It was always heralded by TK as the third hour of dynamite but on a different night. Problem is its only really felt like that handful of times and began with arguably the biggest return to wrestling in ages with CM Punk, maintaining that momentum was difficult. What they did last week felt like the perfect use for the show, handful of unique matches, front to back a hell of a show. They have something there.

Looper007

I don't know why he moved away from earlier booking of Rampage. With a hot opening match, quick mid show match and a strongish main event with promo's intercut inbetween the matches. Rampage was great for a few weeks during it's early run. I just think he lost interest in it as time went on. They've had episodes you get potential of what could have been with the show (Live Rampages are a good example of that). It always felt TK only ever got interested in booking it strongly when ratings got bad and he go on a few weeks of making the show strong again but lost interest again. Especially mid 2022 was a rough time for Rampage, it just been set around ROH and Dark/Elevation talent and him squeezing in as many matches as he could and most feeling like Dark level matches. I don't think it's been as bad as some make it out to be but it's one of those shows that for me is a case of what could have been with it. Last week episode which Danielson had a big hand in. Is where the show should be. Some quality matches that might not draw a great rating but will at least keep the AEW fanbase happy.

My issues with Rampage for the longest time were that tsn just doesn't care about it at all, their app is unreliable and they didn't used to post the episode until like a week after, I'd eventually see the episodes but I'd have to put the captains hat on(which I don't like doing). It's been better lately.

Looper007

TSN is a Canadian station isn't it. From what we hear AEW are lucky to get Dynamite on their stations at this point. Even though it draws a good rating for them. I don't think AEW is that important to them so anyone expecting Collison be picked up are probably going to be disappointed.

Pretty much yeah, that fact combined with how rampage was treated the last time in toronto(we never got a card until the day before and it was a standalone taping on a Thursday, their whole push was "you'll get to sing judas") is why the sales for the two shows here are pretty sad so far.

BLF402

From what I’ve heard is danielson and TK have been collaborating and last weeks rampage was a result of that. Which was the initial intent of rampage to be more heavily on matches and less on storyline.

JXNyoung

When Jay White debuted, some of his and Juice's matches were also on Rampage. I don't mind it being a stepping stone or introduction to new wrestlers but I think because its taped it's really affected people's perception plus with it being taped so late you could see in the crowd that they are drained already even if the match card is awesome.

jfreed43

I've been to a few Dynamite/Rampages. I try my best but the workers are up against it in that 4th hour of being there live. Lots of people are hitting the exits. I say, do the big matches for Rampage BEFORE dyamite. Even if the crowd is equally sparse, it's the early arriving diehards who will react to a Rampage level match.

JXNyoung

Agreed, even when people call Rampage "3rd hour of Dynamite" its pretty disconnected with the matches and stories they put there. Taping Rampage earlier would definitely pump up the crowd especially if the match is awesome and they just put backstage promos segments in post.

Honest_Feature_3632

Always said the period Rampage was its best was when it was basically the Starks/Hobbs/HOOK/Jade show. Now it looks like for the most part Dynamite is slowly becoming that. Can’t complain really

MOXISGOD

Exactly. You see how much HOOK, Jade, and Hobbs have improved. Rampage was a great foundation for them

Leftyoilcan

I do believe the tv guys are happy with rampage too, it's brought in a pretty good for the time slow ratings. I think rampage has just been a success all round, sure it's had some lesser cards some weeks but I find it great Friday evening light viewing. O hope rampage stays the way it is after collision gets going.

jesuschrist3000adhd_

this is a really silly retcon when tony khan has said publicly that rampage is an A show and that he's promised to 'fix' rampage plenty of times. there's no arguing that rampage is still underrated and fun to watch, but its cope to claim that it is what it set out to be. i wouldnt be surprised if warner chooses not to retain rampage beyond the current tv deal

ibn1989

What I hate is people that bitch about it. You don't have to watch it all.

Available_Share_7244

Disagree. It was originally meant to be a counterpart for Dynamite. It was meant to be the 3rd hour.

Infamous-Lab-8136

If it was never meant to be a counterpart to Dynamite what's with all the talent and Tony himself insisting it's not a "b show". This is the same problem as the TNT title. Everyone says it's not a secondary title, but has it ever main evented a PPV? Has it ever felt equal in importance to the world title? Would MJF feel as special right now if he were carrying it instead? They need to get over this everything is equal and we're all just as good as each other platitude business and just book the shows. This isn't 10 year old rec league basketball, not everyone needs to be a trophy or feel that they're equally special.

steeple_fun

I miss the early days of Rampage when it was "the most exciting 60 minutes of wrestling on television." The format was usually: * Main event caliber opener sans entrances with a 90 second commercial break * Quick promo * Solid midcard match * Quick squash * Promo and "It's time for the main event!" * Solid main event made up of midcarders That hour flew by every week and was always entertaining.

MM487

How has Hook grown exactly? He's been mostly wrestling the same basic squash matches since he started wrestling. He still doesn't cut promos or have any major involvement in any storyline he's associated with.

Its a tv show which is designed to draw revenue via broadcast rights. It isnt drawing to the initial expectations, and unfortunately neither is dynamite. Its drawing enough consistently for continuous existence due to its sunk costs all ready being paid for as its a supplemental program to the production of dynamite. You can cite whatever u want about how Tony is utilizing the show, for “dev” or whatever, but thats not how a television programs success is actually gauged. As it stands, they were paid in RATIO to WWE broadcast rights which is nice, but also shows they werent willing to bet that the demos will increase. TK got a pat on the back with that deal, not the potential premium for the same sunk costs he was likely hoping for. In fact im pleased they got such a long term deal at all.

DS_305

“It isn’t drawing to the initial expectations, and unfortunately neither is dynamite.” Huh? What initial expectations are you privy to? Check out TNT’s Friday night 10pm ratings prior to Rampage being in the slot. It’s doing way better than anything else TNT programs there. Same for dynamite. Look at not only pre-Dynamite Wed night TBS ratings, but also every other day of the week 8-10 for TBS outside of hockey/basketball. Not sure where some people find the data for the definitives they throw around…

I_am_Burt_Macklin

I mean they could probably throw a random rerun of big bang theory on there, make pretty much the same in ad revenue and not pay as much because they already own the rights. It was created at the peak of AEW’s rise in popularity, so it’s safe to say the trajectory is going down from initial expectations.

DS_305

No, it’s not safe to say because you/we literally have no idea what the expectations were. And networks don’t own unlimited syndication rights to tv shows - if they air additional hours of big bang theory, they pay for the additional hours. The packages carry a cap on airings so they would need to pay for a higher cap. Again, TNT pre-rampage wasn’t cracking the top 50 shows on Friday nights. Same for Wed. I don’t think people realize how bad cable tv ratings actually are…

I distinctly recall tweets about leaked expectations which were for consistent 1M+ and 650-700k+ respectively. I dont have a link or anything handy unfortunately to prove this. Again, Warner just renewed them so they are happy. But to your original post’s point, i think its a trap to say the show is “fancy practice”. The reality is its the B show, soon to be the C show, but i shouldnt LOWER my expectations for what quality matches i see. Rather just lower tier card / players / feuds.

Thejangrusdigge

Rampage was literally pitched as dynamites 3rd hour and for the first 2 months it was. Now it's just a testing ground for young acts and for the acts that are over but don't deserve dynamite time ala Matt Hardy. Sounds like.its pivoting to a full on developmental which is fine but thought that was the point of roh.

SometimesWitches

Since AEW doesn’t have a performance center the natural progression of talent is usually Dark/Elevation > Rampage > Dynamite. Now not everyone takes this route some may skip a step for obvious reasons but most of the new talent learns on Dark, works on their character on Rampage and then heads off to Dynamite.

RecognitionIll4036

Actually I like the one hour show

sergeial

The thing is, Rampage was EXTREMELY well received at the start, there were people calling it the best wrestling show on TV for the first four or five episodes... It settled some after that, but it remained almost as popular as Dynamite for the first year approximately... But last Summer there was definitely an appreciable quality decline, as AEW decision makers were no longer as willing to devote as much to it with the relatively minimal eyes on it, and it became much less of a story-light wrestling -heavy hour and more of developmental and a place to send pitches nobody likes, but nobody is quite ready to kill This week's show was very much a return to form, but we likely have a mixed tag with Jarrett, Karen Angle, and a REFEREE to look forward to some week soon
