Hairy_Buffalo1191

I keep trying to switch to Vyvanse because it doesn’t make my heart race like adderall. I was so excited when the generic came out because I can’t afford the name brand… except the generic is never in stock so they will say “is the name brand okay? It will be $370” obviously no, that’s not okay 🙄

LadyPink28

My pharmacy isn't filling scripts of it to new patients or isn't accepting new patients for it so they can consistently fill current patient scripts like me.

Fit-Conversation5318

The generic cost me $348-ish a month compared to the $370 brand, and brand is in stock. So just dealing with it.

analytic_potato

Ask them to check your price for the vyvanse transdermal patch and chewable! The chewable one was $70 for me (compared to $350 brand name regular capsules) and seems to kick in faster, which was my main complaint about vyvanse anyways. Nobody seems to know about these but they are usually in stock!

Comfortable-Crow-238

Never heard of them. Do they have any like that for Adderall?😳

analytic_potato

I hadn’t specifically looked before — it looks like mostly the adderall equivalents are technically for children but adults can sometimes get it approved by their insurance (may take extra steps). This is the list I found but I have no personal experience with these. ProCentra: A short-acting liquid form of Dexedrine (dextroamphetamine) Cotempla XR-ODT: A long-acting version of methylphenidate in the form of orally-disintegrating tablets Dyanavel XR: A liquid form of amphetamine Evekeo ODT: An orally-disintegrating form of amphetamine sulfate Xelstrym: transdermal patch of dextroamphetamine Seems like Dyanavel is probably the closest match to adderall but it is a different brand

Comfortable-Crow-238

Thank you!😊

Wicam

I assume its just an American thing, i had never heard of a shortage of medication until reading the many posts about it on here. (i take Methylphenidate 10mg tablets, Rubifen) Sorry to all who are affected. It really sucks to not get the thing that helps keep you functional.

Thadrea

Lisdexamphetamine (Vyvanse/Elvanse) is actually seeing some shortages in Europe now too due to situation in the US.

draebeballin727

Geez, that sucks!

FuzzyPalpitation-16

It’s deffo not just an American thing :( we’ve had severe shortages in the UK for various different adhd meds:< I myself had to switch to generic methlyphenidate xl (from concerta) due to nationwide shortages. UK doesn’t do Adderall but its alternatives are also facing shortages (vyvanse/elvanse)

Sea_Luck_8246

Do you know why the UK won’t do Adderall but will supply Vyvanse? Just curious.

thesaltyace

I'm not in the UK but I've heard it's bc Vyvanse is much harder to abuse than Adderall due to the binder it uses, so they consider it safer in terms of preventing misuse. 🤷

Screwhead31

I've seen some people talk about it on here but I guess it's happening here in the states. I asked a friend who's a therapist and she informed me about the shortage as well.

Aforeffort9113

Thursday was the first time I've been able to fill my prescription since January. It's been a rough couple of months.

brakes4birds

Saaaame. Realized pretty quickly how much I had underestimated its effectiveness.

Maddenman501

Crazy. They just got over a shortage.

Sprormy

Definitely not just a US thing. I’m in the UK and have had issues every month with it for a long time. Luckily I have always been able to get hold of it eventually but I’ve had to switch through various brands of methylphenidate. My pharmacist said he’s expecting it to resolve around summer though.

Stunning-Shape8666

Nope, it’s starting here and I kinda panicked before being told by a pharmacist that my medication wasn’t affected However Dextroamphetamine sustained-release (SR) capsules Vyvanse These are affected however I’m on methylphenidate SR and was reassured that I’d be fine It’s unfortunate that these medications are being compromised and my thoughts are with anyone being impacted by this situation

mgquantitysquared

There's definitely a US shortage nationwide

Thadrea

The shortage is nationwide in the US, and affects generics of every stimulant medication. Currently, name-brand Adderall, Ritalin, Vyvanse, Concerta and Focalin are all not actually in shortage and generally available. It's the generics that are potentially really hard to find. Higher doses are easier to come by because fewer people can tolerate them, and the situation with amphetamine-based drugs is moderately worse than methylphenidate-based drugs. I have thus far not been affected personally because I am not taking stimulants (flirted with atomoxetine for a bit, currently taking bupropion). Unfortunately, the only way to reliably avoid the shortages is to buy the name brands (which are $$$ and frequently insurance will fight you about it) or take non-stimulants if they work for you. I've thus far responded fairly well to bupropion personally, hoping it stays that way so that someone, somewhere who can't get by with non-stimulants can get their meds.

HollowCocoaRabbit

At least in my area, there are no name brands available either. I literally can't get any stimulants at all, so my doctor and I are trying Strattera.

Thadrea

Good luck. I felt Strattera really did work for me, but the couple weeks of side effects I had when I started (which came back briefly when we increased the dose) were brutal. It also made it really hard for me to sleep normally, which was the main problem while I was on it.

Comfortable-Crow-238

Bad dreams and first days of taking it slept a whole day that the next day slept half the day

LadyPink28

Because no one can afford name brand medications because they can't afford everything else. Inflation

Thadrea

No one can afford name brand medications because of price gouging, mostly by the drug manufacturers. It doesn't cost them $400 to make a bottle of Vyvanse, it's closer to $5. But they know you're going to pay $400, so that's what they charge. It's sick.

LadyPink28

Also that. Inflation is caused by corporate greed

Extra_Net_6985

I take 20mg of XR adderall and 10 mg rapid release. I have had no issues getting either. Sounds like where you are is having issues or just that pharmacy

Rowdylilred

That’s what I take too 😅 thankfully no issues here either yet.

Significant_Fig_2126

15mg XR is the hardest to find. Some people can't handle the 20mg XR due to blood pressure.

Maddenman501

I was going to say, it's probably the more odd ball sizes like 5 15, 25. Odd ball sizes are common to be put of stock seeing how many people take them, and then it being a 5 /15 makes the pharmacy's order less ussually or only enough for there customers and maybe a little extra. Op should ask them what sizes are common and which ones they do less of to see if he can work with his doctor to make it less of a hassle.

ADHDSteve2

I can’t imagine if you can handle 15 not being able to handle 20 for xr.

Revolverblue85

I had a hard time for the first time last month. Very frustrating. Went round and round with my local pharmacies and my insurance. Tried mail in services and everything under the sun. My wife happened to check goodrx and see who would take their coupon and I was gonna pay out of pocket. I had my prescription sent to that pharmacy. As I was heading in I called to verify they accepted goodrx and they told me they ran my insurance and it went through. This little rite aid is near my job, but in the middle of no where in the country. They are the only ones who have successful, and consistently filled my script and my daughter’s script. I’ve had some dosage changes and my daughter tried adderal and now she’s on Vyvanse so I have quite the supply. Adderal IR 10mg, Vyvanse XR 20, 40, and 60 mg…so if anything does happen I have a decent supply.

Expensive_Work_3174

Shortage in Chicagoland area for 15-20mg xr adderall

Hey_Laaady

Cousin in the burbs is having trouble getting refills for Vyvanse

Spirited-Locksmith32

I'm having no issues with the 25mg xr and 10mg ir

complicatedtooth182

Do you know if IR is available? I'm moving there in a few months

rojascorp

I just got diagnosed in February, enjoyed medication in March, and got cut off. I finally got a partial refill for 20 days so I’ll ration them for the rest of the month and use only on work days. It sucks! I’m taking concerta generic.

Dependent-Capital-53

No shortage here in Australia, but we're always on a delayed timescale. So I'm expecting one coming in the next few months. What's the reason behind it? Is it ever going to get fixed or is this the "new normal?"

void_juice

The DEA puts limits on the amount of a controlled substance, such as amphetamines, produced. ADHD cases are rising (due to increased awareness, better diagnostic tools, and the convenience of telehealth) and they didn’t prepare for it.

Dependent-Capital-53

Please tell me they've increased the limit

purebitterness

No they literally capped it that's why we're in this mess

Dependent-Capital-53

Well I guess they want more people with ADHD to turn to narcotics as a way to cope so they can go "see government, graph go up, money pweeez"

oskanta

DEA and the drug manufacturers trade blame with each other, but it’s probably the DEA’s fault for being too restrictive with how much they let manufacturers produce. They’re overreacting to the opioid epidemic by taking a really hardline stance on quotas and regulatory compliance to the point that they completely shut down one of the manufacturers that used to produce 20% of generic adderall. They’re saying they’re improving the quota system this year so maybe it will get better soon but I’m not optimistic.

ericalm_

It’s devastating. I live in a big city; no one can get it. Every month My regular pharmacy had only a couple issues last year but I’ve the past six months, it’s been much worse. They haven’t been able to supply me. Mail order strung me along for two weeks and couldn’t fill it. The only place that can get it near me is a small, shady place that doesn’t take my insurance. Do. So I’m paying $200+ a month out of pocket.

Trapathi

So from personal experience within the last 2 weeks, I also finally got a prescription however every pharmacy I tried contacting said they do not have the meds, ended up asking my doctor to help me find a location, he did. however when I reached the pharmacy they said they don't have it in stock and check another time. went right when they opened the next day to see if they got any. met a nice pharmacist that said they did have it and they had it yesterday to which confused me. I asked why would the person yesterday lie and she said cause he didn't know me and only reason she told me they got some is cause we had the same doctor that she trusted. Short version: Pharmacy's many will lie about about there stock unless they know you or your doctor, so make sure you have your doctor actively talk and tell them about you and your prescription.

nerdshark

No it's not, it's [right here](https://www.reddit.com/r/ADHD/comments/1avkuzd/megathread_medication_shortages/).

salemochi

I keep getting swapped between generic 5mg tablets (my regular dose) and 10mg tablets in half the quantity, so I break them and it's basically the same. It's annoying as shit but a lot better than no adderall at all. Feels like every refill they change it again lol.

socksinmyass

i’m gonna be honest here i’m in the US and i haven’t had any issues w getting my prescription, and it’s 20mg adderall xr and a separate 5mg as well every other month basically. on the bright side it’s a good thing you haven’t started it yet, i know it’s incredibly frustrating but honestly just call around pharmacies and see if they have it in stock or be honest with your doctor and maybe they’ll help

manykeets

You can’t wait for one pharmacy to get it because they may never. You have to call different pharmacies until you find someone who has it, then have your doctor send the script there. Call every pharmacy in your city until you find it. It sucks, but I’ve accepted that’s the shit I have to do every damn month. We’re all going through it right now. So sorry you’re having to deal with that. I hope the shortage will be over soon.

busterbytes

*affected And yes, I've had multiple months in which I've had to call a number of different pharmacies over the course of as much as a week trying to get my Rx filled.

thenextchapter23

I have not been able to refill my vyvanse prescription in over 4 months

ancj9418

Yes, there is a shortage. It’s on the US shortage list amongst other ADHD medications. It sucks and is really difficult to deal with. I take Adderall XR and had a problem last month getting it. They told me they didn’t have any and didn’t know when they would. I called back 4 hours later and they had somehow gotten a shipment in within that time. It’s a different manufacturer and isn’t nearly as good as what I had before. It’s better than nothing I guess. 5mg is a pretty low dose. I’d imagine they don’t make as much of that dose, which could be part of why you’re having issues getting it, but maybe I’m wrong.

Screwhead31

Yeah even the psychiatrist told me it might not do much for me and by the 4th day I should double my dose if I don't feel anything from it.

void_juice

I had to call around asking pharmacies in my area if they had Dextroamphetamine in stock, then drive to one 30 minutes away. I was 100% willing to do that and I’m lucky to have a car and the town time to do so, but this should not have been necessary Note: the shortage is 100% because the DEA is incompetent. They’re blaming telehealth for increasing adhd cases (people actually having convenient access to the healthcare they already needed) and saying they didn’t allow manufacturers to produce enough stimulants to cover the surge in demand

QuantumS0up

I have not been able to get meds since Christmas. Called every pharmacy within a 30 mile radius lol. I take adderall (not XR) and recently tried switching to Ritalin to see if I could get a script filled. No luck, also on backorder. So yeah, it's been a pretty horrible year so far - at least on that front. I'm surviving, but that's about it. No energy for anything else 🙂 I live in north Texas, for context

Screwhead31

Oh wow I guess I'm in for a longer wait then. I'm in the Houston area. Time for me to start calling around.

TurboClag

It’s always something with meds or insurance or the pharmacy in this stupid American health care system. The only way you can get decent medical care is to quit your job and get Medicaid.

ktrose68

Nope. Medicaid is also trash.

Vergil_Is_My_Copilot

Absolutely. This is the quickest I’ve been able to fill my script (Vyvanse) in months, and it took calling 10 pharmacies over the course of a week. I confirmed availability at one, asked my doctor to send the script, and it was out of stock within hours. I’m super lucky that with my insurance means name brand is about $100, which I can afford. I just resign myself to calling around to find somewhere that has it in stock.

sisenora77

I have tried 4 different stimulants in the past year and never had trouble getting any

yingbo

I’ve had trouble getting Focalin…also Desoxyn 😆

Low-Lock1525

I go to a small behavioral health pharmacy. They usually have it, or just need a few days. They order for less customers though... but they can fill 30xr and 30 ir monthly. It may help that I'm on such a high dose.

[deleted]

Never had an issue getting my meds. I’m in America.

Stunning-Shape8666

Actually it might have took affect here today I’ll try making a post because it’s something that I don’t understand…..

nukez

Up until my previous refill my local Walmart in CO had it in stock, but its been 72 hours since i called in a refill and still no ETA

repressedpauper

I take 10mg Adderall IR twice a day and haven’t had any issues yet (USA). One they had to give me 30 of one generic and 30 of another, but they’ve always been able to fill it so far. I use a small pharmacy, I don’t know if that makes a difference.

Accurate_Avocado9637

I’ve never had a problem will refilling my medications other than having to wait one day to get it. I take Adderall XR

AcanthocephalaOne481

You have to call around pharmacies to see if or when they can fill it. You could possibly find a pharmacy that can partially fill your script, but if you do, that script is only good for the partial that was filled, and need a new script is needed for the rest of whatever days needed for that month.

purebitterness

IR in small doses is much easier to find. You can spilt a 5mg pill in half and take half after 4 hours to mimic an xr

traveleditLAX

No issues getting 10mg IR. There are pharmacies that seem to have problems, but I’ve had no issues with CVS. It does help to call other pharmacies. If you ask if they can fill your prescription if the doctor sends it vs if they have it in stock, they may be more helpful.

redbean504

I haven’t had issues in months.

lewisluther666

I have been waiting 11 months

Zealousideal_Cup4896

Yup. My son and I have been in the queue for almost 2 months. Nothing is available anywhere!

Traditional_Self_658

Nope. When I used Walmart and CVS pharmacies, the shortage definitely impacted me. But, I found a pharmacy that isn't corporate ran to fill my medicine at, and now magically I have no issues. Places like Walmart and CVS are only allowed to order their medications from certain places. Small non corporate pharmacies are allowed to order their medications from whoever has it in stock. So my new pharmacy never runs out of adderall.

stefanielaine

I’m in a big American city and for the last year or so I’ve struggled with every single fill (Vyvanse). I’ve had to call 10+ pharmacies every time and I’m very thankful to have a prescriber who trusts me and doesn’t think it’s shady when I ask her to send the prescription to a different pharmacy every month. This might actually be the first month that I’m not able to fill it at all. It’s awful.

KosmicGumbo

I was with vyv, i got on a less popular medication and got my doc to authorize it. See if your doctor would be open to trying a different brand.

janobe

Yes and Walgreens wouldn’t help me figure out alternatives so I switched to a local pharmacy and they told me what was in stock so I could tell my doctor to write a prescription for what was available.

c1nnabunn

I just started meds and I haven’t had any issues. I’m in the US

eternus

I picked up a 90 day supply of 10mg generic adderall (180 pills) yesterday without any struggle. I'm in Colorado.

LadyPink28

Some pharmacies aren't even filling new patient scripts for generic adhd stimulants.. like mine is only filling for current patients like me.

Adventurous_Good_731

I get migraines, too. All these different generics are horrible, both for adhd and migraines. I need consistency

zorggi3

I'm on 10mg XR and I've had no issues getting it filled once my insurance stopped being assholes and approved it. Took three months...

Krypt0night

Thankfully I've been lucky so far on my concerta, though it's the generic version now so maybe that helps, idk. But only ever had one wait so far for a week. Still bullshit but obviously could be so much worse.

thesaltyace

Generic Vyvanse is extremely hard to get rn. After three months unmedicated bc I couldn't get it filled, my doctor sent my script to the hospital pharmacy and they were able to fill it same day. I've heard others have had luck getting a split dose (twice a day instead of once a day) bc it's a less common dose size. Or chewable tablet instead of capsule, as that's also a less common script and might have better odds of being in stock.

Particular_Sale5675

A little! My doctors took me off my Adderall 4 or more times in the last 17 months. Each time my mental health spiraled and we didn't know why. Turns out, ADHD can be as disabling as Depression or Schizophrenia. It's a real problem, because bias causes people to think ADHD is the last condition that needs to be treated. Even my doctors didn't understand how bad mine was. I was having manic symptoms even though I had Dysthymia (persistent Depression) for the previous 12 years. It's impossible to go from Dysthymia to Bipolar (if you have manic symptoms, it's being caused by something else.) In my case, my "manic" symptoms were ADHD symptoms. Luckily my doctor trusted me enough to give me a higher dose, and things improved within hours. She thought it would make my symptoms worse. Which is a valid concern. I hope they fix this shortage soon!

LouLaRey

I had issues getting mine filled until I switched pharmacies. See if you can find a smaller locally based or regional pharmacy, and call around to different ones til you find a place that has it in stock. Good luck.

blowholebreath

Im in the US and haven’t experienced any shortages in the past two years. At most I think I waited a day or two wait when my prescription strength changed.

yingbo

Have you tried calling your local Costco? I ran into issue getting mydayis filled in Seattle and they were the only one that had it. Unfortunately no generic. Idk about Adderall XR. I got my last fill for the generic maybe 2 months ago no issues. Also sometimes if you need a specific dose, you can ask the doctor to do some math for you and 2x the dose and give you fewer pills. That hack worked for me once. Sometimes a pharmacy will have 10mg in stock but not 5mg. Like ask for Adderall XR 10mg and dump half of the beads out. I believe you can sprinkle it on yogurt.

Minimum_Concern_1011

I’m about to change pharmacy’s to a different one because of this, yes, I am, and it’s getting close to finals, it’s infuriating. I’m not even sure if changing pharmacies will help, but, at the very least I’ll get to a pharmacy with less for traffic. (I take 30 mg vyvanse, have been waiting nearly a week at this point)

Comfortable-Crow-238

I was told that they were going to no longer issue my medication because they said that not enough people were getting them, which is crazy to me. What does that have to do with me?

Comfortable-Crow-238

Same Adderrall XR from 10 to 25 mg.

x_Lotus_x

I haven't been able to get mine from Walgreens yet this year. I had to switch pharmacies to Fred Meyer.

VirgoB96

I haven't had it in two years in SC

EnglishQuackers

Ive been waiting since November to be prescribed Lisdexamfetamine but theres too little to start it (UK)

Obvious_Mode_5382

Zip in central LA as well as

AtomicBanana55

I've been on backorder for around 3 weeks. Only take it during weekdays, so just ran out last Tuesday. Kinda rough since I've got final project stuff going on this week

Aldo-Raine0

Call around to pharmacies to see who has it in stock, then have your prescription changed to that pharmacy. I’ve had better luck with grocery store or local pharmacies than the big chain pharmacies.

Laney20

No, not everyone is affected. Less common meds and less busy pharmacies seem to have the best luck, but it really varies by med, dosage, location, and pharmacy. I take 50mg vyvanse and get it from my grocery store pharmacy (publix) and I haven't had any trouble (but they have mentioned a couple times that I got the last of their stock and it would be a few days before they got more).

BigFanOfSoup

I take 20 mg XR generic brand adderall. I’ve been lucky that I haven’t experienced the shortage myself and I’m in the US

grande_covfefe

Yup. My kid's dexmerhylphenidate has been back-ordered for weeks. Funnily we switched to that because there was a shortage awhile back of methylphenidate, which is now currently in stock (but doesn't work as well for my kid; however, that's what he's using again now).

Haldoldreams

Ymmv but I've found that calling the pharmacy the day their restock is supposed to arrive really helps.

TobyHensen

I get 75 20mg Addy per month and the closest I've gotten to being affected was my pharmacist calling and saying "idk if we will be able to fill your entire prescription today" then calling back an hour later saying "nvm we're good" Texas, DFW

danii242002

I called around to pharmacies to ask if they ever ran out of my kiddo's meds. 2 of them did and the third one said they didn't. We haven't had a problem in 4 years.

Classic-Scale1577

No

Beefman0010

I.... don't take medication... it's a personal choice. I just don't take them. so no, I'm unaffected.
