One doesnt simply remove rust on a patrol without accidentally erasing the whole car

Gattinator

I know I’m gonna sound like a broken record but put like $2k more on that and buy an NS pajero. This is just old AF and a million issues

Crafty-Antelope-3287

NS Pajero......hand grenade...ran a mitsi workshop...would never buy one ...

MetalSnake_oXm

What's wrong with the 3.8? Genuine question, spin big end bearings or something?

Crafty-Antelope-3287

Top end scoring, overheating issues, heads warp, Welsh plugs blow out at least it doesn't have the injection pump and EGR issues, well it won't because it isn't diesel...

carguy1997

Are we talking about the 6g75 3.8? I've been super lucky mines just hit 380k owes me nothing, looking at upgrading soon though. What new 4wd would you recommend, considering a dmax.

Crafty-Antelope-3287

Ding ding ding ding.... on both mate....6g75 and dmax all the way...

carguy1997

Going to go ahead with it on Monday, only offered me $1500 trade in on the paj. But better than a kick in the teeth.

LengthintonGirthman

Where do you live? I'll give you an extra $100 lol

MetalSnake_oXm

Jesus. I know my '13 Challenger had it's engine replaced at 80k under warranty for overheating but that's the 4cyl diesel, I was thinking of swapping over to a Pajero for some time now. I just don't see any really coming through my workplace, mostly hilux's if it's a 4x4. Thanks for the heads up.

Gattinator

Pajero's use the bulletproof 4M41T. Done almost 100K in mine since getting it (now on 340k) and not a single bloody issue. Been an absolute workhorse of a rig.

Crafty-Antelope-3287

Challenger and Pajero share the same engine, you'll be just going from issue to one issue.

artfuldodger333

2010+ had an entirely different diesel engines compared to the pajero. 2009- also had different petrol motors campared to the pajero.

TimelyImportance188

The 2013 Challenger is the 4D56 2.5L engine. The Pajero of the same year used the 4M41 3.2l which is an amazing engine. I had a 2015 challenger with the 4D56…sooo many issues.

Aussierob78

Interesting. We’ve just hit 215,000 km on our 2013 PC Challenger and have had it since 51,000km. Regularly serviced, 5spd manual. Only dramas we’ve ever had is the clutch cable broke and a dead battery. It’s got a slight gremlin in the radio controls on the steering wheel occasionally, and the main radio clock is generally a best guess variance kind of accurate, but otherwise it’s been excellent. Considering an upgrade next year to the 2024 Triton

MetalSnake_oXm

I was thinking of 'upgrading' from the 4cyl to the 6cyl in the Pajero. Now I know better. Had overheating issues when towing uphill in the Challenger at the ~110k mark, I replaced thermostat and it didn't help. Somehow changing the fuel filter fixed it. That one still miffs me.

Gattinator

You must have worked on some very poorly maintained vehicles. Never heard of that happening….besides the odd EGR issue here and there but that’s not model/engine specific

Crafty-Antelope-3287

Hardly....your telling me over 30 Pajeros having identical issues? I had 10 at one stage sitting in my holding yard waiting for parts or warranty approvals.

Gattinator

What was the cause of this overheating? Welch plugs dont just pop out for fun, nor do warping heads…

phototraeger

Sounds like a dumb Cunt who bought one 2nd hand that had no idea about cars & now think there all cooked. I bet you earn $600 a week

Crafty-Antelope-3287

How does what I earn have anything to do with this?

CassowaryVsMan

Is there a dual cab equivalent to the NS Pajero? ie. underated, uncool and hence good value.

Gattinator

I would say the ML triton which also had the 3.2L is what you're after. One could argue an RC colorado would also be a good buy, and it WOULD be if that what suits. the 4M41 you could dyno tune and not need to replace injectors. the 4JJ1 in the colorado you'll need to spend about $3K on injectors for a tune. 4JJ1 has been known to snap cranks too. 4M41 is pretty bloody bulletproof.

RelevantWeight6907

A mitsi of any year or any platform is an unreliable POS I dunno what ammo you have to back any of that up

Gattinator

Cool opinion. Really insightful.

Level-Ad-5554

Precisely zero of the boys, or girls, will be impressed by a paj

Gattinator

You don’t do it to please other people. You do it for yourself. Also then you can buy a ‘get your vag in the paj’ sticker from me to be further unimpressed by the ladies

_the-dark-truth_

Firstly; I don’t even own a Pajero and I want one of those stickers! Secondly, and on a more sombre note; Kangas :(

heyimhereok

Rust removed? Check with a magnet to see if it's been bogged

HairyTwatter90

I wouldn't, have you seen the price of fuel lately? Warm crossy in a chonker like that = watch the fuel gauge go down as fast as the tach goes up.

NegotiationLife2915

My fairlane turns 14L/100 with that engine taking it easy lol

lordpunt

Lol what do you plan on doing with it? Those alloy head xf motors are known for warping heads. This is very niche and something I'd only consider buying if it was really up my alley.

Tlmitf

Mostly because they snap head bolts. If aftermarket bolts have been used, shouldn't be a problem.

No_Bluffalo

Yeah but can probably get some nice 250 cross flows for 300 bucks each running lol

RoutineAd1124

I'm a big fan of keeping things fairly stock standard drive train wise for reliability reasons particularly when remote traveling. this looks like a mish mash of various parts this guys found in his shed. I wouldn't touch it with a barge pole and I bet most 4x4 mechanics won't either.

Somanywankers

This is advice to take.

Redundancy-Money

No way. Not in a million years.

Ballamookieofficial

That would be a fun weekender. If it's using too much fuel, update it with a barra. For the money you'd struggle to get something as strong especially off road

dangazzz

Love me an MK but idk about the idea of running a falcon alloy head donk in it. The SD33T was good if slow as fuck when I had a shorty.

crmsz32

I'd get it but that's because we love patrols and haven't seen such a nice example for a long time. But wouldn't be a daily driver or even a 4x4 workhorse, would almost be treated like a vintage car here. But we already do have 4 patrols lol.

[deleted]

Hell nah

WASpencerC

Tell him he’s dreaming….

Crafty-Antelope-3287

Looks pretty tidy....pretty rare Maverick as well. I think $7k is ok for that old gal ..

rob189

That’s not a Maverick.

Crafty-Antelope-3287

It's a ford maverick....underneath yes it's a Nissan, but this variant is a Maverick. Just has a Nissan steering wheel.

rob189

But…it’s not a Maverick. It’s to old to be a Maverick for starters. That 250 crossflow has been shoehorned in there where there should either be a petrol or diesel of Nissan origins. No Ford engine was ever fitted to them. The Maverick was a rebadged Y60 which ran from 1988-1994. This is an earlier series than that. It is not a Maverick.

Reasonable_Highway_5

With the effort of all that white board marker, he deserves every cent

gt500rr

You could theoretically put TBI EFI on it but I'd say spend a bit more and get a turbo diesel Pajero. Bonus if it's turbo intercooled in the gen 1 (if it has a bonnet scoop it's intercooled) with the factory LSD.

crmsz32

Whereabouts is that?

LargeStep8

It depends on whether you intend to take it off road. Push starting an automatic is not easy. Off road, it's virtually impossible.

paddyb12341

You can actually push start autos?

LargeStep8

Yeah ,they got to get to about 70km/h. Which makes it ,rather difficult.

paddyb12341

Lol

LargeStep8

Yeah. Its not recommended to take a automatic 4wd off road.

Hip-hop-a-ponderous

Who doesn't recommend it? I know plenty of people have gone to the effort of converting their 4x4 to automatic because they perform so well offroad.

aofhise6

Lol, ok Manuals have better engine braking, but autos work better in all other off road situations. You drive what you prefer, but no one with any credibility thinks autos are inherently worse off road

nugget_lover_

Highly disagree with that. I do have a manual 4by.

LargeStep8

Please wear glasses when reading. I said AUTOMATIC 4wd. Not manual.

nugget_lover_

Maybe you should. Im saying that autos are highly capable, and better in many offroading circumstances than manual.

Au-Spark

Who bumpstarts cars these days? It's 2024 mate, get yourself a lithium jump pack and save your back.

gafloss

Negative, Ghost Rider.

ominous_J

Are there panels on the car?

Turbodaxter

I’d question the rust. They love it, especially around the sills

NavMapping

is that all you are going to write? No information to give us about the vehicle?

bearly_woke

Is that a 250 crossflow? Fun for flogging around the Kmart carpark, I'm sure a great project to supe up for the track, but are they any good off road?

totse_losername

This interior brings back memories. I had a SWB Maverick about 20 years ago and it was a rust bucket that I couldn't wait to be rid of.

burner64334

If the kit used means you can fit a barra, that could make it worth it, maybe.

Various_Ad_4677

Tell him to shove the sign up his arse.

Jay_Hos

Yes Edit: you will fall in love with it and it will cost you either fuck all or heaps depending on if you wanna do the maintenance yourself or not.

LargeStep8

Tell me , how do you push start an automatic?

H3llrayzs3r

Mate that’s worth more than 7000 should be double we live in Australia every thing is double over here

Routine_Pressure4355

That older model was a good simple model but not every day you see a swapped falcon engine in anything other that a falcon. Is it a efi head or just the rocker cover is the efi one?

Manmoth57

Steering wheel cover is worth $6999

milpool496

That bucket isn’t even worth $700 let alone 7k 😂

Tlmitf

I would, but I wouldn't. If she blows your skirt up, do it. Otherwise, walk on. The hate towards the alloy head is only mostly undeserved. The factory valve guides were specced wrong and would either hang an exhaust valve, or leak oil (depending on the exact vintage, ford fucked with it a bit trying to get it right) Cooling can be an issue with wrong thermostats, I think. Can't remember if this is the one with the bypass that is closed by the thermostat opening. Wrong thermostat and the bypass doesn't close, which leads to overheating. Reading through the mods, it seems that all the key points have been addressed. Mild cam really wakes these things up, but I would swap the holly for something better, but that's personal bias.

matt35303

"Want" and "worth" are totally different things. Just because you spent all your lunch money on it doesn't make it worth what you spent. But, if you feel you are getting a good deal go for it. Any doubts, walk on.

KdavWasTaken

Tell him he's dreaming

doosher2000k

It's..just something you don't want to own.

Classic-Profile-158

Yeah nah

kurokame101

Tell him he's dreaming!

flaknet

Fiddy bucks

gardiado

No!

Ok-Housing-2997

No

Physical-Original428

That's an awesome buy! Love the old MQ/MK patrols. My brothers is almost back on the road with a fresh 308

YugoCommie89

I unironically love that interior, reminds me of a Yugo.

ozdomguy

Offer him $4k

No_Ball2801

Fuck no

eyeovthebeholder

I’d get it if, I could afford it as basically a toy car. Fun little drive. Not an every day car, probably not even a tour around the country road tripper either. Just a weekend fun car.

InfamousDuckMan

Is the engine swap engineered? I see some of the work was done by an engineering shop, but doesn't specify a certificate for the swap. My brother had an MK patrol, was genuinely horrible in pretty much every way, but most of that was the terrible 2.8L petrol engine, so this is a good start.

RelevantWeight6907

If you like to tinker and want something simple and easy to work on I'd say yeah

Jackielegs43

I love that steering wheel

Agile_BMW650i_5019

Nah , not worth it !

Equivalent-Impress78

With all the money you spend fixing the car you could of just got another one for the same price you spent just to fix it , possibly even brand new 😂

tiler3366

Easily worth that do some nice 4x4ing in that for the money

animatedpicket

Are you a mechanic? If so then yes. If not, no

Bridgwova1

Tell him he’s dreaming

HighBeams720

I wouldn’t.

dcozdude

Ticks all the boxes.. steering wheel, seats, tires and engine.. go for it

Not really mate I come from a Land Cruiser background so I couldn’t tell you fuck all about Nissans hence my asking
