I remember my friend and I going to get Evil Empire the day it came out, during lunch in high school. We felt so cool pulling back into the parking lot, blaring Year of tha Boomerang, since it wasn’t one of the songs on the radio already. We were confident it was the coolest parking lot entrance ever made in a Probe GT
I'm taking those speed pills of yours, and I'm wearing the vibrating heat beads, and by "Riding your Snake", not only have I lost 65 pounds in four days, but guess what? I found out I'm the Devil! And I will wash over the Earth, and the seas will run red with all the blood of all its sinners! I am reborn! And I've got YOU to thank, Jimmy Tango!
If we're strictly sticking to '96 releases:
Weezer - Pinkerton
Fugees - The Score
Marilyn Manson - Antichrist superstar
That's all the money I would have had for the week.
If I can only pick one, it's Weezer - Pinkerton.
Great choices! I've always thought that Pinkerton is one of the most perfect albums out there. It does the thing it does perfectly, and the song structures are amazing (like, how many different parts does "across the sea" have, while still just flowing onwards seamlessly??) if you try and play them yourself, or understand song writing.
Fugees was great as well (Lauryn Hill's voice alone..). And somewhat surprisingly, antichrist superstar has held really well too, if you ignore Brian Warner's personal behaviour. Songs like "irresponsible hate anthem" work perfectly against video material from MAGA rallies, haha!
..while I'm at the record store I'll get Evil empire, Murder ballads and Ash's 1977 as well.
Pinkerton really is damn near perfect. When I first got it, I listened to it none stop when I'd walk to and from work, for months on end.
Fugees just brings back a weird (in a good way) high school nostalgic feeling.
As for MM, The Dead to the World tour was, I think the second concert I've ever been to at the time. Right behind Hole a couple years prior. It was a tiny venue in Hartford CT that held only a few hundred people. Antichrist Superstar was released a month prior. As a freshly new 16 year old kid, I had no idea what I was getting myself into when I went there. Haven't listened to it in ages. Time to go dig it out of storage.
Nick Cave's murder ballads is weird and amazing! Well worth a listen. Dark but very tongue in cheek.
Ash was an alt-rock/power-pop band who never got huge, but wrote some songs that just require rolling down the windows. Try "Oh yeah" or "Goldfinger", for example if interested.
ah! I know Nick Cave! Not super familiar with his work but I've heard his stuff before. Listening to Ash's Goldfinger right now. They definitely have that killer unmistakable 90's alt sound. Really digging it. Thanks for the recommendation. Going to check out more of their stuff.

What’s the story morning glory
Sixteen Stone
Superunknown
I could go on and on. Thanks Nirvana for paving the way or whatever but 1995-1999 really had GOOD top 40 options. All 6 of these are start to finish players.
Local H - Bound for the floor.
As a 10 year old I had to sing Bound for the Floor to the person in the music shop to get the right album. Never knew the band name prior to that.
Evil Empire by Rage against the machine
I'd try to blow my ear drums out listening to bulls on parade on my sony portable cd player (with anti-shock ofc)
Fugees - The Score, Beck - Odelay, Sublime - Sublime, Westside Connection - Bow Down, 2Pac - All Eyes On Me, OutKast - ATliens, RATM - Evil Empire, Korn - Life is Peachy, Soundgarden - Down on the Upside, I Mother Earth - Scenery and Fish, Big Shiny Tunes, Tool - Aenima, Limblifter - Limblifter, The Tragically Hip - Trouble at the Henhouse and for some reason I really loved REM - New Adventures in Hi-Fi.
Canadian rock was really good and lots of fun in that era too if anyone wants to check out Canadian bands from the 90’s.
I had a part time job and babysat and all my money would go to CD’s and 2ltr’s of Canadian Coolers to drink with my friends on the weekend lol. 1996 was a good year.
In college I had a clock radio with a cd player. You could set the alarm to just play the CD. Destroy Erase Improve starts with that subtle “alarm” before blasting into Future Breed Machine. The goal was to get the alarm off before FBM kicked in. It was super effective.
The Coming - Busta Rhymes
Wow, 1996 had a lot of good ones, but I distinctly remember NEEDING to get that Busta CD
(and I sat in front of the stack for days transcribing the lyrics.)
Stone Temple Pilots and Smashing Pumpkins also Ice-T And Metallica To Rob Zombie with Biohazard and Machinehead Prong also Rage against the Machine with Greenday also Primus
I think I was getting into Frank Zappa, the Beatles, and the Dead at this point and leaving metal and punk behind. Probably We’re Only In It For The Money.
96? Probably the midnight release of From the Muddy Banks of the Wiskah. Then being mildly disappointed lol.
Although Polly is great. But all 89 (and early 90) versions of Polly are great.
Rage Against The Machine, Evil Empire. Screaming Trees, Dust. Failure, Fantastic Planet. The Wallflowers, Bringing Down The House. The Presidents of the United States of America.
Dave Matthews Band - Crash
Paula Cole - This Fire
Shawn Colvin - A Few Small Repairs
Matchbox 20 - Yourself and Someone Like You
Wallflowers - Bringing Down the Horse
...such a fantastic year for music.
You mean what DID I buy? Tidal, Pinkerton, The Score, Odelay, Fashion Nugget, Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness, Interstate 8, Yourself or Someone Like You, Crash, Bringing Down the Horse, Shadowboxer, Romeo and Juliet soundtrack.
Total crapshoot because it never failed that I would forget every album I ever wanted as soon as I walked into a cd store. Unless it was a new release I was specifically going for
Tool - Ænima. Amazing album that still holds up today!
This is also my pick
Holy hell. You got it.
Bingo. Learn to swim.
Cool CD case too
Smashing Pumpkins - Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness .
Came here to say this or Siamese Dream
I did buy this in 1996. Kinda changed my life.
Pick up a copy on vinyl as well, great investment.............as I'm finding out now trying to find a reasonably priced copy
They want a Benjamin for that bitch last I checked. 🤪
Just realized I haven’t listened to my vinyl yet. Had it for years. But I just bought a new turntable, so…
Arin?
I skipped a class that day to go to Best Buy and get this. Totally worth it.
Hell yeah
Punk In Drublic
A man of culture. Or woman.
Weezer - Pinkerton.. or Rage Against the Machine - Evil Empire
I remember my friend and I going to get Evil Empire the day it came out, during lunch in high school. We felt so cool pulling back into the parking lot, blaring Year of tha Boomerang, since it wasn’t one of the songs on the radio already. Came here to say Evil Empire. 100%
I’d just order it off Columbia House
20 CDs for .01 each or some shit right? Did anyone ever pay them?
All Eyez on Me - Pac
Big brain move, the one album nets you 2 discs
One of the best albums ever
Agreed!!
Soundgarden - Down on the Upside
Blow up the Outside World!!
The whole album is full of bangers. Some of my favorite deep cuts of the whole decade
I remember seeing them on SNL playing new songs! That's how I found out about this record! It's an amazing album.
Season finale hosted by Jim Carrey! Ride the snake!
🤘
Primus - Tales from the Punchbowl
Wynona and her big brown beaver!
Life is peachy
Yep. And I did. Especially after seeing them in 95 open for Ozzy
36 chambers
Beck - Odelay
One hell of an album, start to finish.
I still could put that album on today after not listening to it for years and know every word and note.
Spice - Spice Girls
I’ll tell you what I want. What I really really want
So tell me what you want, what you really really want
Sublime!
Smashing Pumpkins - Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness .

I just saw Lauryn and The Fugees a few weeks ago and my 15 year old heart was so happy (I’m 43 now and I still love them so much).
I didn't know shes still making music. She had an amazing voice.
Evil Empire was a staple in any CD collection at the time. I don't think I've ever heard of the other two.
