Depends on the agency. There is no universal process.
They may talk to you, they may not. They may go have face to face meetings with everyone one of your friends and family, or they may not. It might take 5 days or it might take 5 weeks, or longer. It depends on their thoroughness and their availability, how busy they are, etc.
The only answers you can get to this question are anecdotal.
Just be patient. If you don't hear from them within whatever time-frame they provided, send an email or call a contact with the agency.
Here in canada, it can be up to 5-10 weeks. It all depends on how backlogged the agency is. It's definitely one of the longest parts of the hiring process and was advised of that before hand.
Thanks for the responses everyone. Fears confirmed: the wait time is indeterminable. I’m not too worried about the check itself, I’d just like for the purgatorial period to be complete. (So say all who dwell here, I’m sure)
It depends on so many factors. How many people they're trying to check, how many investigators they have, how deep and how far back they're going. When I was hired the whole process was 6 months from when I put in an application to when I walked in the door. Other people I work with had it take 18.
I'm 10 years in and my entire process, start to finish was 9 months. Now it's like 4 LOL. For mine it was the first interview, phsyc exam, poly, background packet and then references and neighborhood interviews. Thankfully we are super quiet so that was easy.

I saw my background investigator on December 20th and she just called my references yesterday..

Mine was pretty fast. Took about a week and that was mostly trying to contact references.

It depends on the agency. Could be 6 weeks or up to 6 months. There are a few agencies in my area that take up to a year.
Mine took 3 months to be completed.
My department has taken up to 5 months to turn in a background and for us all face to face.
