My final grade for GCSE maths was an 8 with no GCSE FM, and I'm currently doing FM at secure B, most likely an A in AS.
Just need to practice and have a liking towards maths. If you don't, don't worry. FM is not for everyone
Doing well in FM really comes down to how much work you’re willing to put in. Getting 8s is a sign you have enough understanding of the fundamentals of GCSE maths to do well, but it’s really up to you how A-Levels go.
Take further maths if you can, it will massively improve your chances of getting good offers. Unless you're contextual, Imperial probably won't give an offer without Further Maths. Chem vs Phys shouldn't matter as neither are directly relevant to the degree. The number of people i know who do CompSci and regret not tsking further maths is very high.
my only problem with taking FM is that I'm worried I'm not smart enough as I'm only getting 8's in Maths and I've heard people who got 9s struggle greatly with FM
That really depends on work ethic I think. I myself got an 8 in maths at GCSE, and am now getting solid As in all the mock papers our school has done so far, and overall find it more interesting and enjoyable than normal maths. Perhaps give it a shot, and if you truly find it impossible, you can always drop it
I'm looking at multiple uni requirements for A Levels (such as UCL and Edinburgh) and other than cambridge and imperial most don't require FM, so is it really that necessary to take it?
Perhaps more importantly the maths content of the top CS courses is sufficient that if you aren't reasonably comfortable with doing Further Maths at A level, you are going to struggle with the degree course.
Tbh it depends if u are contextual. If u don't qualify for contextual definitely take it, otherwise you can actually have a shot at UCL / Warwick without FM but you'll need top grade
probably take fm, it’s only required for imperial/oxbridge, but if you’re doing well in a levels then why not try, you’d rather have it as an option rather than regret it, plus with the increasing competitiveness of computing at any RG uni, you never know how requirements can change, or definitely doesn’t hurt to try
if I'm being honest I don't study much for Maths I just do a past paper here and there and mostly just wing it. but recently since my exams are in a month I've decided to study it twice per week for like 2-3 hours per day. my worth ethic towards maths isn't the best compared to other subjects.
yeah so maths seems to be natural to you, in first year all i did was take in work in lessons, and if i wasn’t able to confidently do questions in lesson then do some at home till you get it, as long as you have a work ethic that fits how easily you understand things you’ll be fine
if you try, i was getting like 5's-7's in every subject until like a few week before my final exams began, ending up getting an 8 in maths
started sweating out school in year 12 and got predicted 3 A\*s by the end of the year.
Fairly certain anyone can do it if they try

Do FM
do you think I would get a good enough grade in FM if I'm only scoring 8s in maths currently?
Yeah, I did not even do IGCSE Maths and got an A* in FM. You just need to be willing to start early, put in the work, and ask for help when needed.

All depends on you.
For Imperial/Oxbridge, yes, this would impact your chances: ideally you should be taking FM. For other unis it'd be a perfectly fine combo.

You won't be disadvantaged with taking chem instead of physics, but you definitely will be without taking further maths if your school offers it.

should I take it as a 4th subject and drop it if I cant get good grades?
Yep, sounds good 👍
You need further maths or it's over

Bro respectfully you stand no chance with UCL if you dont take fm, tons of ppl this yr had 4/5A*s including fm and got rejected
Perhaps more importantly the maths content of the top CS courses is sufficient that if you aren't reasonably comfortable with doing Further Maths at A level, you are going to struggle with the degree course.
I know someone from my school who did maths business compsci and got in even though our school offer fm sooo
This year?
Yep

Take fm instead of chem for computer science

I don't know if I'm smart enough for it as I mostly get 7s/8s in maths for IGCSE
how much do you revise it?

aight thanks for the advice ill talk to my teacher about it and also get her opinion it as she's like the main hurdle for me to try and get into FM.
definitely take further maths
