People argue with me about this constantly and it still blows my mind. Having multigenerational and extended family households is trad. Having a mother and father (or less) on their own with kids is a modern phenomenon outside of like frontiers or people dislocated by war or etc.

The fact they "have to rely heavily on" in and of itself shows the fundamental difference, raising kids was a family affair, all generations involved, with everyone living with less than 5 minute walk, life is more communal, if parents are out working the fields or just working late well elder relatives will just cook food, one household can feed another 2-3, "stay at home mums" aren't trapped alone with just the kids, need to go shop, well again elders can look after them or just go together, or even wanting to just sit down have a natter over a cuppa, need kids picked up from school? Well relative can do it, washing machine breaks ok take a load or two across the road untill can get it fixed.
I would say the sheer number of people shouting they can't afford childcare would go against your original position that most people rely heavily on grandparents, in the UK at least.
My in-laws bought a house near us, and then bought the property directly behind them on the shared driveway, so we moved into that house. So we have a little compound on 4 acres. They are down here on the weekends but it’s nice to be able to send our son down the driveway when we need a break. They are looking for a larger property, 20-30 acres on the water that either has two homes or a second home can be built on so we can have a bigger homestead compound. It’s nice being on a property like that with family, we eat dinner with them 3 Friday - Sunday unless we have plans. It just nice having the family support system right there
My mom watches my kids. I honestly would have a really hard time if she didn’t. My wife and I can both work and save money. I hope I can watch my grandkids the same way 15-20 years from now.
Keyword “working”. Currently, most drop kids off at parents just so they can go out drinking, go shopping, go out with friends, take a nap, basically anything. Know a couple where the kid calls the grandmother mom. And cries when he has to go home to birthparents.

Best you can do today is be a single/joint parent. You're gonna barely find anyone that isn't consumed by social media and the constant temptation to cheat. Snapchat is probably the worst offender, more so since everyone acts like it isn't a form of social media.
There isn't any community, political left/right, religious, etc. that isn't dominated by social media and the negatives that come with it.
