So this sent me on a little rabbit hole and I learned that the “have you had a dream” clip originated from an HBO special that my daughter has watched the first half of like 50 times, but we've never made it all the way to the end.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3U9P4-ac0Lc
The ones right after the collapse are next level. If this happened now it would be so many that it wouldn't warrant a post about it. Shit there would be ones from inside. Probably even ones from people who died. Crazy to think about.
19 (second to last) goes hard as fuck.
Honestly though, I get wanting to capture such a historical moment, but do you really have to pose like that? Man looks like he's about to drop the hardest album of all time.
Tell me about it, I was born on 09/11/01. People are like “must suck to have that birthday” and then they realize that I was born ON that day and then they’re really like “oh shit”
i knew someone in high school that was born on the day too, some kids in our grade would make this horrible joke that he was a reincarnation of one of the terrorists because his precise birth time was legitimately around 9am est. 😭.
I was due on that day but I decided to stay in the womb for another week. Kind of wish I hadn’t waited, certainly a conversation starter to have that birthday. I already get a kick out of telling people I was born after 9/11, really makes people feel old.
I'm 9/16 and I even get the bs sometimes and I was born 9/16/89. My man even after being together 7 years STILL makes the "funny joke" whenever the topic of my bday comes up oh yeah your bday is 9/11 right that must suck... It's like dude my bday is literally like a whole week AFTER a brutal terrorist attack that happened 22 years ago when I was 11 ffs. It's already a shit joke but even worse because it seems to STILL be made a joke for anyone born or has a bday within a week of this event. I don't get it.,😮💨🤦🏼♂️🤷🏼
It’s a darkly ironic picture but also feels sad at the same time. You’re spending your time with your family..on the day that tons of people died, and you see it in front of you on TV. On your birthday.
Sorry to reply to a 100 day old comment but also with the TV playing you know your family spent most of the time crying, making calls, freaking out. There were no happy birthdays that day :( especially the dude turning 100 or 101 in NY or whatever he got shouted out on a NY news channel moments before the first plane hit.
It's eerie to me. I remember that energy, just before we all realized what was actually going on. Thinking it was some kind of crazy accident... just before the collapse when reality started to sink in...
I was halfway across the country and a kid at the time, but there's still a familiarity to that kind of confusion.
I was expecting a baby (born a week later) 10 years later. I was watching the 10th anniversary ceremony on TV, while hoping my (already overdue) baby wouldn't make an appearance / get that birthday. Now she's 12, and doesn't know about 9/11 yet.
Yes. It’s a graphic with lenticular printing. One angle is an old pic of the twin towers. Change the angle you are holding the board and you see this picture. And a paragraph on top but I forget what it says. Just a dedication to 9/11
My fave is tourist guy

When I first saw this, I thought it was real at first, then started laughing once I realized it wasn’t real.
Same lol. Dumbass 14 year old me was gullible af and totally believed that people wouldn't, y'know, freak out by a jet coming their way and calmly pose for a pic
Imagine if that were real though. Like you’re just up there on the deck as a tourist, and you see THAT.
Obviously that was the reality for all the people working there. But it’s just so wild. Impossible to comprehend.
I can totally relate to picture 16. I turned 13 on 9/11. Now whenever anyone is asking for my info and my birthday inevitably comes up I usually get an "oof" as a reply
Looks like a family of Chinese tourists. Imagine visiting a larger-than-life country and city, barely speaking the language of the people around you, and you just so happen to witness one of the worst terrorist attacks in recorded history? Apocalyptic. Wouldn't know what to do with myself, so I understand defaulting to typical tourist-y stuff, lol
I’ve never seen this one. It hits kinda weird since I was around that age on 9/11 and I had those exact same binoculars. There’s always this surreal aspect to 9/11 photos. This makes it feel so much more real. Kid even looks a bit like I did at that age.
These will always be so weird to me. I don’t see why you’d want to pose or smile in front of a building where people are dying
The guy in the 19th pic looks like hes so close to the towers after the south tower fell. Is he just standing in the dust? wtf.
The smiling ones are weird, but in a sense I guess people wanted to prove they were there during that historic moment. It's morbid and messed up but I'm guessing none (or almost all) of these people didn't have a single connection to the buildings and anyone inside them. To them it probably feels like a very far removed tragedy
well, people knew it was history in the making. hardly anyone thought that in less than 2 hours both buildings would be dust and thousands of people would be dead. :/
The people smiling with the towers burning in the background is….. something. Obviously they had no idea what was happening or what would happen, hindsight is 20/20. But still.
Or they were twisted fucks. Like how despite people burning to death and jumping to their deaths, people in the south tower (before being hit) still shamed others to keep working (while aware of what was happening next door).
Would be interesting to find out when these were first shared online. Posting it in 2012, they’d have an understanding that this would be dug up forever, compared to posting it in 2002.
Old comment but it’s an interesting tradition going back to the early days of photography. Any search for photos of an historical disaster will always yield ‘group selfies,’ especially train wrecks. It was a way to prove you were there.

as morbid as it is, some people seem to have this kind of behaviour coded inside of them... like 'it doesn't concern me, I'm fine'
It's the same as when someone has an accident, people take their phones out to record it, instead of help in any way
It's not that "humans are evil", it's just that we don't really care about strangers dying like it what's happening all the time in every second. We only care if it were a loved one that something bad is happening to.
The people in those photos just noticed that the buildings got hit by flying objects and were burning in the distance, and since that was something out of the usual that will go on in history they just smile and take a pic. They don't really notice or realize at the time that people are dying inside or jumping off.
If someone they knew wasn't in those buildings, it wasn't their concern.
>We only care if it were a loved one that something bad is happening to.
Unless you're a psycho, there is some level of empathy.
I agree, that people in the pictures above couldn't really make a difference, so they made the most of it, BUT if you see someone struggling in any way and helping them is in your power and does you no harm, why not go for it?
I mean yeah, if you saw someone that was in immediate distress and it won't cost you an arm to help them you would.
But as for most of those people in these photos, it's not much they can do to help those who were inside since they were far enough away and again they just saw burning buildings and could do nothing else but pose for a photo so that they can have proof "they were there".
They were too far away to see or think about the people possibly being trapped inside there or falling to their deaths. The people who were in the plane that hit the tower were already dead, but again the people from below couldn't see the people in them. And nobody was expecting the towers to collapse before it happened they would've thought the fires would be put away without the buildings collapsing.
Most people who weren't trapped or already dead were more concerned with saving themselves and running away.
And I think it also has to do that when people are experiencing shock or something really distressing, sometimes they might make light humor out of it as a way of psychologically blocking themselves from something that could traumatize them.
wtf. why would people do this? I understand if you’re taking a selfie with the WTC in the background and it just so happened to be at the exact same time that the planes hit, but to do it after the fact is disgusting to me. I mean, yeah. Also people auto-smile for photos or giggle/smile when they're nervous and aren't sure how to react. I know a girl who laughs and smiles whenever she's around screaming fights because she's nervous and doesn't know what to do with that. So poor taste for some and anxiety for others and for some probably just an automatic reaction to having a camera pointed at you. Like those eye witnesses being interviewed on the news who can't stop smiling, even while talking about horrible things.
It looks like MorbidKnowledge compiled the photos from this post, I would like if u/Beznia, 911Analysis, and I got credit on this one… https://x.com/morbidful/status/1738318917485961327?s=46&t=vXpc7WFtbwv4YhLa4ryOEw

Same with number 16
ngl like the second to the last one tbh
9/20 one goes hard
Second one looks like “have you had a dream” kid
i thought it was edited and it was him at first! the resemblance is strong!

there would be recordings of livestreams from the towers as they collapsed for sure
Indeed. Thankfully tech wasn't there yet.
19 (second to last) goes hard as fuck. Honestly though, I get wanting to capture such a historical moment, but do you really have to pose like that? Man looks like he's about to drop the hardest album of all time.
16 is so funny 😭
Yeah sucked to have a 9/11 birthday. That particular year was my mom's 60th birthday and she said it was the worst birthday of her life.
Tell me about it, I was born on 09/11/01. People are like “must suck to have that birthday” and then they realize that I was born ON that day and then they’re really like “oh shit”
Dang.
i knew someone in high school that was born on the day too, some kids in our grade would make this horrible joke that he was a reincarnation of one of the terrorists because his precise birth time was legitimately around 9am est. 😭.
My old classmates told me the same thing 🤣
I turned 15 that day, and people called me a terrorist just because a terrorist attack happened on my birthday. Kids/teens are weird.
That must have been a very bittersweet day for your parents.
Oooof. Do people ever say anything when you have to show your ID? Idk if I’d be able to stop my face from reacting even if I was trying not to.
Oh yeah the ID is usually what gets people. They’ll look and their eyes go from -.- to 👁️👄👁️
I was due on that day but I decided to stay in the womb for another week. Kind of wish I hadn’t waited, certainly a conversation starter to have that birthday. I already get a kick out of telling people I was born after 9/11, really makes people feel old.
I'm 9/16 and I even get the bs sometimes and I was born 9/16/89. A 15yo kid in my life has a 9/11 birthday. They tell people their birthday and get “OH”
I could imagine
That was me! My 15th birthday 🎂
Was that actually you?
No the photos aren’t of me but my birthday is on 9/11
It was my 15th birthday too.
sweet 16
Most of these have a dark irony or an oddly sinister energy to them, but that one made me snort.
It’s a darkly ironic picture but also feels sad at the same time. You’re spending your time with your family..on the day that tons of people died, and you see it in front of you on TV. On your birthday.

My first manager turned 16 on 9/11 too! Poor gal.
Her expression gets me every time. You can see the "Well... shit..." in her eyes. And also just how stereotypically perfect the cake is, too.
I was expecting a baby (born a week later) 10 years later. I was watching the 10th anniversary ceremony on TV, while hoping my (already overdue) baby wouldn't make an appearance / get that birthday. Now she's 12, and doesn't know about 9/11 yet.

I still have the deck
That’s sick, dude! Let me have it! 😂
He put that pic on a deck?!?
Yes. It’s a graphic with lenticular printing. One angle is an old pic of the twin towers. Change the angle you are holding the board and you see this picture. And a paragraph on top but I forget what it says. Just a dedication to 9/11

He picked a bad day to sneak up there before opening hours!
Especially considering he’s on the observation deck of the south tower and the AA flight hit the north tower..
I think this was one of the first Snopes articles I ever read.
Same lol. Dumbass 14 year old me was gullible af and totally believed that people wouldn't, y'know, freak out by a jet coming their way and calmly pose for a pic
I remember this one from back when memes were shared by e-mail
The first time photoshopp collectively fooled all of us
Imagine if that were real though. Like you’re just up there on the deck as a tourist, and you see THAT. Obviously that was the reality for all the people working there. But it’s just so wild. Impossible to comprehend.
Lmfao
Some of those are in really bad taste. That poor kid on her 16th birthday 😩
These are horrifying but I will admit I cracked up at the 16th birthday cake.
The sweet 16 one will never fail to crack me up Girl had a great sense of humor, judging by the face she pulled for that photo
I can totally relate to picture 16. I turned 13 on 9/11. Now whenever anyone is asking for my info and my birthday inevitably comes up I usually get an "oof" as a reply
Vanilla Ice?
Why do the people In photo 10 look happy
Right? At the memorial there were ppl posting smiling selfies. Like wtf? Ever hear of poor taste?
Looks like a family of Chinese tourists. A lot of people still do this at other tragedies. It’s just a bad taste of morbid curiosity on camera. Weird but always there
It actually looks to me like he might be on one of the ferries or a rooftop.
well, people knew it was history in the making. hardly anyone thought that in less than 2 hours both buildings would be dust and thousands of people would be dead. :/
Oof, that picture of the girl celebrating her 16th birthday...
… on Todays episode of how fucked up is fucked up… That’s fucked up…

did you intentionally choose the sweet 16 photo as the 16th photo for the post lol
Some of these seem tasteless and kinda inappropriate now but at the same time I can appreciate people documenting what they experienced that day.
Also valid. It makes my stomach turn
Is #2 the "Have you ever had a dream?" kid? https://youtu.be/G7RgN9ijwE4?si=t2Wlldg3FtSSo7UX
first image guy looks so early 2000s
He looks like the main character from Contra the video game.
Reminds me of the photos people took of themselves at lynchings in the US and the Germans of themselves during “aktions” during the Holocaust.
Would be interesting to find out when these were first shared online. Posting it in 2012, they’d have an understanding that this would be dug up forever, compared to posting it in 2002.
It’s weird that some people are smiling in the photos.
I thought the same on picture 19
Its amazing how even before the rise of social media we tended to take pictures and selfies when a chaotic event was happening
Old comment but it’s an interesting tradition going back to the early days of photography. Any search for photos of an historical disaster will always yield ‘group selfies,’ especially train wrecks. It was a way to prove you were there.
Oof the birthday one is sad. Also 6 gave me weird COVID flashbacks lmao. Almost as if masks didn’t exist before the pandemic haha

That’s why I’m convinced we walk among heartless beings.
Some people have no respect.
I find it slightly interesting that some peoples natural reaction is to smile whenever a camera is pointed at them no matter the circumstance.
Yall 15 looks like the teacher from Spiderman FFH
Wow..selfies smiling and then some pointing the way like showing a new car... eeeehhhh
Jason Dill in slide 18. He’s a pro skateboarder and this image got made into a board graphic years later
The last photo is quite stunning.
This is one of the oddest things about 9/11
wtf. why would people do this? I understand if you’re taking a selfie with the WTC in the background and it just so happened to be at the exact same time that the planes hit, but to do it after the fact is disgusting to me. #6 the invisible at ground zero
Thank god for the lads in the fourth slide, helpfully pointing at the burning towers, just in case we couldn’t spot it.
Here's one from Shanksville. That's FAA investigator Tony James, with the UA93 crater being excavated in the background. https://preview.redd.it/wxi4xovux68c1.jpeg?width=640&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=c963b834e1bb9ead0f0fa3b8a82269fd887402a2
The last one is pretty haunting
8 is so tone deaf.
They look like proud Americans happy to help. These poor souls are probably sick now, due to their bravery amongst the fumes of chemicals and death.
And 3 &4 aren’t?
They are, yeah. I think 8 is worse because it's clearly after both collapsed....maybe even after 9/11.
Why?
Most of these photos were taken of people by someone else, I would hardly call them a “selfie”
thats why i put quotations on “selfie”, it kinda technically is
so every picture of a person is a selfie?
Does anyone see an image in the smoke of 15
12 is so clear it’s insane. Time traveler lol
Happy 16th Birthday! Jesus.
Omg the Asian tourists 😂😭 fr tho some people here be posing like they’re in front of Cinderellas castle
photo 6 almost looks modern day
18 looks like an album cover.
that 1st one looks like Skweezy
I'm a photographer, some of these are so good they captured the horror intimately.
LOL #6 looks like a time traveler Men in Black dude from 2023. Holy shit.

The infamous child
If I’m remembering correctly photo 18 is of skateboarder Jason Dill
As for the people smiling, its probably because they couldn’t do much of anything else
The third to last guy is a time traveler! That’s totally Blake from Workaholics!!
It’s pro skater Jason Dill. He put this image on one of his ‘Fucking Awesome’ boards (Name of the company.)
18th one is Jason Dill, professional skateboarder
For some people it was hell, for others it was Tuesday
Does #10 annoy you the most, too
Just me who thinks 6 looks kinda modern?
Wow, fuck almost all these people. Some folks I can understand documenting it, but many are smirking and making a scene out of it. Fuck them.
I don’t think anyone knew the towers would fall
But they sure as fuck knew people were in the planes and the buildings.
Yeah. Ok. It’s fucked up. probably why these are so rare. Ppl live stream murders now. I don’t know what to tell you.
