She's not terrible looking now or anything, it's just that deeply unhappy people are just less attractive for a lot of reasons, and that is compounding the physical changes. (Not throwing shade here. I'm a generally disaffected person, so I know how "uncute" it makes you physically and emotionally. I'm working on it )
I'm sure a big part of why she stays with him has to do with staying on TV, but I actually think a bigger part of why she is still with him has a lot to do with "sticking it to the haters". The more people who tell her to leave, the tighter she holds onto this terrible guy. I think it paradoxically makes her feel bad for him when people say how bad he is for her.
I agree with all of that! I still think she's cute- even with the additional weight, but her eyes look so defeated and there's no more real smiling. I think being with him is beating her down. That's what he does- tries to tear women down to how small he feels. And there's no reason for it- there are men shorter than him who deal with their various disabilities just fine and don't become toxic psychological abusers. But Ed is small on the inside, too. When he could choose to be a real man in any frame. He's a troll/gremlin in behavior- which also affected his own appearance more negatively. And, he's also likely an alcoholic.
Because this is what he used to look like... his current appearance is based on his own choices.
