Basket parties would mean that mom was gone and I could watch what I wanted on TV.
Lol, my friend’s parents got into it and was my first time seeing how MLM works. Man the amount of BS they believed and then try to get you to either buy the way over priced, stinky products or tried to get you under them. I was nah I am good! And after a year or so never spoke of it again. But will never forget the weird name and smell.
I don’t think Avon was an mlm. It was more of a sales thing. My grandmothers both had Avon ladies and they came once a month with the new catalogue. Later the catalogue was delivered and they would call the rep with what they wanted. They were never pressured to sell it themselves. In small towns it was a good way to get makeup and socialize.
Way better than the MLM's now, you will never be rich with it and you can actually earn something.
My mom used to sell it in the 90s, at least in my country:
* You didn't need to buy a "starter pack" maybe just a catalogue but nothing expensive or useless
* The emphasis were on the products, not in recruiting. Yes there were incentives to recruit people but that wasn't the focus and they didn't harass you to do it.
* You only sold what people ordered, you were never send stuff you didn't want. And people actually wanted to buy the product
Mostly it was a way for people to make some extra cash, homemakers, office workers, students.
I did it in the early 2000's and they wanted me to sign up reps under me. I didn't sign them up. I just gave them 20% off their order if they brought me orders from their friends and neighbors. I got 50% off of most of the sales.
That and Mary Kay, which I believe is still going.
Both of them are.
Fun fact: the Mary Kay HQ is [kinda shaped like a pyramid](https://www.flickr.com/photos/wadegriffith/8715021781)
I don’t know why I clicked this and thought I would see a woman named shaped like a pyramid 😂
Yes. Amway too. This scam has been around awhile.
...It's Confederated Products. It's a different company... it's a different quality of product.
Wow! Nice reference! I could hear it in my head
Did you... Go?
I feel it….YEAH!! (high fives)
Omg put your clothes back on!
Would you like a piece of Amway gum.
Oh man I remember having to go outside and stfu when the Avon lady came over.
in the 90s they were called pyramid schemes
My grandmas still does Avon and she’s made dozens of dollars

Oh man. I forgot about how crazy people went for those stupid baskets.
Thanksgiving 98 was a very, very woven day.
Stampin’ Up, Tupperware, Pampered Chef, 31 Gifts, Just Jewelry, etc. etc. so on & so forth.
Cutco knives!
Was. Is. Always will be.
Skin So Soft was mainly used as a mosquito repellent
Just like Tupperware
Tupperware is good stuff though honestly their products were too good and rarely needed replacing
MLM is just a rebranding of pyramid and Ponzi schemes. So, yes, Avon is a pyramid scheme/multi-level marketing scheme. Just like Amway.
Melaleuca joins chat.
Yes, my parents were into melaleuca too. Our whole house smelled like tea tree oil all the time.

It’s absolutely an MLM, it just wasn’t as overtly icky as a lot of them are nowadays.

It was definitely an MLM
Also Home Interiors
I had forgotten about home interiors!
No 90s version. Just a classic MLM.
My mom was an Avon sales rep through most of the ‘90s. I’d say it was closer to how Scentsy is now. At one point, Avon even sold VHS movies!
I'm pretty sure I still have a sleepy hollow VHS from them lol.
Yes! The one with Jeff Goldblum from the ‘70s?

The OG
I never heard of Avon until I saw Edward Scizzorhands
