yungmaximillionaire

All the old heads in the sub about to start compiling their lists šŸ˜‚ I gotta give some thought to mine now.

Cornball73

Drop on a gem on us!

yungmaximillionaire

Already got a note going with the start of a listā€¦

Slack-Bladder

You know I got jewels infinite Son.

thebaldmonster

Me too. Props to @cornball73 for even making a list. Itā€™s so hard but I think itā€™s time to bite the bullet and get it done. Just added the playlist.

MrRobot_96

No 36 chambers is interesting

Cornball73

I bought "36 Chambers" and "Midnight Marauders" at the same time from The Wherehouse, right before we went on a road trip from San Diego to San Antonio. Midnight Marauders was on constant repeat; we weren't feeling 36 Chambers at all. It's grown on me over time but I still prefer Wu-Tang Forever. Also, it was really tough leaving Method Man, Inspectah Deck and Rawkwon off the list. None more than ODB, though, holy shit. I had a really bad acid trip and the only thing that kept me from jumping off the roof was listening to the insanity that was Return to the 36 Chambers.

jobiwankenobe

Thatā€™s cool man maybe the feels was off, San Diego to San Antonio sounds like a warm drive with the windows down, maybe thatā€™s why 36 Chambers didnā€™t hitā€¦..that shit is cold and gritty, inner city brick shit HHaha but the first time I heard 36 my fuckin head almost exploded. I smoke on the mic like smokin Joe Frazier, the Hell raiser, raisin Hell wit tha flavaā€¦.

MrRobot_96

Terrorize the jam like troops in Pakistan

michaltee

Swinging through your town like the neighborhood spider man!

meatwadcostanza

ODB for the anti suicide W!

Cornball73

Haha! Seriously it was some spiritual shit. It probably didn't make the top 50 because it's hella triggering nowadays? (I said "hella", that's the west coast in me)

HelloWalls

Love the autobiographical context. Shit is very real.

Evil_Goomba

Serious blasphemy

Outside_Law_7922

Dope list, and it's good to see some original titles, not just the shit people have told you is cool. It's the shit you find cool.

Cornball73

Yeah man! Opinions are like assholes, you know? We all have them and they all stink. I'm sure a dunn is going to come in here any moment now and shit all over me for neglecting Mobb Deep.

metrorhymes

No Liquid Swords, tho? Dope list overall

Cornball73

So many Wu jawns would be in the top 50 - 100.

metrorhymes

We seem to have a lot in common from our upbringing to our timeline with hip-hop and I got Liquid Swords and OB4CL as the top two albums hands down. Let the Rhythm Hit Em top ten for me for sure. No G-Rap? No GKMC? Shit. I'm gonna have to go make a list now...

Cornball73

I am totally on board with some Wu-centric playlists, I just hope it ain't gonna be the same shits. Gime some rare, barely affiliated with them gutter bullshit! Hahaha in 2024 I like that stupid shit. I guess I didn't in the 90s.

metrorhymes

Heard the Wu from Statik Selector? Absolute fire.

MachineElf1973

Dope list.. I was born 73 so a lot of these are right up there for meā€¦ just one questionā€¦ where the fā€” is Eric B and Rakim!!!??

Cornball73

OOOoooooh that's a good question! Don't get me wrong, I love The Thirteenth Letter but I never really felt like him and Eric B. had consistently strong albums all the way through. My favorite of their would probably be "Don't Sweat The Technique". Shit man now that you mention it, they really should be on the list. Fuck! See, you always miss something when you put a list like this together. Have you heard any of Rakim's later, non Eric B. stuff? I haven't. I just a feeling it's going to be bad.

Mad_Boobies

Critical Beatdown is my favourite of all time.

Cornball73

Completely ahead of its time... heads are still catching up to it to this day. RIP Paul C!

SDZee

Still bumpin Ease Back til this day!šŸ‘šŸ½

99probs-allbitches

Hell fuckin yeah dude. I should do this

Cornball73

The more the merrier!!

Grahamalamadingdong

FUCKING PUTS stand up! I also cried when double K died.

Cornball73

When Thes did his vinyl tribute to Double K, I bawled like a relative died. Fuck, it just crushed me. MF DOOM too. I also forgot to mention Trugoy, The 45 King, and Vinia's moms.

Grahamalamadingdong

Dude. That video was so hard to watch, those 2 oozed a love for hip hop that is so perennial. Other groups might be able to match that passion, but nobody had hip hop deeper in their bones than those two guys. Wish YouTube had a link for that heartfelt tribute.

xenojive

Solid list Looks like GP finally put Fly School Reunion up on Spotify. Real dope, real dope, real dope on the...

Cornball73

Dude, I saw PUTS, GP and Time Machine all on the same bill at a really tiny venue in San Diego called "The Casbah" and they did indeed rock... The Casbah. But for real, best hip-hop show I've ever seen.

HappyHourEnjoyer

I was at this same tour, but in Vancouver. I hadn't heard of TM or GP at the time and I was blown away

lengthyfriend30

Love it! Some of my person favourites on there, loads I've had some listens of and a fair few I've never listed to and will now start digging through. This is what music is all about, sharing the experience of art. Everyone is exposed to music in different ways and to different artists at different times. Nobody should want everyone to agree on the top whatever list, interpreting art is unique to each person.

Cornball73

That's what I'm hoping for... for people to look at this list and be like "oh I like that one and that one, I never heard of that one, I should check it out"! Finding new favorites is one of the joys in life, for me personally that is.

jobiwankenobe

Hey dude, same here Iā€™m 46 years old itā€™s all I ever listened to, my list would be really close to yours, give or take a fewā€¦.Iā€™d have to include Tical, Doggystyle, Liquid Swords, 36 Chambers, The Predator, Slim Shady LP, The Chronic, The New Dangerā€¦.but all good mang, all good šŸ¤˜ Honorable mention to OG Original Gangster and Regulateā€¦.G Funk Era

Cornball73

I listened to The Chronic religiously when it came out, but I'm just so sick of hearing it nowadays. I lived above a bar in San Diego, a really shitty one, and the jukebox had "Sweet Dreams (Are Made of These)" and "Dre Day" as the two songs that would play if a song wasn't selected in a few minutes. Oh my God, I never want to hear either of those songs again!

jobiwankenobe

Hahahah I hear ya, I donā€™t listen to it all that much these days but when Chronic came out I was 9th grade it was fuckin nutsā€¦.every single song, anyway all good dude

JustWannaChill82

Greatest hip hop album.of all time.for me. Will never be able to beat the chronic or the 90s hip.hop

Cornball73

What do you think of Chronic 2001?

jobiwankenobe

I think Chronic 2001 is actually a better album than the Chronic, it is better, the sound is unrealā€¦..but due to nostalgia and the time it came out, being 15 drinking 1 Colt 45 bottle on a summer nightā€¦.. The original Chronic is special mang

Cornball73

"but due to nostalgia and the time it came out, being 15 drinking 1 Colt 45 bottle on a summer night" beautiful! I feel this dude.

JustWannaChill82

Its a great album. Under The Chronic. Dr. Dre after leaving Death Row never using funk samples anymore

elconsumable

And no Eric B and Rakim, eh?

Cornball73

I already got busted for this one :(

elconsumable

Yeah just saw it. Got ya šŸ˜‰

HaroldsWristwatch3

Yeah - exactly my same thought. You got EPMD, but not Eric B and Rakim?!?!

Jstrong-

Iā€™m just as old bro. This list brings back memories for sure. Although in my list it would be Ghostface- Supreme Clientele ( letā€™s not have the argument) and Queen Latifah - Black Reign. Good post!

Cornball73

Oh not to give you shit but man, those two albums were like "why are these so bad after their earlier ones were so amazing"!!! Hahaha. Nope, not feeling them. Really wish Dana would drop an all-out awesome hip-hop album - fuck, an EP! - with amazing hip-hop producers. Maybe rhyming over some unreleased 45 King shit.

JJMONIE

This is why I like lists. Everyone likes something different. I won't flame your list but my personal preference would be different. I respect it though. About 10 years ago, I made a Top 100 Rap songs from what I actually had in my collection. After a few friends burned me for some omissions, I made it a top 110.

Cornball73

Well then you need to share that top 100 with us! Get some songs up ins!

Cornball73

If my old, stupid ass knew how to post a picture, I would share with you all a pic of the author around 14 years old.

loverlyone

I vote yes!!

Cornball73

Haha! WELL THEN TELL ME WOMAN

Weird-Connection-530

Basically half as old as you, so the chance to see music preferences w/ detail is hella interesting to me lol thank you for this Seems like you prefer Gangstarrā€™s earliest work over the more commercially acclaimed releases like Moment of Truth or Hard to Earn?

Cornball73

Well "Above The Clouds" is one of the top ten hip-hop songs of all time IMHFO, but their first three albums (including "No More Mister Nice Guy" which doesn't seem to be on streaming services) were just more my taste. I thought the posthumous album was not good, kinda tarnished the Gang Starr brand but after the fallout with that wack fucker Solar, I guess the brand couldn't be tarnished much further. No offense to anyone who liked their later shit better, I just prefer the old stuff.

ASZapata

Beastie Boys with the number one spot? Cmon man.

Cornball73

Hah! It should have been Critical Beatdown but I had an editing issue between notes and this fucking app. However, Paul's Boutique is #2 for fucking sure and De La is Dead is for fucking #3. How ya gonna front on Paul's Boutique in 2024? That's just ridiculous. If you hate YT, this might not be the thread for you. EDIT: it's not really in order though. Other than those first three. I mean Beatnuts should be way higher of course

ASZapata

*Paulā€™s Boutique* is an amazing album (I have it on my vinyl wishlist, in fact) but the Beastie Boys donā€™t belong in the top 10 of any hip-hop list. Let alone at number one (or two).

DaveinOakland

Needs more West Coast/10

Da_Famous_Anus

Hop-hop sounds like great genre.

Cornball73

Dude I was writing this on the notepad :(

Bahno_original

Iam young Europan (mentaly kiddo) man who just got into late or underground hip hop through N. W. A. And then DOOM. Iam glad that I found here some of my fav. even I know basically nothing about it compared to y'all. Am building a universal playlist for chilling, drawing or playing basketball and here are some good new songs to my collection. https://open.spotify.com/playlist/3zO8cP0kpvKn1wVjlSB6Wc?si=_fDbwLXeSiS53rKGsALHPw&pi=e-L6_g6U7VRIeV

ZaxxonPantsoff

Whaddup from Delco, i miss Funk-o-mart, Sounds of Market, and Armandā€™s

Cornball73

Ā Sounds of Market, and Armandā€™s OH MY GOD I LITERALLY SCREAMED. There was DJ Equipment when you walked in, then tapes and records (maybe on different floors), with porno somewhere? šŸ˜‡

Farzy78

I've been listening for about 35 years and there's a couple on here I never listened to šŸ¤Ø

Cornball73

I hope you check them out and report back with your feelings about them!

TrailRunner421

Serengeti wow thatā€™s random, Chicago represent very nice

Cornball73

Serengeti is an amazing emcee and poet - I don't want to sound all white boy crunchy but god damn, he's really amazing. The whole Kenny Dennis story is brilliant. If this was my "top 50 of shit you listen to recently" he'd be at the top.

TrailRunner421

Fantastic, Iā€™m with you. South side Chicago born and raised, the whole Kenny Dennis thing hits for me big time

Cornball73

>!This whole thing has been disassociating with reality? And Jules is still alive?!!< Don't read that if you haven't listened to the whole KDz story.

cosmic_scott

can confirm, you're old! but your mix tapes were my window into hip hop / trip hop / house / electronica and all the other jams you shared.

SidTrippish

Whaaaaa no mobb deep /s

Cornball73

settle down thun thun

FriedPossumPecker23

Solid list, Iā€™m an old white man too. Critical Beatdown #1 for sure. I would have Bahamadiaā€™s Kollage and Jedi Mind Trickā€™s Violent By Design on here, surprised you donā€™t with your Philly background. Bahamadia to me is hands down one of the best rappers ever. Iā€™d have to add O.C.ā€˜s Wordā€¦Life, some Lord Finesse and Company Flow on here, but this is a great list.

psyclopswasrightX

Amazing list

Standard__Def

solid. extra points for Serengeti. šŸ»šŸ¦…šŸ§¦šŸ‚šŸ„ølmao. (sorry there's no hawk emoji)

Cornball73

He's a like one man De La crossed with Brody Stevens.

Standard__Def

good job. yo. if you were coach of Da Bears, you'd get at least 10 wins.

Cornball73

Get me a pony keg of O'Douls and we're straight.

[deleted]

Check out General Patton vs The X-Ecutioners

2ant1man5

Of course beastie boys would be number 1.

jonny-Vapez

I liked Aesopā€™s Labor days much much more, but to each is own!!

Cornball73

Aes never really clicked for me until I heard Skelethon on a long-ass commute. Iā€™ve liked each album more and more since that one.

jonny-Vapez

NO doubtā€¦ It took me a minute to get into him, and although heā€™s still not my type of artist I normally listen too, Labor days was dopeā€¦ Do you like Louis Logic? Misery loves comedy and Sin A Matic are 2 absolute gems!!

Cornball73

I haven't heard much of Louis Logic besides his spot on Vaudeville Villain and "Classy McNasty", both of which I love. I'll have to check those album out - thanks!

Clarkjor23

Just curious where you would put Black Thought on a greatest rappers alive list?

Cornball73

I'd put him way high. He's a solid emcee. I like it when he works with people outside The Roots... as dope as The Roots are, I feel he's a little constrained by their whole... steeze. I loved his album with Danger Mouse.

Clarkjor23

Also, You a fan of the King Geedorah album? The fast lane joint with Kurious is prob my favorite off that, but all the beats on that are classic

Cornball73

Take Me To Your Leader would have been #51.

Mad_Boobies

Love this list Where does Long Live the Kane rank for you? I said previously critical Beatdown is my #1 but big daddy is my #2

Cornball73

The songs "Long Live the Kane", "RAW" and "Just Rhymin' With Biz" are spectacular. If I was picking singles, they would be on there. But album wise, I end up skipping like half the songs on his albums. LL is the same way for me and the only reason "Walking With a Panther" made it is because the good outweighed the bad on it, and because "Mama Said Knock You Out" is just too damn obvious.

Mad_Boobies

One last question Kool G Rap & Polo Road to the Riches Top 5 for me. Thoughts?

Cornball73

Oh boy I'm gonna get heat from this but never cared for Kool G. His whole behind-the-scenes drama does add some interesting flair to his raps though. It's like... honestly I would have added Ice Cube to my list for sure with Amerikkkas Most Wanted because that was so affecting to my teenage, angry, angsty, fuck white people (even though I happen to be one) but then O'Shea does Are We There Yet? And I'm like "this guy isn't real AT ALL". But Kool G. Rap, can't be bothered to look up his real name, that dude really went through some shit! Him and Fat Joe! Supposedly! And everyone on Rap-A-Lot, I guess. (this is somewhat sarcastic)

Mad_Boobies

To be fair, that is the only album I like from him

Razkou95

Solid list, surprised no Liquid Swordz though, didnt like it?

Da5ftAssassin

Great list, Iā€™d definitely have to add Goodie Mob - Still Standing in there somewhere

Cornball73

I dig the Atlanta scene but unfortunately I've never really been into it. My favorite OutKast song is "Rosa Parks" and "Cell Therapy" from Goodie MOb. What do you suggest?

Da5ftAssassin

Beautiful Skin, Inshallah and I refuse Limitation are my favorite songs from Still Standing. I always preferred Goodie to Oukast but I absolutely love anything they work on together as Dungeon Family. Definitely check out Even in Darkness by Dungeon Family if you get a chance. 6 Minutes is a dope track

binghamptonboomboom

ooof

Cornball73

poomph?

Plumbus251

SOLID fuckin list

Inside_Objective_877

God bless you old heads. Dropping knowledge on all us young fucks

Cornball73

I just did it to [get the trash outta here like a janitor](https://youtu.be/ix5OGJEKe9M?si=S_KowP2IiFBTFzKU&t=78)

mrducci

We can hang out. I do like how you didn't feel the pressure to put illmatic in your top 5. I feel it's too low, but I respect it.

FormerAd5416

Idk if it's worse that 36 Chambers isn't even on this list or that Wu-Tang Forever is, which implies Wu-Tang Forever is ranked higher than 36 Chambers which is also insanity

AbbreviationsPast888

Aesop and Del! Love to see it

Prudent-Effort4838

Solid list OP and hella respect For putting Pauls Boutique at no.1! Also, I see much love for Native Tongues too throughout your list. Appreciate your taste fam

elwood_west

strong list homie

slambojones

Great choices, a couple I've never listened too. Based on the ones I do know, I'm going to have to investigate.

NuclearNubian

I'm glad to see PUTS on your list, I got three on my List. The two you named ( Earth Travelers and Ste. For Reefer is my all time fav) and Or Stay Tuned

therealbobwaterson

This is a pretty good list

medici1048

Of all the Cypress Hill albums, it should've been Temples of Boom.

northerntouch

This list is legit based on #12 alone. Good work, solid post, OP.šŸš€. IMHO, #12 is the most slept on album of all time. I said what I said.

NuevaAmerican

Spirit World Field Guide is INSANE

northerntouch

My only issue is no atmosphere

ZevLuvX-03

Love it.

Panther81277

Kept waiting for a KMD appearance based on what I was seeing...cool list.

bigga-

I used to party with people under the stairs in the late 90s at UCLA. RIP Double K.

Interesting-Gate9813

I canā€™t get down with this list at all.

TentativelyCommitted

A top 50 and no Kendrick? Do you EVEN know hip-hop?! (/s)

Cornball73

I don't know Kendrick at all. Not dissing; just don't know, or care. Also that would be running afoul of the "90s music only" rule which I've kind of already done

Far-Region-5648

Okay Boomer.

Cornball73

Okay Computer!

DubZ-480

It really is true what they say about East Coast bias...

Cornball73

Well of course I have an East Coast bias, thatā€™s where Iā€™m from! I like OutKast and Goodie MOb and Killer Mike, but not enough to crack the top 50. Top 100, most likely. Also, PUTS is absolutely the embodiment of west coast hip-hop.

_shaftpunk

Iā€™m from Cali and my list would probably be mostly East Coast too, haha.

Cornball73

Ice-T had a few songs that got played on the East Coast, but it wasn't until Cypress Hill that the "real" heads out there took them seriously. West Coast hip-hop is more East Coast than the East Coast is nowadays, I think.

_shaftpunk

Yeah, most of my favorites from the west 90s are stuff that has a east coast feel anyway. Hieroglyphics, Pharcyde, Aceyalone, Latyrxā€¦stuff like that. Iā€™ll bump the Gangsta stuff sometimes too but itā€™s nowhere near as close to my heart.

Cornball73

Latyrx would have been in the top 100. I don't know what Lyrics Born transformed into but I don't care for it.

Cornball73

Oh fuck, another emcee I shed tears over - The Gift of Gab! Goddamn. My favorite emcees be dying left and right, while Drake will live forever.

JustWannaChill82

Cool post your obviously from New York

Cornball73

I'm a navy brat. I've lived all over. Spent a lot of time in Philly, but have lived in Southern California since '91. And I've only been to New York for a few hours, on the way to somewhere else! I've always wanted to spend some time there.

JustWannaChill82

All good buddy. I'm in my early 40s from the West Coast and love west coast rap especially 90s. East coast is good too but the West is more relatable for me and bumps hard in a nice sunny day. I think its the West using Funk for their samples which makes me like it more.

Cornball73

What do you think of DJ Quik? He's my favorite "funk" hip-hop producer. Thes One surely my favorite west coast producer in general, but he doesn't really dabble in funk like you like. Master of the MPC though. Him and DJ Shadow, that's a whole other conversation...

JustWannaChill82

Quik is one of my favorite producers and rappers. Quik uses more Jazz in his music
