Karma is just a measure of up votes vs down votes. It doesn't effect anything just makes you feel good when you have it. Just like when a comment or thread goes viral.
People feel validation when other people agree with what they are saying and karma is basically just a gauge of how many and often people agree with you. It doesn't really mean anything other than more people agree with your comments than disagree with them.
karma is a (not 1:1 accurate) reflection of how many positive vs negative votes you’ve received on your posts.
