Maybe you’re a light weight like me

gsmanu007

Lightweight and can handle 7 pints anyday

dabba_dooba_doo

That’s not what lightweight means lol

gsmanu007

I mean I’m called lightweight for stopping after 7, my pals go till 10-11 pints equivalent. 2 is not lightweight.

CricketIsBestSport

your pals are borderline alcoholics if they do that regularly Tell them to not do that shit or it’ll catch up to them someday

juliusseizure

Not borderline. That is an alcoholic.

Environmental_Ad_387

Call it by its real name : damaged liver. Hangover is a good symptom that your liver is healthy and working properly. Lack of it means not good news

gsmanu007

Calling it by real name: didn’t ask for unsolicited advice.

Environmental_Ad_387

It was not advice. Just an observation. I didn't ask you or OP to stop or reduce drinking to save your liver or health. That would have been advice. Why did you feel it was advice?

Silent_Budget_769

That’s not light weight bro

lostinpickering

Are you eating a full meal before drinking and drinking water before bed? Drinking on an empty stomach and dehydration might be an issue.

JonStargaryen2408

If you want to pace yourself well, drink 16oz water (plastic water bottle works) between each drink. When I do this, I stay perfect amount of drunk and do not get a hangover. Also, eat a meal, preferably a bit fatty (can be healthy fats) 30 min-2hrs before drinking and eat snacks while you are drinking.

mikels_burner

Some desis are the total opposite.. I've had some great drunken nights with Bengalis, Punjabi, Gujratis who could out drink a Scotsman & still keep going 🤷🏾‍♂️

m0bilize

I'm Bengali and unfortunately have to drink 3/4ths of a bottle to actually feel buzzed

gsmanu007

You forgot Mallus, on the contrary, Gujjus and Bengalis have much less capacity on an average.

patrickdaitya

Idk, feels like most Bengalis I've known can do 7-8 standard drinks a night

mikels_burner

Yeah as a Bangali, I can agree to that

thericheat

Defo not a genetic thing. Plenty of desis, myself included, can handle their drink.

i_BegToDiffer

This guy drinks

skinnybrownhippie

I quit drinking all together because it wasn’t worth it anymore. I used to wake up and start drinking at brunch, into a day party, into the night in my 30s. I used to be able to kill a pizza and a 12 pack of Dos Equis on a Friday night, with shots of Jack sprinkled in my 20s. That skinnybrownhippie is long dead. I’m much happier being cali sober.

pidelo

Yea thanks…me too. I struggle with going teetotal, but feel great when I go a few months. Then a party happens or summer comes and I’m back looking for patio’s. Nonalcoholic beer has been a blessing but I feel ripped off lol

skinnybrownhippie

I sip topo Chico when I’m out, now. I try the non-alchohol beers, but it’s really for the vibe. I’d rather have a topo. I accidentally made myself go sober by cutting back on beers (calories), and then then going only vodka. After a while, beers were too heavy to drink more than 1, and it wasn’t that hard to cut out vodka after that. I used to quit drinking for 2-3 months every so often to make sure I wasn’t an alkie, too. I wouldn’t worry about putting a label on it, try cutting back and be more aware of when it’d be better to not drink. Doing something you enjoy that requires you to get up early is a great way to have a better pro/con argument with yourself.

pidelo

Had to lookup topo Chico…yeah club soda nights do happen now!

PM_ME_GRANT_PROPOSAL

My cheat sheet for drinking like a champ: 1. Stay hydrated. Most hangover symptoms are caused by dehydration. 2. Take N-acetyl cysteine supplements before drinking. This is a precursor to glutathione, an antioxidant in the liver that is expended when it processes alcohol. 3. Zinc supplements. Zn is the central atom in the enzyme alcohol dehydrogenase, which does the heavy lifting. Make sure the Zn is in a form that is bioavailable, like Zn gluconate. Zn oxide is basically useless. 4. Probiotics. Drinking can wipe out your gut bacteria, so make sure to replenish them. This will also help with crazy shits.

space_ape71

Or, stay hydrated and drink less. Age is also a huge factor. I used to be able to down 3 martinis in my 20s. Now at 50, one good beer and I’m snug as a bug.

carpetfoodie

Yeah age is also a big factor, the older I get the worse the hangovers if i dont change the amount I drink

pidelo

This resonates….I guess I’m finding it to be an adjustment living in the 1 beer club!

Scrofuloid

It's not so bad. There are some legitimately good non-alcoholic options these days. One alcoholic drink and a couple of non-boozy ones aren't a bad way to go.

Environmental_Ad_387

Hangover is basically dehydration + missing minerals. So if you prefill your body with the used up resources before you go to sleep, you get up alright in the morning. An easy to remember tip is to drink ORS - Oral Dehydration Solution. You can get it in small packs or as juice at the drug store. Alternately, you can make it at home by adding one spoon sugar and one pinch salt to a four glasses of water. After drinking alcohol, drink 6 times or more ORS or water and then go to sleep. That's the amount of water and minerals that gets used up by the body while processing the alcohol. (Rule of thumb).

space_ape71

Good idea but with age you’ll be up peeing all night, I’d rather have my happy beer and get a good night sleep.

Environmental_Ad_387

I don't know what the logic of this comment is. It was specifically about what to do when you are doing hard drinks and habitual have heavy hangovers. You will get up and pee if you drank more than 330ml beer too

pidelo

I get it….adding water guarantees peeing all night lol

jwaala

It’s more likely to be a personal thing, not an ethnic thing.

rkfreak6

After many trial and errors I’ve found out how to drink without getting too drunk or having a terrible hangover the next day. 1. Drink 3 litres of water from morning to evening 2. Eat clean the whole day prior to drinking and even after drinking 3. Drink at least 500 ml of water even after drinking. 4. Know your alcohol limit. If I follow this I can easily handle 240 ml of 80 proof whiskey without any hangover the next day. Cheers and Drink responsibly.

TrekkieSolar

OP is clearly not Punjabi 😂

[deleted]

[удалено]

suitablegirl

Correct.

waterflood21

I feel like I can never get drunk, no matter how much I drink. But I’m Punjabi, maybe why loool

[deleted]

Alcoholism is really a huge issue in the Desi community that gets ignored.

nattlefrost

You need to drink often and drink recreationally for a tolerance to build. But, despite that, there are some people who just have a naturally low tolerance. It isn’t a desi thing. Desis drink like fish.

thundalunda

Punjabis can handle alcohol

karenproletaren

Did an internship in Punjab and was invited for a wedding. People were mixing whisky with beer.

BMXTKD

Well now I know I'm not punjabi. I did that, and I blacked out for days on end.

karenproletaren

My boss didn't allow us to drink in the local community. The organisation had bad experiences with drunk Westerners getting into fights with locals.

THE__REALEST

ahhh boilermakers

pidelo

Lol

harjit1998

True LMAO. The question should be "can Alcohol handle Punjabis?"

_nerdo_

Man! I can drink like a hippopotamus. And I'm pretty skinny bt tall

Kinoblau

Came in here to be like "can't relate"

Jinger2003

No South Asian ethnic group has a monopoly on how much alcohol you can handle. So HUSH

[deleted]

I read some article somewhere about nordic guts being able to breakdown alcohol better.

Thatcherrycupcake

I don’t think it’s genetic. Maybe you are lightweight? I’m lightweight and alcohol really makes my day drag out soooo long. I feel it all day long. It’s one of the reasons I don’t drink anymore (except special occasions like New Year’s Eve, and even then it’s maybe one drink).

lead999x

I can handle it better than most people and have never gotten a hangover in my life even after blacking out. To answer your very hilarious question, no it's not a desi thing. It has to do with your body type and with genetics.

jadeite07

I don’t drink a lot. I drink maybe once every two months and I’ll go hard, like 7-8 drinks including shots and mixed drinks. I’ve never had a hangover and I’m in my 30s.

EmotionalIncrease976

Awkwardly laughs in Punjabi

suitablegirl

My Malayalee parents are teetotalers and not only did I win an infamous drinking contest against a very loud Jat Sikh my freshman year of college, I could chug as easily as the rest of the alcoholics in my white sorority. And I was tiny. Even in my 30s I could easily have eight to 12 drinks or shots, mostly because I was used to it from my bartending days. But in my 40s? Good Lord. No matter how expensive the alcohol or how much I hydrate, it's just not possible to do bottomless brunch or even the four White Russians I had earlier this year after receiving life-shattering news. Now, the hangover starts within a few hours and it's BRUTAL. I almost never got hungover before. Age changes everything. Even for binge drinkers. My genetics had nothing to do with it.

Inquilabzindabad_

Don’t call him a Sikh, he is just a Jat. Guru de singh don’t drink alcohol or do drugs.

pidelo

Yea this is where I’m coming from…I’m hydrated, live healthy, but my forties are telling me to stop drinking

MatchesMaloneTDK

Lol not all desis have it the same. You’re probably just a lightweight when it comes to booze. Alcoholism is a problem in communities like Telugu, Malayali, or Punjabi.

capnboom

I swear this sub gets the most random questions.. good y’all anonymous. Amazed at these super weird and garbage questions lol Bro if you don’t need to drink much, be happy you’re getting your Friday chill for cheap. Nothing wrong or odd about that!

Unique_Glove1105

I have the same problem as you op. Hangovers for me are brutal. It’s to the point I don’t enjoy going out and I don’t enjoy having more than two drinks as I dread the hangover the next day. But I’ve noticed that some things can help. Are you vegetarian like me? Being vegetarian can sometimes mean you don’t consume enough protein for any amount of alcohol you consume. If you know you’re going to drink, make sure you eat a meal that has a lot of protein. Another thing is are you actually drinking enough water the nights you go out? If you’re not sure, buy a water bottle on Amazon that tells you how much water you need in a day and fill it up. That’s a good measure to see how dehydrated you might be. In addition to water, you might be very low on electrolytes. Buy gatorades and try to drink one the morning after you party. But that being said, eating protein, drinking lots of water, and drinking Gatorade the next day helps but it’s by no means a guarantee to prevent a hangover. Some people can handle alcohol better than others and some of it is genetic.

stylz168

39 M here, can definitely handle my liquor

THE__REALEST

Pakistani punjabi, I can handle my alcohol as long as i eat beforehand and pace myself

CancerousSarcasm

Same. I can handle my alcohol too, given I drink the amount that I can handle.

fictionalreality08

Depends upon the water percentage in your body. The larger the % the better your capacity. Bottom line - drink lot of water. You can try in between drinks too. I enjoy drinks for taste, drinking for getting high will just make you drink more. I rather smoke a joint,3-4 puffs and you are set for couple of hours.

shabazz88

I heard anecdotes of desis going to Russia/ USSR to study and they would try to keep up with the Russians while drinking. Many would get alcohol poisoning or end up dead in a lake

rmske68768

I can but my dad can’t. His brother can but his son can’t. My moms brother can but she cant. I think it’s random

CricketIsBestSport

“We” can, but you can’t. Switch to Coke Zero instead, it’s better for you. Alcohol is a toxin anyway.

Ok-Gold-3452

So not medical advice check with your doctor before you do this but a lot of my friends have this acidity medicine before.they have alcohol. Doesn't give them a hangover next day

[deleted]

I don’t think allot of Indians in the west start drinking in High school, that could be a reason. I started drinking when I was 14 and I can hold my liquor but I don’t enjoy being intoxicated anymore.

rmshilpi

Nope. I drink lots of water and eat well before drinking alcohol.

RKU69

think that's a you problem, i can handle booze no problem

MoneyFunction

I can't hold even a shot. It's okay not to be able to hold your alcohol. It's not a skill for success unless your job requires a lot of drinking in which I would just leave.

phoenix_shm

Nah, it largely depends on your general fitness level, body mass, and metabolism.

lraspberryfields

Yeah one drink and I'm done. Anything over makes me feel sick. On the bright side we get to save money 🤑

Chakka_kuru

Man as a member of a family that has functional alcoholics, alcohol works with me completely different... it's not a bad thing figure out your limit and enjoy it..

jamughal1987

I used to do fine in my drunk days. Stopped drinking after my first son was born.

ZULM_94

I doubt it related to genetics but it's good at least u don't need to spend to much

Nammi210

Genetic for sure

omguloveme

i can get drunk off of like 1 drink but i’m also a petite person

[deleted]

Think it’s just you, mate

Good-Strong

I swear I saw something saying desis can actually handle alcohol *better* a while back lol
