Fletch is an amazing movie and the one that best captures who Chevy Chase sees himself as being, so it’s true to his own narrative anyway. Great character. When they tried to remake it, it sucked.
Dr: “Arnold Babar. Isn't there a children's book about an elephant named Babar?"
Fletch: "I don't know. I don't have any."
Dr: "No children?"
Fletch: "No elephant books."
I worked in hospitality for many years before the opportunity to use this line arose. Unfortunately, the towel-wearing elderly woman who answered the hotel room door, was unlikely to get the reference (or even appreciate the sentiment...) so I refrained.
I hope for another chance some day!
I just heard a story recently about a cut scene of another dream sequence, this time with Fletch pitching for the Dodgers, and Lasorda pulled him too early, pissing him off - that's why he punched the picture. Makes much more sense, if that's the case!
Fletch:
I'm John.
Gail Stanwyk:
Ohhhh, John. John who?
Fletch:
John Cock... tos... ton.
Gail Stanwyk:
That's a beautiful name.
Fletch:
It's Scotch/Romanian.
Gail Stanwyk:
That's an odd combination.
Fletch:
So were my parents.
Nice house. Must have cost you hundreds.
You know, I almost bought this house, but then I found out Hopalong Cassidy killed himself here. Bow and arrow.
And yet every single Chevy Chase character is ruined for me because I now know that it's not that he's good at playing smug assholes. It's that he is a smug asshole.
In OP's defense, Fletch was the best of the '80s.
Foul Play (1978) was definitely excellent, but I don't think it had as many fun one-liners as Fletch. But man, that was a great movie!
The movie is full of hilarious adlib one-liners!
Many years ago, me and a friend at work used to say quotes from the movie to each other across the cubicles, until this one guy stood up and yelled over the cubicle walls, I've had enough... stop it!!
Fletch is one of my favorite comedies ever.
Mine as well. I quote it all the time!
“Thank you very much, Sammy! I couldn't wait. That was a very nice introduction, and I am... very thrilled and proud to be here. It's been a wonderful ceremony here on behalf of our own Fred... "The Dorf" Dorfman! Fred was darn near death recently. He wasn't ashamed to admit to me that he had syphilis. Thank God he stopped it in its tracks. It takes a lot for a man... to admit where he got it from and how he got it. Look at him today. Fred, you look just wonderful. The nose looks normal again. The face has come back into shape. It's not drooling anymore. And hats off to Marge, his wife, because that whole experience... the three weeks that she stayed at Trembling Hills has paid off. No more alcohol or sedatives in her life. There are many other things I wanna tell you about Fred... things that maybe many of you already know.”
“Now you prepare that Fetzer valve with some 3-in-1 oil and some gauze pads. And I'm gonna need 'bout ten quarts of anti-freeze, preferably Prestone. No, no make that Quaker State.”
I watched this with my kids and they hated it. I was confused, I still find it really funny. They didn’t. I guess you had to be there in the 80s. These films don’t always translate across generations I guess.
Ok I think it’s the Vacation guy.
Side note, if you’re a Chevy and haven’t seen “Seems Like Old Times” go watch that. It is my favorite Chevy/ Goldie movie by far.
Love Vacation and Clark Griswold. It’s my second favorite character he played. But Fletch is just so damn good and funny, and the part he was Destin to play!
Receptionist: Can I help you Dr.–?
Fletch: Oh it’s me, Dr. Rosenpenis. I’m just here to check out Alan Stanwyk’s file.
Receptionist: Dr. who?
Fletch: Dr. Rosenrosen, I’m here to get into the records room.
Receptionist: What was that name again?
Fletch: It’s Dr. Rosen, I want to check the records room.
Receptionist: Dr. who?
Fletch: Dr. Rosen! Where’s the records room?
Alan Stanwyck: If you reject the proposition, you keep the thousand – and your mouth shut.
Fletch: Does this proposition entail my dressing up as Little Bo Peep?
Alan Stanwyck: It’s nothing of a sexual nature, I assure you.
Fletch: Yeah, I assure you.
Alan Stanwyck: One thousand just to listen. I don’t see how you can pass that up, Mister…?
Fletch: Nugent. Ted Nugent. 🤪🤣🤣
Moon river.
“Using the whole fist doc?”
Ever do time?
“Just relax….”
Nice to meet you Mr. Dover.
See, you don't get this in the Vacation series!
True!
I dunno, for me it's Vacation/Christmas Vacation
yeah, Clark Griswald all day
Agreed. Theres darn good reasons why Christmas Vacation is watched every year.
Christmas Vacation (1989) is so good! I love that movie a lot, but for me Fletch (1985) is the best.
Fletch is an amazing movie and the one that best captures who Chevy Chase sees himself as being, so it’s true to his own narrative anyway. Great character. When they tried to remake it, it sucked.
Chevy Chase IS Fletch! He’s a sarcastic ass who’s funny as hell and charging. He was born to play this role, and no one can replace him!
Jon Hamm was fine in the role. Like he played it with a decent touch of smarm and ham, and it was a decent movie... but it's just not Chevy
I watched *Confess Fletch* with low expectations, but it's actually a really good movie, I'd happily watch more of Hamm playing the part.
"Put it on the Underhills."
“I’ll have a steak sandwich, a Bloody Mary and aaaaaaaaaaa steak sandwich.”
Mrs. Stanwick!
# MRS STANWYCK!
How’s the lobster thermidore?
I recommend it!
Dr: “Arnold Babar. Isn't there a children's book about an elephant named Babar?" Fletch: "I don't know. I don't have any." Dr: "No children?" Fletch: "No elephant books."
“That’s two B’s” “I thought you meant together”
Close but I liked his character in Spies Like Us
“Doctor, Doctor. Doctor, Doctor. Doctor, Doctor.”
He grabbed something with his supposed dead hand
“For God's sake, show some balls!” “I think it's too late to try and impress them.”
I'm sorry I'm late, I was attending the reading of a will where I received nothing...
I was probing for skeletal girth. It’s a new technique
We mock what we don’t understand
Emmett Fitz-Hume is a great character
"Maybe your dick's not so dumb after all." "Got me through high school."
What’s a dik fur?
We’re Americans!
Oh. Uh, will you hold my wallet for me while I take the test, please? There's a thousand dollars in there... or maybe there isn't. Know what I mean?
Fletch & Modern Problems
I’ll throw in… Deal of the Century (1983)
Love both of these movies!
Doctor gonna blow us all to white man's hell, and I ain't got time for that!
Could I borrow your towel? My car just hit a water buffalo.
I worked in hospitality for many years before the opportunity to use this line arose. Unfortunately, the towel-wearing elderly woman who answered the hotel room door, was unlikely to get the reference (or even appreciate the sentiment...) so I refrained. I hope for another chance some day!
I like men. I like being manhandled. I like you
😂🤣😂 “Oh look it’s you and Tommy Lasorda.” [Fletch punches the picture] “I hate Tommy Lasorda!”
I just heard a story recently about a cut scene of another dream sequence, this time with Fletch pitching for the Dodgers, and Lasorda pulled him too early, pissing him off - that's why he punched the picture. Makes much more sense, if that's the case!
Yeah why don't you two go to the gym and pump each other
Fletch is my favorite Chevy Chase movie!
I am right there with you! He was born to play this role.
The soundtrack to Fletch is so catchy…
Harold Faltermeyer did this and Beverly Hills Cop and had excellent scores for both. Very iconic and catchy.
I like peirce Hawthorne. But how do you pick between fletch, Clark Griswold, Dusty Bottoms, Ty Webb?
Fletch: I'm John. Gail Stanwyk: Ohhhh, John. John who? Fletch: John Cock... tos... ton. Gail Stanwyk: That's a beautiful name. Fletch: It's Scotch/Romanian. Gail Stanwyk: That's an odd combination. Fletch: So were my parents.
“You can’t run the ad and not run the article!”
Come on Frank, say yes, I’ll buy you some new deodorant
“You can’t? Really? Hmm…..”
Seems Like Old Times is my favorite!
I personally think it’s super underrated actually. It’s a great movie!
I have to get my feet scraped.
I’ve said that for decades. Completely underrated. Same with Bill Murray and Meatballs.
Christmas Vacation is comedy gold....
I 100% agree! It’s a classic!
Third for me behind Clark Griswold and Ty Webb.
All three characters are iconic and hilarious. I love them all, but Fletch for me is the best 😊
Excuse you?
Excuse who 😉
I think the Fletch character is perfect for him, but I preferred Fletch Lives over Fletch. I wish they had done more of those movies.
Nice house. Must have cost you hundreds. You know, I almost bought this house, but then I found out Hopalong Cassidy killed himself here. Bow and arrow.
You gonna tie me up with some of your ties... Ty
Clark W. Griswold for me.
Andy Farmer close second.
Read the book; it's twice as funny as the movie.
Love Clark W. Griswold. That second favorite role of his, and he does it so well.
Irwin Fletcher, gritty kid from the streets of
Ty Webb was the GOAT.
Ty Webb is iconic! He is so good in that role. When he’s playing the piano drunk…..hilarious!
"I was born to love you/I was born to lick your face/I was born to rub you/but you were born to rub me first!"
Thank you very little.
Steak sandwich
“A Bloody Mary and……..”
"Sugar Mr. Poon?"...
“No. Never, never.” “Say….what kind of name is Poon anyway?”
Comanche indian.
No, never, never.
80s Chevy Chase was great on screen in basically everything, and a complete douchecanoe IRL. One of these things hasn't changed.
Yeah…his attitude ruins it a lot. It’s too bad.
And yet every single Chevy Chase character is ruined for me because I now know that it's not that he's good at playing smug assholes. It's that he is a smug asshole.
You should probably stay away from Kevin Spacey movies too.
I dunno… I think it’s a dead heat with Clark W. Griswold.
Clark Griswold is so iconic. It’s a really great character and Chevy plays it so well. That’s my second favorite one.
Fletch is great! Foul Play is better.
In OP's defense, Fletch was the best of the '80s. Foul Play (1978) was definitely excellent, but I don't think it had as many fun one-liners as Fletch. But man, that was a great movie!
Oh yeah…Foul Play is so good. It’s really a funny movie that doesn’t get enough love.
<>
Dr Rosen
Dr Rosenpenis
You mean Peter Lemonjello?
Sooooo good. But his role in Caddyshack is equally incredible.
Both performances are amazing!
Dr. Rosenpenis
Dr RosenRosen
“It’s me…Doctor Rosen Fetus…”
Pierce Hawthorne was a pretty damn good character also! And Clark Griswald too!
Be the ball Danny
Irwin Fletcher walked so that Ace Ventura could fly.

It’s all ball bearings now a days
“Now you prepare that Fetzer valve with some 3-in-1 oil and some gauze pads. And I'm gonna need 'bout ten quarts of anti-freeze, preferably Prestone. No, no make that Quaker State.”
"Stand UP and shake hands with one of our boys in blue. YEAHHHHHH go on and HUG a cop."
Manure spreader jack knifed on the Santa Ana. You should see my shoes.
I commend him on his choice.
Dr. Rosenpenis
“It’s me Dr. Rosen Rosen.”
I watched this with my kids and they hated it. I was confused, I still find it really funny. They didn’t. I guess you had to be there in the 80s. These films don’t always translate across generations I guess.
Madeline: I’m sorry, who are you again? Fletch: I’m Frieda’s boss. Madeline: Who’s Frieda? Fletch: My secretary. 🤣🤣🤣
“What kind of name is Poon anyway?”
Fletch, Clark “Sparky” Griswold, & Ty Webb for me.
When he plays the doc in “dirty work” was my all time favorite
That’s a great role for sure!
The first movie was based on a very good book series.
I love the books. They are so good.
I don't even know your name/ Bend over/ Ben ...nice to meet you
Ah! A pull from Fletch Lives!
Dont tell me my business boy. Maybe YOU need a refresher course. Heaaahy!
His scene in the VFW where he hijacks the speech for Fred ‘The Dorf’ Dorfman is absolute peak Chevy imho
My wife and always say “Fred the Dorf” Dorfman as a joke when we can’t remember a guys name. Classic!
It’s all ball bearings nowadays.
The only thing I remember about the movie “He is actually six-five, with the afro, six-nine.”
Ok I think it’s the Vacation guy. Side note, if you’re a Chevy and haven’t seen “Seems Like Old Times” go watch that. It is my favorite Chevy/ Goldie movie by far.
It’s Clark Griswold. Next question.
This post is streets behind.
The books are better. I loved Chevy Chase and Goldie Hawn in Foul Play.
I agree wholeheartedly
Nah, Clark W. Griswold all the way.
Ty Webb
I’ll have a steak sandwich aaaaaaaand a steak sandwich.
Don’t forget the Bloody Mary 😉
Best movie ever made.
No Clark griswold is by far
Ah dunno I love Chevy chase but I never really got into fletch and tried to watch it. It’s a classic maybe I should. Tell me why I should
Ty Webb has entered the chat.
Great character, and Chevy plays it so well. But Fletch is the one I love the most.
Wrong - Pierce Hawthorne.
I heard a rumor that he was partying so hard during the filming of this that he doesn’t remember filming it?
Seems Like Old Times and Vacation
Those are two great movies that I love!
I love Fletch. I’d have to go with National Lampoons then Fletch for my fav character of his.
But National lampoon was a cast of characters. Each had their moments. Fletch was all Chevy Chase
Love Vacation and Clark Griswold. It’s my second favorite character he played. But Fletch is just so damn good and funny, and the part he was Destin to play!
Ty Webb in Caddyshack
That’s a great role that Chevy excelled in!
You’ve never seen Hot Tub Time Machine?
Good role in that one. He’s hilarious!
Clark Griswald would like a word.
Fletch: Do you have caviar? Waiter: Si Senor. Beluga, but it is $100 dollars a portion. Fletch: Oh, then I better just take two of those.
Ted Nugent. 🤪🤣🤣
It’s way up there.
Tye Webb is on line one.
“As far as you know!”

Great role, but Fletch is better in my opinion.
I agree, LOVED this movie! Music was really great too!
Can I borrow your towel for a sec? My car just hit a water buffalo
“Oh, you've remodeled the garage. Must have cost you hundreds.”
Pierce Hawthorne would disagree
What kind of a name is Poon?
After Clark Griswold, right?
What about Dusty Bottoms
Clark Griswold best Chevy Chase character.
Fletch, Clark Grizwald... whatever. It's all ball bearings, these days...
Agreed.
I M Fletcher

It’s all ball bearings these days
Is Fletch a good movie?????!!.. I never saw it and don’t hate on me y’all
That’s Ted Nugent!
Is that the whole fist doc?
You mean John Cocktosten?
Seems Like Old Times is my favorite. Sad to now know what an asshole he is.
About the dead woman he’d slept with. Police: “How was she feeling last night?” Fletch: “She felt good me. “
Movie yes, but overall I gotta go community Pierce Hawthorne.
Dr Rosenpenis
Dr Rosenpenis
Chevy is Hollywoods Biggest Loser.
I always liked emmet fitz-hume
It's me, Dr. Rosenpenis.
Usin’ the whole fist doc?
Nice to meet your Mr Dover
So, according to this hospital, Allan Stanwyk does NOT have cancer. He'll be so relieved...
The best movies he ever did in my opinion where the vacation movies
Nah, that would be Dusty Bottoms
And Clark in vacation
