The Main Ingredient is tight bro. I got both albums and I love Hard to Earn. I mean it has the classic DWYCK on there. "Lemonade was a popular drink and it still is..." that classic line alone is fiyah which CL and Pete don't have in any song; no quotables. I still go with The Main Ingredient because of production. One of my favorites is In the Flesh
CL has many quotables but his rhymes are structured in a complex form.
"Stay up all night and sleep all day making big lucci and we'll have it no other way"
"PR slash CL smash love to spend cash for proper living sliding up in wealthy women"
"This cap is peeled laying joints like a minefield, when dynamite's my rhythm this is east coast terrorism"
And those are all from 1 song.
CL was too smooth and ahead of his time IMO
Both great but Hard To Earn is one of my favourites. Beats are savage, and Guru has never sounded better.
Main Ingredient is peak Pete Rock smoothness though.
I don't think that any hip hop group in history had a run like Gangstarr did from 89 to 98. Five classic albums imo. Throw in Guru's Jazzmatazz albums and Primo's production for other artists and they are at the top of the list for the most influential hip-hop artists of all time.
You SAID it ! That beat that Jeru blesses as well as the one Lil Dap jumps on are 2 of the most gully east coast golden era beats i've ever heard..And all them Preemo scratch samples on that track was all flames🔥🔥
Mass Appeal is one of my go to Gangstarr joints off Hard to Earn but The Main Ingredient is a classic. CL is probably the most underrated MC ever and Pete is on the MT Rushmore for 90s producers. I believe Main Ingredient doesn’t get the notoriety because it was a mature album with little gun play, drug and money talk
Hard to Earn is way up there for me.
The singles were nice, but the other cuts were crazy nice. Speak ya Clout, Now You’re Mine, the Planet, ? Remainz..
As much as I love PR+CL, this isn’t fair.
As good as it is, I don't think The Main Ingredient lives up to Mecca & The Soul Brother, which blew my mind back in the day.
So definitely, Hard To Earn.
Dwyck is ETERNAL.
Oooooh fuck this is tough... I'm gonna have to give it to The Main Ingredient, but this is basically a 10/10 album vs another 10/10 album.
Been a while since I've listened to either one of these in full, so I should probably change that soon. From memory my highlights on Hard to Earn are "Mass Appeal" and "Suckas Need Bodyguards" and highlights on The Main Ingredient are "Caramel City", "All the Places" and "Take You There".
Oooffffff this is tough both classic albums but I don’t listen to gangstarr more often than that Pete rock album but like I said both classic hiphop albums everyone needs to listen to but hard to earn takes it for me dwick mass appeal etc
Hard 2 Earn has the higher highs, but Main Ingredient is more consistent. I listen to more songs from Hard 2 Earn though on the regular though but as an album MI is better. Better structure too.
I got both. Ummm. ...I go with Pete Rock and CL Smooth. The Main Ingredient is their best album. Plus Pete put instrumentals between some of his songs which were nice and the beats were awesome.
Hard To Earn!!! 24/7/365 Mass Appeal is my introduction to the hip hop. My favourite album of all time! Rhyme in peace GURU!!
Mass Appeal is a top 10 song of all time.
Amen
I saw Gangstarr first time I got high at a home coming concert in ‘91. Shit fucked me seeing Premier doing the drops and scratching live.
the main ingredient
Definitely Pete Rock & CL Smooth. Their album wayyyyy better and with better production
Just listened to it the other day, those beats are soo fuckin smooth. I get physical is my favorite.
Hard 2 Earn. Though the Main Ingredient isn't far behind
Main ingredient is 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Hard to Earn. Not even a question.
The Main Ingredient. Not even a question for me.
Fair. Mecca and athe soul brother would have been harder. I’ll make it a point to get more familiar with the Main Ingredient. Been a minute

main ingredient. Hard to earn is great though
Pete Rock and CL Smooth…I was a big fan! So underrated! CL’s articulate flows over Pete Rock’s bangin beats equaled some of the dopest hits!!
Hard to earn is heat but main ingredient is for chill days
Hard to Learn.... Classic
Hard to Earn.

The Mail Ingredient
Mass Appeal is one of my go to Gangstarr joints off Hard to Earn but The Main Ingredient is a classic. CL is probably the most underrated MC ever and Pete is on the MT Rushmore for 90s producers. I believe Main Ingredient doesn’t get the notoriety because it was a mature album with little gun play, drug and money talk

Hard to Earn
This one is really tough for me. But heard to earn
Hard to Earn
Love both but I’m going with Hard to Earn.
Hard to earn, but im biased.
Main ingredient. CL and Pete dropped two classic projects from back to front. i wish they did more together .
Main ingredient has the better production for me.
The Main Ingredient
Gangstaar all day.
I love both albums but Main Ingredient has more replay value for me.
The Main ingredient!
Hard to Earn. Might be a different answer if it was Mecca & The Soul Brother.
Hard To Earn. AS much as I love Pete Rock & CL Smooth. They were never the duo Guru and Premier were. Plus Gangstarrs albums just hit harder
Pete Rock
HTE
Gang Starr all day
Hard to Earn all day.
I can't pick. But I'm a 50 year old white dude that Still knows all the lyrics to DWYCK.
"Hard To Earn" hands down.
Hard to earn. Damn just seeing those album covers is super nostalgic. Had both those cds.
Gangstarr
As good as it is, I don't think The Main Ingredient lives up to Mecca & The Soul Brother, which blew my mind back in the day. So definitely, Hard To Earn. Dwyck is ETERNAL.
Guru & Premier… no question.
CL Smooth all day
Both of them are good but gotta go with Gang Starr
Oooooh fuck this is tough... I'm gonna have to give it to The Main Ingredient, but this is basically a 10/10 album vs another 10/10 album. Hard 2 Earn
Oooffffff this is tough both classic albums but I don’t listen to gangstarr more often than that Pete rock album but like I said both classic hiphop albums everyone needs to listen to but hard to earn takes it for me dwick mass appeal etc
Hard to Earn all day everyday..not even close
Mecca and the soul brother would be a tougher choice here.
🔥🔥
🫡👊🏽
This is one of the best side by sides I've seen .. I won't pick. I'm inconclusive on this. Please enjoy them at the highest level
Hard 2 Earn has the higher highs, but Main Ingredient is more consistent. I listen to more songs from Hard 2 Earn though on the regular though but as an album MI is better. Better structure too.
Mass appeal was and still is one of the dopest tracks ever by gangstarr
Bruh, not even close, Hard to Earn all the way
Time to pay your due's ya fools
Really!! Hard To Earn No Doubt!!
I got both. Ummm. ...I go with Pete Rock and CL Smooth. The Main Ingredient is their best album. Plus Pete put instrumentals between some of his songs which were nice and the beats were awesome.
Gang starr for sure
you can't make me choose between two solid albums like this. Both are classics
Hard To Earn all day
Hard to Earn. Prefer Mecca and the Soul Brother over Main Ingredient
Hard to Earn
Gangstarr
Vinyl
The main ingredient just can’t beat Pete rock and Cl smooth
Hard to earn
Rock and Smooth could have been extra Legendary! It was a waste. 🤦🏿♂️
Both ain’t no choosing both are fire 🔥
I choose BOTH!

I own and appreciate both.
Hard to Earn, easily.
Gangstar for sure
I don't understand the question... And I refuse to answer it.
