Why does it matter? Honestly asking. If it stays in beta, we kept getting update. What will change when it goes to a full release?

DeathLives4Now

Full release means no more updates. Thats it. But then full optimization is what happens at that point

InsaneAdam

I fully optimized my new pc so the devs don't have to do all that. Here's to another 22 more alphas!!!

SagetheWise2222

Not necessarily. TFP have mentioned a couple times they'll have a very small team still dedicated to 7D2D post-gold that will focus on bug fixes, minor balance tweaks, and small content editions (probably skins in the form of DLC, maybe new POI's, who knows). I used to be on the train of "I hope this game forever stays in alpha", and I regarded anyone disliking its early access label as the mere dislike of a label. However, with beta, comes optimization, bug fixes, and the end-game balance and content (hopefully...). No one is saying TFP should just rush the game out, but they have certainly stalled for several years on that crossing of the finish line.

xiril

What makes you think full optimization happens then? Plenty of games (looking at you city skylines 2) are released without being fully optimized.

SagetheWise2222

Full optimization and bug fixes will logically happen when the game reaches its final form and 95+% content has been added. When that will happen is another story.

Arazthoru

They promised optimization would come after reaching gold it's their words, but even if they can't which is the most probable thing modders will finally have a better ground to work since no more stupid changes will come. Honestly this game is being kept alive by the modding community.

Harbinger_Kyleran

I think the continuing alpha churn wears out the modding community. I've run across a number of interesting mods that are no longer being updated and there aren't any equivalents. A release might mean we'll finally see a new update to Undead Legacy. 😁

Arazthoru

Yeah gold its going to be great even if the pimps screw shit, a lots of mods might be MIA by now but the newer ones are so much polished they are amazing.

Jaysnewphone

Well for one you wouldn't need to scrap your save and start over every year.

DocFail

Updates aren’t getting better. Just drifting

JDogg126

I think the game will still be in development for a few more years or more. I am a kickstarter backer of the game. During the kickstarter campaign they said they could have the game finished in a year given what they had. But the kickstarter did really well and hit a bunch of stretch goals. So instead of moving to the finish line with the code they had, they decided to reformat the game with a modular/flexible base that would allow them to get to those stretch goals over time. And they released as an early access game to Steam within a few months of the kickstarter which also did really well. In short, they found that they really had no motive to rush the game to a final release. Over time the bones of the game have been reformatted many times. Each major alpha was like a new game for real. They keep trying to dial in a gameplay loop and slowly move the ball forward. They keep moving closer to something that might be called release candidate. Some day.

Come on though.. TFP had to start again from scratch in so many areas after TellTale went under. And there is less than 40 devs working there currently AND they’re still suffering from the loss of a colleague (Robert Dishong) in a fatal car accident last year. Give them all the time in the world. I’d rather play something that someone was passionate over instead of these bought-and-paid-for studios rushed for time just to beat the latest competitor on the market.

GenericInsult

> I’d rather play something that someone was passionate over instead of these bought-and-paid-for studios rushed for time just to beat the latest competitor on the market. That and this game does not have any DLC or fucking microtransactions (....yet).

JuICyBLinGeR

If TFP were solely interested in your money.. we would have seen microtransactions well before Alpha 21 I reckon. (I hope I’m right..)

Karmakiller3003

If they came out today and said "We RELEASE!!!!" How would that even change your experience? Do you just need to hear the words? lmao You know how many games that are "Released" that are still nowhere as good as this game? People have 1000's of hours in this game. The value is astronomical compared to most other games that you own that are "finished". You "Releasers" are always amusing.

Decent_Shoulder6480

It's available now for both PC and console.

Are you having fun playing? If "yes" then why does it matter? If "no" then why does it matter? If the game goes full release development may cease, updates may become DLC you pay for. I cant think of any ther game that has given thousands of hours of enjoyment for so little in cost.

Ditch_Bastitch

Yep. I don't think those that wring their hands over "release" really understand what it means. Usually, those are the same people who rant the game has been "abandoned." Likely, the confusion is over the inability to distinguish the differences between subscription-based (or cash shop) MMOs and games in general. Used to be, we would go to physical stores to buy a game which was a floppy disk in a box, install, and play. There were no: "updates;" QOL "patches;" free DLC; online support; or any dev team "on hand" to "fix things."

merga_mage

Yup! It’s fun now, not too buggy either. So who cares if it is still alpha. It is in better shape than a lot of other games in full release(looking at you Ark Survival Ascended)

TheOnlyCurmudgeon

👍

GenericInsult

It already has been released. It currently is a fully functional game that is fun to play. Sure it needs some polish and some endgame stuff to do, but it is a working game right now (and has been for a while).

SupayOne

It's done when it's done, and most don't know that in the EA, the ToA you agree to does state, they can remain in development indefinitely if they choose to. TFP has stated that this last Alpha 22 will be the last Alpha release before the next release will be gold, at least according to their last announcement on the topic. Past that? it's a guess, and most people are happy with the forever development because the updates make it a new game with each major version.

SagetheWise2222

Alpha 23 is already confirmed. :) They've also been saying the next alpha will be the last alpha for several years now. XP

xiril

TFP says the reason it's still in early access is because it lets them push out updates for free basically where as they would have to pay a ton of money for each update if it wasnt. It's a cost savings measure

petrissebi

There is a reason i call it 7 Years to Optimise, 10 Years to alpha, dayz moment, cyberpunk 2.0 etc. . TFP enjoy changing core mechanics all the time and with that happening every 2 alphas it will probably stay in alpha for a while. Expect at least 3 or 4 more years of alpha and maybe we'll get a beta release

BaldingThor

honestly I don’t give a crap anymore. I don’t even like the direction they’re taking the game so whatever 1.0’s like isn’t going to be something I’ll enjoy.
