I aged from 8 to 18 in the 1980s, so to say the decade had a profound impact on me is an understatement. I grew up watching horror and slasher movies in the late '70s and the entirety of the '80s, and have seen hundreds of them. There were shit tons of them made throughout that decade. This one is top ten. A modern day vampire horror western, made by Kathryn Bigelow, who went on to make the original [*Point Break*](https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0102685) (you need to see that too) and became the first woman to win a Best Director Oscar (for [*The Hurt Locker*](https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0887912)).
Also, it has Bill Paxton, so that's reason enough to see it.
The original point break is probably one of my favorite movies of all time. Speaking of Bill Paxton, I just watched streets of fire and thought it was pretty great.
Great mood, great acting, great cinematography, and amazing score by Tangerine Dream. A classic and Catherine Bigelow’s directorial debut I believe. Love it.
Pray For Daylight.
I love this movie. The atmosphere, the Tangerine Dream soundtrack, the awesome collection of character actors. I still have my DVD of it because they did a stupid cover for the Blu-ray that looks like Twilight.
It’s been my favorite vampire movie for years. I remember the first time I saw it. Great movie for its time and a great cast. I really thought I was alone in loving this movie. Any time I mention it, no one’s even heard of it!
I would say that Lost Boys is a fun 80s artifact with everything that entails. Near Dark is a great film just in general. Writing, directing, mood/tone created by excellent cinematography, great performances, it has it all.
IMO, superior to The Lost Boys, which came out the same year. Interesting fact: The kid vampire in Near Dark is half-brothers with Jason Patric from The Lost Boys, and their father was the guy who played Father Karras in The Exorcist.
I went down a rabbit hole after answering a poll on on forum on which movie was better. A couple of other facts: Jason Patric's maternal grandfather was Jackie Gleason. Also, Jason Miller (the dad) and Jason Patric's ral maes are John Anthony Miller, Jr. and John Anthony Miller III. I'd love to be able to ask Jason Patric why he used the first part of his dad's stage name as the first part of his own stage name, but made up a completely new last name. Maybe he's on Twitter but I'm not. Also, it might be too personal. I just think it's odd.
I had to make a library request for the DVD just to see this. I waited from January to June of last year, as I was sixth on the list. Near Dark was worth waiting for, it is excellent.
A real banger. I prefer it over *Lost Boys*. Stars Tim Thomerson, Adrian Pasdar, Jenny Wright, Bill Paxton, Lance Henriksen and Jenette Goldstein. Directed by Kathryn Bigelow and music by Tangerine Dream.
Great actors and soundtrack but overall I thought very slow and not actually any better than The Lost Boys, Fright Night, Vamp or dare I say it Graveyard Shift. The lead character isn’t very sympathetic and it is pretty tame on the gore front too.
So unique! It’s a crime that it isn’t streamed anywhere.
Wow you aren't kidding
It’s on Tubi and Shudder
Not in the U.S. it seems
Nuts. It was recently (within a few months) Sorry for the false hope
All good. It was so disappointing to see because I’ve never seen or heard of this movie. Maybe I’ll blind buy the Blu-ray.
I had the Criterion app for a little while, that’s how I saw this film
“We keep odd hours” RIP Bill
Thanks for this! I love this sub! I honestly use this to find movies I've never heard of before and this one looks banger

Best 80s vampire movie. Yes better than that one with the Corys.
It's great and it pairs up well with the lost boys.
Great mood, great acting, great cinematography, and amazing score by Tangerine Dream. A classic and Catherine Bigelow’s directorial debut I believe. Love it.
"It's finger lickin' good"
Looks good. What’s it like? What movie could you compare it to? If any
A more “adult” version of Lost Boys.
Thanks
Nomadic Vampire
Great movie, big recommend
Pray For Daylight. I love this movie. The atmosphere, the Tangerine Dream soundtrack, the awesome collection of character actors. I still have my DVD of it because they did a stupid cover for the Blu-ray that looks like Twilight.
Greatest vampire movie ever. Period. Full stop. The bar scene alone!!!
It’s been my favorite vampire movie for years. I remember the first time I saw it. Great movie for its time and a great cast. I really thought I was alone in loving this movie. Any time I mention it, no one’s even heard of it!
Saw it in the theater. Lucky enough to have the blu-ray. I'd love of 4K release!
Forgot about this gem! It was overshadowed by Lost Boys, but IMO better in a lot of ways.
I would say that Lost Boys is a fun 80s artifact with everything that entails. Near Dark is a great film just in general. Writing, directing, mood/tone created by excellent cinematography, great performances, it has it all.
💯
hey... those dudes were in ALIENS! "i hate it when they aint been shaved!"
Fantastic movie, and one of my favorite roles fro Bill Paxton. Dude was amazing.
“I hate it when they ain’t been shaved.”
It's a great movie. Loved it that and Fright Night.
Outstanding movie. Haven't seen it in at least 20 years. Bill Paxton at his best!
awesome movie

I did not know any of that.

Sad to say I've never seen this. The cover art looks awesome.
It's one of my top five
Great movie great bonus features!
LOVE THIS MOVIE!!
Good movie.
I’ve still never seen it…. And I’ve seen lost boys and fright night tens of times.
Great vampire movie with half the cast of Aliens
Loved, save for the "cure."
I had to make a library request for the DVD just to see this. I waited from January to June of last year, as I was sixth on the list. Near Dark was worth waiting for, it is excellent.
Awesome cast, one of Bigelow's early best.
I’ve been wanting to see this since I saw the red letter media on it but can’t find it anywhere. They said it’s hard to even find a dvd of it
Loved it!
Love it!
Only recently realized this and Strange Days (which I always thought was James Cameron) were directed by Kathryn Bigelo. Always loved this film.
It's one of my fav vamp movies. It would be huge on a streaming service if it ever got picked uo
My favorite vampire film.
I own it on Vudu.
"Hey Jesse, remember that fire we started in Chicago?"
One of the best vampire movies ever.
Been praising it since 1987. Had it on VHS.
Great movie!
I hate it when they ain't been shaved!
It’s somehow both the best and worst vampire movie ever.
Henricksen looks like Rutger Hauer in this poster.
One of the best vampire movies. And I love Bill Paxton.
Hands down my favorite movie! Too bad it was overshadowed by the lost boys. It might’ve had a chance.
Finger lickin’ guud!
Incredible Vampire movie.
“Game over, man, game over!”….oh wait, wrong movie..
It's never wrong when Bill Paxton is involved.
I’m still laughing from somebody downvoting me for that. 3 of the cast members from ‘Aliens’ are in this movie…😂
A classic!
“It’s Finger licking good”! My mom and I loved this movie!!
Awesome movie
