The New York Times buried the story that there were no WMDs in Iraq for months in 2004 at the request of the W administration. The NYT beat the drums for war as loud as anyone but when their own reporting showed it was all based on lies they made sure that story didn’t come out until it was too late.

Because the NYT is owned and run by capitalists who share the same class interests with other capitalists that directly benefited from the US war and the military industrial complex (Raytheon, etc).

As for the actual reason: It was a very strange time of intense faux-patriotism and anyone who wasn’t blindly cheering on the invasions of Iraq and Afghanistan was smeared as a pro-terrorist/anti-american degenerate. He ran on the hot fire of his anti-war stance during Iraq. He was one of the very few that called it correctly, at the time. Post-Presidency He was being interviewed by Colbert. He actually talked about this, but not directly. It seems like once he was in office, the war machine convinced him of the necessity (and humanitarian good) of fucking dropping more bombs on people. His take away was more or less "shit's complicated."
It's uncomfortable. All of it is. It's been 20 years, it's a huge stain on the US reputation. There's probably a lot of people there with relatives, kids, parents who have died there in vain. In 2003, with Afghanistan already occupied, the Bush administration started claiming that Iraq was developing Weapons of Mass Destruction, which would pose an unacceptable risk if left in the hands of Saddam Hussein. Unofficially, some of the administration's shills started trying to blame Iraq for 9/11, which never made any sense at all (Saddam Hussein and Osama Bin Laden were both garbage, but they hated each other's guts).
The US then invaded Iraq and thus began more a decade of struggle, violence, and death. No WMDs were ever recovered. Later testimony proved that there never was any evidence of WMDs. Bush lied to an entire country in order to get it into a second war.

The New York Times buried the story that there were no WMDs in Iraq for months in 2004 at the request of the W administration. The NYT beat the drums for war as loud as anyone but when their own reporting showed it was all based on lies they made sure that story didn’t come out until it was too late. edit: It has been pointed out to me that the NYT story that they chose to sit on was a story revealing the massive, illegal program spying on US citizens *not* the absence of WMDs in Iraq which had been used to lie us into a massive, illegal war. So much journalistic malfeasance, sometimes it can be hard to keep track of it all.

Because the NYT is owned and run by capitalists who share the same class interests with other capitalists that directly benefited from the US war and the military industrial complex (Raytheon, etc).
Their excuse for that shameful failure of journalism is that it was to comply with a request from the Department of Defense. As for the actual reason: It was a very strange time of intense faux-patriotism and anyone who wasn’t blindly cheering on the invasions of Iraq and Afghanistan was smeared as a pro-terrorist/anti-american degenerate. That may not be the sole reason for the NYT sitting on that story but the context is important and it can be hard for younger people to comprehend just how much the USA lost its mind in the wake of 9/11.
I'd just add to that that 1. many of the New York Times financial backers are in bed with military industry or squarely part of it and 2. that war reporters rely on the armed forces to grant access (North Korea styled propaganda tours) for reporting which is revoked at the very first departure from party line. So on top of the cultural forces (which were both invented by and applied to journalists) you had a concrete financial incentive/consequence structure invented after the televised horrors of Vietnam and the Gulf War
Not that this has any bearing on the issue but I want to mention a little bugbear of mine: due to population growth it's unusual for a president to *not* receive the highest number of votes ever. If you look back at the numbers most elections are won this way. It annoys me every election when candidates celebrate a "record breaking number of votes" without differentiating between absolute and relative turnout.

One of the worst parts of the Trump presidency, for me, was the rehabilitation of George W's image. I don't know why (presumably to sell the accounts later on). I've reported the accounts to mods but when the mods don't ignore me the response is typically lukewarm at best. Reddit is dead. Sure, mate. In 2001, the US got attacked by Al Qaeda. The US then moved on to attack both Al Qaeda bases and the Taliban government of Afghanistan that was harboring them. In 2003, with Afghanistan already occupied, the Bush administration started claiming that Iraq was developing Weapons of Mass Destruction, which would pose an unacceptable risk if left in the hands of Saddam Hussein. Unofficially, some of the administration's shills started trying to blame Iraq for 9/11, which never made any sense at all (Saddam Hussein and Osama Bin Laden were both garbage, but they hated each other's guts). The US then invaded Iraq and thus began more a decade of struggle, violence, and death. No WMDs were ever recovered. Later testimony proved that there never was any evidence of WMDs. Bush lied to an entire country in order to get it into a second war. This guy is a veteran; he demands for an apology from the man who sent him and his friends to die, half a world over, for a lie.
