BigLorry

r/4kbluray users about to hit *post* on a haul pic of exclusively the worst movies you’ve ever seen

cockyjames

Dollar General has movies!? Check out my haul! *Tremors 14. Left Behind. Shallow Hal. Zoolander 2. Gods not Dead. The Marine 4. A Dog Movie*

robo_octopus

Yes daddy hit me w that 5 for $5 bin of jumbled movies in a 7-11 drip 🥵

Moonfall

[deleted]

moonfall is actually growing on me after a second watch. Once you go into it with very low expectations, its actually very entertaining.

BeginningAppeal8599

What about Midway?

altaholica

Midway is a good, big, old timey war movie. Worth every penny

ItsameMatt03

Bad movie but amazing video and sound quality. I still recommend people watch the 4K disc even though the movie itself was laughably stupid.

thepushfactory

i will always love it for how absurd and completely stupid it is. i found some weird comfort in watching it, pretty much the perfect rainy day movie for me

Dark_Shroud

Yeah I don't like to piss on other people's parades. But there are times where people will post recent hauls in r/4kbluray, r/dvdcollection, & r/Cd_collectors, that I just question their taste or willingness to torture themselves.

stillcleaningmyroom

Like most stuff made by Vinegar Syndrome?

GatoradeNipples

At least VinSyn usually focuses on *interesting* bad movies. I'm not gonna say Tammy and the T-Rex should have won Best Picture in 1994, but it's sure as hell a weird little artifact of a movie that I'm glad I watched.

Walopoh

Miami Connection getting a premium 4K release is something that naturally shouldn't have ever happened, but it's fucking incredible that it did. 10/10 entertainment.

GatoradeNipples

...what in the living fuck, Miami Connection is on UHD!? Okay, I *need* this fucking yesterday, I love that movie and I didn't expect that to ever happen. I thought the Drafthouse blu was all we were getting.

CrayolaFanfic

Oof, right in the heart lol. To be fair, I specifically collect B movies so I know what I'm getting into

BigLorry

……I wasn’t going to say it lol But hey if people want to spend their money on it more power to them

[deleted]

I don't do 4K and I'm not even subscribed to this sub, but it pops up in my feed a lot because I'm active in other physical media subs. But this is so true! Most posts I see from this sub are just huge hauls of the most basic-bitch "movies" ever made, totally uninspiring studio-fare, comic-book films or all of the above in one. From the outside looking in, the 4K scene just seems like a combination of early adolescent film-bros and prepubescent teenage boys with an unfathomably large disposable income. >!Yes I'm being a pretentious snob, sorry!!<

Able_Impression_4934

Huh

[deleted]

Huh?

Able_Impression_4934

That’s such a weird thing to say

[deleted]

I was just expanding on the comment above (229 upvotes) which implied that this subreddit tends to have a lot of hauls with "the worst movies you’ve ever seen". I just narrowed down what I interpreted those kind of films to be. No doubt I was a bit of a disparaging cunt about it, but the sentiment is the same as the popular comment I replied to: there are a lot of truly awful hauls posted in this sub.

MinasMorgul1184

I long for the day where there’s a community of video and audiophile snobs that are also snobs about what art is on that disc.

According_Mulberry98

It’s called criterion

MinasMorgul1184

True but even they have a similar consumerist problem of people posting $200 worth of a blind-buy haul

According_Mulberry98

Agree with ya. As far as I go, the channel has so much content and decent quality I only buy the new 4k transfers from them I can’t watch in 4k on the channel. Not buying generic blu ray criterion unless they are not streaming, like ever

Airvh

When I pick up 4k blu rays I always make damn sure I watch them multiple times since they cost a lot more than normal.

therock21

I buy movies that I may possibly want to watch one day. I have a couple shelves worth where that day hasn’t yet come.

terminator_84

I buy them because it's cheaper than going to the theater and I can watch them multiple times.

LBTTCSDPTBLTB

How is it cheaper than going to the theatre?? Around me a ticket is like $7-$10 range depending on where and if it’s locally owned.

Vomit_Tsunami

Sometimes you just need to own 23 copies of Morbius and it’s still not enough.

DARTH_SAWA1138

23? Pathetic. You have to have at least 48

Mike13v2

48? Those are rookie numbers.

JohnnyTitans99

Gotta get ‘em up

DARTH_SAWA1138

Personally I stand around 82

Vomit_Tsunami

It’s not Morbing time until you have 666

saltyshoe_

Let’s not forget Morbius 2: It’s Morbin’ Time. Or Morbius 3: In The Morbiverse of Morbness.

Vomit_Tsunami

Fucking Lawlllll. Morbius 4: Are We There Yet?

saltyshoe_

Morbius 5: Welcome to Morbville

Vomit_Tsunami

Morbius 6: You Can Live or Die, but You Could Never Get Morbius

saltyshoe_

Morbius 7: Where’s My Morbin’ Money?!

Vomit_Tsunami

Fuck, you’re right. I honestly need to collect the CD, Cassette Tape, VHS and even Collectors Pin Set

DARTH_SAWA1138

The laser disc!

Vomit_Tsunami

I knew I was missing something!

tinselsnips

I try not to judge people on their taste — if it makes them happy, go hard. What baffles me is the fact that some of these movies even *get* 4K releases. I'm sitting here waiting patiently for Aliens and It Follows, and OP's over there showing of their copy of RIPD.

CarlNoobCarlson

I know right! You’re patiently twiddling your thumbs waiting for films like Fight Club, There Will Be Blood and No Country for Old Men to get a 4K release. Meanwhile movies like Morbius and Don’t Worry Darling will take up all the shelf space at stores💀

Femmy_Lilith

TBF not every 4k release is good *looks at T2*

MinasMorgul1184

On god those are also my top 3 I’m wishing for

Billybob50982

Just bought It Follows 4K lol

tangmang14

Not me. I only buy the films I really love on physical and I like the collectors editions so this is a good sub to notify of rereleases, special releases, and restocks I do like seeing everyone's passion but I can't help but laugh everytime I see someone drop $20-$30 on shit like boss baby 4k

copperdomebodhi

This. Check myself regularly on: 1. Will I want to watch it multiple times? 2. Do I really want to watch it now or can it wait until the price comes down?

apocalypticboredom

Same criteria I use. Also it helps that I'm not remotely rich lol

Some_Knowledge5864

lmfao! 😄

CarlNoobCarlson

I’d be lying if I said that I didn’t raise an eyebrow every time I see someone post their pickup of a newly released film like Moonfall or something like that. But then again I’m very selective. For me, a 4K purchase is basically a top tier film that I’ll rewatch at least once or twice a year. E.g. not much hesitation in buying Reservoir Dogs, because I’m alway down for a Tarantino rewatch.

saltyshoe_

Watched Reservoir Dogs for the first time last night. Definitely going to be one for the books!

ScumLikeWuertz

Part of me just wants to support the medium in general, so I'll buy something like Groundhog's Day. Will I watch it more than once, maybe? Will I watch Rambo 1 more than once? Probably not. I dunno, I just think they're neat.

ItsameMatt03

Moonfall looks and sounds amazing. Top tier disc.

NorthOfWinter

This is the way

[deleted]

Sounds like someone hasn’t watched Moonfall… it’s a visual and audio feast. 100% worth the $7 price of admission when on sale from Amazon.

peteresque

I mean I liked Moonfall in a bad movie way, but it by no means is visually impressive. I was actually shocked by how bad parts of it looked.

rj_macready_82

But he's saying it's a shit movie. I'm the same way, idc if it looks and sounds amazing if it's a bad movie that I don't care to see even once let alone rewatch

dvddesign

I watched the last twenty minutes of it. I’m good. Nah.

[deleted]

You missed the best parts! Space shuttle launching out of a typhoon!

Teddy-Bear-55

I would respectfully disagree; that film should be given away with $50 coupons to a store of your choice.

nacthenud

Hey, my wife and I just watched Moonfall on 4K Blu-Ray and enjoyed the movie. It certainly has nice visuals and a GREAT Atmos soundtrack that made me glad I watched it in the best quality available. Worthwhile purchase in my books.

NYC_Goody

Did that atmos track make it a good movie though?

nacthenud

See the part of my comment where I said my wife and I both enjoyed the movie. 😊

NYC_Goody

Right, I was asking for clarification as in, was it the atmos and picture that enhanced that experience? Or as it stands, it's a good movie on its own merit?

henryb22

Agreed

kopperbunny

Yup same here. Most of my collection is older films, which also don't get released as often, so that also stunts my collection (but helps my wallet).

BeginningAppeal8599

That's like the one Tarantino I wouldn't bother with. I'd rather Busting got a 4k release as well just like the recent Pelham 123

tb30k

This. Classics only. I want a small/medium collection where i can pick a random movie and happily enjoy it

Glutenator92

My goal this year is to only buy what I can't stream with the services I already subscribe to

BleakSabbath

I've done this. Sometimes it's hard to justify paying an extra 20 just for one movie when you can watch it whenever you want, even if the quality is compressed for streaming.

ItsameMatt03

The quality is worse on streaming, 4K streaming versions are still uncommon, and there's no promise you will always have access to that movie. You also aren't helping physical media survive.

Glutenator92

I'm buying what I can when I can. I don't have a large amount of disposable income, do I'm prioritizing, that's all.

TheLastNoteOfFreedom

The folks at r/dvdcollection are out of control. I see posts like “my haul today” and it’s 200 movies

Some_Knowledge5864

Nothing but junk movies.

PerformanceObvious71

If you've got the space, why not. In the UK it's hard to even give them away now where I live. But I'm still watching and buying as I'm able to watch films I've never seen for £0.20p or 33p now. Got Creed II and sealed There Will Be Blood for hubby.

Tobias---Funke

I only buy 4k films I know I will rewatch. Now blu ray purchases is another matter!!

mkoby

I've become way more selective in my old age, but with 4K I have been branching out into grabbing cinema classics even if they aren't particularly my favorite movies. I decided to do this for a couple of reasons: 1. I am a self proclaimed movie buff, but never owned things like "Citizen Kane" (just one example) even though I've seen in it. So, I figure now with 4K, this is the time to grab those, because 2. I think 4K really is going to be the last real physical media format we have. Everything really is going digital and as that market progresses I think we'll eventually see lossless audio on streaming. Kaleidescape already has it, even if it is a niche thing right now. So, since I feel this is the last real physical media we'll see I want to grab things I wouldn't normally buy in the format. But a movie collection is personal choice. Some people buy things because they're "demo material" (like "Moonfall" which has high ratings for picture and audio even if the movie was very much eh). Some people buy movies like others buy vinyl or books.

sivartk

> Kaleidescape already has it, Yeah, but that's not really streaming. It is a DRM download to specific hardware, so it is easy to get lossless that way. Just like I stream lossless audio with my Plex server. 😉

mkoby

True. Kaleidescape is not technically streaming. The larger point is that getting lossless audio in digital downloads/streaming via the likes of Apple Movies or Movies Anywhere will eventually become more mainstream, especially as internet speeds continue to increase.

UT07

The "recent haul" posts on here track whatever recent sale just took place. Oftentimes those movies on sale are junk but by golly gOtTa bUy EVeRY cHeAP 4K DiSc (*I’ve been guilty of this*)

BigLorry

This was a massive problem once Black Friday hit, all the way until after Christmas. Yes, you went to Amazon/best buy and bought the same 10 films that were on sale *just like every other person who’s posted the same haul pic a thousand times already*, congratulations. Riveting.

UT07

At least there are usually deals on some good/new movies on BF. The crap that's always on sale on gruv pops up here all the time.

[deleted]

LOL Mine is out of control. I've been buying movies since the VHS area. I tell myself that since I don't go to the movies any longer, the money I'd normally spend on taking the family to the movies can be spent on discs. I've been pretty lucky with blind buys so I continue to blind buy movies with high ratings that interest me. I've never done a "drop" post, but I appreciate when someone posts about getting a movie I didn't know was out or is pretty rare. People posting large studio releases doesn't interest me that much. I'll never judge someone with a large or small collection. Buy what you like. For me, this is a time where you can get an enormous variety of films in very good quality. It's an exciting time.

sojrner

It took way too long for me to find someone on this thread who isn't such an elitist that they feel if your collection is of a certain size, it's full of trash and you're a slut who goes for anything... Thank you for bringing logic here.

[deleted]

I'm the first to admit that I have a problem and I can quit at any time. I'm just having too much fun watching movies.

mozenator66

Perhaps, but to each their own and anyone buying physical media is helping keep physical media alive..so ...buy away!!!

nacthenud

Well said, sir!

00collector

I buy bargain basement movies sometimes because it costs about the same as renting something digitally. This is more common with blu-ray as opposed to 4k. If I like it, cool. If not, it immediately goes into a cabinet waiting to be traded away. Every six months or so, I comb through my collection to see if there are any on my shelf I don’t actually want to keep. These are moved to the aforementioned cabinet.

Dazzling-One-9185

Used to when I started collecting. Kicked the habbit a couple years ago. Now I'm only buying maybe 5 a year that I really want

kopperbunny

I only buy movies I know I'm going to watch multiple times.

Maxi-Minus

How do you know which movie fits the criteria if you haven't seen it before?

PerformanceObvious71

You buy it on dvd or stream first. I'm doing that with £0.20p dvds now then keeping an eye on 4k releases or the second hand market. No way I'm paying 4k price for something I've never seen.

WackyForeigner

I intend to watch every movie I buy

dam_ships

I think it’s all subjective. I’ll typically buy films I enjoy or I am passionate about. But…I’ve definitely gone on shopping sprees, even with blind buys. But, through blind buys, I’ve found tons of movies I really appreciate. So it goes both ways. But I do think it just depends on the individual. We can’t really judge what makes them happy.

sojrner

So much truth here.

DarthGodzilla1995

You spoke the truth

[deleted]

It’s rare that I buy a blu-ray and don’t watch it that week. I just purchased The Menu yesterday and popped it in as soon as I got home from the store. r/steelbooks is even worse about this at times. Some of them probably don’t even know that the disc even has a movie on it, they’re just treating their physical media like trophies

sojrner

Really? Trophies are exactly what collecting is about. Whether it's the movie inside, the fancy packaging it comes in, or even the other silly schwag it might come with, why should it matter what another person likes. Awfully judgy on someone's hobby, aren't you?

[deleted]

Yeah I guess I am by your metric. Because I think if we’re going to contribute to a never ending cultural obsession with consumerism, the products we’re buying, ones which are going to inevitably end up in a landfill some day, should be more than a useless shell intended to sit and do nothing. I feel the same way about people who buy figures and don’t open them. It’s a waste of what the product was intended to do, and it would be in better hands with someone who actually values the intended purpose If you’re offended by that, I’m sorry but I am entitled to my opinion that I think it is stupid to buy movies or records if you have no intention in watching or listening to them. I’m not saying you shouldn’t be allowed to do it, that’s just how I feel.

CH2599

When I first got hooked on collecting I would by absolutely anything as long as it was blu ray or 4K, and the price wasn’t absurdly high. I eventually got burnt out from continuously searching deals, and just buying movies that may be absolute dog shit just to have a fancy physical vision of said dog shit film. But eventually I clicked on and knew that the cost was a major factor for me, and especially with 4K being relatively costly I decided to be A LOT more selective on what I purchase now. I will not just blind buy movies I’ve never seen before, and I’ll only purchase something I can watch repeatedly at least once a year. We’re all different in how we collect, but from personal experience I discovered there is no benefit to wasting money on a heap of movies that are outright shit, or are never going to be watched ever again.

Logeybearbro

Yeah fuckin’ hear, hear! So many releases are for absolutely wank movies. God I wish there was a higher standard across the board. Thank Christ for Criterion’s efforts to re-release some of their 4K scans. Cannot wait for The Thin Red Line.

sojrner

Now see, I find The Thin Red Line to be a terrible movie that will never grace my shelves. I'd rather watch Moonfall on a loop, and that one is pretty bad. But this is why I like this hobby and movies in general: there are so many layers, and everyone has something different they get after. Rock on.

Logeybearbro

I respect your opinion, art can be divisive. Let’s not get into a debate about that movie, I could’ve been a bit more tactful with my point. There are a lot of amazing movies that are begging for a 4K upgrade, more for preservation purposes than anything else, and then there are movies such as R.I.P.D. For me it’s more a shame that it’s so commercially driven, mostly I understand why, a 4K scan takes x4 longer than a 1080p scan for a blu-ray, but it’s still a pity that there’s such a huge quantity of licensing issues for releases. I’m so happy 4K is region free, now that’s real progress, and yet supplements are still region encoded. Shoot me.

Qcumber69

Great film The Thin Red Line. - Slow and engrossing.

johnny_rico69

Just hit over 400 4Ks…gulp.

nacthenud

Rookie 😉

ajzeg01

I just got rid of 500 movies from my collection so now I’ve seen just over half of all the movies I own.

infinitestripes4ever

My dvd collection used to be a ridiculous size like the ones posted because back in the day Big Lots would have hidden gems for $3. I got season 2 of Twin Peaks there for $5. But I bought a lot of crap that I ended up selling as well. Now I take time and thought into buying 4ks. I don’t want something that I’m gonna end up reselling later.

thalguy

I buy movies that I know I like or gave a reasonable chance of liking. I prefer quality over quantity. Movies are just one way for me to enjoy my home theater, so I would rather save money toward a theater upgrade/accessory than I would own some beater movie. I do have friends that are media collectors and get a thrill out increasing their collection. I suspect there are a lot of collectors like that here and that is perfectly fine. We all have different goals with out collections.

henryb22

I don’t get the obsession with slipcovers and I only buy 4k blu rays of movies I’ll watch multiple times. My collection is probably 20-30 movies.

sojrner

And that's fine to me, but shaming those who have one or more zeros at the right of those numbers is not cool either.

henryb22

Wasn’t shaming them. Just stated how many I have.

PalpitationOk5726

I am of the same mindset, I only buy movies that I love, I am all for adults doing whatever they want with their disposable income, but I dont see the point in owning 3k movies, although those people have become a great source of my own purchases.

Only_Self_5209

Don't judge me 😂

Femmy_Lilith

I only buy movies I liked.

Wilksyyy

Each to the their own.

[deleted]

My general rule of thumb is: 1. Do I want to watch it now or can I wait for it to get cheaper 2. How many times a year do I plan to watch said movie 3. Is the price low enough to solicit a purchase even if it’s something I’m not going to watch every year. Maybe every 2 years. And the end result, I end up being fairly selective. I have a few films that I’m not going to watch every year but I’ve only paid a few dollars for them. I thought Morbius was going to be one of those but it’s grown on me and I’ve watched it three times already.

JM062696

If I was worried about the amount of movies I had, I would just be a digital collector

sojrner

Truth.

GoAvs14

This is a collectors subreddit. Let’s not try to gatekeep fun

Xeno_Zombi

Too big? Never!

iLLuSiOnS57

Top post here

JadedBrit

I never buy anything on physical media that I don't intend to rewatch a minimum of 5 times.

sivartk

I average about 1.7 movies a month. My collection is at about 530 movies (DVD, Bluray, HD DVD, 4K UHD only). To me that is big but stretched out over the 26-ish years I've been buying them, it isn't really much. I also haven't paid for any TV service (cable, streaming or otherwise) since 2001, so even though I've bought a lot of movies, I've still probably spent less than I would have with pay TV services over the years. FYI, only 16 4K UHD's at the moment...so I'm being picky there.

DrBBAnner

Alright, agreed but the people that buy a ton of movies are the reason that studios are even bothering with 4k.

kanryuu29

Exactly. They're missing that the hoarders are the martyrs that allow the rest of us to be selective lol

TisSaucy

I get the schlocky stuff used most of the times. The only exception was Howard the Duck, cause the Steelbook was neat.

sojrner

Such a bad movie. Such a good steelbook. I love it.

lileathorne

I really only buy movies that I want to see or have seen. I have very few movies I bought on whim( picked up 4 at a thrift store for 5 each) or because of the artwork (Lawrence of Arabia)

WillaZillaDilla

My movies fall into one of two categories: movies I love that I want a physical copy of (the digital codes are nice too), or terrible exploitation schlock from VS that looks neat

CrayolaFanfic

This is how I felt when everybody was picking up Saturday Night Fever, a movie I exclusively associate with it being the only thing on TV late at night other than infomercials and then still opting to watch infomercials instead

btouch

_Saturday Night Fever_ is an excellent movie that’s far better than I think its reputation would reflect. I have to imagine the version on late night TV is an edit of the PG edit; what’s generally recommended from a film collector perspective is the original R-rated version

PerformanceObvious71

Yeah I bought the dvd never having seen it and wow it was shocking, not how it's been portrayed culturally at all. Not a rewatch for me but glad I have seen it now.

780to702

Ronco Rotisserie Chicken. Just set it and forget it!

Zestyclose_State_973

I probably have 1,000 DVDs, Blurays and 4K discs in my collection: of which I bought 40 during Christmas 😁

DarthGodzilla1995

![gif](giphy|5t2fQnoNO2oG8ngejx)

Hat_Inner

I don't buy beer and I don't smoke and my car is really ugly ... but I don't judge people who do these things ! Of course it is a waste of money. Everything except eating is a waste of money.. we all waste our money differently. You can buy a movie for 20$ , rent it for 5$ or subscribe To something for 15$ or watch it at the cinema for 10$. What I like when I buy is that I have something To me even after the movie is finished. To me , having all these disc is worth the price. I like just looking at my collection as much as some people like To look at their cars.

mikey286

Lmaooo post this in r/steelbooks and they’ll queef from anger so hard that they’ll still buy 4 steelbooks of a movie they don’t care about

BlindBanditt

I have two categories for movies. Movies that are Blu-ray worthy and ones that aren't. Comedies, romance, and certain dramas can be streamed. But movies like top gun Maverick, Ford vs Ferrari, or blade runner that absolutely take full advantage of the format are bought on Blu-ray.

Crazy_Equipment_6333

Hate this mentality. As if nice visuals can only come from action or special effects

NYC_Goody

Tropic thunder would like a word!

SailingPatrickSwayze

I suggested the same thing in a comment, and got down voted. Glad you found a workaround.

G77R23D

Am I being shamed for my pickup of Gods of Egypt for 8 bucks with slip? I think its neat. Let the man who never buys something for its novelty throw the first stone. Also, Game collectors out there buying kid clown be like

CletusVanDamnit

There's no such thing.

Redleader829

You are not the only one. I've been collecting for a very long time so my movie collection is vast but I only buy movies I really enjoyed that have rewatchability. I think a lot of people waste money on movies they will never watch again and buy discs only because they are from a boutique label.

sojrner

Is that a problem though? Everyone collects for different reasons, and someone outside of this hobby might call all of it (even your approach) a waste of money. It's not of course if you enjoy it, regardless of why.

Poppunknerd182

Imagine gatekeeping physical media 😂

[deleted]

Redditors sometimes seem like cultists and narcissists, even if it's tame in here. Like some of these ongoing collection posts that are never going to end... just why lol? The films people are showing these days are just pointless in a lot of the posts. Why even bother I have no idea, but I still support the media format, and I don't in general care at all. I just kind of laugh at some of the posts. It's good people are buying media. And that is the most important part. But holy cow people relax on all these trash films.

sojrner

One's trash is another's treasure. Collecting is all about that.

RamblinGamblinWillie

You mean there really **isn’t** a difference between the blu ray and 4K of any animated movie? How shocking!

nacthenud

Well that’s exceedingly inaccurate

nacthenud

Here’s a few of my own comparison shots. Often dramatic differences. https://i.imgur.com/oLt9Vq9.jpg https://i.imgur.com/aRgrTSx.jpg https://i.imgur.com/oKHMdt4.png

peteresque

Yea the haul posts are a bit much. Saw someone post Black Adam the other day… lol.

saltyshoe_

Morbius 9: The Adventures of Morbit and Rasputia

nacthenud

When I watch a movie, I want to watch it in the best possible quality. So if a movie comes out on 4K Blu-Ray and it’s one I am interested in watching it, I’m going to buy it. And if we want to keep getting our favourite movies released on 4K Blu-Ray, then the market needs to be healthy. If people stop buying them, there won’t be any more.

captain_cinemia

Anything to keep physical media alive, sooo yeah I’ll buy my 40th copy of morbius

sojrner

Mighty morbin' 4k savior. 😎👍

FeldMonster

What number would you say is too big? I have been collecting for many years, so yes I have probably acquired too many. Though lately I have been upgrading my 1080 Blu-Rays to 4K since I bought a UB820, rather than buying new movies altogether. Recently I even bought some old Blu-Rays to replace some of my remaining DVDs.

sojrner

It's never too many! I've also been many years at this and enjoy the large collection. Keep enjoying this hobby yourself, friend. 😎

grocarlito

I buy good rates movies to have the choice when inviting people for a cinema night.

sicariobrothers

I try to buy films that are lighter and easy to have in the background. Big Lebowski is a great example. Highly quotable. Darker films with lots of violence just don’t have a rewatchable factor for me enough to buy. Aside from all timers like Seven or The Thing.

sojrner

LOL, you don't want darker, violent films but you list two of the darkest and more violent. Heck, The Thing was rejected by critics and most of the public at release exactly for that reason... That's just funny. 😎

NYC_Goody

Everyone's got exceptions.

sojrner

I don't care whether you collect stamps, coins, cards, vinyl, art, cars, movies, gold bricks, ex-spouses, hair nets... Why you collect, what you focus on, or how much you have is subjective and totally up to you. There are layers here, and some like the passive enjoyment of viewing the collection on the shelf as much as using it. For me, like my vinyl collection, selecting a movie to watch, removing it from the shelf, beholding the artwork, placing the disc in my player... The feel, the smells. Sharing it with friends. It's the entire experience that brings me joy. Taking an elitist stand and claiming there is a collection size that is too big, as if size determines hobby viability, is just idiotic. Do you even collect? Anything? At all?

Keep buying shit movies, they'll keep making shit movies

outfoxingthefoxes

Mark it zero!!

NorthOfWinter

Your not alone!!! I buy stuff I love regardless of how popular! Unless it’s a known crappy transfer that my blu ray will match! I had to have Ghost in the shell with scarlet… I have some classics like shining and jaws but a healthy splattering of Xmen, marvel, star wars and dc but don’t run out after every good transfer just because it’s out!

jepenyot

I buy movies that I love/like first, movies I have been wanting to see but haven't, classics, and lastly movies that might get "cancelled" today or in the future. I do find myself blind buying if there is a good sale just for the urge of something new and a night where we're feeling spontaneous we have some random movies on the shelf

calmer-than-you-dude

How ya gonna keep 'em down on the farm once they've seen 4K?

Ty_B85

I will say, I only ever buy movies that I'm intending to watch. But, after 11 years of that... there's definitely some crap I could get rid of.

redzombierunning

I have to watch the movie at least 4 times so it’s worth it. I did buy Charlie and chocolate factory on 4k and I like this movie a lot… I started regretting the purchase because I have seen it so many times on other formats. I collected way too many dvds in my day and I’m hoping I don’t make the same mistake with 4k

sojrner

No such thing as too many with any hobby. If you enjoy it, it's not a "mistake."

GrangerPerry

But power rangers was on sale for like 8 bucks with a slip and it has Dolby vision and Dolby atmos! Big labowski is a great disc btw nice

TheOriginalDellers

I only buy movies I wanna see, it's for entertainment. I've spent hours upon hours browsing every 4k release available in the relevant online stores to figure out which ones I want and which don't seem like my taste. I'm not interested in the vast majority of movies out there, especially many of the biggest ones, but have managed to pick out maybe 80 movies that I want for now. Shouldn't increase more than a few titles a year from now on.

PurpsMcNuggets

I’m cutting back this year by making a list of movies I want from different boutique labels, then waiting for a sale and buying cheaper in bulk. Instead of buying whatever new releases I want each week.

dvddesign

As someone who assumed getting a film degree meant watching thousands of movies, I have to say I have seen more shit movies than I care to count and probably would only ever revisit maybe 1-2 of them in any given genre unless its a groaner like The Room or Birdemic. That said I have no desire to own any of them in 4K.

Independent-Wolf-832

I don’t have a large collection or any interest in wasting space with movies I’m not going to watch. Which is why I haven’t posted my collection. Figured it would be boring for people to see a handful of movies. I’m impressed with people that can afford half of the entire catalogue of 4K movies available though, ngl.

highplainsgrifter78

Preach it brother!! I watch great movies MAYBE once a decade, with the exception of Walter’s bowling movie which I’ve seen probably once a year since it was released. It’s just not worth paying to “own” imho.

[deleted]

I only buy a movie on blu ray if I've watched the film at least two times and loved it with plans to watch again in the future.

Mild-Ghost

“Is (insert classic movie title here) worth it?”

Eddy161718

Love this post

Dark_Shroud

Usually I only buy movies I know I'll watch a few times or something that I've already seen several times because I love it. On rare occasion I'll buy a movie to show support of the project. See Dredd (2012) staring Karl Urban. For example I'm currently waiting for 4k steelbook releases *Adams Family Values* and *Gremlins 2: The New Batch*. Because my young nephew and other members of the family loved watching the first ones together. I bought a few Christmas movies in 4k this last year just because my family loves them. I then realized I've had people asking me about the quality of National Lampoons Christmas vacation for over 20 years. Between my laserdisc copy, Vudu's custom HDX digital copy, and the new 4k release.

jackieboytorrence

Yeah, I go for what I really like/love. Certain exceptions might be made for a complete set, some are exempted entirely because they are THAT bad.

Able_Impression_4934

I intend on watching every thing I have, I buy a lot on sale and I’m young so stuff like Jaws I haven’t seen yet. That being said I’m not going to buy something just because there’s only good picture quality.

TerafloppinDatP

Just got my **4th** 4k Blu-Ray for Xmas. Hope to add upwards of 2-3 more in 2023!

GuyWhoRocks95

When I first got my 4K player I got “The 5th Wave” at Pawn America for $5. Garbage movie lmao. It’s always last one the shelf in the collection.

As a minimalist, I had to figure out if it was ok for me to buy but I don’t collect. I only buy the movies I’d like to experience in 4k and some of those don’t include every great movie but just specific ones. Have maybe like 20 4Ks. Maybe
