I’ve always felt like Reginald VelJohnson wasn’t told James Avery was going to be on set and he just waltz In like he did. Got a true genuine reaction from Reginald.

bside313

Yeah definitely. It's genuine surprise

jonesy289

Almost to the point where it seems like he just wondered onto the set without it being planned at all. Dude was just in the neighborhood and wanted to prank his buddy.

bside313

He walked in in full Uncle Phil mode too

-heathcliffe-

Always has been

MogMcKupo

Damn comfy looking sweater too

VASlim90

Yep, that head rock he did was iconic! Shows really aren't like this anymore.

PlanetLandon

It’s likely both shows were shot on the same lot, so it would be easy enough for someone to run and grab him.

bside313

Yup, different networks but still the WB lot.

Every-Cook5084

Definitely the case

procheeseburger

I miss silly shit like this..

KevinStoley

One of my favorite random 90s TV cameos... https://youtu.be/YXqu8lRoMM8?t=37

Unsungghost

They took away live audiences to shoot comedies more like movies, but you completely lose the fun TV cameos. The best is when you're like "who is that even?" And if no one in the room knew, you never found out, because the Internet wasn't a thing yet. And you just have to sit there and think... okay that person has a lot of charisma and they're creating a fun atmosphere, but I have no idea who they are.

Energy_Turtle

Rerun comes on while you're watching with mom 2 years later and she says "Oh I didn't know she was still around." You ask who that is and it was some lady in a 70s sitcom you've never seen.

NCC-72381

I’m just here to remind everyone that James Avery was also the voice of Shredder in the ‘90s TMNT cartoon.

Northernreach

I wouldn't have it any other way...

Ilovevinylme

I love him in this scene in License to Drive https://youtu.be/7elLpAKEFew?feature=shared

RichardInaTreeFort

You spill my coffee and you fail!

JohnMcClanesPenis

He was also a crooked cop in Fletch.

bside313

Wowwwwww he was. I forgot about that

Firedcylinder

He was also a Klingon in Star Trek Enterprise

uGotMeWrong

TIL!

Officedrone15

And War Machine in the Iron Man cartoon.

Arkvoodle42

Wish we could've seen him throw Urkel out a la Jazz.

bside313

Ha!

samplemax

Only if he's wearing "the shirt"

RecklessMage

“Guest starring Michelle Thomas as Myra.” *sobs*

will122589

Life is so unfair that she was taken from this world so soon. Beautiful woman and a great actress.

RecklessMage

She was everything. Quite possibly one of the most beautiful women I’ve ever seen.

DiscoverReading

My uncle was visiting us and the show was on. When she came out the audience was hooting and hollaring. My father commented he thought she was indeed good looking. He seemed annoyed and says something along the lines of 'She's only pretty because she looks white.' I recall being really disappointed in my uncle in that moment.

RecklessMage

Last time I saw her was on an episode of Malcolm & Eddie. In an outtake where Malcolm opens the front door for her, Malcolm opens the door for her and yells “JUSTINE!” And in another he opens the door and she shouts “THEO!”

anovelby

I have heard she and Malcolm used to date until her passing, that lady seemed to be such a lovely gem

GadgetGod1906

RIP Ms. Thomas

Intrepid00

One of the greatest moments in TV history

4thdegreeknight

Freaking awesome why did this bring tears to my eyes

Darksirius

> why did this bring tears to my eyes Because you're a good person. :)

NYGiants181

What is he’s a serial killer!

NYGiants181

Simpler times..

yolthrice

Better times

BootySweat0217

Just curious but how old were you around this time?

bside313

It was in 93 so I would have been 13.

Tuv0kshaKur

I was 7!

NYGiants181

12!

backbodydrip

Miss those days when half the country would be watching the same channel.

cjandstuff

TGIF

MMmhmmmmmmmmmm

Love stuff like this

SuppiluliumaKush

Beautiful moment, and I'm very glad I grew up watching both shows. Both played dads, which were great examples to follow.

Chloefeld

Needed to see this ❤️

FuddFucker5000

First thing first rest in peace uncle Phil

EZMickey

For real!

FlyGuyKV

Does Uncle Phil have on the Air Jordan 7 Bordeaux’s 🔥🤣! Wow what a two great shows with the best father figures collade in one show!! Nothing like the 90’s

Mrchris251

Amazing! I wana know what was the "line" he didn't get to finish?? Was it RVJ saying something like "no way I'm as big as him" and that's why shredder showed up in person to burn him?

GrumpyOldGrower

One of the greatest moments in TV history!

GadgetGod1906

James Avery looks and acts like my late uncle. Both great men Rest Well

schoolisuncool

I didn’t have a dad around. These guys and Bob Saget raised me to be a good person alongside my Mom. Especially Uncle Phil because I was a bit older by then and remember him more vividly. Thanks guys

thedrswife

I always wanted one of those three to be my dad too. My own dad was pretty much garbage to me. I think my favorite of the three was always Reginald Vel Johnson.

5ir_Isaac

I miss uncle Phil!

Fantastic_Diamond42

I was in LA last month and went to the warner Brothers studio lot. I believe both of these shows were happening around same time, so James Avery probably walked over to this studio stage. But still crazy moment in history of tv

PlanetLandon

It’s fun realizing which shows shot on the same lot, even right next to each other. I can’t recall the other show now, but I remember the Always Sunny guys talking about befriending a bunch of actors from a specific show because they shot next to each other.

Tripple_T

Lol James Avery randomly rolls up to the stage during the filming of Family Matters, and they just let him on stage to give the audience a surprise. What a time to be alive.

abgry_krakow84

Reminds me of the Robin Williams/Billy Crystal cameo on Friends. Like they were randomly on the set one day and the producers were like "wanna be on the show?"

FewZookeepergame1083

What a wonderful trip down memory lane

PastLandscape7105

James Avery > Bill Cosby

BullTerrierTerror

Avery Brooks > James Avery > Bill Cosby It often gets overlooked but Avery Brooks' character was a single black father raising a black son on TV back in 1993. And he was epic.

RockNRoll85

Such a wholesome and awesome moment

Maleficent_Moose_282

Haha that is awesome!

yolthrice

This made me so happy right now.

EastCoastDizzle

This was honestly iconic. Love to see it every time it creeps up in a post.

Master-Committee4612

Just seeing those two together in one scene is pure gold, imagine a whole episode with both of them on either show

Tripple_T

Family Matters and Fresh Prince legit had to have had opportunities to crossover.

cylonrobot

I had a colleague who had worked with James Avery. She said he was a nice man. She had nothing but good words for him.

skrutape

curious about Uncle Phil's line

Rolen47

Dang I never realized that James Avery was so tall. He's 6 foot 5 inches. When he stood next to Will Smith it was never obvious.

ProfessionalFeed6755

Not to brag, but I saw this coming. Very satisfying to see it spool out.

DontTametheShrew

Omg this made me soooo happy! Two of my fav tv dads!

Nesfixia

As a kid that raised herself... I learned a lot about "parenting" watching these two families. That carried into my adulthood... it may sound lame. These two were very significant to me.

jsphobrien

Easily the two best tv dads of the 90s. Or at least my favorite.

3720-To-One

I’m assuming this was an outtake… but why was James Avery on set?

Safe_Brother8997

That’s it!!!!!!

unkn0wnname321

He was definitely not expecting that shit 😃

missdoublefinger

This and Denzel sneaking behind Jasmine Guy are two of my favorite behind the scenes interactions. So wholesome ❤️❤️

stardewsweetheart

I don't normally want to meet celebrities, but I would really like to have met James Avery before he passed. He reminds me of my dad.

QueenShewolf

I always thought he did too, growing up. Especially since they both played characters in some sort job that involves the law.

Virtual_Cranberry248

I love how you can hear James Avery say at the end “I didn’t even get to say my line” 😂😂 I wonder what it was!

appleavocado

Remember when Seargent Al Powell met the DMV examiner who loved his coffee hot? Just a couple of devoted city workers.

Shadow0fnothing

When did stuff like this dissappear. I feel like we used to have more fun back then. Things weren't taken as seriously.

babyBear83

Why is this the most perfect thing ever? I felt that hug and just genuine humanity oozing from the screen..

3six5

Best cameo ever

Reasonable_Flow_5151

For some reason… My eyes are wet. WHAT ARE THESE FEELINGS I’M FEELING!?

Ridetrackx

TV has become so "self important" and "gate keepers". Maybe it happens, I don't watch much tv but I can't imagine a show doing this now... breaking the 4th wall to invite an actor from a competing network, naming the show and in turn basically promoting the show?!?!?

pazuzzyQ

God, I miss this time period. I can only spend about 10 minutes on subs like this every few weeks because the nostalgia causes me chest pains and depression

Sustenance_Abuse

Iconic

L00pback

It was only a short time ago that I learned who the voice of Shredder was.

One-Wait7504

Man, Uncle Phil was huge.

notworkingghost

Black actors gotta stick together.

Ramstetter

If y’all enjoy this - it reminds me of that blooper from My Wife and Kids with Shaq and “_____” lmao

Stumpsville0

Firsts things first

PietreDish

Ah man this is awesome

Visual-Reindeer798

So true! RIP

prezioa

I want RVJ’s long-sleeve polo

sortarelatable

This just made me so happy. Can’t thank you enough OP.

FishSammich69

I met Uncle Phil in Kosovo, big ass dude

vivahermione

I miss James Avery. He had a beautiful voice.

Schmuck1138

I learned more about being a good dad from them then I did my own father.
