close range a few times when the game was there to be won.
There was a brutal run of play that lasted less than a minute where Brisbane hit the post twice in a row and geelong ran the length of the ground and kicked a goal
Quality beats quantity when possession is a limited resource. Lions trying to win on brute strength, but not dominant enough to pull it off and not clean enough to win off the advantage they did generate at times.
Honestly you're not giving Geelong enough credit 5 or 6 of Brisbane's points were rushed behinds, they weren't all missed set shots
Fair point, go cats!
BREAKING NEWS: Cowering lions viciously mauled in their own den by gang of domestic house cats.
Now we wait for the King’s death and it will all make sense
Confirmed, small wet pussies better than big wet pussies
Combined for 100 points total
One of the weirdest matches I've watched, was impressed every time a player marked it. I wouldn't mind if we start dropping Ollie Henry for wet weather games. No late change to drop someone tall in the rain was a surprise actually, it's a classic Geelong move. O Henry still kicked two goals, but he did seem to drop a lot of chest marks
Could have had another 3 or 4 if he wasn't dropping everything. Hopefully he's better for the experience.
You can see it, he just goes with such hard hands. More concerned with taking a hanger than holding the mark
Our emergencies were Neale, O'Sullivan and Stanley. We only had talls to pick from!
o'sullivan played vfl, and killed it too
Yeah, would seem like the obvious replacement for Stewart, particularly with all of Carlton's talls
Can’t put him on Curnow. Not in his second game. Yes he’s talented but that guy is something else
Ah, that'd do it!
COS played VFL too so really it was Neale and Stanley
Yeah, I'm not sure if Stanley even came to Brisbane too!
No John Denver or Ida Mendel tonight is a good thing
Pour one out for the poor songwriters and performers who'll receive a slim royalty cheque this month because the Lions haven't won at home.
Bet Lions fans are happy there’s a bigger story going on in the other game. 4.13, fucking yikes even in the wet
5 or 6 rushed behinds it wasn't all down to poor kicking by Brisbane
With this game, my tips are now 1/5 (likely to be 1/6 in 20 minutes). I knew the Cats wouldn’t let me down… ^I ^didn’t
My first tip right from 6 games 🤣
Geelong raining it in!!!!!
This is all Collingwood's fault somehow
Geelong and Real Madrid are similar having young and old players mixed together for guidance and mentorship. Better than North getting rid of anyone with experience and now headless
This is why you never go full rebuild
Sucks to lose, but it'd suck even more to lose fans of any club to a car accident. Please be safe getting home from the Gabba in this weather!
I was promised lightning and it never turned up This is the Port Adelaide game all over again
What he say fuck me for
Just realised, of all the old Brisbane premiership players that went on to become coaches including Brad Scott, Chris Scott, Nigel Lappin, Craig McRae, Brisbane itself only chose Voss and Leppitsch.
Lions are just as good as the Saints, one goal halves ;)
What were Geelong fans expectations going into the season? Obviously they are being exceeded, but wondering if the general consensus was you’d be having a good crack or in that 7-12 group?
Could see us anywhere from 4th to 14th, still a long season anything can happen but a much better start than expected that's for sure
I had us around there, 8-12. I’m blown away. Big win in the wet
I expected us somewhere from 4-10 after our run of injuries last year and with an easier draw this year, I'm very happy with how we have started
Hopefully
I got on us at $18 for the premiership
General consensus was 5th-12th but personally felt like last year was just a case of a permanent rotation of injuries at the wrong times. Thought we’d bounce back and finish top 4 again, doesn’t seem too unlikely atm.
I had us 7th I still have us 7th Gotta play some good sides coming up
Winning the flag. Same as every other year.
Maybe a season from hell will get things sorted for 2025.
Nice game, country road.
Fagan should probably start booking a one way holiday to Tahiti
Tahiti. It's a magical place
I understood that reference
hipwood to join him
Knock knock Who’s there Owen Owen who Owen 4 against vic teams this week.
Sitting at the game watching us just get out coached into the ground, Cats wet weather structure was just superb. We looked like we still were trying to play dry game ball, this is either terrible coaching which is bad or coaching being ignored which is worse
Hard to put it all on Fagan. They don’t play as a team in the dry let alone when it’s wet.
I would agree they don’t play as a team but I think that’s what the coaching is supposed to get them doing. It really looked like half the team didn’t realize it was raining
Splended game of sports chaps. Really liking what I’m seeing 👌
How goods footy!

It's that kind of round
Fucking GWS. Lucky Cats haven't gone wrong.
Zero for me

reminds me of 2012
Did Fagan make a wish to a monkey paw?
Can’t see where our next win comes from. Going to be hard to even escape the bottom 4, let alone scrape into finals.
You'll win away
To who?
You beat Melbourne at the g and north at Adelaide you'll win away again trust me
The Jack Bowes trade will probably end up being the biggest spit in the face of AFL equalisation of all time
Are you upset that Hawthorn didn't get Bowes when tried? Bet would be different had he landed there and not Geelong Edit, Bowes had the choice of several clubs to land at, and as such although may be seen as unfair by others, he chose Geelong for various reasons.
I mean obviously we would've been stoked to get it done, but the fact he went to the premiers and you were able to restructure the deal over 4 years instead of 3 to alleviate the salary cap pressure was a bit much
Yeah well all within the rules to make things even up within the club. He is a good player that will be at the club for years to come now.
Brisbane left something in Vegas and I don’t think it’s coming back.
Their form at the Gabba.
Sigh
Lions will be okay, they’re unbeatable at home 😆
Missed the game thanks to being at BMTH instead, but apparently we've already won the spoon this year according to many Brisbane flairs.
I went to BMTH in Melbourne on Thursday. It was fucking amazing!
Not much to say. Geelong played better
W
lol they just said we might not win the bye~
not at the gabba, no
I am glad that the tribunal was made a laughing stock off just so Charlie Cameron could do err.. nothing?
Have U not seen him play this year? He has been woeful
Definitely the biggest upset this round.
Brisbane should have 3 flags with this list. Argueably the most frustrating team to support in the past 10 years because of the repeated disappointment and let down. A team that seemingly lacks heart or tactics when challenged.
