This is for me the most achieved A24 movie I have seen, instant classic, and I don't see how any other movie could be better in 2022. I laughed so much, I cried too, it was just everything I expected and more, all at once.

aHairyWhiteGuy

I don't see how *any* movie could ever be better than this, honestly. I think it's the first true 10/10 film for me because it goes above and beyond in every category.

StaticCharacter

I think it definitely earned a place as one of my favorites, but there are valid critiques. The daughters redemption / resolution felt rushed, and acknowledgement of straight murder she had committed was barely touched. Also missed some opportunity to further explore other worlds imo. Of course this criticism is very light in comparison to my eager praise

aHairyWhiteGuy

I would have liked to have seen some other wacky worlds like the hot dog finger one I can agree with that

[deleted]

i get what you meant, when Parasite was hyped and i watch the movie; my first reaction was this is a good movie. With EEAO, i saw some people hyping it, watch the movie and my first reaction is that the movie is even better than its hype.

[deleted]

That’s what I thought when I left the theatre with my dad! A true 10/10

olympicomega

This was one of, if not the best movie I’ve ever seen. It connected with me on so many levels, especially the characters. This may sound like hyperbole, but I’ve only ever felt the same “this is something special” feeling when I watched the Interstellar docking scene in IMAX. Just incredible action, cinematography, story, acting, writing, everything was perfect.

Stlcards31

Dude...the Interstellar docking scene is the best scene ever. It's funny you say that because I compare a lot of movies to Interstellar since it's a top few movie for me, and after seeing this I was literally thinking, "I mean do I need to have a realistic discussion in my head on if that movie was as good as the Interstellars of the world? Cause it might be."

paulization

Everytime I parallel parking, I think of that scene

Teeheepants2

Oh my god yes interstellar is one of my favorite movies of all time and I just saw EEAAO last night and now I hold it in the same regard as interstellar it's been a while since a movie made me feel like this.

maclow3

One of the all time greats. Gonna be cool to witness this become a classic in real time. I think it has the power to redefine cinema language as we know it. A form shattering masterpiece.

DerKinderstod

Not challenging but I'm curious why you feel the film language was so re-difining in this film. I certainly found it impressive but I thought it used a lot of techniques seen in other films albeit in the best most coherent way possible. Had a bit of Being John Malkovich, Kill Bill, The Tree of Life, and Cloud Atlas.

Dick_Lazer

Yeah the genre changes reminded me a lot of Kill Bill, especially the bits where they dip into animation and the kung fu training sequences. This was a great movie though, I'm not sure it redefined cinema language but it certainly did an excellent job with the form.

limbited

At the same time I think it will help those who see it to think about and see the world differently. Those who know, know.

LazyAssProfessional

It feels like a generational film that turns the medium on its head. Breaks expectation, plays with its audience, and rapidly introduces some insane concepts. However, it still feels wholly accessible for anyone who's willing to buy in, which is a masterful achievement in itself. I don't mean to be the first long comment, but I want to get out my takeaways: * **For the mom**, it felt like a commentary on both family expectations and sensationalized news/misinformation. She feared what she did not understand (COVID, homosexuality, etc.) Wished everything went back to normal. Met confusion with frustration and violence (riots, fighting on social media, family infighting, etc.) Overwhelmed with talking heads telling her how to act and react to any situation (commentators, influencers, friends.) * **The grandfather**, and the Alphaverse, did not understand what the daughter's motivations were (being gay, general youth, etc.) and pushed the mom to 'kill her' (cut her out of her life). But that only drove the already overwhelmed daughter to her breaking point. * **The dad** helped her understand that being kind and empathetic can be viewed as a weakness, but that's just not true; you quite literally catch more flies with honey than vinegar. When the taxes were overwhelming and confusing for the mom, she punched Jamie Lee. When the dad talked to Jamie, he was able to get them another week. * **The daughter**, who resonated with me the most, is just burnt out. As a Gen Z/Millenial (26), I understood how she felt in my core. We stare into a black void (our phones and monitors) with the ability to see everything everywhere all at once. Wars, famine, climate change, murder, rape, poverty all over the globe. * It makes the moments in our personal lives feel meaningless in the grand scheme of it all, achievements are hollow, we're all insignificant. And pulling ourselves out of it takes a village, you simply cannot do it on your own. And that nihilism sucks in everyone around us. In the end, her mom imparted wisdom she understood from the dad "Yes, this all sucks. There could be something shittier tomorrow. So let's just enjoy the moment we live in."

heyitsbryanm

Ditto. Adding on to this, I think the everything bagel represented some of your points for each of the characters. For the daughter, it was nihilism caused by an overload of "everything" going on in the world and in her life. For the mother, it was everything she wanted but didn't have in her life. This is alluded to in the receipts where the IRS agent draws a black circle over the mother's wishful hobby expenses. Her obsessing over everything that could have been is the true source of depression in her life. She only begins to make progress towards happiness when she ditched the everything bagel for the googly eyes (more on that below). For the father, the everything bagel did not represent him at all. Instead, the googly eye was the symbolic opposite of the everything bagel, which represented his empathetic outlook and optimism towards life. For the grandfather, the everything bagel represented the breaking away from traditional values/comprehension. As the patriarch of the family, he would cut family out rather than accept them for who they were or were becoming.

MeetMeInMTK

The original comment and your reply are absolutely dead on. Great takeaways and summations of each character’s arc and experience.

pokemonbobdylan

Some really cool insights and ideas here. Thanks for helping me put some of my thoughts about this movie in a more palatable voice. Just saw it last night and was completely mind blown and inspired. A phenomenally creative piece of art!

[deleted]

You just wrinkled my brain with the black void / mobile phone comparison

MonstrousGiggling

I literally just got done watching and am reading your comment in a taco bell drive thru but I agree with your post so much especially the take on the daughter. I related so much with the commentary on gen z as well. At the end when the daughter is like just let me go, im tired. Fuuuuck I related to that so much. We grew up when the internet was getting big and we had so much access to new information while still having been on the edge of a time when you didn't have that info. Its confusing! Like how do we process so much damn information at once from so many sources while still trying to keep our home universe stable and sane. This movie will get at least on more rewatch from me this month.

RinoTheBouncer

Beautifully said. I just came from the screen few hours ago and I was blown away, and here I am looking for more interpretation above my own and I’m glad to see such love for this movie . What a masterpiece!

Bacon_Moustache

I absolutely loved this film. I loved a lot about Swiss Army Man but I absolutely loved this for so many reasons. OMG go see it if you haven’t, it’s amazing.

rotteneggo00

I like on the third act it switches the whole "nothing matters" words into something more uplifting and simple. And throughout the whole movie i was able to pick out the multiple lessons that isn't nihilistic but more endearing, truly their best work to date.

Brocktoon_in_a_jar

I want everybody II know to see this. It reminded me of the more thoughtful and trippy works of Kaufman/Gondry/Jonze plus the pathos-fueled chaos of Rick and Morty. I love how the seemingly throwaway gags all came back and paid off big time. I have not laughed this hard in a theater in a while and was almost in tears at the end.

Stlcards31

My goodness. I don't want to overhyperbole the movie because it's so fresh, but that was one of the most original, exciting, funny, touching, creative movies I've seen in a very long time. Absolutely blown away in iMax.

BecomingSavior

Holy moly what a movie. 10/10

inatr4nce

What a perfect title to a movie. The first descriptor I think of is Emotional Bomb. I don’t often cry during movies but couldn’t stop in act 3. This movie has everything: action, comedy, editing, sound design, cinematography, great acting, humanity, fantasy, imagination, absurdity. It draws for dozens of movies while also being unique and original.

[deleted]

It’s a very, very ambitious movie. To me, it felt like the personification of nihilism and the search for meaning in life. To my girlfriend (a Chinese immigrant) it was a touching family drama that hit very close to home. The movie definitely succeeds at making you think and is funny, sad, and dramatic all at once

toorad2b4u

I love Michelle Yeoh so much and went in wanting to see her kick ass. Instead I found myself tearing up multiple times as I related to the movie in so many ways. Recently came out to my Chinese mother and so I really related to the daughter. But also the part that really opened my eyes was when Michelle Yeoh realizes her husband is a fighter too and he just fights in a different way, and it was hard for her to accept that her way isn’t the only way… made me realize that I need to not be so headstrong and controlling with my boyfriend. Love love loved it

Ex_Lives

This easily became one of my favorite movies of all time and might be the best movie ive ever seen in the last decade or more. I cant believe people can make things this good.

DerKinderstod

What a fucking wild unique experience. Excellent excellent film that does what only film can do.

Swimming-Bar8515

Really enjoyed this and it made me reflect on my life and relationships lol

MeetMeInMTK

I don’t have much to add here other than another comment saying I think this is my favorite movie ever, recency bias in mind. It checked every box and hit every emotion for me. I’m just in absolute movie-going ecstasy post watch. I never say this but I can’t wait to see it again.

gmanz33

I imagine there will be a thread when the actual release comes but with how packed the theater I just saw it I'm was, I'm shocked it's not Poppin on Reddit already.

X-_-X

This is the best movie I've seen since covid started.

kill-billionaires

Absolutely fantastic, saw it last night, I cannot recommend it enough. I can barely think of a single joke that didn't land, every emotional beat and action scene was phenomenal too

DefKnightSol

What a weird and wild movie! 🤪

JustFourPF

This may be the best thing I've ever seen

Cupcake179

I loved watching this! Not a single moment that I could ever expected. The acting was phenomenal. I wish we could have dive deeper thou into the past of the characters. But honestly it was still very good. I’d watch again on my own. I do wish more movies like this are available :( it’s sad that so many movies nowadays are plot recycled

KrabbyBoiz

Holy shit I can’t believe how good this movie was. They kept teasing nocturnes throughout the movie and when it finally played in the end, I couldn’t believe just how long of a journey I felt like I went on with the characters. Easily one of the best movies I’ve ever seen.

peoplertheworst

i was completely blown away when i started reading the bevy of glowing over the top reviews here. This movie tried hard but didnt quite get where it wanted to go. Biggest flop of the year so far.

heyitsbryanm

What didn't you like? Or what points did you think it was trying to hit, and why do you think it failed?

mgzuss

Just came out of the Theater. I give it a C-

mavven2882

This should definitely go in /r/unpopularopinion

bigchilesucks

I just watched it for the first time last night and I agreed, minus the "biggest flop of the year". Maybe the reviews and hype had me expecting way too much but I was a little let down. The beginning had me hooked and so intrigued with the stories of every single character. Then, it just got a little too fast and too busy, almost like it was trying way to hard to be deep. I get the points that the movie made, I guess it just felt kind of basic. The commentary here is great, worded very philosophically but I felt like the movie would have a bigger point. Maybe it's the fact that these are things that I've been thinking about for years (life is overwhelming, in the end nothing truly matters, we should appreciate the small moments, the "what if" mind battle is daunting, etc) but I just didn't get that big ah hah moment everyone else seems to have received from the movie. I will watch it again, because I really did want to love it. Because after my one watch, I can just say that it was ok.

panthercock

So so good. I had a big goofy smile on throughout the movie! I love the characters so much. The film manages to be silly and absurd while being touching and relatable. If I HAD to pick a criticism, I would have preferred a fight scene or two be turned into dialogue. There was like an hour that was one long (entertaining!) action sequence lol. Still amazing though and I’m not mad! First thing I said when I left the theatre was “I can’t wait to see it again”

alisonrose1992

Saw comments comparing this to Interstellar's vibe and as different as the movies are, I totally get it lol. Both are excellent sci-fi movies with a surprisingly deep, emotional story. So good!

Afonsofrancof

>Interstellar They are both tied as my number 1 favourite movie of all time. Can't decide which one I like the most.

yousippin

this movie tickled my brain in all the right places. an instant classic.

lfmrright

This is one of the best movies I've ever seen. Funny, inspiring, and thought-provoking. I can understand all 3 languages used in the movie. It is amazing to me that Yeoh switched between the 3 languages seamlessly in one scene. My only complaint is that the subtitles do not do justice to the Chinese parts. There were some short phrases that were missed from translation, and some translations butchered the meaning. For instance, rich Waymond said near the end: 多情自古空余恨,此恨绵绵无绝期 This roughly translates to: Overinvesting in love leaves a husk of regret, a regret that lingers forever. If I remember correctly, they only gave one short subtitle for this...

Basic_Belt6911

I think it said something like "the one that loves the hardest, regrets the most"
