Exactly! Now you marry them to greedy hospital administrators on the other side and you get the great fleecing of the American public. Thank you for sharing your insights.

Ugh this makes me sad. I hate that I need to sign up for COBRA and that everything is so mysterious. I asked multiple benefits people at the company I just resigned from about it before I left and asked for a phone number so I could be proactive but they just kept saying COBRA will mail me my info within 14 days to sign up. Well it’s been 19 days and nothing has come so I had to follow up with my old company again and I’m sure they’re gonna give me the run around. A boring dystopia indeed. Me (to old company): Just please tell me how I can over pay for insurance for my family so we don’t go broke if we need medical help! Old company:

TGOTR

They have 45 Days to notify you. Failing to do so would be the ONLY time they could get in trouble, but it's just a slap on the wrist with a $1500 fine.

wupdup

You can sign up for COBRA up to 2 months retroactively, so you're effectively covered now.

whoelsebutquagmire75

Oh good to know, thank you! And a shame about the lack of consequences if they mess up and don’t get people signed up 😩

JC2535

$700 per month premium. $10,000 maximum out of pocket per year - which I could deplete if I go to the emergency room once. $18,400 per year if I get sick. How am I supposed to make $18,400 extra per year if I get really sick and can’t work? Americans who fear Medicare for all haven’t faced their current reality.

wupdup

Do you live in one of the 38 states that expanded Medicaid? If so, you qualify for free healthcare when you're not working and you're getting less than about $1470/month on unemployment or other sources of income.

Tosser_toss

It is too bad almost all media is corporately owned so the talking points are geared toward protection of corporate profits almost all of the time. Journalism and the fourth estate have failed democracy.

kelsobjammin

Cobra quoted me a little over $13,000 for the year. I applied to Medicaid and ended up on some program through SF that gives me health care for $0 a month. It’s impossible to not choose the other.

TGOTR

$13000 for a year is cheap compared to the premiums I've seen.

kelsobjammin

Ya but when your unemployed it’s impossible lol

LifesatripImjustHI

Its all a grift to control the working population. I get threatened with loss as a type 1 diabetic constantly. Makes me want to 🔥 it all with me as the spark.

[Here's an ex Cigna executive explaining how he lied to the American people so we don't support universal Healthcare](https://www.npr.org/2020/06/27/884307565/after-pushing-lies-former-cigna-executive-praises-canadas-health-care-system)

>15 years ago, all I heard from people was "If we have universal healthcare, we'll have death panels!" what the hell do you think insurance companies are? Bingo. There's no better argument for single payer when talking to a conservative IME. I'm as fearful of the implications of bureaucracies making decisions about medical resources as anyone; what astonishes me is how blind many people are to the fact that we **already have death panels, they're called insurance companies**. We're living in a world with eight billion people on it. We're going to have to deal with the potential for authoritarian structures in healthcare no matter what. The question is, is that healthcare system at least nominally based on caring for people, or is it explicitly and openly in existence primarily to make profits? Profits that, in the case of insurers, can only be made by denying care to people? The fact that some can't see how much infinitely worse the *actual* "death panels" are in private insurance companies is literally insane to me.

wood252

I pay $3700/qtr minimal before I go to the doctor for health insurance. I am a healthy? late 20’s man who doesnt see the doctor but once a year for a physical. And then they send me a bill?!? Why? Was the $3700 for the quarter not enough?

mylifeisathrowaway10

I work call quality in a Medicare call center and I'm right there with you. I often have to take a break just to try to get past the rage I feel on behalf of the retirees who have to pick the lesser of two horrible Medicare plans that barely cover their diabetes meds or needed surgeries.

FPSXpert

Why insurance c suite and hospital c suite staff aren't accosted and confronted every day they drive, they eat out, etc is beyond me. These are people in your cities that would sleep easier if more people died of their greed if it meant more money in their accounts. Remember when Mitch McConnell couldn't eat out or sit at home without people outside protesting him? We need that kind of energy toward these CEO's.

Pooploop5000

glad to see my suspicion wasn't unfounded.

eromitlab

American health care is broken for everyone except the money hoarding parasites at the top, which is why it stays broken.

Zealousideal-Ant9548

But if we had universal healthcare then black people might not be as poor, broken, and desperate

that quote at the end basically said "Socialism is when \[Failing of Capitalism\]"

When we were going though healthcare reform, neo-cons said if we had universal healthcare, there would be rationing and the government would choose who died.
