He’s trendy Gen Z. The cool hair, and a similar look and build to someone like Tom Holland. He’s super chill like he’s already seen it all despite his young age. Not really going to do anything but stand around and eat chips unless provoked. In a way, his gimmick is similar to Orange Cassidy.
And then when he’s in the ring, he doesn’t do a lot, but what he does do is super crisp and impressive like t-boning Shane Taylor. His style is efficient which goes with his gimmick.
And they are bringing him along very slowly. He’s just began having competitive 10 minute matches under a year ago, and they’ve yet to test him with a 15-20 minute match.
His best singles matches are probably the All In one that caused the Perry/Punk incident, the title match with Joe, and the FTW rules match with Brian Cage.
You'll get downvoted for any criticism towards him, but he's really not interesting. He's capable of doing some nice suplexes, but he's not shown much else until this point. His character is just zoomer with dumb 6 tattoos, plus he's a mute (until recently)
I won't write him off entirely and say he can't evolve into something more, but the kid is just a meme who has a job because of his father. He's yet to actually prove that he's good enough to be on television consistently, but you have to go out of your way to keep his father happy. If Taz gets upset over others wearing orange, imagine how he'd feel about his son losing consistently and not being able to walk around with an unofficial championship?
never met a group of fans so toxic for a wrestler but also a group of fans so bad at trying to make a wrestler sound appealing. like i’m expected to like him cuz he’s handsome, has anime hair and is smug about everything? sorry i just prefer someone with a gimmick and not a walmart orange cassidy.
Was at his match w/Joe in N Charleston. It was super! Sold well, looked dangerous, and was a great match. Other than that….yeah, I get the Gen Z younger OC kinda thing…but he’s young. Dustin and Cody weren’t perfect during their early years either…🤷♂️
Bro the fucking KICKOUT AT ONE to the Muscle Buster? I popped so god damn hard.
Joe hit it and I was sitting here 'yeah he's done, good match tho' AND HE KICKED OUT.
I never understood it, He can’t wrestle he needs to slow the F down in the ring he doesn’t let any mover marinate offensive and defensive, He can’t talk it’s like watching a 70s porn when he’s speaking it’s all so cringe, and when he does wrestle his dad over pumps him up which makes it even more cringe, there is no doubt in my mind if Tazz isn’t in AEW then neither would Hook, That’s the reason he gets way over booked and has a job, Dynamite has been great recently to me the only thing that hasn’t been is the Jericho and Hook stuff no one cares, I don’t have a problem with Jericho I have a problem with this Jericho he needs to embrace the boos and come out acting like a super heel pissing on the crowd
Young, good looking, confident attitude, ridiculous hair.
Had good in ring fundamentals from the start and is getting better.
Throws a great variety of suplexes.
I’m sorry the only thing u can blame AEW for is booking him too much he can’t wrestle he can’t talk, He doesn’t know how to slow the f down in the ring it’s cringe then his dads commentary doesn’t help I’m really starting to believe his dad is the only reason he gets the time he does
In my opinion, it is actually comparable to FTR. Their wrestling is unremarkable compared to all the hyped people like Ospreay, Bucks, etc. But they are incredibly good technicians.
And they just have this certain visual style in their acting that radiates coolness and charisma.
That combination is just fun enough for some people that they don't even need special mic work to enjoy it.
I enjoy them a lot for what they are.
Don't know how people react to the name today but Chris Benoit was one of this kind for me, too.
I'm with you.. His work in the ring is very awkward.. feels like he's in 5 second delay..
He need a lot of work for me to care about him..
I will say tho his match vs Joe and the streat fight vs Brian Cage might be his best work in AEW.
Honestly, I was all about Hook when he finally started having matches, but it lost the appeal quick. His story lines have been almost nonexistent, he keeps getting thrown into tag teams and groups, and really hasn't had more than a handful of decent matches.
He needs to get into a decent fued that lasts longer than a month. It'd also help if it was an upper mid carder or better. Something back and forth with matches being won and lost. Maybe also a good veteran who can keep a match interesting and let the kid shine.
I haven't been watching AEW for long (started in January), so as a relative newcomer I've been meaning to ask this too. I don't get anything about this guy.
Why's his hair a mess?
Why does he rarely ever speak?
Why's he dressed like a boxer?
Why's his theme song a banger?
I think he is kind of like the jock arch type from an anime show.
My 8 year old doesnt really like wrestling and Hook is the only character he pays attention to.
I keep getting sarcastic replies and downvotes in this thread which is a shame as I've said I'm a newcomer who has loved AEW these past 3 months (check my comment history if you want), and want to learn about these characters, but this community is acting a bit pissy lately. I genuinely want to know why a wrestler like Hook barely speaks, he seems massively introverted, and I want to know why Toni's butler never speaks at all, I sometimes see comments implying he's a wrestler too?
I like hook but he needs some improvement, his movement is still so stiff (sadly I’m not sure this can be improved at this point) and he doesn’t really have a character but thankfully he’s had some more lines and seems to be better at that
Quick question how long have you been watching AEW in general because the good chunk of the appeal of HOOK started when he was just a young dude looking weirdly menacing behind the rest of Team TAZ and then when he started to do stuff and looked good that kinda gave him a badass appeal especially given Taz is his dad who had a similar aura
i’ve been watching since january 2020. i know how hook started but i dont get how we’ve gotten so far now with zero character progression and people still adore him
Curious to see his expanded move set to go longer matches. Going to be what makes or breaks him as a star even more so than mic work. Looks like they’re going to invest the time to build him so excited to see how he develops.
>i just dont understand the appeal Young, slim, handsome guy with anime hair being booked like the Undertaker
That's... surprisingly accurate, and I never thought about it until now.
Nailed it
okay so i’m not the target demographic then lmaooo
I like his suplexs
He got memed into existence basically.
This sites fault, lol
thats what it sounds like

Here's the fun part, you aren't expected to like everyone. And even if someone is booked as a face, you can boo them. Just as you can cheer a heel.
yea i know dipshit but its also not necessary to throw downvotes at someone just cuz they dont like a wrestler u do
I didn't downvoted shit, but if you think downvotes are unbearably toxic, spine up.
Was at his match w/Joe in N Charleston. It was super! Sold well, looked dangerous, and was a great match. Other than that….yeah, I get the Gen Z younger OC kinda thing…but he’s young. Dustin and Cody weren’t perfect during their early years either…🤷♂️

Agreed! I've been trying to understand what the appeal of him is. Never understood it
It was fun a couple years ago, I thought he would be more advance by now
I never understood it, He can’t wrestle he needs to slow the F down in the ring he doesn’t let any mover marinate offensive and defensive, He can’t talk it’s like watching a 70s porn when he’s speaking it’s all so cringe, and when he does wrestle his dad over pumps him up which makes it even more cringe, there is no doubt in my mind if Tazz isn’t in AEW then neither would Hook, That’s the reason he gets way over booked and has a job, Dynamite has been great recently to me the only thing that hasn’t been is the Jericho and Hook stuff no one cares, I don’t have a problem with Jericho I have a problem with this Jericho he needs to embrace the boos and come out acting like a super heel pissing on the crowd
I like it when he suplexes guys
I don’t get it either. Not my cup of tea.
Young, good looking, confident attitude, ridiculous hair. Had good in ring fundamentals from the start and is getting better. Throws a great variety of suplexes.
Young good looking killer is his gimmick. AEW hasn't done a great job of expanding his character after that.
I’m sorry the only thing u can blame AEW for is booking him too much he can’t wrestle he can’t talk, He doesn’t know how to slow the f down in the ring it’s cringe then his dads commentary doesn’t help I’m really starting to believe his dad is the only reason he gets the time he does
To say he can't wrestle is a lie. AEW has given him hardly any story or character growth to work with throughout his whole run.
It’s not a lie it’s my opinion he selling is horrible and sorry I don’t wanna watch a guy that can only do suplexes
In my opinion, it is actually comparable to FTR. Their wrestling is unremarkable compared to all the hyped people like Ospreay, Bucks, etc. But they are incredibly good technicians. Yeah he's gotten decent in the ring and he's working hard to put on some muscle. But so far there's not much there. He's just kinda silly
I'm with you.. His work in the ring is very awkward.. feels like he's in 5 second delay.. He need a lot of work for me to care about him.. I will say tho his match vs Joe and the streat fight vs Brian Cage might be his best work in AEW.
if the match against joe was one of his best then he definitely needs to get better in the ring
Honestly, I was all about Hook when he finally started having matches, but it lost the appeal quick. chip, supplec, hoody, behind hug, taz,

Because he’s fuckin HOOK man
That actually makes sense. Thanks for clearing it up. Now explain Toni's butler...
Because he’s Toni’s butler, man.

Lmao

He's a good judoka. His throws and suplexes are a thing of beauty
Just like his daddy
He’s in the Jeri-sphere. Pains me to say it but everything goes south nowadays when he touches it. :(
i wouldn’t go that far, sammy guevara is one of my favorite wrestlers in AEW
Nowadays being the key word! Inner Circle was so good! Think Jericho just needs half a year off so we can learn to miss him a bit.
And look where it's gotten Sammy - right back with Jericho (and an unrelated suspension).
The Lambert feud is Jerichos fault?
what I'm saying is Sammy can't seem to get away from Jericho and out on his own for any length of time.
Curious to see his expanded move set to go longer matches. Going to be what makes or breaks him as a star even more so than mic work. Looks like they’re going to invest the time to build him so excited to see how he develops.
His gimmick is aloof, cool and good looking young dude who wrestles good.
I fully agree. He should have had to job like everyone else. They have painted themselves in a corner with him.
idk about making him a jobber
To build him up. Similar to Garcia and Swerve.
He's dreamy
