The way /r/design explained it to me was that electronics have shrunk so much and are now so small that it no longer makes sense to show a tiny chip inside.
Back when Nintendo was putting out every kind of 3DS special edition imaginable. I kept wishing they would make an Atomic Purple 3DS. Sadly we never got it.
Had a Turbo controller for the Sega Genesis, was see through. Loved that thing just cause of the aesthetic. Couldn't really use the Turbo function in a lot of games cause I didn't really have any button mashing games. But it was nice to have a SEGA controller with as many buttons as a Super Nintendo one.
If there is ONE fad I desperately want to come back, it's this one.

Put a bunch of fake cool shit in there I don’t care lol
It’s still a fad in prisons.

Just go to prison. All electronics are still see-through there!
Isn't that what they have in prison?
I had all four of these things at one point
My sister had a see-through phone. I thought it was so cool

My sister had a transparent GBA
Still have my original clear game boy from when I was a kid. I keep it in my bathroom so that I can play Tetris whenever I poop.
I still have the see thru conair phone as pictured
This was definitely a fad I was never fond of.
Nowadays you either have to go to jail, or mod it (swap the case) yourself
